Antioxidant Activity According to Each Kind of Natural Plant Pigments (식물유래 천연색소의 항산화 활성)

  • The objective of this study was to determine the effect of antioxidant enzyme activity and radical scavenging activities of thirteen kinds of natural plant pigments. The analytic method of antioxidant activities were measured by estimating DPPH free radical scavenging and nitrite scavenging ability activity. The free radical scavenging activity by method using stable free radical DPPH was the highest in the red cabbaged pigment. Addition of ethanol extract 1mg/ml from onion peel pigment displayed remarkable effect on nitrite scavenging ability about 91.9%. Antioxidative enzyme activity was evaluated in terms of superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase(CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase(APX) activity. The bitter melon pigment had the highest SOD activity of 87.3%. The activities of CAT and APX were higher in the mulberry leave pigment compared with other natural plant pigments. In contrast, CAT activity of plant pigment samples were unaffected. These results suggest that natural plant pigment had the potent biological activities such as antioxidant enzyme activities, and that their activities exhibited differently depending on each kind of pigments.

  • The objectives of this study were to determine antioxidant activity of the methanolic extracts from some specialty rices and to investigate relationships between antioxidant activities and antioxidant contents in the extracts. ABTS (2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)) radical cation scavenging activity, inhibitory effect on lipid peroxidation, chelating activity, reducing power and inhibitory effect on xanthine oxidase have been used to investigate the relative antioxidant activity of the extracts from specialty rices. The concentrations of total polyphenolics, phytic acid, and anthocyanin in the extracts were measured by spectrophotometric methods and vitamin E analysis was carried out by HPLC. The methanolic extracts prepared from black and red rices showed higher antioxidant activities and contained higher antioxidant compounds compared with other rices, apparently due to their intense red-purple color. The correlation coefficient between total polyphenolic content of methanolic extracts and ABTS radical cation scavenging activity, reducing power, and inhibitory effect of xanthine oxidase were 0.9921, 0.9856, and 0.8032, respectively.

Effects of Organic Liquid Fertilizer on Growth and Fruit Quality of Hot Pepper (유기액비 시용량이 고추의 생육 및 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of applying levels of organic liquid fertilizer (OLF) on growth and fruit quality of hot pepper. The OLF was made with compositions of chicken dung : rice bran : soybean meal (2:1:1). Hot pepper was applied with 5 treatments; control (chemical fertilize), OLF-1.0X (standard applying levels), OLF-0.7X (70% of standard applying level), and OLF-1.3X (130% of standard applying level). The plant height was reduced at 23cm in the OLF-1.0X treatment compared to control of 293cm. The number of hot pepper fruits was significantly increased. The content of capsaicin in the ripened pepper decreased by 23.6% in the OLF-1.0X treatment with $253mg{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ compared with control of $331mg{\cdot}kg^{-1}$, but the content of free sugar increased by 19.5%. The content of capsaicin and soluble solid content in OLF-1.3X treatment were significant different with other treatments. The yield of red pepper in OLF-1.0X treatments increased by 15% with $4,190kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$ compared to control of $3,643kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$, and OLF-1.3X and OLF-0.7X treatments showed increase by 10% and 6%, respectively.

Effects of Mulching Practices on Soil Temperature and Soil Physical Properties (Mulching방법별(方法別) 토양온도(土壤溫度)와 토양물리성(土壤物理性) 변화(變化))

  • Soil temperatures and soil physical properties were investigated in order to better understand the effects of mulchings in the red pepper field. The red pepper was planted in the lysimeter installed at the Yesan sandy loam with 20% slope and 10cm slope length. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Average soil temperatures at 10cm and 20cm depth in vinyl mulching plots were $1.6^{\circ}C$ and $1.1^{\circ}C$ higher than those of control, respectively. However, the average soil temperatures in rice straw mulching plots were relatively lower than those of control during the growing season. 2. The greatest diurnal fluctuation of soil temperature was found at the vinyl mulching plots and it was decreased with increasing soil depth. 3. The calculated thermal diffusivities were 0.011, 0.009 and $0.007cm^2/sec$ for the vinyl mulching, control and straw mulching, respectively. 4. Soil losses were 103kg/10a for the vinyl mulching and 36kg/10a for the straw mulching which were nearly negligible as compared to the control. 5. Soil physical properties such as bulk density, hardness and water content were significantly improved by the vinyl and straw mulchings.

Scientific Analysis and Conservation Treatment of the Wooden Gamsil with Inscription of "Botajeon" in the Collection of the Dongguk University Museum (동국대박물관 소장 보타전명 목조감실 과학적 분석 및 보존처리)

  • The Wooden Gamsil with Inscription of "Botajeon" in the collection of the Dongguk University Museum was made in imitation of the wooden architecture style of the late Joseon period. The Gamsil had suffered exfoliation in the pigment and loss of components and thus underwent conservation treatment. Prior to the conservation treatment, the damage was classified by type and form, scientific analysis was carried out on the fiber and the species of wood, and portable X-ray fluorescence (P-XRF) analysis was conducted for the pigment component analysis. According to the analyses, Korea Pine(Soft pine) was used for most parts of the Gamsil, Manchurian walnut (Jugalns spp.) was used for the signboard, and the fiber used was identified as rice straw (Oryza sativa). The P-XRF identified white lead and zinc oxide in the white pigment, red lead in the red pigment, ultramarine blue in the blue pigment, and emerald green in the green pigment. For the conservation treatment, contaminants attached to the gamsil were removed by both dry and wet cleaning, detached parts were reattached in their original places, and lost parts were restored.

