  • Antioxidation characteristics of carbon at high temperature with the co-addition of Al and Si powder in Al2O3-C system refractory were analyzed. The use of surface-modified phosphate carbon as a starting material was found to be very effective in improving the mixing effect of raw materials and antioxidation behavior of carbon. In particular, this effect was dominant at higher temperatures than 130$0^{\circ}C$.

  • In order to develop effective recycling technologies of disused railway wood ties, wood properties and residual creosote oil of wood ties were investigated. Among the total 50 wood ties, 32 wood ties were identified as tropical hardwood tree, such as, Keruing (Dipterocarpus spp.), Kempas (Koompassia malaccensis), Kapur (Dryobalanops spp.) Naytoh (Palaquium rostratum), and so on. Disused wood ties showed mostly sound structure without degradation of cell walls by decay fungi. Disused wood ties showed high strengths of bending and compressive parallel to grain because degradation of wood properties was hardly occurred in use under exterior condition. Disused railway wood ties had relatively poor depth of penetration and residual of creosote oil because of refractory wood structures. These results suggest that disused railway wood ties may be useful as recycling wood wastes.

  • Ileus caused by impaction of hardened residual barium stagnated in the colon, a rare complication of barium-enema examination, constitutes a particularly serious problem when it occurs in congenital megacolon patients. The administration of gastrografin in such case has proven efficacy in dissolution of impacted barium refratory to routine means of evacuation. We experienced a case of barium-impaction occurred in 6-months old male who had congenital megacolon. Gastrografin enema was a safe and simple method used in the management of this case.

  • Chronic osteomyelitis is often considered difficult to treat and may lead to refratory condition in oral and maxillofacial region. Clinical features of chronic osteomyelitis includes pain, swelling, pus discharge, and radiographic change. There are many kinds of treatment of chronic osteomyelitis. One of the most important factors in treating osteomyelitis are removal of infectious foci and administration of massive antibiotics. Recently we reviewed 29 patients with chronic osteomyelitis who visited in our department and treated successfully with our treatment protocols, consisting of surgical intervention and intravenous antibiotics for 2 weeks, and followed by oral antibiotics for 6 weeks. It is concluded that combination of surgical intervention and antibiotic therapy are sufficient to treat the chronic osteomyelitis in oral and maxillofacial region.
