The Korean trident goby, Tridentiger brevispinis, lives in adverse habitats that can easily become hypoxic due to low precipitation, regional dry periods, and high amounts of solar radiation. Histological and morphometric studies revealed the goby's specialized skin (35.4-150.0㎛ in thickness), consisting of an epidermis and dermis. The thicker epidermis comprises an outermost surface layer (having taste buds, stratified fattened cells, mucous cells, pigment cells, and stratified polygonal cells), middle layer (having stratified polygonal cells), and stratum germinativum (stratified columnar cells). In particular, the dermis has scales, well-developed vascularization, and a few blood capillaries just above the basement membrane, and a reduced diffusion distance was present in the lateral body. Consequently, adaptations such as thicker epidermis, well-developed vascularization, few blood capillaries, and a reduced diffusion distance may provide cutaneous respiration for survival in poorly oxygenated water during the periodic dry season.
The cluster distributions for different concentrations of 1,4-dibromonaphthalene (DBN) in 4,4'-dibromobenzophenone (DBBP)/1,4-dibromonaphthalene (DBN) choleic acid were determined by a computer simulation in order to model the energy transfer dynamics. The results of the simulation indicate that long range interaction between molecules further apart than nearest does not occur and energy transfer efficiency is restricted by single range interaction. The results also demonstrate that the trapping is diffusion limited. The energy transfer rate is reduced by a factor of 15 in DBBP/DBN choleic acid realtive to that in DBBP/DBN doped into polystyrene due to the larger distance between molecules.
We report on electrochemical signal amplification using gap electrodes based on the redox cycling between gap electrodes. The distance between electrodes was controlled from $2{\mu}m$ to a few hundreds of nanometer by chemical deposition of reduced Au ion on the pre-defined electrodes. Enhanced redox current of ferri/ferrocyanide was obtained by redox cycling between the two working electrodes. The faradaic current is amplified about a thousand times in this redox system. Since the signal amplification is due to the shortened diffusion length between the two electrodes, the narrower the nanogap was, the better detection limit, calibration sensitivity, and dynamic range. The experimental results were discussed on the basis of the cyclic voltammetry (CV), atomic force microscope (AFM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurements.
Digital halftoning is a process to produce a binary image so that the original image and its binary counterpart appear similar when observed from a distance. Among digital halftoning methods, error diffusion is a procedure for generating high quality bilevel images from continuous-tone images but blurs the edge information in the bilevel images. To solve this problem, we propose the improved error diffusion using local spatial information of the original images. Based on the fact that the human vision perceives not a pixel but local mean of input image, we compute edge enhancement information(EEI) by appling the ratio of a pixel and its adjacent pixels to local mean. The weights applied to local means is computed using the ratio of local activity measure(LAM) to the difference between input pixels of 3$\times$3 blocks and theirs mean. LAM is the measure of luminance changes in local regions and is obtained by adding the square of the difference between input pixels of 3$\times$3 blocks and theirs mean. We add the value to a input pixel of quantizer to enhance edge. The performance of the proposed method is compared with conventional methods by measuring the edge correlation. The halftone images by using the proposed method show better quality due to the enhanced edge. And the detailed edge is preserved in the halftone images by using the proposed method. Also the proposed method improves the quality of halftone images because unpleasant patterns for human visual system are reduced.

This study was conducted at seven degreasing processes in plating plants located in Seoul, Incheon, Ansan, and Taejeon areas from July 21 to august 27, 1992. This study was performed to assess the TWA exposures to trichloroethylene (TCE) and evaluate factors affecting TCE concentrations in degreasing process. Two-Point Eddy Diffusional Model suggested by Wadden et al. was employed to calculalte emission factors according to degreaser type. Results are summarized as follows. 1. The TWA exposures of the degreasing operators ranged from 1.4 ppm to 123 ppm, and those of three plants out of seven were exceeding 50 ppm of both the Korean and U.S. OSHA standards. Degreasing assistant of Plant B, was exposed to 59 ppm. 2. The average concentrations at the distance 0, 1.5, 3.0 m from the degreasers were 1.014, 24, and 18 ppm, respectively, and showed a signifficant difference by distance (p<0.01). 3. The emission of TCE was reduced by installing local exhaust systems, condensers, and refrigeration lines at the degreasers (p<0.01). 4. The major factors related to exposure of operators were workload (r=.9621. p<0.01) and dimensions of degreansing room(r=-.8667, p<0.05). 5. If the air in degreasing room is mixed violently by other factors in addition to diffusion, the emission factors can not be evaluated because the important hypothesis of the Two-Point Eddy Diffusional Model can not be accepted. 6. The ultrasonic degreaser without the local exhaust ststem, condenser, and refrigeration lines emitted TCE three times greater than the ultrasonic degreaser with condenser and refrigeration 1ines only.
To estimate the territorial size of Reticulitermes speratus, a species of subterranean termites that damages wooden structures in Korea, appropriate dye markers were selected and the diffusion tendency was analyzed. According to the results of the sensitivity assessment using sawdust diet, increase in dye concentration reduced the amount of feed consumption but the dyeing becomes more intense. Except for the Neutral Red 0.5% group, all other concentration groups, including the control group, showed a survival rate of > 85% until week 4. For both, Nile Blue A and Neutral Red dye markers, all concentration conditions > 0.2%, except for the 0.1% concentration, were maintained for 11 weeks, and no sign of transfer effect was found except when the termites were fed with the dye markers. Therefore, it appears that 0.2% of Nile Blue A and Neutral Red is the optimal concentration for monitoring the R. speratus colonies. Additionally, we prepared an indoor 40 m long foraging arena consisting of a colony of 25,000 termites and released individuals stained with 0.2% of Nile Blue A and Neutral Red at both ends to assess the diffusion trends over time. The results showed that it took approximately 7 days for each dyed individual to gradually cover the 40 m distance and mix with each other. These findings reveal that when mark-release-recapture monitoring is conducted on the R. speratus colonies damaging wooden structures, the extent of the colony's activity area could be measured and different colonies could be distinguished from each other.

