One of the biggest environmental issues that our world has been facing is climate change. In order to cope with such environmental issues, the world is putting a great deal of effort into energy conservation. The building sector, in particular, consumes 36% of the energy consumed worldwide and emits considerable amount of greenhouse gases. Therefore, introduction of renewable energies in the building sector is highly recommended. Renewable energy sources that can be utilized in the building sector include sunlight, solar heat, geothermal heat, fuel cells and wind power. The wind power generation system which converts wind energy into electrical energy has advantages in that wind is an unlimited and pollution-free resource. It is suitable to be connected to existing buildings because many years of operational experience and the enhanced stability of the system have made it possible to downsize the electrical generator. In case of existing buildings, it is necessary to consider the live loads of the buildings to connect the wind power generation system. This paper, through the connection of the wind power generation with existing buildings, promotes reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and energy independence by reducing energy consumption in the building sector. In order to connect the wind power generation system with an exciting building, the live load of the building and the area of the rooftop should be considered. The installable model is selected by comparing the live load of the building and the load of the wind power generation system. The maximum number of the wind turbines that can be installed is obtained by considering the separation distance between the wind turbines within the area of the rooftop. Installations are divided into single installations and multiple installations of two different types of wind turbines. After determining the maximum installable number, the optimal model that can achieve the maximum annual power generation will be selected by comparing the respective total annual amount of the power generation of different models.
The present study has been conducted to tune a PID controller for large thermal systems such as a thermal environment chamber. In spite of large thermal mass of the thermal chamber under test, its response delay time was found to be negligible mainly due to high air recirculation rate. In general, heating and cooling capacities tend to be small compared the size of a thermal environment chamber, which leads to long transient periods of one hour or so. In the study, a PI tuning method is suggested which makes system responses faster while reducing overshoots and hunting by utilizing efficiently proportional band of actuators.
Recently energy management measures at the political level, for the purpose of reducing energy consumption in the building sector, are being actively introduced. As a practical method, the exterior insulation method, which is proven to effective in reducing the energy loss through walls, has been favored. In this study, detailed implementations are suggested to activate exterior insulation system which can improve the housing insulation performance. The newly designed Gang-form system with hanging scaffolding was suggested to revamp constructability for finishing outer wall. The research results are based on a multifaceted analysis of the current problems of exterior insulation systems, and on recommendations proposed by exterior insulation experts in the Charrette discussion. The study has indicates that the customized TACT schedule considering the site condition has shortened the construction period to 5 months from 7.5 months. Through utilizing the suggestions of this study, the prevalence of exterior insulation systems is expected to become widespread.
Recently, all of the world are facing with a serious environmental crisis of global warming due to excessive energy consumptions. The Korean Government, taking over 97% of dependence on foreign energy, has made various efforts on reducing energy and greenhouse gas emission under the motto of "Low-Carbon Green Growth". Since the building sector takes 24% of domestic energy consumption, many design standards and regulations on saving energy in new buildings have been established. However, applications of energy saving designs and techniques on the remodeling process at deteriorated buildings including educational ones have been lack. Under a situation where the number of deteriorated schools accounts for up to 50%, this paper evaluated the performances of factors for reducing energy at deteriorated middle school buildings through an energy simulation tool on a standard school model. As a result, among factors of insulation, window's SHGC, southern louver, indoor setup temperature, and system efficiency, all other factors except window's SHGC and southern louver proved contribute to reduce energy at deteriorated middle school buildings, compared with the baseline energy consumption.
The application of the high-performance insulation materials for buildings seems to be an essential measure for reducing energy use in buildings. Phenolic foam is a readily available insulation material with thermal conductivity of about 0.018 to 0.020 W/(mK). It has the advantage of higher thermal resistance and better fire resistance compared to other conventional building insulation materials. Insulation material used for building envelope is regarded as one of the decisive factors for building's energy load. Furthermore, the degradation of its thermal performance over time increasingly affects the building's energy use demand. Generally, the life span of conventionally built buildings is expected to be more than 50 years, so the long-term performance of insulation materials is critical. This paper aims to evaluate the long-term performance of phenolic form boards through an accelerated aging test. The tests were conducted according to BS EN 13166 and KS M ISO 11561. Based on the results of the accelerated aging test, the thermal performance variation of the material was analyzed, and then its aged value after 25 years was computed. Also, the characteristics of the phenolic foam board's long-term performance were also examined based on the standard testing methods adopted.

Existing buildings now represent the greatest opportunity to improve building energy efficiency. Building performance analysis is becoming increasingly important because decision makers can have a better visualization of their building's performance and quickly make the solution for improving building energy efficiency and reducing environmental impacts. Nowadays, building information models (BIMs) have been widely created during the design phase of new buildings, and it can be easily imported to third party software to conduct various analyses. However, a BIM is not always available for all existing buildings. Even if a BIM is available during the design and construction phases, it is very challenging to keep updating it while a building is aged. A manual process to create or update a BIM is very time consuming and labor intensive. A laser scanning technology has been a popular tool to create as-is BIM. However it still needs labor-intensive manual processes to create a BIM out of point clouds. This paper introduces automatic as-is simplified BIM creation from point clouds for energy simulations. A framework of decision support system that can assist decision makers on retrofits for existing buildings is introduced as well. A case study on a residential house was tested in this study to validate the proposed framework, and the technical feasibility of the developed system was positively demonstrated.
In December 2015, The Paris Agreement was adopted to undertake ambitious efforts to combat climate change. Korean government announced its goal of reducing the country's greenhouse gas emissions by up to 37% below business as usual projections by 2030 in 2015. The purpose of this study was to set up the calculation methodology of GHG emission($CO_{2e}$) in building sector and to estimate the annual GHG emission in building sector based on national energy consumption statistic. The GHG emission from buildings is about 135.8 million ton $CO_{2e}$ as of 2015, taking up about 19.6% of Korea's entire emission and is about 144.7 million ton $CO_{2e}$ in 2017. The GHG emission of building sector is increasing at annual rate of 2.0% from 2001 to 2017. The GHG emission from electricity consumption in buildings is 91.8 million ton $CO_{2e}$ in 2017, is the highest $CO_2$ emission by energy source. The results show that the intensity of GHG emission of residential building sector is $40.6kg-CO_{2e}/m^2{\cdot}yr$ and that of commercial building sector is $68.4kg-CO_{2e}/m^2{\cdot}yr$.
Nowdays the most critical problem is global warming and the most important reason is the high emition of carbondioxide. 23% of the use of carbondioxide is used in building and decreasing the use of it is very important. One of the biggest factor that can decrease the use of energy is developing the heat conducting ratio of the materials we use in building. Heat conducting ratio is the important factor in the use of reducing energy comsumation. In this research, there are methods about how to measure the heat conducting ratio, and the existing the representing measuring method which is Heat Flow Meter HFM 436, Laser Flash Analysis and find out about the TCi of the new method C-Therm and compare the results.
In general, building energy performance is evaluated with a detailed transient building energy simulation program. However, energy evaluation tools with the bin method are still used, because of their simple and easy way to calculate building energy performance, without reducing their precision. In this research, several heating and cooling degree day methods are compared, and evaluated with their performance for variable base temperature. This analysis considered about ten years of the continuous outdoor temperature, in the Seoul and Busan areas. It is concluded that the simplified bin method is more or less acceptable for Seoul and Busan, compared with the detailed hourly bin method.
