Rebar work accounts for approximately 30% of the total construction costs for rebars and concrete. Recently, the high rising prices of rebars have become one of the principle factors of rising construction costs. Therefore, construction companies are putting much effort into loss reduction of rebars. Consequently, in this study, we wished to present loss reduction methods of rebars before the preparation of the placing drawings. To devise such methods, we collected previous case studies and analyzed methods that were applied for loss reduction. As a result of the analysis, we were able to find the following methods for loss reduction of rebars: method of reducing the number of splices at the mat foundation, method of reducing splice length at the internal columns or walls of the underground parking lot, method of reducing cap-ties of internal beams of basement floors excluding perimeter beams, and method of reducing anchorage length at the internal column or wall of the underground parking lot. Based on those analysis results, we presented our own loss reduction methods of rebars. Applying our methods resulted in considerable loss reduction.

This paper presents a computational study that explores the design of rigid steel frames by considering construction related costs. More specifically, two different aspects are investigated in this study focusing on the effects of (a) reducing the number of labor intensive rigid connections within a frame of given geometric layout, and (b) reducing the number of different member section types used in the frame. A genetic algorithm based optimization framework searches design space for these objectives. Unlike some studies that express connection cost as a factor of the entire frame weight, here connections and their associated cost factors are explicitly represented at the member level to evaluate the cost of connections associated with each beam. In addition, because variety in member section types can drive up construction related costs, its effects are evaluated implicitly by generating curves that show the trade off between cost and different numbers of section types used within the frame. Our results show that designs in which all connections are considered to be rigid can be excessively conservative: rigid connections can often be eliminated without any appreciable increase in frame weight, resulting in a reduction in overall cost. Eliminating additional rigid connections leads to further reductions in cost, even as frame weight increases, up to a certain point. These complex relationships between overall cost, rigid connections, and member section types are presented for a representative five-story steel frame.
Optimal design of structures against earthquake loads is often limited to reduce initial construction costs, while the cost induced to structures during their useful life may be several times greater than the initial costs. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the indirect costs due to earthquakes in the design process. In this research, an integrated methodology for calculating life cycle cost (LCC) of moment-resisting concrete frames is presented. Increasing seismic safety of structures and reducing human casualties can play an important role in determining the optimal design. Costs incurred for structures are added to the costs of construction, including the costs of reconstruction, financial losses due to the time spent on reconstruction, interruption in building functionality, the value of people's life or disability, and content loss are a major part of the future costs. In this research, fifty years of useful life of structures from the beginning of the construction is considered as the life cycle. These costs should be considered as factors of calculating indirect costs of a structure. The results of this work represent the life cycle cost of a 4 story, 7 story, and 10 story moment-resisting concrete frame by details. This methodology is developed based on the economic conditions of Iran in 2016 and for the case of Tehran city.
The domestic construction industry is becoming larger, high-rise and specialized. However, safety consciousness is still staying in low levels and falling accidents are apt to rise compared to other industries. So, the new way of safety management is required for reducing of the construction falling accidents. In this paper, we evaluate appropriateness of safety management on construction sites utilizing USN using smart safery equipment. Thus, we calculate loss costs of falling accidents considering accident rates and costs of the USN using smart safery equipment installation then compare both calculated costs. This research aims to propose the method for reduction of construction accidents in addition to conventional safety control methods by analyzing the propriety of applying USN using smart safery equipment on construction sites.
For the policy makers and managers as well as the workers at work, it is important to identify what affects, to what extent, the safety level and costs of work sites. Within this context, the author analyzes fifteen construction work sites of the Incheon International Airport from 1996 to 1999 and shows that the expenditures for safety personnel and education programs contribute to reducing industrial accident costs. In addition, the author demonstrates that the regression analysis out-performs Heinrich method in estimating the accident costs of those work sites.

