Periodically, harmful algal blooms (HABs) have occurred, with impacts on various areas including public health, tourism, and aquatic ecosystems, especially aquacultured and caged fisheries. To prevent or manage invasions of HABs into fish farms on an emergency basis, many methods have been proposed. Frequently over the past 30 years in coastal countries, treatments of clay and clay mixed with polyaluminum chloride (PAC) and chitosan have been tested for HAB-removal effectiveness in both the laboratory and the field. In Korea, yellow loess clay (hwangto) has been dispersed using electrolytic clay dispensers, both to decrease the amount of yellow loess clay's usage in containers and enhance HAB-removal efficiency. However, this emergency method has limitations, among which is the requirement for more effective controlling agents for field applications. Thus, in this paper, we review technologies for clay-based red tides prevention and control and their limitations, and, further, introduce next-generation algicidal technologies for the emergency protection of fish farms.
To know the effects of the red tide and toxic dinoflagellates on survival and growth of larvae of the mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, laboratory experiments were conducted by incubating larvae with either unialgal culture of 4 dinoflagellate species (Amphidinium carterae, Prorocentrum triestinum, Gymnodinium impudicum, or Akashiwo sanguinea) or a standard food (Isochrysis galbana) for 10 days. The survival of larvae was higher than 80% when the food was A. carterae, G. impudicum, or A. sanguinea. The lowest survival (20%) was found when the food was P. triestinum. When the food was P. triestinum, the survival of larvae rapidly decreased from 87% at day 4 down to ca. 50% at day 6, and 20% at day 10. This implies that the larval population of M. galloprovincialis can seriously be affected if they are exposed to the red tide water dominated by P. triestinum for more than 4 days. Shell length of larvae either increased or decreased according to the food species. When the food was A. carterae, G. impudicum, or A. sanguinea, shell length of larvae increased. But, it decreased when the food was P. triestinum. Though shell length increased in 3 treatments, the daily increments (0.63 $\mu$ m for A. carterae, 0.46 m for $\mu$ G. impudicum, and 1.10 m for $\mu$ A. sanguinea) were smaller than that of the standard food (3.79 m for $\mu$ I. galbana). Correlation analyses chowed that the change in shell length was not significant when the food was A. carterae or G. impudicum. Therefore, all of 4 dinoflagellates affected the growth of M. galloprovincialis larvae: growth was negative for P. triestinum, nil for A. carterae and G. impudicum, and positive but lower than standard food for A. sanguinea. These imply that the dinoflagellates are less valuable as foods for M. galloprovincialis larvae. So, decreased growth rate of larvae is expected during red tides, which will consequently cause delayed metamorphosis or failure to recruitment to the adult populations. In considering the harmful effects of red tides on the aquatic ecosystem, not only the effects on adult populations of fish and shellfish, but also the effects on larval populations should be included.

There was a close relationship between spatio-temporal distribution of Cochlodinium polykrikoides red tide and meso-scale variation of oceanographic environment around the Korean waters. Oceanographic conditions of Narodo island, where red tide usually first occurred during summer seasons were formation of the thermohaline frontal zone from 1995 to 2001. Huge C. polykrikoides red tides were observed in every uneven year during the past 7 years (1995~2001) and quasi-biennial oscillation also occurred in the oceanographic variations of sea surface temperature and salinity in the northern part of the East China Sea during the same years. The distribution area and moving pattern of C. polykrikoides red tides were definitely depended on the temporal and spatial variation of upwelling cold water originated form the southeastern coast of the Korean peninsula in summer season.

Red tide is a natural phenomenon to bloom harmful algal, which fish and shellfish die en masse. Red tide damage with respect to sea farming has been occurred each year. Red tide damage can be minimized by means of prediction of red tide blooms. Red tide prediction using naive bayes classifier can be achieve good prediction results. The result of naive bayes method only determine red tide blooms, whereas the method can not know how increasing of red tide algae density. In this paper, we proposed the red tide blooms prediction method using fuzzy reasoning and naive bayes classifier. The proposed method can enhance the precision of red tide prediction and forecast the increasing density of red tide algae.