Studies on the Effect of Temperature During the Reduction Division and the Grain Filling Stage in Rice Plants II. Effect of Air Temperature at the Grain Filling Stage in Indica-Japonica Crosses (수도의 감수분열기 및 등숙기에 있어서 온도반응에 관한 연구 제2보 수도 Indica$\times$Japonica 품종의 등숙기에 있어서의 온도반응)

  • The effects of air temperature on the grain filling stage of indica-japonica crosses were studied in artificial temperature-controlled cabinets, using Indica-Japonica crosses (Suweon 264, Suweon 258 and Milyang 29), Indica IR 36 and Lengkwang) and a Japonica rice (Jinheung). The optimum temperature to achieve maximum grain weight during the grain-filling stage was $26/18^{\circ}C$ for all varieties. Within the temperature range of 13 to $28^{\circ}C$, the grain filling period was shorter as the temperature was increased. At the highest temperature $(32/24^{\circ}C)$ the upper-position grains ("special spikelets") of IR 36 required 13days after flowering to reach the maximum weight, in Jinheung 23 days, in indica-japonica varieties (Suweon 264, Suweon 258, and MiIyang 29) 18 days, and in Lengkwang, 23 days. In the case of Lengkwang, at $32/24, \;29/21^{\circ}C$ and $26/18^{\circ}C$temperature range the upper-position grain also required same 23 days after flowering to reach the maximum weight. At the lowest temperature range of $17/9^{\circ}C$, Jinheung required 68 days and Lengkwang 53 days after flowering to reach maximum grain weight. The whole panicle took 10 to 15 days later than the special spikelets to reach the maximum weight. At lower-than-optimum temperature range $(l7/9^{\circ}C\;and\;20/12^{\circ}C)$, all IR 36 plant died within 15 days after flowering. In the case of indica-japonica varieties all plants died within 15 days only at $17/9^{\circ}C$. There were more chalky grains when the temperature was higher and lower than optimum. The highest and lowest temperature range produced dead rice (black and dark red rice). Lower than optimum temperature ranges $(17/9^{\circ}C\;and\;20/12^{\circ}C)$ affected grain quality (length, width and depth) at these temperature ranges, grains were shorter, narrower, and thinner than grains at the optimum temperature of $26/18^{\circ}C$. With regared and the effects of temperature on frequency of grain weight at grain filling stage of indica variety IR 36, the highest $(32/24^{\circ}C)$ and lowest $(23/15^{\circ}C)$ temperature ranges matched the frequency of grain weight curves. In Japonica variety Jinheung, at the three temperature ranges, that is, lowest $(17/9^{\circ}C)$ highest $(32/24^{\circ}C)$ and optimum $(26/18^{\circ}C)$, the frequency of grain weight curve showed very different patterns, In the case of indica-japonica variety Suweon 258, the frequency of grain weight curve was midway between that of IR 36 and Jinheung. Characteristics of the Body Shape of Korean Woman Farmers by Crops (주 재배 작목별 한국 여성 농업인 체형 특성)

  • This study was to research the characteristics of the body shape of Korean woman farmers by the major crops. Four hundred ninety-five Korean woman farmers from 9 different area such as Kumi, Damyang, Iksan, Injae, Chungju, Choongju, Haman, Whasung, and Whasoon volunteered for this study. Their major crops were the rice, the pepper, the water melon, the strawberry, the wild rocambole, the sweet persimmon, the grapes, the mushroom, and the chrysanthemums. Twelve body angles were measured from archived the somatotype photographs of the front, the side, and the back. Questionnaires of SF-36 and the farmer's symptom, and the farm-work related movements were surveyed. The results were as follows; 1. Farmers had lower health levels in physical role limit, pain, vitality, and physical function than other occupational workers. 2. Most farmers acted the high-risk ergonomics motions when they worked in the farm. 3. There were significantly different on the both shoulder angles, the hip tangential line slope, the hip breadth angel, in frontal ankle-knee angle, the bending back angle, the dropping breast slope, the abdominis media angle, under the abdominis media angle, the glutea angle, under the glutea angle, and the sideward knee angle(p<.05). 4. Farmers cultivating the low plants such as the water melon, the strawberry, and the wild rocambole showed more banded vertebralis and side knee angles. Farmers cultivating the red pepper showed the dropping the left shoulder and O shape legs. Farmers cultivating the fruit trees such as the sweet persimmon and the grapes showed the less banded side knee angles than other farmer groups. 5. On comparing the same age, farmers showed the older's body shape in earlier and much more than the old living in the city.

