To improve the uniformity of slurry spreading and to reduce the odor problem, a hose slurry spreader was developed, which spread the slurry near to the surface of the soil. First, the uniformity of slurry spreading was investigated. The best result of 8.1 % CV was obtained at the rotor speed of 250 rpm than any other speeds for the swine slurry, which contains 13.6% of dry matter. In case of dairy cattle slurry, which contains 8.2% of dry matter, the uniformity has the best result of CV 7.2% by high rotor speed of 330 rpm. A high speed of rotor has built a sufficient pressure in the distributor and discharged a uniform quantity of slurry through the hoses. Therefore, in practical use one should work with rotor speed over 300 rpm to maximize the uniformity of slurry spreading. Second, odor test was done with the swine slurry. While the conventional spreader shows ∑ value 440, the hose slurry spreader and its combination of disk harrow show ∑ value 258 and 184 respectively. With the air dilution sensual test and a 3-point odor bag, the conventional spreader shows 66.9 or 35.4 point and by the hose slurry spreader is 9.7 or 11.1 point. So, the developed spreader was found to have a greater effect on the reduction of odor problem. Finally, it is recommended to spread certain amount of the slurry for paddy field equivalent to the chemical fertilizer based on the N-content. It means 22 tons of swine slurry per ha. Since most of the livestock farms possess less arable land, a system of linking farms is necessary to utilize the slurry crossover the farms. The cost of slurry utilization including filling, transport spreading and brokerage is 3200-6800 Won/㎥ in accordance with the transport distance.
Ammonia (NH3) emitted from the use of fertilizers during agricultural practice generates particulate matter and odors. The application of carbonized rice husk, an eco-friendly material, is one of the measures used to reduce NH3. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the application rate and pH of carbonized rice husk on NH3 emissions and soil quality. An experiment to assess NH3 emissions was performed in a glasshouse using a static chamber method. The pH of the carbonized rice husk was divided into acidic, neutral, and basic groups, and the carbonized rice husk application rates were 1, 3, and 5% of the soil weight. NH3 emissions showed a sharp increase within three days after the inorganic fertilizer was applied. Subsequently, NH3 emissions decreased rapidly after basal fertilization compared to primary and secondary top-dressing. When carbonized rice husks were applied to soil, NH3 emissions decreased in all treatments, and neutral carbonized rice husk was the most effective in comparison with acidic and basic carbonized rice husk. The application rate of carbonized rice husk and NH3 emissions showed a negative correlation, and the lowest emissions were found in units with a 5% application rate. Also, there was no statistically significant difference between NH3 emissions according to the application rate of carbonized rice husk, and when carbonized rice husks were applied at a 5% rate, soil OM increased excessively. Therefore, it is recommended to apply only 1% neutral carbonized rice husk to most effectively reduce NH3 emissions in the soil.

Ultrafine dust causes asthma and respiratory and cardiovascular diseases when inhaled. Ammonia (NH3) plays a big role in ultrafine dust formation in the atmosphere by reacting with nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx) emitted from various sources. The agricultural sector is the single largest contributor of NH3, with the vast majority of emissions ensuing from fertilizers and livestock sector. Interest in using biochar to attenuate these NH3 emissions has grown. This experiment was conducted to study the effects of using rice hull biochar pyrolyzed at three different temperatures of 250℃ (BP 4.6, biochar pH 4.6), 350℃ (BP 6.8), and 450℃ (BP 10.3) on the emission of ammonia from soil fertilized with urea. The emissions of NH3 initially increased as the experiment progressed but decreased after peaking at the 84th hour. The amount of emitted NH3 was lower in soil with biochar amendments than in that without biochar. Emissions amongst biochar-amended soils were lowest for the BP 6.8 treatment, followed in an ascending order by BP 10.3 and BP 4.6. Since BP 6.8 biochar with neutral pH resulted in the lowest amount of NH3 emitted, it can be concluded that biochar's pH has an effect on the emissions of NH3. The results of this study, therefore, indicate that biochar can abate NH3 emissions and that a neutral pH biochar is more effective at reducing gaseous emissions than either alkaline or acidic biochar.
