  • It is very difficult to make complex 3 dimensional curved-shape composite laminates using the advanced unidirectional composite prepregs. This study shows development process of subscale composite parabolic antenna reflector using unidirectional AS4/PEEK prepreg tapes. The AS4/PEEK thermoplastic composite materials are known to have good thermal and chemical stabilities in addition to their high specific strength and modulus. Various lamination methods were investigated through finite element analyses to make up the laminate design of the reflector. The automated fiber placement method was used to fabricate the reflector. The thermal expansion test using full-bridge strain gage circuits was done to verity the performance of the composite product.

  • This paper presents the study on multi-beam large aperture antenna systems for a satellite payload. Multi-beam large antenna provides the universal communication and broadcasting services to personal portable terminals. The hybrid antenna composed of a large reflector and a feed array forms multi-beams. The feed cluster consists of a group of feed elements and each element should be optimized for the appropriate amplitude and phase. The optimization progress for amplitude and phase was performed by GO (Geometrical Optics) and PO (Physical Optics) method. The number of feed elements as well as the power level per element were also optimized to meet the required EIRP (Effective Isotropically Radiated Power). In conclusion, 30m-class reflector and twenty five elements for fifteen beams over Korean Peninsula were designed through the optimization process.

  • Generally, a deployable solar panel is used primarily to achieve sufficient power output to perform the mission. However, temperature distribution on the antenna reflector may increase due to the shading effect induced by the presence of the deployable solar panels. Appropriate thermal design is critical to minimize the thermal deformation of the mesh antenna reflector in harsh on-orbit thermal environments to ensure remote frequency (RF) performance. In this paper, we proposed a dual-surface primary reflector consisting of a mesh antenna and a flexible fabric membrane sheet. This design strategy can contribute to thermal stabilization by using a flexible solar panel on the rear side of membrane sheet to reduce the temperature distribution caused by the deployable solar panel. The effectiveness of the mesh antenna design strategy investigates through on-orbit thermal analysis.

  • Recently, as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), communication, and signal surveillance missions of spacecraft have become more advanced, research has been actively conducted on the deployable large mesh antenna system with excellent storage efficiency compared to the deployment area, and light weight. Deployable Mesh antennae are characterized by an increase in the number of Openings Per Inch (OPI), which is a measure of mesh weaving density as the mission frequency band increases, and this OPI change directly affects the thermal optical properties of the mesh antenna, so research on this is required. In this paper, to verify the thermal relationship between the optical properties of the mesh and antenna reflector, thermal sensitivity analysis between the mesh and the antenna reflector is performed by in-orbit thermal analysis with various optical characteristics of the mesh based on existing overseas research cases. In addition, the temperature gradient effect of the mesh reflector is analyzed.

  • Herein, an ultrawideband spinning direction finding (DF) antenna was designed and fabricated for airborne applications. The proposed antenna is designed by dividing the low-band (UHF - L band) and high-band (S - Ka band) antennas to cover the ultrawideband frequency range (UHF - Ka band). For the high-band antenna, an LPDA antenna fed offset-parabolic-reflector antenna is applied. In the low-band antenna, two LPDA antenna elements are arrayed in front of the reflector of the high-band antenna without increasing to the full antenna size. The low- and high-band gains of the fabricated antenna were measured as 8.76 dBi and 24.55 dBi on average, respectively. The antenna was fabricated with the dimensions of 437 mm in diameter and 358 mm in height. Consequently, we confirmed that the designed antenna is appropriate for the spinning DF antenna in terms of the affordable size for installing on an airplane, as well as the high gain and narrow beamwidth.

  • This paper explains about the design, fabrication, and measurement of directional dipole antenna for MMDS. The proposed dipole antenna is an electric wave guide with a director at $\lambda/4$ distance and is also designed to have directivity. The high gain antenna is realized by using a reflector at $45^{\circ}degree$. The fabricated antenna shows the return loss of -35dB at the center frequency 2.06GHz and also has the bandwidth of about 310MHz (>15%) under the condition of VSWR<2. The gain of dipole antennas is 11.5dBi.

  • In this paper, the reduction of the figure of merit depending on the increased spill-over when the parabolic reflector is cut off partially for low-profile configuration in the satellite broadcast receiving antenna is analyzed. Also for the accurate analysis and simulation, it is considered that the noise temperature is increased due to the effect of ground thermal noise toword the sidelobes and back lobes when the antenna is tracked from $0^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$ in elevation angle, and that the total noise temperature is increased because to the noise figure of LNA. As the results, noise temperature is increased up to about 15K and G/T ratio is decreased to about 2.5dB, when the reflector is cut 35% off partially.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the radiation characteristics of the shaped Cassegrainian antenna. Radiation pattern of the sub-reflector is calculated by GTD (Geometrical Theory of Diffraction) The complete radiation patterns are obtained by summing the reflect field from the surface and the diffracted fields from the edge. The first and the second derivative on the sub-reflector are calculated by the local interpolation technique. The Radiation characteristics of the main-reflector are obtained by integrating the surface current density, which is derived from PO approximation. The radiation integral is expanded by the Jacobi-Bessel series for the purpose of reducing the computation time.

  • A WLAN dual band dipole antenna with parasitic elements and a reflector is presented for high gain operation. The parasitic elements are used for practical application and high gain operation of the radiation pattern at the WLAN dual band. The proposed antenna consists of three layers, and has dimensions of $74mm{\times}40 mm{\times}31.4mm$. From the experimental results, the achieved impedance bandwidths were 1035 MHz (2.031-3.066 GHz) and 1119 MHz (5.008-6.127 GHz), respectively. The measured maximum gain at each WLAN band was 6.69 dBi and 7.81 dBi, respectively.
