Species Composition of Orius spp. (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) and Their Seasonal Occurrence on Several Plants in Korea (애꽃노린재류(Orius spp.)의 종류와 몇가지 식물에서 발생소장)

  • Field survey for Orius spp., predacious natural enemies of thrips pests, on several plants by beating or sweeping method revealed that O. sauteri, O. strigicollis, O. minutus, and O. nagaii habituated in open fields or in greenhouses of Korea. Among them, O. sauteri was the most dominant species at all areas (83.0~92.5%), followed by O. strigicollis and O. minutus. Especially, O. sauteri exclusively dominated on the economically important crops such as soybean, red pepper, and watermelon. On the other hand, O. strigicallis and O. nagaii occurred mainly on ornamental plants including chrysanthemum and rose and on rice, respectively, during summer-autumn season. The seasonal occurrence varied depending on the plant. Initial population of Orius spp. was first observed on white clover in late May, followed by on soybean, red pepper, an buck wheat in early June, indcating that movement of Orius spp. relates to the flowering time of the plant. Peak of Orius spp. abundance was found first in July and secondly in August or September. On white clover and buck wheat the first peak of abundance was one week earlier than on soybean and red pepper. Therefore, we suppose that wild plants such as white clover can serve as a reservoir for Orius spp. after overwintering.

Effects of Various Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria on the Early Growth of Red Pepper Seedlings, Capsicum annuum L. cv. Nockkwang (數種의 植物生長促進 根圈細菌이 '녹광' 고추 幼苗의 初期生長에 미치는 影響)

  • Various rhizobacteria was isolated, and was bacterialized into the substrates to clarify the plant growth promoting effects of rhizobacteria on the early growth of red peper seedlings. Total 125 bacterial isolates were primarily isolated and purified from the soils in greenhouse. And four strains were finally screened, based on the antifungal activities against Fusarium sp., Pythium sp. and Rhizoctonia sp. of red pepper plants. The strongest antifungal strain RB 109 has a antagonistic activity against Fusarium sp., Pythium sp. and Rhizoctonia sp. in terms of 66.0%, 65.0% and 66.1%. Early growth of red pepper seedlings was promoted, when cultured solution of rhizobacteria RB 109 was bacterialized into the substrates. Antifungal rhizobacteria RB 109 was identified as Pseudomonas sp. related strains, which has a similarity of 82% to the Pseudomonas sp.

  • The blue, green, and red colored polyethylene film was used as a covering material for house grown pepper production to compare with the white film. Plant height was the tallest in red PE house(78.8 cm) followed by white, blue, and green PE house. The leaf weight was 0.40g in white PE house and 0.39g in red PE house which was higher than the weight in blue and green PE house. Fruiting percentage was 48.0% and 46.1% in white and red PE house, respectively, however no fruit was set in blue and green PE house. The fruit weight was 3.32g and 2.81g, in red and white PE house, respectively. The K, Ca, Mg, and Fe content in the leaf was the lowest in plants grown in white PE house. The content of K, Ca, Mg, and Fe was the highest in plants grown in green PE house.

  • The present experiment was conducted to investigate causes affecting the reduction of red pepper production in the continuous cultivation upland soil from 1985 to 1986 in Imsil Chonbuk Province. The results obstained are summarized as follows: 1. Area ratio of continuous cultivation 2 years was 12.7%, 3 years 6.8% and over 4 years 48.9%. 2. Soil hardness and volume of solid and liguid of red pepper continuous cultivation soil were higher than those of one year cultivation, while pH and content of organic matter of continuous cultivation soil were low. The exceeding optimum level of phosphorus and potassium appeared factors affecting and reduction of red pepper of continuous cultivation soil. 3. Microflora density in continuous cultivation soil was high but bacteria/fungi (B/F) and actinomycetes/fungi (A/F) ratio were low. 4. The density of soil nematodes in continuous cultivation soil were higher than that in one year cultivation soil, however, the steeper and better drainage soil lowered the density of nematodes. 5. Continuous cultivation over 4 years showed 14.3% of plants diseased by phytophthora while 0.7% in one year cultivation soil.

Physiological, Biochemical and Genetic Characteristics of Ralstonia solanacearum Strains Isolated from Pepper Plants in Korea (고추에서 분리된 Ralstonia solanacearum 계통의 생리, 생화학 및 유전적 특성)

  • Totally sixty three bacteria were isolated from lower stems showing symptoms of bacterial wilt on pepper plants in 14 counties of 7 provinces, Korea. The isolates showed strong pathogenicity on red pepper (cv. Daewang) and tomato (cv. Seogwang) seedlings. All virulent bacteria were identified as Ralstonia solanacearum based on colony types, physiological and biochemical tests and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). All R. solanacearum isolates from peppers were race 1. The bacterial isolates consisted of biovar 3 (27%) and biovar 4 (73%). Based on polymorphic PCR bands generated by repetitive sequence (rep-PCR), the 63 R. solanacearum isolates were divided into 12 groups at 70% similarity level. These results will be used as basic materials for resistant breeding program and efficient control against bacterial wilt disease of pepper.

