In this paper, reflectance and the dielectric characteristics for $P_2O_5-ZnO-BaO$ system and $SiO_2-ZnO-B_2O_3$ system have been investigated as a function of contents of $TiO_2$. The reflectance was decreased with increasing the contents of $TiO_2$ and the reflectance of $P_2O_5-ZnO-BaO$ system was lowered than that of $SiO_2-ZnO-B_2O_3$ system. The dielectric constant of $P_2O_5-ZnO-BaO$ system was higher than $SiO_2-ZnO-B_2O_3$ system, and the dielectric constant in the both system was increased with increasing of $TiO_2$ contents. This can be explained as the space charge effects. These results are could be applied to the under plate dielectrics of PDP required high reflective ratio and breakdown strength.
The rapid technology developments in smartphones have created a significant opportunity for their use in structural live load measurements. This paper presents extensive experiments conducted in two stages to investigate this opportunity. Shaking table tests were carried out in the first stage using selected popular smartphones to measure the sinusoidal waves of various frequencies, the sinusoidal sweeping, and earthquake waves. Comparison between smartphone measurements and real inputs showed that the smartphones used in this study gave reliable measurements for harmonic waves in both time and frequency domains. For complex waves, smartphone measurements should be used with caution. In the second stage, three-dimensional motion capture technology was employed to explore the capacity of smartphones for measuring the movement of individuals in walking, bouncing and jumping activities. In these tests, reflective markers were attached to the test subject. The markers' trajectories were recorded by the motion capture system and were taken as references. The smartphone measurements agreed well with the references when the phone was properly fixed. Encouraged by these experimental validation results, smartphones were attached to moving participants of this study. The phones measured the acceleration near the center-of-mass of his or her body. The human-induced loads were then reconstructed by the acceleration measurements in conjunction with a biomechanical model. Satisfactory agreement between the reconstructed forces and that measured by a force plate was observed in several instances, clearly demonstrating the capability of smartphones to accurately assist in obtaining human-induced load measurements.
Luminescent solar concentrator (LSC), consisting of luminophore included glass or substrate with edge-mounted photovoltaic cell, is semi-transparent, energy harvesting devices. The luminophore absorbs incident solar light and re-emit photons, while the waveguide plate allows re-emitted photons to reach edge or bottom mounted photovoltaic cells with reduced losses. If the area of LSC is much larger than that of photovoltaic cell, this system can effectively concentrate solar light. In order to improve the performance of LSC, new materials and optical structures have been suggested by many research groups. For decreasing re-abosprion losses, it is essential to minimize the overlap between absorption and photoluminescence solar spectrum of luminophoroe. Moreover, the combination of selective top reflector and reflective optical cavity structure significantly boosts the waveguide efficiency in the LSC. As a result of many efforts, commercially available LSCs have been demonstrated and verified in the outdoor. Also, it is expected to generate electricity in buildings by replacing conventional glass to LSCs.
Heliostat field is the most important subsystem in the tower type solar thermal power plant since its optical performance affects the total system efficiency most significantly while the construction cost of it is the major part of total construction cost in such a power plant. Thus a well designed heliostat field to maximize the optical efficiency as well as to minimize the land usage is very important. This work presents methodology, procedures and result of heliostat filed design for 200kW solar thermal power plant built recently in Daegu, Korea. A $2{\times}2(m)$ rectangular shaped receiver located at 43(m) high and tilted $28^{\circ}$ toward heliostat field, 450 of heliostats of which the reflective surface is formed by 4 of $1{\times}1(m)$ flat plate mirror facet, and the land area having about $140{\times}120(m)$ size are used to form the heliostat field. A procedure to deploy 450 heliostats in radial staggered nonblocking formation is developed. Also the procedures to compute the cosine effect, intercept ratio, blocking and shading ratio in the field are developed. Finally the heliostat filed is designed by finding the optimal radial distance and azimuthal spacing in radial staggered nonblocking formation such that the designed heliostat field optical efficiency could be maximized. The designed heliostat field has 77% of annual average optical efficiency, which is obtained by annually averaging the optical efficiencies computed between the time of where sun elevation angle becomes $10^{\circ}$ after sunrise and the time of where sun elevation angle becomes $10^{\circ}$ before sunset in each day.
Fuel cells are known as eco - friendly energy facilities that can use heat energy and electric energy at the same time. Fuel cells are classified according to the temperature and material used, and solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is relatively high temperature ($700-800^{\circ}C$). SOFC requires a hot box consisting of a high temperature stack, a reformer, a burner, and the heat exchangers in order to use energy efficiently. The hot box needs to maintain heat insulation performance at high temperature to reduce heat loss. However, Fibrous insulation, which is widely used, needs to be improved because it has a disadvantage that the thermal conductivity is rapidly increased due to the increase of temperature. Therefore, this study was carried out to develop a thermal insulation, which is applied to multiple layers insulation (MLI) technic, that can be used under SOFC operating conditions and prevent a drastic drop in thermal conductivity at high temperature. The developed insulation is consist of a thermally conductive material, a spacer, and a reflective plate. The thermal conductivity of the insulation was measured by in the thermal conductivity measuring device at high temperature range. As a result, it was confirmed that the developed layers insulation have an good thermal conductivity (0.116 W/mK) than fibrous insulation (0.24 W/mK) as a radiation shielding effect at a high temperature of 1,173 K.