This paper describes the development of moving watched chamber. For the most part, the watched chamber have been located in the inner-bay. But, there are many problems of sea-water pollution. Therefore, the watched chamber must be relocated to undeveloped coastal area. The watched chamber which is located in the bay has a bit of damage by bad weather. But, the moving watched chamber would be exposed to bad water. It is desirable to improve the system of chamber. If we make a good design of the moving watched chamber with studying of waves and hydrodynamics, it would be possible to culture fish at the coastal sea area. When a fixed system is changed into a movable one, we can obtain the following advantages: 1. The possibility of diminishing the sea water pollution, easying the overcrowded state in a inner-bay farm, and relieved of limitation caused by bad conditions such as waves, red tides and terrains. 2. It would be easy not only to move the watched chamber system in accordance with weather conditions or occurrence of red tides, but also to select good sites for watched chamber fishes. 3. Transportation and good supervision with the automated design system can results with the effectiveness which increases the amount of aquatic products.
Ground seawater quality was investigated, and the algal growth potential (AGP) tests were performed along the Tongyeong coast to examine the inflow of materials, which is needed for the red tide species Cochlodinium polykrikoides to grow. The study was conducted to determine the mechanism for C. polykrikoidesred tides. Water temperature, salinity, pH, and dissolved oxygen (DO) ranged from 16.05 to $20.74^{\circ}C$, 18.20 to 32.11 psu, 6.00 to 7.61, and 3.41 to 7.91 mg/L (41.4-96.1%), respectively. No seasonal variation was observed in water temperature. The salinity, pH, and DO saturations at most stations were lower than those of coastal seawater at Tongyeong. The ${NH_4}^+$-N, ${NO_{2+3}}^-$-N, ${PO_4}^{3-}$-P concentrations ranged from 0.43 to 16.00 ${\mu}M$, 1.50 to 132.38 ${\mu}M$, and 1.30 to 6.29 ${\mu}M$, respectively; the values at some stations were much higher than observed in Tongyeong coast seawater. Using seawater from station B, C. polykrikoides grew consistently, with a high growth rate, similar to the red tide in nature. This seawater appeared to contain materials needed by C. polykrikoides to grow. Therefore, C. polykrikoides red tides seem to occur wherever the ground sea water contains materials that are needed for its growth.
We carried out a study on thermohaline structure and phytoplankton com munity in the East China Sea during early summer in 2005. As a result of marine environment and phytoplankton community, three characteristics of water type were identified. The former was characterized by the dominant species with diatoms, Chaetoceros lacinious, Ch. decipiens, Guninardia flaccida, Paralia sulcata, Pseudonitzschia pungens and Pseudosolenia calcar-avis in Chinese coastal waters, the secondary was done by lower water temperature, salinity and the dominant species with dinoflagellates, Prorocentrum donghaiense and Ceratium fusus, in over-all areas and the latter was done by the dominant species with coastal species of diatoms, Skeletonema costafum and Nitzschia longissima and silicoflagellate, Dictyocha speculum var. octopers in the transfer areas of Chinese continental coastal waters. Phytoplankton community in the surface layer identified a total of 66 species belonging to 36 genera. Dominant species was Prorocentrum donghaiense, Chaetoceros lacinious, Skeletonema costatum. Standing crops of phytoplankton in the surface layer flue tuated between $1.5 \times 10^4$cells $L^{-1}$ and $3.5\times 10^{5}$ cells $L^{-1}$. And the highest value appeared in the Changjiang estuaries with high dominance by diatoms and lowest one occurred in the southwestern area of Jeju Island with high dominance by dinoflagellates. Red tides with dinoflagellate, Prororcentrum donghaiense appeared in the frontal areas with mazimum cell density, $3.4\times 10^5$ cells $L^{-1}$. And outbreak environments was low water temperature under $20^{\circ}C$, and low salinity under 31.55 psu. The vertical distribution of red tide organisms went to about 30m depth from surface.