Pig slurry (PS) is the most applicable recycling option as an alternative organic fertilizer. The application of pig slurry has the risk of air pollution via atmospheric ammonia (NH3) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emission. The zeolite has a porous structure that can accommodate a wide variety of cations, thus utilizing for the potential additive of deodorization and gas adsorption. This study aimed to investigate the possible roles of zeolite in mitigating NH3 and N2O emission from the pig slurry applied to the maize cropping. The experiment was composed of three treatments: 1) non-N fertilized control, 2) pig slurry (PS) and 3) pig slurry mixed with natural zeolite (PZ). Both of NH3 and N2O emission from applied pig slurry highly increased by more than 3-fold compared to non-N fertilized control. The NH3 emission from the pig slurry was dominant during early 14 days after application and 20.1% of reduction by zeolite application was estimated in this period. Total NH3 emission through whole period of measurement was 0.31, 1.33, and 1.14 kg ha-1. Nitrous oxide emission in the plot applied with pig slurry was also reduced by zeolite treatment by 16.3%. Significant increases in forage and ear yield, as well as nutrient values were obtained by pig slurry application, while no significant effects of zeolite were observed. These results indicate that the application of zeolite and pig slurry efficiently reduces the emission of ammonia and nitrous oxide without negative effects on maize crop production.
This study was conducted to investigate the perception and understanding parents had regarding environment friendly agricultural products being used for school foodservice. A trained practitioner surveyed 221 parents of children at elementary schools in Daejeon using a questionnaire, after which the resulting data were analyzed by a Chi-square test. Overall, the parent's responses regarding the foodservice were positive. However, most of the parents do not participate (65%) in the school foodservice if they work, and those that do participate primarily work as meal service aides (58.1%). Parents indicated that the work of urgent field of inspection on food materials (69.9%), and the reason of an agreement (98.2%) for them were the students' health (68.4%). In addition, most parents were positive about the possibility of replacing foods used in the school with environment friendly products (51.6%) and felt that the government should pay the additional expense associated with their replacement. Furthermore, the majority of the parent's surveyed felt that children should be supplied with vegetables (54.9%) purchased directly from farms. The parents' satisfaction with the meal service (25.1%) was lower than that of the students (54.1%). The reason for the satisfaction reported by the parents was concern regarding the health of their children (53.3%). In addition, the majority of the parents (47.3%) responded that environment friendly agricultural products differ from general agricultural products because insecticides and fertilizer were not used. The main objection parents had to using environment friendly products was their cost (59.1%), and most parents felt that a realistic solution to this problem was unified purchase (41.4%). Besides, a problem when replacing with them was the expensive price (38.1%) and true or false (37.7%), and the students' satisfaction (59.5%) was selected the most in an effect of using them, diversity of the product (39.1%) and price reduction (32.6%) for a solution of the increase of using them.
Many paddy cultivating farmers in the country are forced to use their limited resources to produce adequate food for their family, leading to the degradation and reduction in potential of these resources. The yield levels of paddy at the farmers' level and in the Front Line Demonstrations (FLDs) conducted in the farmers' fields is not at par with potential yield of the paddy variety. The gap between potential yield of crop variety and yield realized in FLDs refers to Research gap and the yield gap between FLDs and due to farmers' practice refers to Extension gap. The earlier studies conducted in India in general and in Andhra Pradesh in particular highlighted the existence of both research and extension gaps with reference to paddy. It is essential that, the narrowing of both research and extension gaps is not static, but dynamic considering the influence of technological interventions in boosting paddy yields at FLDs level and at farmers' level and also with the improvement of the yield potential of paddy varieties. This calls for integrated and holistic approaches to address these two gaps and with this background, the researcher aimed at this in depth study. The findings revealed that, research gaps are high with reference to weed management and pest management and extension gaps are high with reference to farm mechanization followed by fertilizer management. Reliable source of seed, capital use and frequency of meetings with Scientists or Agricultural Officers significantly influence the extension gaps in paddy. Farmers also prioritized socio-economic and technical constraints and the analysis infers that, it is high time now for the farmers to adopt the planned technological interventions on scientific scale to minimize the extension gaps to the extent possible. As the enabling environment in the State of Andhra Pradesh is highly encouraging for the farmers with relevant policy instruments in the form of subsidized inputs, free power, credit at concessional rates of interest, constructing irrigation projects etc., the adoption of the proposed technological interventions significantly contribute to minimizing both research and extension gaps in paddy cultivation in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh.
Oilseed rape is known to crop having low nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) but requires high levels of N fertilizer. NUE is associated with N remobilization from source to sink organ, consequently affects seed yield. Remobilization of leaf N is also related to transport of C/N metabolites in phloem. However, interaction between seed yield and phloem transport was not fully documented. In response to seed yield, N and C metabolites and their transport into seed from bolting to pod filling stage investigated in two contrasting genotypes (Capitol and Pollen) cultivated under ample (HN) or limiting nitrate (LN) supply. Seed yield was significantly reduced in N limitation and its reduction rate was much lower in Capitol than in Pollen compared to HN treated plants. Amino acid and protein content was higher in Capitol than in Pollen at bolting stage. They gradually decreased during plant development but not significant between two cultivars and/or two treatments. Glucose, fructose and sucrose content were 1.8-,1.6- or 1.25-fold higher in LN condition than in HN condition, respectively. Amino acid and sucrose content in phloem were largely higher in Capitol than in Pollen under LN condition. These results indicate that the higher seed yield might be related to greater transport ability of amino acid and sucrose in phloem under LN condition.
