  • This paper has designed a wideband bandpass filter (WBSF : Wide Band Stop Filter) using a stepped impedance resonator (SIR : Stepped Impedance Resonator) with improved performance and improved hairpin coupling structure. The SIR WBSF is small in size and has the advantage of having excellent bandstop characteristics. The designed BSF has a structure in which a quadrangular shaped hairpin of a / 4 length is arranged symmetrically on the upper and lower sides of the input and output transmission lines. The input and output terminals were terminated at 50 ohms for system applications. The center frequency of the SIR WBSF is 6.3 GHz, which is the second harmonic of 3.15 GHz. The designed filter has a 3dB bandwidth of 2.9 GHz and a transmission coefficient ($S_{21}$) of 33.2 dB. The reflection coefficient ($S_{11}$) at the center frequency is 0.106 dB. The application field is used for fixed microwave relay stations, fixed satellite and earth stations, and fixed satellite communications. The overall size is $20mm{\times}10mm$.

  • In this paper, a novel fluid controlled phase tunable line using inkjet printed microfluidic composite right/left-handed(CRLH) transmission line(TL) is proposed. A CRLH-TL prototype has been inkjet-printed on a paper substrate using silver nano particle ink. In addition, a laser-etched microfluidic channel in poly methyl methacrylate(PMMA) has been integrated with the CRLH TL using inkjet-printed SU-8 as a bonding material. The proposed TL provides excellent phase-tuning capability that is dependent on the different fluidic materials used. As the fluid is changed, the proposed TL can have negative-phase, zero-phase, and positive-phase characteristics at 900 MHz and reflection coefficient is maintained to below -10 dB. The performance of the proposed TL is successfully validated using simulation and measurement results.

  • An open-ended coaxial probe method has been considered as one of effective tools for measuring electrical properties of its contacted material without shaping and fitting. The measured reflection coefficient at the probe's end is able to convert into the corresponding complex permittivity by employing the improved version of virtual transmission-line model Presented by our lab already. But the error of complex permittivity converted by equivalent model increases as the operating frequency ascends high. The errors of complex permittivity in the open-ended coaxial probe can be yielded compositively by the imperfect contact or probe, manufacture error of probe and complex permittivity error of reference material etc. Therefore it is necessary to limit the problem to identify the error causes in high frequency. In this paper, the errors which are resulted from the measurement of reflection coefficient are removed by using the FDTD(Finite-Difference Time-Domain) method, the error causes are limited the conversion model problem. And the error study of the improved conversion model is performed from several viewpoints. At first, the local minimum of parameter to be calculated by the iteration method in the conversion model is checked. At second, the modeling of the equivalent model is checked in the frequency range. From this study, we know the valid range of the improved conversion model.

  • The existing numerical methods on the vertical membrane breakwater have employed a linear analysis where the variable membrane tension occurring during membrane motions is assumed to be very negligible compared to the initial tension. In the present study, a quasi-nonlinear analysis is attempted such that the temporary tension of the membrane is substituted by the average tension for a wave period that is sought by an iterative calculation. The results showed that with the increase of the wave period the reflection coefficients appeared larger and the transmission coefficients smaller compared to the results of the linear analysis. The application of the quasi-nonlinear analysis also showed that the performance of the structure is closely dependent on the horizontal deformation of the membrane. In order to suppress the horizontal deformation, it may be required to take the larger initial tension of the membrane or to put additional mooring lines in the middle of the vertical faces of the membrane. But for theses methods to be effective, a largely sized surface float should be installed to secure enough buoyancy to support such downward forces.

  • Explicit expressions for the transmission pseudo-ellipsometric constants and transmittance of a semi-transparent glass substrate coated with thin films are presented to determine the optical constants of a very weakly absorbing thin film coated on a glass substrate. The intensity of the multiply reflected light inside the semi-transparent substrate is superposed incoherently and the light absorption by the substrate is properly treated, so that modeling analysis of thin films coated on a semi-transparent substrate can be performed with increased accuracy. The extinction coefficient derived from transmittance analysis is compared to that from ellipsometric analysis in the weakly absorbing region, and the difference between the two extinction coefficients is discussed in relation to the sensitivities of the transmittance and ellipsometric constants. This transmittance analysis, together with ellipsometric analysis, is applied to a glass substrate coated with a SiN thin film, and it is shown that the thickness and complex refractive index of the SiN thin film can be determined accurately, even though the extinction coefficient is very small.

