This paper deals with a real-time image based relighting system for tangible video teleconference. The proposed image based relighting system renders the extracted human object using the virtual environmental images. The proposed system can homogenize virtually the lighting environments of remote users on the video teleconference, or render the humans like they are in the virtual places. To realize the video teleconference, the paper obtains the 3D object models of users in real-time using the controlled lighting system. In this paper, we use single color camera and synchronized two directional flash lights. Proposed system generates pure shading images using on and off flash images subtraction. One pure shading reflectance map generates a directional normal map from multiplication of each reflectance map and basic normal vector map. Each directional basic normal map is generated by inner vector calculation of incident light vector and camera viewing vector. And the basic normal vector means a basis component of real surface normal vector. The proposed system enables the users to immerse video teleconference just as they are in the virtual environments.

Most researches have created the impervious surface map by using low-spatial-resolution satellite imagery and are inefficient to generate the object-based impervious map with a broad area. In this study, segment-based impervious surface mapping algorithm is proposed using the RapidEye satellite imagery in order to map impervious area. At first, additional bands are generated by using TOA reflectance conversion RapidEye data. And then, shadow and water class are extracted using training data of converted reflectance image. Object-based impervious surface can be generated by spectral mixture analysis based on land cover map of Ministry of Environment with medium scale, in the case of other classes except shadow and water classes. The experiment shows that result by our method represents high classification accuracy compared to reference data, quantitatively.
An effective method to render realistic metallic surface in realtime application is proposed. The proposed method perturbs the normal vectors on the metallic surface to represent small scratches. In general, bump map or normal map method is used to gnerate normal vector perturbation. However, those methods do not show plausible light scattering when applied to anisotropic reflection surface. In order to express metallic surface reflectance, MDF-based BRDF is generally employed. Therefore, the simple normal perturbation does not produce satisfactory metal rendering results. The proposed method employs not only normal perturbation but also deformation of the microfacet distribution function(MDF) that determines the reflectance properties on the surface. The MDF deformation increases the realism of metal rendering. The proposed method can be easily implemented with GPU programs, and works well in realtime environments.

This study analyzed the spectral reflectance characteristics of kaolinite and ASTER(Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflectance Radiometer) image to extract the distribution of kaolin mines in Hadong area, Gyeongsangnam-do. The band ratio model was applied to extract kaolinite using difference of wavelength absorption band distinct feature of minerals from ASTER image which is the major mineral of kaolin mines. According to the spectral reflectance curve of kaolinite, it showed the absorption features around 0.96 and $2.18{\mu}m$ by Al-OH. Also, it affected 1.24 and $1.38{\sim}1.41{\mu}m$ by OH. Applying for new band ratio model from the spectral features of kaolinite to ASTER image, it is possible to make the distribution map of mining traces including present- developing kaolin mines.

Since the first shape-form-shading technique was developed by Horn in the early 1970s, many different approaches have been continuously emerging in the past three decades. Some of them improve existing techniques, while others are completely new approaches. Using the image reflectance equation, they estimate the 3-D shape of an object utilizing adequate constraints. Each algorithm applies different constraints such as brightness, smoothness, and integrability to solve the shape-from-shading problem. Especially for symmetric objects, a symmetry constraint is proposed to improve the performance of existing shape-from-shading algorithm in this paper. The symmetry constraint is imposed to a conventional algorithm and then the improvement in the performance of 3-D shape reconstruction is proved by quantitatively comparing the depth and gradient errors.
This paper is to present an approach for generating coarse resolution (MODIS data) fraction images of forested region in Korea peninsula using forest type area fraction derived from high resolution data (ASTER data) in regional forest area. A 15-m spatial resolution multi-spectral ASTER image was acquired under clear sky conditions on September 22, 2003 over the forested area near Seoul, Korea and was used to select each end-member that represent a pure reflectance of component of forest such as different forest, bare soil and water. The area fraction of selected each end-member and a 500-m spatial resolution MODIS reflectance product covering study area was applied to a linear mixture inversion model for calculating the fraction image of forest component across the South Korea. We found that the area fraction values of each end-member observed from high resolution image data could be used to separate forest cover in low resolution image data.
This research presents particulate distribution map of tidal flats of Hampyung bay using reflectance which extracted from satellite data and field survey data during same periods. The spectrum of particulate composition obtained from Landsat TM data was analysed and 7 scenes of satellite image were classified with ISODATA and K-MEANS methods. The results of unsupervised classification were estimated with in-situ data. The classification accuracy of ISODATA and K-MAMS methods were 84.3% and 85.7%. For validation of classified results of multi-temporal satellite images, TM image of May 1999(reference data), which was classified with field survey data was compared with classified results of multi-temporary satellite data.

A hybrid approach integrating both high-resolution and hyperspectral data sets was used to map vegetation cover of a coastal lowland area in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Three common grass species (broomsedge, natal redtop, and pili) and other non-grass species, primarily shrubs, were focused in the study. A 3-step, hybrid approach, combining an unsupervised and a supervised classification schemes, was applied to the vegetation mapping. First, the IKONOS 1-m high-resolution data were classified to create a binary image (vegetated vs. non--vegetated) and converted to 20-meter resolution percent cover vegetation data to match AVIRIS data pixels. Second, the minimum noise fraction (MNF) transformation was used to extract a coherent dimensionality from the original AVIRIS data. Since the grasses and shubs were sparsely distributed and most image pixels were intermingled with lava surfaces, the reflectance component of lava was filtered out with a binary fractional cover analysis assuming that tile total reflectance of a pixel was a linear combination of the reflectance spectra of vegetation and the lava surface. Finally, a supervised approach was used to classify the plant species based on tile maximum likelihood algorithm.
The N basis functions are typically chosen so that Surface reflectance functions(SRFs) and spectral power distributions (SPDs) can be accurately reconstructed from their N-dimensional vector codes. Typical rendering applications assume that the resulting mapping is an isomorphism where vector operations of addition, scalar multiplication, component-wise multiplication on the N-vectors can be used to model physical operations such as superposition of lights, light-surface interactions and inter-reflection. The vector operations do not mirror the physical. However, if the choice of basis functions is restricted to characteristic functions then the resulting map between SPDs/SRFs and N-vectors is anisomorphism that preserves the physical operations needed in rendering. This paper will show how to select optimal characteristic function bases of any dimension N (number of basis functions) and also evaluate how accurately a large set of Munsell color chips can approximated as basis functions of dimension N.
This paper proposes a biological iridescence BRDF(Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function) compression and rendering method. In the graphics technology, iridescence sometimes is named structure colors. The main features of these symptoms are shown transform of color and brightness by varying viewpoint. Graphics technology to render this is the BRDF technology. The BRDF methods enable realistic representation of varying view direction, but it requires a lot of computing power because of large data. In this paper, we obtain reflection map from iridescence BRDF, analyze color of reflection map and propose representation method by several colorfully concentric circle. The one concentric circle represents beam width of reflection ray by one normal vector. In this paper, we synthesize rough concentric by using several virtually optical normal vectors. And we obtain spectrum information from concentric circles passing through the center point. The proposed method enables IBR(image based rendering) technique which results is realistic illuminance and spectrum distribution by one texture from reduced BRDF data within spectrum.