The objective of this study is to observe and optimize a typical ocean environment and reduce wave reflections in the wave flume. In order to generate ocean waves in the wave flume, a combination of a horizontal piston type wave generator and wave absorbers was installed in the channel. Two probes for measuring the wave heights, i.e., wave level gauges, were used to record the continuous variation of the wave surface, the phase difference, and the maximum (crest) and minimum (trough) points of the propagating waves. In order to optimize the shape and size of the propagating waves, several absorption methods were proposed. Apart from an active wave absorption method, we used methods that involved vertical porous plates, horizontal punching plates, and sloping-wall-type wave absorbers. To obtain the best propagating waves, a sloping-wall-type wave absorber was chosen and tested in terms of the constitutive filling materials and the location and shape of the plate. This study also focused on the theoretical prediction of the wave surface, separating them into the incident and reflective components. From the results, it is evident that the wave absorber comprising a hard filling material exhibits a better performance than the absorber comprising a soft material, i.e., the wave absorber can be a strong sink to control the energy of the incoming wave. In addition, larger wave absorbers correspond to lower reflectance because a larger volume can reduce the incoming wave energy. Therefore, at constant absorber conditions, the reflectance of the wave increases as the wave period increases. Finally, the reflectance of the wave was controlled to be less than 0.1 in this study so that the wave flume can be used to simulate an offshore environment.

This study presents how we can evaluate stereo camera systems for the structural deformation monitoring. A stereo camera system, consisting of a set of stereo cameras and reflective markers attached on the structure, is introduced for the measurement and the stereo pattern recognition (SPR) method is utilized for the full-field structural deformation estimation. Performance of this measurement system depends on many parameters including types and specifications of the cameras, locations and orientations of them, and sizes and positions of markers; it is difficult to experimentally identify the effects of each parameter on the measurement performance. In this study, a simulation framework for evaluating performance of the stereo camera systems with various parameters has been developed. The maximum normalized root-mean-square (RMS) error is defined as a representative index of stereo camera system performance. A plate structure is chosen for an introductory example. Its several modal harmonic vibrations are generated and estimated in the simulation framework. Two cases of simulations are conducted to see the effects of camera locations and the resolutions of the cameras. An experimental validation is carried out for a few selected cases from the simulations. Using the simultaneous laser displacement sensor (LDS) measurements as the reference, the measurement errors are obtained and compared with the simulations.
FT-IR and thermography were used to investigate the infrared radiation characteristic of SiO$_2$ film and SiO$_2$/Fe$_2$O$_3$film coated on aluminum. Through FT-TR spectrum, SiO$_2$film showed high infrared absorption in accordance with the stretching vibration of Si-O-Si, and as$ Fe_2$$O_3$was mixed additional absorption band appeared resulting from the stretching vibration of Fe-O at $590cm^{-1}$ and the bond of Si-O-Fe at $900 cm^{-1}$ The two kinds of film measured by the integration method and the reflective method coincided with each other in the wavelength area of infrared absorption and radiation, and corresponded well with Kirchhoff's law as the infrared emissivity is high in wavelength where infrared absorption rate is high. The emissivity of $SiO_2$ film was 0.65 and that of $SiO_2$/Fe$_2$$O_3$film was 0.77, so the addition of$ Fe_2$$O_3$ raised the infrared emissivity by approximately 13%.$ SiO_2$$Fe_2$$O_3$ film is efficient as an infrared radiator at below $100^{\circ}C$. The temperature of heat radiation after 7 minutes was 117$^{\circ}C$ in aluminum plate and $155^{\circ}C$ in $SiO_2$$Fe_2$$O_3$ film, $38^{\circ}C$ higher than the former.
We introduce the Transformable Reflective Telescope (TRT) kit that applies an aluminum profile as a base plate for precise, stable, and lightweight optical system. It has been utilized for optical surface measurements, developing alignment and baffle systems, observing celestial objects, and various educational purposes through Research & Education projects. We upgraded the TRT kit using the aluminum profile and truss and isogrid structures for a high-end optical test device that can be used for prototyping of precision telescopes or satellite optical systems. Thanks to the substantial aluminum profile and lightweight design, mechanical deformation by self-weight is reduced to maximum 67.5 ㎛, which is an acceptable misalignment error compared to its tolerance limits. From the analysis results of non-linear vibration simulations, we have verified that the kit survives in harsh vibration environments. The primary mirror and secondary mirror modules are precisely aligned within 50 ㎛ positioning error using the high accuracy surface finished aluminum profile and optomechanical parts. The cross laser module helps to align the secondary mirror to fine-tune the optical system. The TRT kit with the precision aluminum mirror guarantees high quality optical performance of 5.53 ㎛ Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) at the field center.
