  • This paper studies the improvement of a pre-processing line for waste refrigerators in a metropolitan recycling center(MRC). We performed ARENA modeling and simulation by using work analysis and time measurement on the current processing line. Combined this result with some practical experiences from workers, we generated 3 alternatives to improve the current line and evaluated them by using ARENA simulation. The final decision selected consists of changing 2-line process into 1-line and having a separate cell-line for collecting refrigerant. Currently, the result of this study was applied to MRC by improving cycle time, throughput, and space utilization compared to the previous one.

  • The performance of a refrigerant mixture of propane(R290)/isobutane(R600a) as a substitute for CFC12 was investigated in a domestic refrigerator with single evaporator. A thermodynamic cycle simulation indicated an increase in COP of a 1.7 to 2.4% with R-290/600a in the composition range of 0.2 to 0.6 mass fraction of R290 compared to CFC12. For the tests, two units($299{\ell}$, $465{\ell}$) were used. All refrigeration components remained the same throughout the tests, except that the length of capillary tube and amount of charge were changed for the mixture. The refrigerators were fully instrumented with more than 20 thermocouples, 2 pressure transducers, and watt/watt-hour meter for each refrigerator. 'Energy consumption test' and 'no load pulldown test' were performed under the same condition. The experimental results obtained with the same compressor indicated that R-290/600a mixture at 0.6 mass fraction of R290 showed a 3 to 5% increase in energy efficiency and a faster cooling speed compared to CFC12. The R-290/600a mixture showed a shorter compressor on-time and a lower compressor dome temperature than CFC12. In conclusion, the proposed hydrocarbon mixture seems to be an appropriate candidate to replace CFC12 without causing more environmental problems.

  • Innovative technical process for Energy Storage System (ESS), Liquid Air Energy Storage system (LAES) is mature technologies based on the gas liquefaction process. In spite of many advantages such as high energy density, no geographical constraints, low investment costs and long useful life, the system has not yet widely commercialized due to low round trip efficiency. To improve RTE and acquire high yield of liquid air, various configurations of LAES process have been considered. In this research, dual refrigerants cycle (R-600a and methanol) for air liquefaction and thermal oil circulation for power generation via liquid air gasification have been applied to improve cycle performance significantly using Aspen HYSYS simulator.

  • A super-heat pump system composed of a suction line heat exchanger, low and high stage economizers, and a screw compressor is simulated to examine the energy performance and design options. CFC12, HCFC22, HFC134a, HCFC22/HCFC142b, HFC32/HFC134a, and HFC125/HFC134a are used as working fluids for comparison. The results indicate that the proposed system charged with appropriate mixtures is up to 33.4% more energy efficient than the normal system with CFC12. The performance of the super-heat pump system charged with mixtures was influenced by such factors as the temperature matching, heat source temperature difference, low stage economizer, and high stage economizer. The fluids with a larger liquid specific heat such as HFC134a would have more benefits when a suction line heat exchanger is installed. 40%HCFC22/60%HCFC142b mixture seems to be a good candidate to replace CFC12. On the other hand, 25%HFC32/75% HFC134a would be a good long term candidate to replace HCFC22.

  • In this study, simulation and optimization works for a demethanizer column have been performed to obtain ethane and heavier products from a pretreated natural gas stream. Pretreated natural gas feed stream was partially condensed after being precooled by exchanging heat with demethanizer top vapor stream and by using an external refrigeration cycle with a propane refrigerant. Vapor stream was cooled further and partially condensed through a turbo-expander. The power generated from the expansion of turbo-expander was delivered to the compressor for the residue gas compression. Liquid stream was cooled by Joule-Thomson expansion valve and was fed to the middle section of the demethanizer. Recovery percent of ethane for feed natural was set to 80% and methane to ethane molar ratio was fixed as 0.0119. On the other hand, some of the cold heat could be recovered by splitting the feed stream and by exchanging heat with side reboiler in order to reduce the heat duty in the propane refrigeration cycle.

  • R1234yf has been developed as an alternative refrigerant to R134a, which has been associated with global warming. The capillary tubes as expansion valves control the mass flow rate and balance system pressure in the refrigeration cycle. The present numerical model used the governing equations including the law of conservation of mass, momentum, and energy in a capillary tube. The mass flow rate of R1234yf decreased by 47.0% as the capillary tube length was increased from 1 to 4 m. As the inner diameter of the capillary tubes was changed from 1.3 to 1.7 mm, the mass flow rate of R134a and R1234yf increased by 117.9% and 121.0%, respectively. The mass flow rate of the R134a and R1234yf increased by 28.3% and 29.1% with subcooling increasing from 0 to $7^{\circ}C$. In addition, when the inlet temperature of the capillary tubes was changed from 35 to $60^{\circ}C$, the mass flow rate of R134a and R1234yf increased by 31.0% and 45.4%, respectively.

  • Liquid hydrogen has the best storage capacity per unit mass and is economical among storage methods for using hydrogen as fuel. As the demand for hydrogen increases, the need to develop a storage and supply system of liquid hydrogen is emphasizing. In order to liquefy hydrogen, it is necessary to pre-cool it to a maximum inversion temperature of -253℃. The Gifford-McMahon (GM) refrigerator is the most reliable and commercialized refrigerator among small-capacity cryogenic refrigerators, which can extract high-efficiency hydrogen through liquefied hydrogen production and boil of gas re-liquefaction. Therefore, in this study, the optimal conditions for liquefying gas hydrogen were sought using the GM cryocooler. The process was simulated by PRO/II under various cooling capacities of the GM refrigerator. In addition, the flow rate of hydrogen was calculated by comparing with specific refrigerator capacity depending on the pressure and flow rate of a refrigerant medium, helium. Simulations were performed to investigate the optimal values of the liquefaction flow rate and compression pressure, which aim for the peak refrigeration effect. Based on this, a liquefaction system can be selected in consideration of the cycle configuration and the performance of the refrigerator.