In this study, the applicability of Hunt's analytical solution for a two-layered leaky aquifer system, which was developed to estimate stream depletion due to the groundwater pumping of the upper shallow aquifer, was evaluated. The 5-year averaged stream depletions were estimated using Hunt's analytical solution for various combinations of hydraulic characteristic values such as transmissivity, storage coefficient of the two aquifers, interlayer leakage coefficient, stream-well distance, hydraulic conductivity of the streambed, and stream width. Through comparison with the numerical solution accurately simulated with a MODFLOW groundwater flow model, the analytical solution derived by regarding the stream width as a point was evaluated. It was found that the error in the stream depletion calculated by the analytical solution can be reduced to less than 0.05 when the stream-well distance is greater than the stream width or when the stream depletion factor (SDF) is more than about 3,000 days. In addition, when the streambed hydraulic conductivity is less than 1 m/d, the hydraulic diffusion coefficient of the lower aquifer layer is less than 100 ㎡/d, the hydraulic diffusion coefficient ratio of the upper and lower aquifer layers is 5 or more, and the leakage coefficient between the layers is less than 0.0004 m/d, the overall analytical solutions were overestimated compared with the numerical solutions.

This study was aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of Penicillium purpurogenum ED76 on several clinically important microorganisms. The endophytic fungus P. purpurogenum ED76 was previously isolated from Swietenia macrophylla leaf. The antimicrobial efficacy of P. purpurogenum ED76 dichloromethane extract was determined via disc diffusion and broth microdilution assay. A kill curve study was conducted and the morphology of extract treated bacterial cells were viewed under scanning electron microscope. The dichloromethane extract showed significant inhibitory activity on 4 test bacteria and 2 test yeasts. The minimal inhibitory concentration of the extract ranged from 125 to $1,000{\mu}g/ml$, which indicates the different susceptibility levels of the test microorganisms to the fungal extract. The kill curve study has revealed a concentration-dependent inhibition for all test microorganisms. With the increase of the extract concentration, the microbial growth was significantly reduced. The scanning electron micrograph of dichloromethane extract-treated Staphylococcus aureus cells showed the total damage of the cells. The cell wall invagination of the bacterial cells also indicates the loss of cellular materials and metabolic activity. The gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis of the extract also showed that the major compound was stigmasterol, which constitutes 45.30% of the total area. The dichloromethane extract of P. purpurogenum ED76 exhibited significant inhibitory activity on several clinically important bacteria and yeasts. The study proposed a possible mode of action that the extract cause significant damage to the morphology of S. aureus cells.

To determine the clinical target volumes considering vascularity and cellularity of tumors, the software was developed for mapping of the analyzed biological clinical target volumes on anatomical images using regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV) maps and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps. The program provides the functions for integrated registrations using mutual information, affine transform and non-rigid registration. The registration accuracy is evaluated by the calculation of the overlapped ratio of segmented bone regions and average distance difference of contours between reference and registered images. The performance of the developed software was tested using multimodal images of a patient who has the residual tumor of high grade gliomas. Registration accuracy of about 74% and average 2.3 mm distance difference were calculated by the evaluation method of bone segmentation and contour extraction. The registration accuracy can be improved as higher as 4% by the manual adjustment functions. Advanced MR images are analyzed using color maps for rCBV maps and quantitative calculation based on region of interest (ROI) for ADC maps. Then, multi-parameters on the same voxels are plotted on plane and constitute the multi-functional parametric maps of which x and y axis representing rCBV and ADC values. According to the distributions of functional parameters, tumor regions showing the higher vascularity and cellularity are categorized according to the criteria corresponding malignant gliomas. Determined volumes reflecting pathological and physiological characteristics of tumors are marked on anatomical images. By applying the multi-functional images, errors arising from using one type of image would be reduced and local regions representing higher probability as tumor cells would be determined for radiation treatment plan. Biological tumor characteristics can be expressed using image registration and multi-functional parametric maps in the developed software. The software can be considered to delineate clinical target volumes using advanced MR images with anatomical images.
The establishment and operation of Region-based Teleworking Centers(RTC) in Korea is in the initial stage at the moment. Although some studies have been conducted on telecommuting at home, few studies have been performed on the effects of all-out expansion and diffusion of region-based Teleworking Centers. Therefore, this study analyzed the reduction effect of commuting distance which is possible to obtain from the establishment of Teleworking Centers, based on the network in the Seoul Metropolitan Area, Subsequently, quantitative reduction of the effects of $CO_2$ were calculated from region-based Teleworking Centers. The results of the analysis indicated that region-based Teleworking Centers could reduce a total of 911 tons of $CO_2$ per day. When applying these results to 258 working days per year (according to Statistics Korea), 235,056 tons of $CO_2$ can be reduced annually by the establishment of Teleworking Centers. With quantity on environmental utility to be obtained from the establishment of Teleworking Centers, this study can be utilized as a guideline for selecting effective locations of Teleworking Centers in the future. It can also be helpful in decisions to determine the priority of extending operations of Teleworking Centers through comparisons among administrative districts.