  • In order to evaluate applicability of cylindrical slit type block breakwater to the field water, which was designed from the previous physical model study, it is analyzed the calmness of harbor area by the numerical model experiment. For a small fishery port in southern coast of Korea a SWAN model using the wave action balance equation was formulated. The reflection and transmission coefficients induced by the physical model test were introduced to the numerical model. The model response with cylindrical slit type breakwater was compared with the impermeable breakwater case and the possibility of water quality improvement through the water circulation by the new structure was investigated. For numerical simulation, parameters of deepwater design wave from the prediction report II for overall deepwater design wave by KORDI were used and wind parameters from the 50years return period observed for 37years(1970~2006) were adopted in the numerical model. The response of west breakwater in Mijo port applying the NE and NNE waves, which were dominant in this area, was analyzed. It was found that the transmission characteristic of designed cylindrical slit breakwater was well presented in the numerical model.

  • In this study, wave damping due to a permeable bed of finite depth was modelled using a complementary mild-slope equation for stream function. The energy dissipating term in the mild-slope equation was presented in terms of stream function. In order to prevent re-reflection of reflected waves along the outer boundary, a delta-function-shaped source function was derived to generate a wave in a computational domain. Numerical experiments were conducted to measure the reflection coefficient of waves over a planar slope for various incident wave periods. The numerical result of the proposed model was compared with that of an integral equation method, showing good agreement in general. However, the proposed model showed relatively higher transmission rate for the larger permeability and the longer wavelength.

  • In this study, an efficient method of designing laminate composite radar absorbing structures (RAS) is proposed with consideration given to the structural shape so as to improve aircraft stealth performance. The calculation of the radar cross section (RCS) should be decreased to enhance the efficiency of the stochastic optimization when designing an RAS. In the proposed method, RAS are optimized to match up the input impedance of the minimal RCS, which is obtained by using physical optics and the transmission line theory. Single and double layer dielectric RAS for aircraft wings are employed as numerical examples and designed using the proposed method, RCS minimization and reflection coefficient minimization. The availability of the proposed method is assessed by comparing the similarity of the results and computation time with other design methods. According to the results, the proposed method produces the same results as the stochastic optimization, which adopts the RCS as the objective function, and can improve RAS design efficiency by reducing the number of RCS analyses.

  • We propose a method for increasing the bandwidth of a substrate-integrated-waveguide (SIW) cavity-backed antenna with taper-based micro-strip SIW transition feeding. For radio transmission, a circular slot is etched on top of the SIW cavity. For optimal antenna design, the slot is etched slightly away from the cavity center to generate circularly polarized waves. Simulations show a wide axial ratio bandwidth of 7.860% between 11.02 GHz and 11.806 GHz. Experimental results confirm a similar wide axial ratio bandwidth of 4.9% between 10.8 GHz and 11.35 GHz. An SIW feed from an inductive window excites the radiating circular slot, resulting in a simulated wide impedance range of 1.548 GHz (10.338 GHz-11.886 GHz) and bandwidth of 13.93%. Experimental results show a wide impedance of 2.08 GHz (10.2 GHz-12.08 GHz) and bandwidth of 18.84%. The SIW cavity-backed antenna creates a unidirectional pattern, leading to gains of 6.61 dBi and 7.594 dBi in simulations and experiments, respectively. The proposed antenna was fabricated on a Rogers RT/Duroid 5880 substrate, and the reflection coefficient, radiation patterns, and gains were tested and compared using a computer simulator. The developed broadband antenna seems suitable for X-band applications.

  • The preliminary study was carried out to utilize the rolling porous pendulum plate as a hybrid system combining blocking and extracting of wave energy. The Galerkin method suggested by Porter and Evans (1995) was used to solve the diffraction and radiation problems to obtain reflection and transmission coefficient, roll displacement, extracted power. The Galerkin method provides better convergence than the matched eigenfunction expansion method (MEEM), which improves the accuracy of the analytical solution even if the CPU time is shorter. The porous plate can not be said to be more effective than the impermeable plate in terms of wave energy extraction and wave blocking, but it has the advantage of reducing the wave load and exchanging seawater.