The first full-scale u-City operation has started in Dongtan u-City. As local cities take over and operate the u-City, unexpected issues arise such as securing the budget of operating costs and self-providing the costs with business models utilizing the u-City assets. The paper presents a strategy for solving these issues. The strategy provides a foundation(infrastructure) for long-term operation models which may reduce the long-term operating costs. In order to establish the economic operating framework of u-City, suggested are some cost-reduction models based on the operating costs structure. For each model, a base framework with comparative analysis of operating costs is provided. With these models, each u-City may select a relevant model according to the characteristics of it. We hope that the framework provides the foundation for efficient and sustainable u-City operations.

Due to a waste of energy in korea, about 525,000 which are 75 percent of total buildings are at least 15 years old buildings that need remodeling. There are two current remodeling systems. One is a remodeling system to reduce a waste of resources from the reconstruction. The other is a green-remodeling system aimed to energy savings and reducing environmental costs. This study is to analyze quantitatively these current systems with respect to the cost-benefit caused by the life cycle and suggests the political and institutional implications through the interpretation of the results. For a quantitative analysis, we analyzed reducing maintenance costs and rent benefits with simulation by using opportunity costs, construction costs, plan costs and supervision costs as expense variables and using the reduced floor area ratio, institutional incentives, energy, water resources and certified emission reduction(CER) as benefit variables. As a result of the empirical study, the green-modeling was more beneficial in the field of environment such as the energy savings, however, the final benefits of remodeling which has no green building certification costs but more floor area ratio incentives were more economical. The green-remodeling system focused on reducing environmental costs and energy savings needs a equatable institutional incentive system.
This paper explains how eliminating contamination from the manufacturing processes will lead to better product quality and hence the need for reworking, a trouble free commissioning period and greatly improved production efficiency. All of these will reduce costs and energy usage. It will also ensure that the product is delivered to the customer in a condition that will ensure improved reliability and longer life, again reducing both energy and other operating costs. Correctly designing the contamination control measures will achieve and maintain the level of fluid cleanliness that is required by the end user. The filter is critical to cleanliness management and should be selected with the same degree of thought and consideration as for other major components. This paper explains the role that Cleanliness Management plays in the reducing the carbon footprint of systems and processes by making them perform more efficiently for longer periods. It also examines two differing ways of selecting filters to incorporate the features of newer designs, and shows how significant savings in the costs of ownership can be achieved using these approaches.

Recently, the number of complex construction projects, such as high-density development and long-span mega structure construction, has been increasing globally. Therefore, the construction duration has become an even more important factor for success. Nevertheless, in domestic residential construction projects, it usually takes more time than twice as much as North American cases. The long construction duration causes a number of problems, for example growth of financial costs, fall in productivity, and weakness of competitiveness. If the framework construction duration can be shortened to 3 ~ 4 days, then it is also expected to complete the finish work of building in shorter duration, be led to reduce the entire construction duration, and eventually to save a great deal of indirect costs. For shortening the construction duration, previous researches pointed out that the development of simplified plan design should precedes. But, in reality, lack of experience of new design and innovative techniques tends to be the obstacle to wide adoption of the simplified plan design in construction fields. In this paper, a simplified structural plan design is proposed, and the construction cost is quantitatively compared between when traditional construction technique is applied to the traditional plan and when the duration-shortening key technique is applied to the developed plan.

The development of structural solutions for high-speed or very high-speed tracks that minimize total life cycle costs of the system is a key issue to improve the operational profitability of new investments. In opposition to conventional ballasted tracks, slab track solutions can be a cost-effective solution, but only in the cases where the benefits due to the increase in track availability and the reduction of track maintenance offsets its much higher construction costs. In the cases where such investment is not feasible, it is worth to evaluate possible structural improvements to ballasted track that allow reducing its maintenance needs without increasing too much its construction costs. This paper evaluates the design requirements and the impact of improving conventional high-speed ballasted tracks by using a bituminous subballast layer. It is divided into two main parts: first the design requirements of the structural solutions with bituminous subballast and its possible benefits on high-speed track deterioration, and secondly the evaluation of the economic impact, in terms of construction costs, of using this structural solution material in future Spanish high-speed lines.
