Experiments have been performed to investigate the key parameters determining the performance of thermoelectric power generation. The experimental results obtained show that the power output significantly increases with the temperature difference between cold and hot sides of thermoelectric generator. However, the effect of the hot side temperature under the identical temperature difference on the overall performance of a thermoelectric generator is meager. The conversion efficiency defined as the ratio of the power generated to the heat absorbed at the hot side increases with the temperature difference. The behavior of the thermoelectric generator is shown to be consistent with the theoretical analysis. The optimum current giving the maximum conversion efficiency and the maximum conversion efficiency are linearly increased with the temperature difference.
In this paper, a method to obtain the probability distribution of room temperature and cooling load is presented, when the internal heat generation is applied to the system as a disturbance in the air conditioning system with slab cooling storage. The probability distribution of room temperature and the cooling load due to the disturbance were examined in one room of an office building. When considering only the electric power consumption as a probability component, it was found that the effect on room temperature and cooling load is small, because the probability component of the measured electric power consumption in the building is small. On the other hand, when considering the stochastic fluctuations of electric power consumption together with the heat generated by human bodies, the mean value of the cooling load was about 2,300 W and the ratio of the standard deviations was 19% (10 o'clock in second day). It was revealed that the stochastic effects of internal heat generation acting on the air conditioning system with slab cooling storage are not small.
Adjacent housing units suffer inevitable thermal losses if an unheated unit exists in an apartment building. Thermal loss of the units adjoining the unheated apartment can be neglected because the contact area is small and insulators are located in the walls. When insulators are not included in the slab between the upper and lower units, 70% of the heat supplied by an Ondol system may be used in the original unit, but 30% is transferred to the unit on the lower floor. Another 30% can be obtained from the ceiling if the upper floor housing unit is heated. This strong thermal connection is a characteristic of Ondol heating in apartment buildings. When there is an unheated unit, the lower floor unit uses 42.3% more heating energy if there is no insulation and 19.5% if a 35 mm insulator is used as in the current guidelines. Therefore, much thicker insulation should be applied to weaken the thermal connection.
In recent years, heat source systems which have a principal effect on the performance of buildings are difficult to design optimally as a great number of design factors and constraints in large and complicated buildings need to be considered. On the other hand, it is necessary to design an optimum system combination and operation planning for energy efficiency considering Life Cycle Cost (LCC). This study suggests a multi-level and multi-objective optimization method to minimize both LCC and investment cost using a genetic algorithm targeting an office building which requires a large cooling load. The optimum method uses a two stage process to derive the system combination and the operation schedule by utilizing the input data of cooling and heating load profile and system performance characteristics calculated by dynamic energy simulation. The results were assessed by Pareto analysis and a number of Pareto optimal solutions were determined. Moreover, it was confirmed that the derived operation schedule was useful for operating the heat source systems efficiently against the building energy requirements. Consequently, the proposed optimization method is determined by a valid way if the design process is difficult to optimize.
As a turbulence-enhancing device, a mixing vane installed at a spacer grid of the fuel assembly plays a role in improving the convective heat transfer by generating either swirl flow in the subchannels or cross flow between fuel rod gaps. Therefore, both configuration and arrangement pattern of a mixing vane are important factors that determine the performance of a mixing vane. In this study, in order to examine the flow distribution features inside $5{\times}5$ fuel assembly with swirl-type mixing vanes used in benchmark calculation of OECD/NEA, simulations were conducted with commercial CFD software ANSYS CFX R.14. Predicted results were compared to data measured from MATiS-H (Measurement and Analysis of Turbulent Mixing in Subchannels-Horizontal) test facility. In addition, the effect of swirl-type mixing vanes on flow pattern inside the fuel assembly was described.
Much energy is used in occupying stage of the Building Life Cycle. Electric charge is one of the various factors that influence on energy use of residents. This study focused on electric charge and searched that whether electric charge affects residents' behavior of operating air conditioner and their controlled indoor climate. We surveyed three groups for field study ; A group is residents who live in a studio apartment, B group is residents who live in a university dormitory and C group is residents who live in a apartment with their family. The A and C groups are charged for electric as energy consumption they used. And the B group is students who live in a university dormitory and they are not charged for their energy consumption. We measured the time to use the air conditioner for cooling, on/off temperature of air conditioner, and room air temperature for these three groups. The result shows that consideration for electric charge affects to the residents' behavior of operating air conditioner and their acceptable thermal range.
In this paper, flow characteristics of an adiabatic capillary tube in a transcritical $CO_2$ have been investigated employing the homogeneous model. The model is based on fundamental equations of mass, energy and momentum which are solved simultaneously. Two friction factors(Churchill) and viscosity(McAdams) are comparatively used to investigate the flow characteristics. Supercritical and subcritical thermodynamic and transport properties of $CO_2$ are calculated employing EES property code. Flow characteristics analysis of $CO_2$ adiabatic capillary tube is presented to offer the basic design data for the operating parameters. The operating parameters considered in this study include inlet temperature and pressure of an adiabatic capillary tube, evaporating temperature and inner diameter tube. The main results were summarized as follows : inlet temperature and pressure of an adiabatic capillary tube, evaporating temperature, mass flowrate and inner diameter of $CO_2$ adiabatic capillary tube have an effect on length of an adiabatic capillary tube.
The effect of tube diameter on heat transfer characteristics of absorber in absorption chiller/heater using LiBr solution as a working fluid has been investigated by experimental study to develop a high performance and compact absorber. A system Includes a tube absorber, a generator, solution distribution system and cooling water system was set up. The diameter of the heat exchanger tube inside absorber was changed from 15.88mm to 12.7mm and 9.52mm. The experimental results show that the heat transfer coefficient, Nusselt number and heat flux increase as solution flow rate and cooling water flow rate increase. The heat transfer performance increases as tube diameter decreases. Among three different tube diameters, the smallest tube diameter 9.52mm has highest heat transfer performance. A comparison of the heat transfer coefficient obtained by the present study with those of previous experimental results showed good overall agreement.
