Effect of Density on Water Content Reflectometer Measured Field Water Content in Pavement Subgrades (Water Content Reflectometer로 측정한 현장 노상토의 함수량에 대한 다짐도 영향 평가)

  • The purpose of field monitoring system in KHC-Test Road is to provide the performance data for environmental loadings from pavement surface. Among them, water content reflectometer(WCR) are used for measuring the volumetric water content of pavement subgrades. However, WCRs are not well-calibrated based on the local field conditions. A need therefore exists for improving equations for predicting water content using the proper field and laboratory calibrations. Based on the study performed, calibrations based on various soil characteristics and density conditions are well fitted to the data from fields. So, it is recommended to use the suggested general calibration of WCR to the compacted subgrade soils in test road for predicting the volumetric water content.

Calibration of frequency propagation channel sounder based on five-port reflectometer

  • Five-port reflectometer which consists of a ring with 5 arms (two inputs, three outputs) and three RF power detectors has been used as a vector network analyser, a demodulator in the homodyne receiver as well as in Phase Looked Loop (PLL) and so on. Calibration of five-port reflectometer is an important task. In this paper, we present a calibration method of five-port for a propagation channel sounder. The method is based on measurement of the phase differences between the three voltages at the five-port's outputs in order to determine the ratio of two input incident waves. The frequency channel sounder based on five-port is calibrated for each frequency from 2.2 GHz to 2.6 GHz with 1 MHz step. This method can also determine the absolute delays of each propagation path in the propagation channel. The calibration method is validated using measurement data.

  • We proposed a new algorithm to improve the calculation speed of forward ray tracing method which was quite a problem in conventional Monte Carlo algorithm. To verify the accuracy and the effect of improving calculation speed, we directly compared integrating sphere characteristics with conventional ray tracing algorithm under the same condition which was referred in a reference paper. By applying new algorithm to an absolute reflectometer, we calculated the degree of errors which were caused by baffle and port characteristics to find optimal system design condition.

The Test Strip Reflectometer Method as a Quick Test Procedure for Soil Nitrate Nitrogen (토양의 질산태 질소 간이검정)

  • To find a quick test procedure for soil nitrate concentration, two methods, i.e. "Nitracheck 404" reflectometer (Eijkelkamp, Netherlands) with nitrate test strip and a portable colorimeter "Hanna Ion Specific meter(USA) with a color development reagent, were tested for twenty soils with different nitrate contents ranged between from $10mg\;kg^{-1}$ to $340mg\;kg^{-1}$. The standard deviation, coefficient of variability, and recovery from these quick test procedures were compared with those measured by conventional Kjeldahl distillation method and nitrate ion electrode method. The nitrate concentration measured by portable colorimeter method was higher in soils with low concentration and lower in soils with high concentration than those measured by conventional methods. However, concentrations measured by test strip reflectometer method was showed the similar coefficient of variability and recovery as those by conventional methods for all soil samples. From the experimental results in this study, the test strip reflectometer method was thought to be recommendable one revealed the satisfied results for accuracy, quickness, and simplicity for field test of soil nitrate concentration.

  • 다공질매체에서의 포화-비포화 흐름 거동을 파악하기 위하여는 시간에 따른 함수량의 변화과정을 정확하고 빠르게 측정하여야 한다. 본 연구는 실험실에서 함수량을 측정하는 방법의 하나로서 TDR(Time Domain Reflectometer)을 사용하는 실험 방법에 관한 연구이다. TDR 이란 전기신호의 전도특성 이용하여 토양내 설치된 탐침(probe)의 전기신호 반향시간을 측정하는 기기로서 이 반향시간과 토양의 유전율상수(dielectric constant)의 관계를 이용하여 함수량을 추정할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 TDR의 원리설명과 이를 이용한 함수량측정방법을 제시하고 있다.

Analysis of Horizontal Neutron Reflectometer for Nanointerfaces Using McStas (나노 계면분석을 위한 수평형 중성자 반사율 측정장치의 McStas 시뮬레이션 분석)

  • A new horizontal neutron reflectometer has been designed and now under construction at the HANARO, 30 MW research reactor, in Daejon, Korea. We performed simulations of neutron ray-tracing to evaluate the performance of all of the optical components of the instrument with a Monte Carlo technique using McStas. The feasible wavelength of the incident neutron beam is $2.5{\AA}$. It produces a q-range up to $0.126{\AA}^{-1}$ with a supermirror as a deflector. Our studies showed improvement of the performance of the guide tube and monochromators. Although the performance is limited in q-range, it promises to be the first reflectometer in Korea for the study of free surfaces, which is currently in demand.

Fabrication of reflectometer for vacuum ultraviolet spectral characteristic measurements of optical component (광학부품의 진공자외선특성 측정용 분광반사율계 제작)

  • We fabricated a vacuum ultraviolet spectre-reflectometer which consists of a deuterium light source, a vacuum monochromator, and a sample chamber and detector module. The operation was performed in the ultraviolet spectral ranges between 115 nm and 330 nm at the vacuum pressure of 3.0 ${\times}$ 10$^{-4}$ Pa. The wavelength of the vacuum monochromator was calibrated with the line spectrum of a low pressure Mercury lamp of 253.652 nm and 184.95 nm wavelengths, and its resolution was 0.012 nm, and the precision of wavelength was $\pm$ 0.03 nm. With this reflectometer and a deuterium lamp, we measured the spectral regular transmittance and reflectance of materials(MgF$_2$, CaF$_2$, BaF$_2$, SiO$_2$, Sapphire) used as optical components over the spectral range between 115 nm and 230 nm.

A Study on the Measurement of Volumetric Water Content Using WCR in Final Cover Layer of Landfill (Water Content Reflectometer(WCR)을 이용한 매립지반 최종 복토층의 체적 함수비 측정에 관한 연구)

  • This study deals with the calibration of low-frequency water content reflectometer for measuring the volumetric water content of soils in landfill final cover layer, and the validity of calibrations was evaluated by electrical conductivity and index properties of the soils. Linear calibrations concerning volumetric water content to WCR period provided good agreement with the data. Analysis of the calibration data indicates that the slope of the calibration decreases as the electrical conductivity of the soil increases. Lower slopes correspond to soils with greater clay content, organic content, liquid limit, and plasticity index, which typically have higher electrical conductivity. It could be well explained that WCR can operate in a lower frequency range.

  • The horizontal reflectometer, which uses a neutron beam in the reactor, provides scientists a set of unique tools offering destruction-free investigation of biological membranes in the native-like environments in nano-meter scale. As an intial stage for the development of the first Korean neutron reflectometer with a horizontal sample geometry, we performed the instrumental simulation using MCSTAS, Monte Carlo Simulations of Triple Axis Spectrometers for neutron ray-tracing simulation. The results indicated that modeling of the overall instrument geometry based on the thermal neutron source with a wavelength of 2.55 $2.5{\AA}$ at HANARO was successfully performed, and further the optimization of the individual components of the instrument, including the collimator, monochromators, filter and supermirror has been made.
