This paper propose a new power conditioner topology with intelligent power management controller that integrates multiple renewable energy sources such as solar energy, wind energy and fuel cell energy with battery backup to make best use of their operating characteristics and obtain better reliability than that could be obtained by single renewable energy based power supply. The proposed embedded controller is programmed for maintaining a constant voltage at PCC, maximum power point tracking for solar PV panel and WTG and power flow control by regulating the reference currents of the controller on instantaneous basis based on the power delivered by the sources and load demand. Instantaneous variation in reference currents of the controller enhances the controller response as it accommodates the effect of continuously varying solar insolation and wind speed in the power management. The power conditioner uses a battery bank with embedded controller based online SOC estimation and battery charging system to suitably sink or source the input power based on the load demand. The simulation results of the proposed power management system for a standalone solar/WTG/fuel cell fed hybrid power supply with real time solar radiation and wind velocity data collected from solar centre, KEC for a sporadically varying load demand is presented in this paper and the results are encouraging in reliability and stability perspective.
This paper proposes a simple adaptive sliding mode control algorithm for controlling a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) of a MW-class direct-driven wind turbine system. The proposed adaptive sliding mode controller does not require accurate knowledge of the PMSG parameter or turbine torque values. The proposed controller can accurately track the reference angular speed computed by the maximum power point tracking(MPPT) algorithm. Finally, this paper gives Matlab/Simulink simulation results to verify the practicality and effectiveness of the proposed adaptive sliding mode controller.
In this paper, we propose a near optimal controller design method for permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs) of MW-class direct-driven wind turbine systems based on SDRE (State Dependent Riccati Equation) approach. Using the solution matrix of an SDRE, we parameterize the optimal controller gain. We present a simple algorithm to compute the near optimal controller gain. The proposed optimal controller can enable PMSGs to precisely track the reference speed determined by the MPPT algorithm. Finally, numerical simulation results are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed optimal controller.
An efficient and accurate algorithm is proposed to estimate flutter safety factor of suspension bridges satisfying prescribed reliability levels. Uncertainties which arise from the basic wind speed at the bridge deck location, critical flutter velocity, the wind conversion factor from a scaled model to the prototype structure and the gust speed factor are incorporated. The proposed algorithm integrates the concepts of the inverse reliability method and the calculation method of the critical flutter velocity of suspension bridges. The unique feature of the proposed method is that it offers a tool for flutter safety assessment of suspension bridges, when the reliability level is specified as a target to be satisfied by the designer. Accuracy and efficiency of this method with reference to three example suspension bridges is studied and numerical results validate its superiority over conventional deterministic method. Finally, the effects of various parameters on the flutter safety factor of suspension bridges are also investigated.

The purpose of this work is to compare and analyze computed results with experimental data of NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) Phase VI for the whole operating conditions of various wind speeds using $\kappa-\omega$ turbulence model provided in the commercial code, FLUENT. Performance results such as power coefficient, shaft torque, pressure coefficient show a good agreement with experimental data. But, root bending moment is over-predicted than the experimentally measured value by about 30% for the whole operating conditions because of indefinite measurement reference. Nevertheless, these results qualitatively show a good tendency in the aspect of aerodynamic performance. As wind speed increases, streamlines on the surface of blade show more and more complex pattern.
In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of flow around the Daeyeon automatic weather station (AWS 942) and established formulas estimating inflow wind speeds at a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model domain for the area around Pukyong national university using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. Simulated wind directions at the AWS 942 were quite similar to those of inflows, but, simulated wind speeds at the AWS 942 decreased compared to inflow wind speeds except for the northerly case. The decrease in simulated wind speed at the AWS 942 resulted from the buildings around the AWS 942. In most cases, the AWS 942 was included within the wake region behind the buildings. Wind speeds at the inflow boundaries of the CFD model domain were estimated by comparing simulated wind speeds at the AWS 942 and inflow boundaries and systematically increasing inflow wind speeds from $1m\;s^{-1}$ to $17m\;s^{-1}$ with an increment of $2m\;s^{-1}$ at the reference height for 16 inflow directions. For each inflow direction, calculated wind speeds at the AWS 942 were fitted as the third order functions of the inflow wind speed by using the Marquardt-Levenberg least square method. Estimated inflow wind speeds by the established formulas were compared to wind speeds observed at 12 coastal AWSs near the AWS 942. The results showed that the estimated wind speeds fell within the inter quartile range of wind speeds observed at 12 coastal AWSs during the nighttime and were in close proximity to the upper whiskers during the daytime (12~15 h).
Sensitivity analysis of wind resource micrositing has been performed through the application case at the Antarctic King Sejong station with the most representative micrositing softwares: WAsP, WindSim and Meteodyn WT. The wind data obtained from two met-masts separated 625m were applied as a climatology input condition of micro-scale wind mapping. A tower shading effect on the met-mast installed 20m apart from the warehouse has been assessed by the CFD software Fluent and confirmed a negligible influence on wind speed measurement. Theoretically, micro-scale wind maps generated by the two met-data located within the same wind system and strongly correlated meteor-statistically should be identical if nothing influenced on wind prediction but orography. They, however, show discrepancies due to nonlinear effects induced by surrounding complex terrain. From the comparison of sensitivity analysis, Meteodyn WT employing 1-equation turbulence model showed 68% higher RMSE error of wind speed prediction than that of WindSim using the ${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model, while a linear-theoretical model WAsP showed 21% higher error. Consequently, the CFD model WindSim would predict wind field over complex terrain more reliable and less sensitive to climatology input data than other micrositing models. The auto-validation method proposed in this paper and the evaluation result of the micrositing softwares would be anticipated a good reference of wind resource assessments in complex terrain.

The fluctuating wind induced vibration is one of the most important factors which has been taken into account in the design of long-span bridge due to the low stiffness and low natural frequency. Field measurement characteristics of sustained wind on structure site can provide accurate wind load parameters for wind field simulation and structural wind resistance design. As a suspension bridge with 1490 m main span, the Runyang Suspension Bridge (RSB) has high sensitivity to fluctuating wind. The simultaneous and continuously wind environment field measurement both in mid-span and on tower top is executed from 2005 up to now by the structural health monitoring system installed on this bridge. Based on the recorded data, the wind characteristic parameters, including mean wind speed, wind direction, the turbulence intensity, the gust factors, the turbulence integral length, power spectrum and spatial correlation, are analyzed in detail and the coherence functions of those parameters are evaluated using statistical method in this paper. The results indicate that, the turbulence component of sustain wind is larger than extremely strong winds although its mean wind speed is smaller; the correlation between turbulence parameters is obvious; the power spectrum is special and not accord with the Simiu spectrum and von Karman spectrum. Results obtained in this study can be used to evaluate the long term reliability of the Runyang Suspension Bridge and provide reference values for wind resistant design of other structures in this region.