A Research on Porridge that King Yeongjo Had Been Served - Based on The Daily Record of Royal Secretariat of Joseon Dynasty during King Yeongjo period - (영조가 복용한 죽(粥)에 대한 고찰 - 『승정원일기(承政院日記)』의 영조 기록을 중심으로 -)

  • Objectives : Many curative methods are used utilized in order to rid human body of disease when people become sick. Traditional Korean medicine generally prescribe methods that involve acupunture, moxibustion, or herb formulae. However, different types of foods are sometimes used as well. While wondering the history and efficacy of Qi-elevation foods that were consumed by Koreans in the past, the author discovered that a record from the Joseon Dynasty, called The Daily Record of Royal Secretariat of Joseon Dynasty, henceforth the Records, contained information about different types of porridge. Hence, the author looked through the records of porridge as written in the historical material in an attempt to learn the examples and efficacy of medicine-porridge consumed in Joseon's royal palace. Methods : After searching for the keyword, 'porridge', in the Records as provided by the National Institute of Korean History, the author extracted the porridges recorded during the Yeongjo period that each has its own special name. Results : Different types of porridge were recorded in the Records as following: arrowroot porridge, bean-leaf porridge, mung bean porridge, bean porridge, malt-rice porridge, oriental arborvitae seed porridge, crucian porridge, lotus seed porridge, adlay porridge, red bean porridge, welsh onion porridge, milk porridge, seashell porridge, ginko nut porridge, black sesame porridge, and mandarin porridge. Each porridge was used for the purpose of alleviating any disease that afflicted the king Yeongjo or his royal family members in relation with the ingredient herb's medicinal function. Conclusions : These porridges consumed by the king Yeongjo and his royal family members were used not only with a purpose of aiding their body's recovery from disease, but with the goal to actively curing them of ailments.

A Study for the Purchase Status of the Imported Agricultural Products and Consumers' Recognition of the Labelling for the Country of Origin in Youngnam Region (수입 농산몰의 구입실태 및 원산지표시제의 인식도에 관한 연구 -영남지역 소비자를 중심으로-)

  • The consumers' purchase experiences of some imported agricultural products (rice, sesame, garlic, onion, jujube, red pepper, oak mushroom, apple, dried persimmon) and their consciousness for the labelling of the country of origin for agricultural products in Youngnam region were examined in this study. The sample consisted of 438 women who lived in Taegu, Pusan and other cities of Kyungpook and Kyungnam, and the self-administered questionnaire for the survey was used. The main reasons to purchase the imported agricultural products were the wide distribution and low price of them. Most of the consumers were concerned about safety of the imported agricultural products but only a few people experienced unsatisfaction of the products. The price, quality, package, container, label, and safety of the examined products were evaluated worse than those of the domestic products. Generally, although they suffered unsatisfaction, the consumers did not complain because they wanted to avoid troublesome work, which means the consumers did not assert their rights. Some people did not know the labelling system for the country of origin and the place to charge the market violating it. Therefore, it will be necessary for the consumers to receive education about the labelling system for the country of origin and the compensation criteria for consumers' grievances and damages. The current labelling method for the country of origin generally met the consumers' preference but the consumers wanted to improve the position and color of the label. Most consumers could not differentiate the imported products from the domestic products. The results obtained from the survey suggest consumer education for the labelling system for the country of origin and the compensation criteria should be activated through various ways such as mass media and consumer organizations.

Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) Production Using Waste Vegetable Oil by Pseudomonas sp. Strain DR2

  • To produce polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) from inexpensive substrates by bacteria, vegetable-oil-degrading bacteria were isolated from a rice field using enrichment cultivation. The isolated Pseudomonas sp. strain DR2 showed clear orange or red spots of accumulated PHA granules when grown on phosphate and nitrogen limited medium containing vegetable oil as the sole carbon source and stained with Nile blue A. Up to 37.34% (w/w) of intracellular PHA was produced from corn oil, which consisted of three major 3-hydroxyalkanoates; octanoic (C8:0, 37.75% of the total 3-hydroxyalkanoate content of PHA), decanoic (C10:0, 36.74%), and dodecanoic (C12:0, 11.36%). Pseudomonas sp. strain DR2 accumulated up to 23.52% (w/w) of $PHA_{MCL}$ from waste vegetable oil. The proportion of 3-hydroxyalkanoate of the waste vegetable-oil-derived PHA [hexanoic (5.86%), octanoic (45.67%), decanoic (34.88%), tetradecanoic (8.35%), and hexadecanoic (5.24%)] showed a composition ratio different from that of the corn-oil-derived PHA. Strain DR2 used three major fatty acids in the same ratio, and linoleic acid was the major source of PHA production. Interestingly, the production of PHA in Pseudomonas sp. strain DR2 could not occur in either acetate- or butyrate-amended media. Pseudomonas sp. strain DR2 accumulated a greater amount of PHA than other well-studied strains (Chromobacterium violaceum and Ralstonia eutropha H16) when grown on vegetable oil. The data showed that Pseudomonas sp. strain DR2 was capable of producing PHA from waste vegetable oil.