Anaerobic digestion has recently attracted all over the world and Korea also shows no exception. The major benefits of anaerobic digestion are energy production, water pollution control, pathogen reduction and effective manure production. In Korea it was recognized in late sixties that there was a positive need to find alternative energy for farmers household. The main traditional energy sources in rural area were crop residues and forestry products. Therefore Office of Rural Development through its Rural Guidance Bureau disseminated about 29,000 household biogas units from 1969 to 1975 to provide cooking fuel for farmers household and to improve the mode of farmers living standards. The units were welcomed by farmers at that time. Now, however, most of them are not using due to a number of reasons associated with cold winter and some techno-economical problems (in those day, fossil fuel was quite expensive to compare with other prices and since then farmers income was quickly increased). The author studied on bag type household biogas plant to solve some technical problems of existing household biogas plants, but this also has little appeal for the farmers. From 1977 author studied on village scale biogas plant with two pilot plants. From the viewpoint of energy production, COD removal, kill rate of pathogen and fertilizer value, the results obtained from the experiments were quite promising, but the construction cost of the village scale biogas plant was too high for the farmers in Korea. To find most suitable biogas plant for farmers in Korea through the simplifying the biogas digester, the author developed batch-load biogas plant. By feeding coarse crop residues and manures, total solids concentrations of the batch-load biogas plant are about 28 percent which is much higher than continous digester of 5-8 percent. The batch-load biogas plant was welcomed by many farmers in Korea when it was reported on TV and newspapers. The plant was disseminated 154 units in 1982, 766 units in 1983 and 812 units in 1984 as a promissing project. Besides these biogas plant experiments, studies were also conducted 1) to determine gas production rate with agricultural wastes, 2) to evaluate the effect of loading rate, dilution, retention time on biogas production, 3) to project the amount of potencial energy from agricultural wastes.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of pyroligneous acid on turfgrass growth and to propose usage for sustainable management on Korean golf course green. Each plot was treated with 0, 300, 500, and 800 acid to water solution. On all the plots, turfgrass growth increment and visual quality were measured at fried times. The data were subjected to paired samples t-test and corelation analysis. The summarized results are as follows; 1) Leaf growth increment, density, and root spread depth of turfgrass treated with 1: 500 and 1: 800 diluted pyroligneous acid were significantly superior to the control. Particularly, 1: 500 diluted solution was superior to the others. 2) Color, texture, and uniformity of turfgrass treated with 1: 500 and 1: 800 diluted pyroligneous acid were significantly superior to the control. Especially, 1: 500 diluted solution tended to be superior to the others. 3) There were no symptoms of disease in all plots treated with the diluted pyroligneous acid. 1 500 and 1: 800 diluted pyroligneous acid were not thought to trigger or promote disease. 4) Before and after investigating the effect of pyroligneous acid on turfgrass growth ,the soils were analyzed. In all treatments, the chemical properties of the soils did not change noticeably. The chemical properties of the soils might be not changed by the diluted pyroligneous acid treatments. 5) Considering the results mentioned above, 1: 500 diluted pyroligneous acid was the most effective. Though pyroligneous acid is an organic fertilizer and contains only a little nitrogen and phosphorus, 1: 500 diluted pyroligneous acid promoted turfgrass growth effectively. Thus this use might lead to a reduction in the amount of fertilizers used and result in ecologically responsive management of Korean golf courses.
SWAT model would be applied to evaluate the pollutant removal capacity with various best management practices (BMPs) in Kyongan stream watershed which plays an important role in water quality conservation and improvement of Paldang reservoir. The methods for the representation of various BMPs scenarios with SWAT is developed and evaluated. Riparian buffer strip, agricultural conservation practices to reduce fertilizer, sediment, and nutrients occurring from farm field (Grassed swale, Contour farming/Parallel terrace, Field border, Farm retention pond, Grade stabilization structure), and washland such as wetland and pond to extend detention and improve water quality are represented in SWAT. And to represent the expansion of existing Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs) in Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), reduction effect for point source pollutants was simulated. As the result of simulation, the removal rates of SS, TN, TP from scenarios of Kyongan stream watershed are the average annual SS yield by 5.2% to 69.2%, the average annual TN yield by 0.5% to 26.3%, and the average annual TP yield by 1.3% to 32.5%, respectively. This study has demonstrated that the SWAT is a very reliable and useful water quality and quantity assessment tool, and the BMPs representation in SWAT for watershed management is able to effectively simulate in Kyongan Stream watershed.