Antifungal Activity of Crude Extract Compound from Rhus verniciflua Against Anthracnose Fungi (Collectotrichum spp.) of Red-Pepper (고추 탄저병균에 대한 옻나무 추출물의 항진균 효과)

  • BACKGROUND: Anthracnose disease caused by Collectotrichum spp. is one of the most important worldwide devastating diseases in red pepper plants. Fungicides using plant extracts have several advantages, compared to synthetic chemical fungicides, because they are naturally occurring compounds, are usually safe for agricultural environment and are used for producing highly valuable agricultural products. Efforts for seeking an anti-fungal activities using naturally occurring compounds were mostly conducted from medicinal plant extracts. Sap of Rhus verniciflus was known to have healing effects on several human diseases. Recently, the extracts of Rhus verniciflus were actively tested for anti-cancer, anti-oxidative, and anti-fungal effects. In this study, the extract of Rhus verniciflus was tested for anti-fungal activity against Colletotrichum spp., which cause anthracnose in red-pepper. METHODS AND RESULTS: After neutralizing extracts of Rhus verniciflus (urushiol contents 70%) with autoclave, the crude extracts were used to investigate inhibitory effects for mycelial growth and spore germination of Colletotrichum spp. on PDA media. The mycelial growth and spore germination of Colletotrichum spp. were inhibited 18-39% and over 50% in response to crude extract of R. verniciflus (1.0 mg/mL). After spraying the extracts at the same concentrations above and then artificially inoculating Colletotrichum spp. on blue and red-pepper fruits, in vitro inhibition effects were examined. At 1.0 mg/mL, the crude extract of R. verniciflus showed inhibition activity in anthracnose incidence on blue- and red-pepper as 68.1-75.0%, through a artificial inoculation of Colletotrichum spp. in a laboratory. For in vivo inhibitory effects, the extracts (1.0, 0.1, and 0.01 mg/mL) were treated on red-pepper plants grown in green house 3 times at the interval of 1 week. Then inhibitory effects were determined by counting diseased fruits at 1 week after final treatment. The incidence of anthracnose was inhibited over 60% in the greenhouse by treatment of crude extract of R. verniciflus (1.0 mg/mL). CONCLUSION(s): Extracts of Rhus verniciflus were shown to have inhibitory effects on mycelial growth, spore germination of Colletotrichum spp. in vitro and on occurrence of anthracnose on pepper fruit in green house.

Effect of a Serial Irradiation of Low Dose Gamma Rays on the Growth and Photosynthesis of Red Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) Plants

  • To reveal the relationship between the changes in the growth and photo- synthesis induced by low dose radiation, red pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) plants were serially irradiated three times with gamma rays of 0.5, 1, 2, 3, and 4 Gy. The plant growth was monitored by the fresh weight, the stem length, and the leaf length & width. All the irradiation groups (0.5-4 Gy) were stimulated in growth at 1 day after the $1^{st}$ irradiation (DA1I), but rather inhibited at 3 days after the $3^{rd}$ irradiation (DA3I). The maximum photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm), the photochemical quenching (qP), the non-:photochemical quenching (NPQ) and the apparent rate of the photosynthetic electron transport (ETR) were used to represent the changes in the photosynthesis by the serial irradiation. The irradiation groups except 0.5 Gy had higher Fv/Fm values at 3 DA3I than the control one. After the 3$^{rd}$ irradiation, the qP values appeared to be a little lower in the 1-4 Gy groups than in the control and 0.5 Gy ones. In contrast, the NPQ values were rather higher in the irradiation groups except 0.5 Gy. During the whole experimental period, the ETRs decreased in the control group but remained relatively constant in the 4-Gy one. In conclusion, the results obtained indicate that the stimulatory effect of ionizing radiation on the plant growth was determined by the incident dose of the single irradiation rather than by the cumulative one of the serial irradiation. They also demonstrate that the growth stimulation induced by a low dose radiation could not be positively correlated with an alteration in the photosynthesis. Additionally, we discuss in text that an ionizing radiation may partly protect the leaf senescence by delaying the development of the plants.

