  • Fine sediment loadings from agricultural watersheds have led to habitat degradation in Lake Takkobu, northern Japan. Fifteen lake sediment core samples were obtained and analyzed to develop a chronology using physical sediment characters, $^{137}Cs$, and tephra. The reconstructed sedimentation rates over the past ca 300 years suggested that sedimentation rates increased drastically after land use development. With a natural sedimentation rate of 0.1-1.1 mm $year^{-1}$ until 1898, lake sedimentation accelerated to 0.6-12.8 mm $year^{-1}$ after 1898. The sedimentation rates after land use change, such as forestry, river engineering works, and agricultural development, were about 6-12 times higher than that under natural conditions, leading to accelerated lake shallowing over the last ca 100 years. Sedimentation rates between 1898 and 1963 differed with location in the lake because of spatial variation in the sediment flux from the contributing rivers and their watersheds. The sedimentation rate in the southern zone between 1898 and 1963 was significantly higher than that in the middle and northern zones, reflecting active sediment production associated with forestry for charcoal production and canal construction for transportation in the southern watersheds and wetlands. The sedimentation rate after 1963 did not vary among the three zones, because decreasing sedimentation was found in most of the southern sites whereas an increasing trend was observed in the middle and northern sites. This result can be explained by shallowing of lake-bottom morphology with sedimentation and the resultant reduction of sediment retention capacity in the southern zone. Moreover, the sedimentation rate at sampling sites close to river mouths increased by 5-32 times compared with natural rates before 1898. The Kushiro River, into which Lake Takkobu drains under regular flow conditions, further contributed to an increased sedimentation rate, because water from the Kushiro River flows back into Lake Takkobu during floods.

  • Soil and water temperature were measured at different distances from the irrigation inlet of a Paddy land supplied with $16^{\circ}C$ water. The rice growth and yields of Nongbaek variety (Japonica) and Milyang 23 variety (Indica${\times}$Japonica)were interrelated with average soil and water temperature from tillering to heading stage. Water temperature was asymtotically increased to $21^{\circ}C$ as cold water forwarded, while the distribution of soil temperature showed linear shape with distance overall, water temperature was 1 to $2^{\circ}C$ higher than soil temperature. Cold soil and water temperature shorterned culm length and panicle exertion and retarded heading date resulting in yield reduction, Response of rice growth and yield to water temperature was apparently different between two varieties. Nongbaek variety produced no grains below $17^{\circ}C$, but it's reproductive growth was possible from 17 to $20^{\circ}C$. A normal yield could be obtained at $21^{\circ}C$. Comparatively, no reproductive growth of Milyang 23 variety was Possible even at $19^{\circ}C$.

  • The experiment was conducted to elucidate the growth response of rice seedling to heavy metals, copper and zinc. The copper and zinc concentration in rice seedling was 50mg/l and 100mg/l, respectively. Germination. chlorophyll and organic compounds were investigated in seedling of rice with or without heavy metals. Root growth and germination were inhibited at 50mg/l Cu and at 100mg/l compared to control and such reduction in growth was more remarkable at 100mg/l Zn than at 50mg/l Cu. Chlorophyll content was slightly reduced at both 50mg/l Cu and 100mg/l Zn. Malic acid was remarkably increased at 50mg/l Cu compared with that at Zn 100mg/l regardless of rice cultivars. The content of organic acids such as succinic, citric, and malic acid and free proline was increased with treatment of copper and zinc.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the possibllity of composting from cow manure using earthworms. In order to rear earthworms safely and control moisture soil was used as conditioner. Fusarium oxysporum and Fusarium sp.1 were isolated from soil and two isolates of Bacillus sp. were selected as antagonists from earthworm casts. By rearing earthworm, C/N ratio was reduced by 40.9% and 41.9% after 28 days, reducing sugar was also decreased by 37.1% and 37.5%. On the other hand, reduction of C/N ratio in cow manure alone was 9.67% and reducing sugar was 12.01%, respectively. Bacillus sp. was apparently increased in earthworm casts than in ordinary soil. It seemed that the earthworm casts contained antibiotic subatance.

  • An experiment was carried out to find out the effects of water foxtail on weed control and rice yield as well as on the reduction of nitrogen application in no tillage transplanted paddy field. Paddy field was dominated by water foxtail whose soil covering degree was adjusted from 8 to 6 by treatment of paraquat (70 l /10a of solution diluted by 1, 000 times). Thirty five-day old seedling was mechanically transplanted and reduced nitrogen, 80% of conventional application was applied at the paddy field. The higher failure in seedling stand was observed at higher degree of soil covering by water foxtail. The failure of seedling stand with covering degree of 8(no paraquat) was 37.4%, while that of covering degree of 6(paraquat-treated) was 12.3%. However, the seedling stand failure was completely recovered at covering degree of six at two weeks after transplanting. The mechanical transplanting made water foxtail in the paddy field fall on the ground whose panicle part was recovered from falling sometimes after transplanting and whole plant died with slow scenesence untill the late of June. But the water foxtail affected by paraquat produced the new panicle from uppernode of stem with dead leaves at early of June and it become die slowly untill the early of July. Though several rice field weeds were observed in the order of Echinochloa crusgallis, Cyperus serotinus, Lemma paucicostata during the active tillering stage of rice, the value of weed control due to the dominance of water foxtail was 77~78%. The death and subsequent decay of water foxtail during the active tillering stage of rice induced the soil reduction which again defect the growth of rice root. The more vigerous rice growth was observed in the plot dominated with water foxtails, than control plot. The yields of rice in the water foxtail (degree 6) plot was 629kg per l0a as brown rice, the same as that of control plot. In conclusion, the no-tillage transplanting with control of covering degree of water foxtail (to degree 6) was effective in reduction of input cost such as herbicide and nitrogen fertilizer, as well as weed control without reduction of rice yield.