In early August 1978, a huge red tide occurred off Chilcheon Is, , at the mouth of Jinhae Bay. It expanded rapidly into the central part and then soon covered all the bay except the innermost part of the bay. After staying for a week it disappeared, and thereafter several small scale red tides partially occurred and disappeared untill the end of August. It differed from the red tides hitherto recorded from this bay in respect of the dominant plankter, the geographical extent and the severe damaging effect to local oyster resources. During the red tide period, nevertheless, no oyster damage was found. In September, however, oyster mortailty was found from all rafts and longlines in the bay. Except the inner most part of the bay the oyster farms were completely destroyed. Of the oyster Production in the winter 1978, $96\%$ of an estimated yield of 5,879 tons (shucked meat) was lost and it was estimated to be 2,275 million won, equivalent to $US\$$ 4.55 million. The dominant species was a dinoflagellate, Ceratium fusus and it constituted about $45\%$ of the total phytoplankton. Cell count showed $7.0\times10^4\;cells/\iota$ and chlorophyll-a, $50mg/m^3$ during red tide peak. No oxygen was found ill the bottom waters in September. Sulphides in bottom waters and in the superficial mud increased to 15 and 8-fold respectively in September compared with July ana August. Precipitation from January to May of 1978 was about a third in comparison with the past ten years average but rainfall ill June was two and half-fold more than normal year, and thereafter drought persisited till September Air and water temperatures were also higher, and sunny days continued for a long time without strong winds. Therefore, water was calm for a long time after the red tide extinguished. The result indicated that the occurrence of the Ceratium red tide occurred in that year which was characterized by the combination of the formation of almost anoxic bottom water before the red tide occurrence, high air temperature and the calmness after a great quantity of rainfall in June. The mass mortality of oysters was presumed not to be directly related with the red tide but with the depression of dissolved oxygen in the environmental waters at the bottom due to settling of the red tide organisms.
Various methods to detect the phytoplankton/red tide blooms in the oceanic waters have been developed and tested on satellite ocean color imagery since the last two and half decades, but accurate detection of blooms with these methods remains challenging in optically complex turbid waters, mainly because of the eventual interference of absorbing and scattering properties of dissolved organic and particulate inorganic matters with these methods. The present study introduces a new method called Red tide Index (Rl), providing indices which behave as a good measure of detecting red tide algal blooms in high scattering and absorbing waters of the Korean South Sea and Yellow Sea. The effectiveness of this method in identifying and locating red tides is compared with the standard Ocean Chlorophyll 4 (OC4) bio-optical algorithm applied to SeaWiFS ocean imagery, acquired during two bloom episodes on 27 March 2002 and 28 September 2003. The result revealed that OC4 bio-optical algorithm falsely identifies red tide blooms in areas abundance in colored dissolved organic and particulate inorganic matter constituents associated with coastal areas, estuaries and river mouths, whereas red tide index provides improved capability of detecting, predicting and monitoring of these blooms in both clear and turbid waters.

The marine bacterial flora of seawater at Masan Bay located in southern part of Korea was investigated to provide basic information about the origin of red tides in this area. The samples were collected at 5 sampling stations (see fig.1) established once a month from July 1985 to June 1986. The results are summerized as follows: 1. Two hundred and ninety one strains of marine bacteria among 299 strains isolated were identified from 156 samples(150 seawater samples and 6 mud samples) collected in the study area. 2. During the study period, the dissolved oxygen ranged from 2.1 to 6.3 ml/l; temperature of surface seawater ranged from 4.6 to $30.1^{\circ}C$; phosphate, silicate and nitrite ranged from 1.6 to 5.6 ${mu}g-at/l$, 327.27 to 3798.38 ${mu}g-at/l$, and 1.09 to 5.5 ${mu}g-at/l$, respectively. 3. Pseudomonas spp. were the most dominant bacterial species before red tides, Ancinetobacter spp. and Flavobacterium spp. during red tides, and Flavobacterium spp., Vibrio spp. and Acinetobacter spp. after red tides. 4. Viable counts marine bacterial flora ranged $10^4{\sim}10^8cell/ml$, and the most abundant viable counts of marine bacteria occured during red tides ($10^7{\sim}10^8cell/ml$).