Evaluation of Bacillus subtilis Native Strains for Plant Growth Promotion and Induced Systemic Resistance in Tomato and Red-pepper (토마토, 고추의 생육촉진 및 병 저항성 의 농업적 활용을 위한 토착 Bacillus subtilis의 생물활성 평가)

  • Bacillus subtilis strains isolated from different regions of Korea were screened for their plant growth promotion and induced systemic resistance (ISR) in tomato and red-pepper. The plant growth promotion on red-pepper and tomato revealed maximum plant height (22.73 cm) on red pepper treated with B. subtilis strain JE 21-1 and 30.18cm in case of tomato treated with B. subtilis strain JE 8-1. There was also significant improvement in root and shoot dry weight in both the plants. The strain JE 21-1 showed better promise for all growth parameters in red-pepper and tomato when compared to other strains and positive check BTH. Different strains screened in square plate method also revealed maximum plant height and leaf width, and suppressed anthracnose on red pepper in case of strain JE 21-1 at $10^6$ and $10^7$ cells/ml when compared to other strains. In all the bacterial inoculations the population was significantly high when compared to untreated check. In plant growth promotion with respect to fruit length and weight, fruit length was maximal in treating with JE 9-4 and ES 2-2, while fruit weight was maximal in treating with JE 3-6, ES4-2, ES2-2 and JE 21-2 on red pepper. In case of tomato, comparatively better fruit weight was in JE 21-1, ES 3-3 and JE 10-2 when compared to BTH and untreated control. The soft rot disease caused by Pectobacterium carotovorum SCCI was completely suppressed in case of transgenic tobacco harboring GUS gene related to PR1a and increased the level of salicylic acid significantly in combined application of JE 9-4 on par with BTH. Thus, this study clarified some potential Bacillus subtilis strains for plant growth promotion and ISR in red-pepper and tomato.

Effects of Temperature and Light Intensity on the Growth of Red Pepper(Capsicum annuum L.) in Plastic House During Winter. I.   • This study was conducted to analyze the effects of fluctuations in temperature, light intensity and soil temperature on the growth of red pepper seedlings in the nonheated plastic houses with various number of layers and in the open field. Relationship between the optimal environment and the growth of seedlings was discussed, and the maximum and minimum outdoor temperatures in Kwangju area from 1941 to 1985 were analyzed. The results obtained were as follows; 1. The minimum temperature in tunnel with quadruple coverings of P. E. film from December 20 to February 25 was decreased to 5$^{\circ}C$ mostly, where the exposure to chilling temperature could not be avoided during this period. The maximum temperature was increased to 33$^{\circ}C$ mostly and 42$^{\circ}C$ in peak, where some ventilation was needed. 2. The diurnal differences of inside temperature, increasing with number of layers, were 16 to 38$^{\circ}C$, while those of outside temperature were 5 to 1$0^{\circ}C$. 3. The cold injury in the quadruple coverings during winter occurred all the times below 12$^{\circ}C$ and as many as 200 times over 3$0^{\circ}C$, while effectiveness of thermal insulation in the multilayered nonheating plastic houses were clearly proved. 4. The inside light intensity was markedly reduced with the increment of layers and the minimum light intensity fallen down below the light compensation point for the growth of red pepper plants regardless of the number of layers. 5. Until 10 a. m., the temperature in the daytime during December 20 to mid - February showed below 10 to 12$^{\circ}C$ which was the limiting temperature for the growth of red pepper seedlings. After 4 p. m., the light intensity was sharply reduced despite of the air temperature kept over 12$^{\circ}C$. Therefore, limiting factors for the growth of red pepper seedlings were the temperature before 10 a. m. and the light intensity after 4 p. m. 6. The minimum soil temperature in quadruple coverings showed around 1$0^{\circ}C$ where the physiological damage for red pepper seedlings might be occurred. 7. The minimum outdoor temperatures from 1941 to 1985 was -19.4$^{\circ}C$, observed in the 5th January.

Variation of Iron Content and Ferritin Distribution during Development Stage under Conditions of Iron Nutritional Status from Hydroponic Culture in Red Pepper ( Capsicum annuum L. )

  • Total iron content and ferritin distribution have been determined in red pepper(Capsicum annuum L.) during development stage under conditions of iron nutritional status from hydroponic culture. Color of the leaves become chlorotic on iron deficient and high concentration. The plant height on each iron concentration had retarding effect at concentration lower than $25\muM$ and greater than 125$25\muM$. In normal green leaves. Total iron content was almost constant with a mean value of $2.5\mumole$ of iron/mg of dry matter, except at 63day, for which it increases slightly to $4\mumole$. Howere, iron content of chlorotic plants grew on iron free medium was not almost detectable. Also in post chlorotic leaves(++Fe), iron content was evidently increase unitl 7days after transfer on liquid medium, but decreased from after 14days. Also, ferritin protein analysed total protein extracts prepared from leaves of different ages using antibodies raised against ferritin protein. Ferritin protein deereased progressively during the first week of germination and was not detectable in vegetative tissues. Ferritin protein in post chlorotic leaves wasevidently strongly cnhanced until 11days after transfer on liquid medium but decreased until the leves became chlorotic.
