  • We designed a low cost optical structure of transflective LCD that uses only a half number of retardation films compared to general active matrix transflective LCD. The prototype embodied by this design shows reasonable reflective and transmissive performance. This design would provide us thinner, lighter and cheaper product due to its reduced retardation film structure.

  • A development of low power display is an important problem from a point of reduction in worldwide energy consumption. In this research, we aimed to achieve a high quality and low power paper-like reflective full-color display and investigated the design rules for the light diffusing film, LC-cell structure, front lighting systems based on the diffused light control technology. As a result, we successfully obtained the high quality reflective liquid crystal display with a high reflectivity, a wide color gamut and a high motion picture quality.

  • The correlation between the optical performance of the reflective polarizer, which is a key optical component for the brightness enhancement of the liquid crystal display (LCD), and the configuration of optical sheets was investigated in a direct-lit CCFL (cold-cathode fluorescent lamp) backlight. The optical gain of the reflective polarizer, the polarization state of the light emitted from each film, and the loss factor for the polarization conversion process occurring in the lower part of the backlight were determined using a phenomenological approach for the polarization recycling process. The present study suggests that the correlation between the optical performance of the brightness enhancement films and the backlight configuration should be carefully considered in the optimization of the backlight structure.

  • We present high reflective anode for top emission OLED. Anode consists of two layers, which are increasing the ability of hole injection and the reflectivity of emitted light. Thin Cr is deposited on AlNd that has a high thermal resistance and reflectivity. The current-voltage characteristics of Cr(30${{\AA}}$)/AlNd(1000${{\AA}}$) anode are poor but these of Cr(50${{\AA}}$)/AlNd(1000${{\AA}}$) anode are superior to these of Cr(30${{\AA}}$)/AlNd(1000${{\AA}}$) and the work function of cr(50${{\AA}}$)/AlNd(1000${{\AA}}$) is higher that of Cr(30${{\AA}}$)/AlNd(1000${{\AA}}$).

  • Black-white reflective cholesteric liquid crystal display was prepared with two color liquid crystal layers, the combination of yellow color liquid crystal and blue color liquid crystal. The rubbing of cholesteric liquid crystal panel affects the brightness and color spectrum due to increase the planar domain texture. The CIE chromaticity coordinate of white is (0.31, 0.31).

  • A dual-cell-gap transflective liquid crystal display (TR-LCD) with identical response time in the transmissive and reflective regions is demonstrated. In the transmissive region, strong anchoring energy condition is used to decrease the response time, while in the reflective region weak anchoring energy condition is used to increase the response time. The simulated dual-cell-gap TR-LCD has good performances.

  • Reflective polarizers can be used as luminance enhancement films for LCD backlights via the polarization recycling process. The optical performances of a wire grid polarizer (WGP) as a reflective polarizer adopted in edge-lit backlights were investigated by luminance evaluation and a time-domain simulation technique. The results were compared to those of a commercial dielectric multilayer film. The luminance gain factor of WGP was smaller than that of the multilayer film by 18%. This was attributed to a much larger internal loss of WGP due to light absorption by metal wires. The internal losses of both reflective polarizers and the polarization conversion efficiency of the backlight were obtained numerically based on a phenomenological model. The optical performances of WGP were optimized by using a time-domain simulation technique. The luminance gain increased and was found to become comparable to, but slightly less than the case of the dielectric multilayer film with decreasing line width.

  • We have developed new type of LCD Device which enables switching from reflective to tranmissive LCD mode and vice versa according to brightness of the surrounding. Alternation in these modes are possible by adding on circular polarized sheet and retardation film onto the bottom polarizer which allows the control of the back light and the LCD cell gamma voltage depending on the atmosphere. This method has been evaluated and confirmed by running on the LCD module device in which we have optimized retardation value by Poincare polarizer analysis.