  • IPCC Guidelines have been updated after the first official announcement to get more precise estimation of GHG emissions. The goal of this study is to evaluate the implications of the IPCC Guidelines improvements including equations of country-specific parameter values for estimating GHG emissions for rice cultivation on the agricultural sector. In addition, we analyze the effects of emission factors associated with organic amendment applications. The results of this study are as follows; (1) the total GHG emissions of rice cultivation based on 1996 IPCC GL are 28% lower than those estimated by 2006 IPCC GL with the same year data; (2) GHGs can be reduced up to 60% through the assumption of organic fertilizer applications; (3) Jeonnam and Chungnam are the worst regions for GHG emissions on rice cultivation and Chungbuk shows the highest reduction rate of GHG emissions, about 40%.

  • Objective: This study was conducted to determine reduction of various odorous materials from a swine farm equipped with a continuous pit recirculation system (CPRS) with aerobically treated liquid manure. Methods: The CPRS is used in swine farms in South Korea, primarily to improve air quality in pig houses. In this study, CPRS consists of a manure aerobic treatment system and a fit recirculation system; the solid fraction is separated and composted, whereas the aerobically treated liquid fraction (290.0%±21.0% per day of total stored swine slurry) is continuously returned to the pit. Four confinement pig barns in three piggery farms were used; two were equipped with CPRS and the other two operated a slurry pit under the slatted floor. Results: All chemical contents of slurry pit manure in the control were greater than those of slurry pit manure in the CRPS treatment (p<0.05). Electrical conductivity and pH contents did not differ among treatments. The biological oxygen demand of the slurry pit treatment was greater than that of the other treatments (p<0.05). Total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and ammonia nitrogen contents of the slurry pit treatment were greater than those of other treatments (p<0.05). Odor intensity of the CPRS treatment was lower than that of the control at indoor, exhaust, and outside sampling points (p<0.05). The temperature and carbon dioxide of the CPRS treatment in the pig barn was significantly lower than those of control (p<0.05). All measured odorous material contents of the CPRS group were significantly lower than those of the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: The CPRS application in pig farms is considered a good option as it continuously reduces the organic load of animal manure and lowers the average odorant concentration below the threshold of detecting odorous materials.

  • Nitrogen (N) is the most important element during the process of plant growth, and the quality of crops varies depending on the amount of nitrogen present. Most of the nitrogen is used for plant growth, but approximately 10 - 20% of Nitrogen is carried away by the wind in the form of NH3. This volatilized NH3 reacts with various oxides in the atmosphere to generate secondary particulate matter. To address this, the present study attempts to reduce NH3 occurring in the soil using biochar at a specific pH. Biochar was used as a treatment with 1% (w·w-1) of the soil, and urea was applied at different levels of 160, 320, and 640 kg·N·ha-1. NH3 generated in the soil was collected using a dynamic column and analyzed using the indophenol blue method. NH3 showed the maximum emission within 4 - 7 days after the fertilizer treatment, decreasing sharply afterward. NH3 emission levels were reduced with the biochar treatment in all cases. Among them, the best reduction efficiency was found to be approximately 25% for the 320 kg·ha-1 + pH 6.7 biochar treatment. Consequently, in order to reduce the amount of NH3 generated in the soil, it is most effective to use pH 6.7 biochar and a standard amount (320 kg·N·ha-1) of urea.

  • To improve the uniformity of slurry spreading and to reduce the odor problem, a hose slurry spreader was developed, which spread the slurry near to the surface of the soil. First, the uniformity of slurry spreading was investigated. The best result of 8.1 % CV was obtained at the rotor speed of 250 rpm than any other speeds for the swine slurry, which contains 13.6% of dry matter. In case of dairy cattle slurry, which contains 8.2% of dry matter, the uniformity has the best result of CV 7.2% by high rotor speed of 330 rpm. A high speed of rotor has built a sufficient pressure in the distributor and discharged a uniform quantity of slurry through the hoses. Therefore, in practical use one should work with rotor speed over 300 rpm to maximize the uniformity of slurry spreading. Second, odor test was done with the swine slurry. While the conventional spreader shows ∑ value 440, the hose slurry spreader and its combination of disk harrow show ∑ value 258 and 184 respectively. With the air dilution sensual test and a 3-point odor bag, the conventional spreader shows 66.9 or 35.4 point and by the hose slurry spreader is 9.7 or 11.1 point. So, the developed spreader was found to have a greater effect on the reduction of odor problem. Finally, it is recommended to spread certain amount of the slurry for paddy field equivalent to the chemical fertilizer based on the N-content. It means 22 tons of swine slurry per ha. Since most of the livestock farms possess less arable land, a system of linking farms is necessary to utilize the slurry crossover the farms. The cost of slurry utilization including filling, transport spreading and brokerage is 3200-6800 Won/㎥ in accordance with the transport distance.
