  • Korea has experienced 10 a Cochlodinium polykrikoides red tide outbreaks during the last 10 years (1993-2002). The monitoring activities at National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) in Korea have been extended to all the coastal waters after the worst of fish killing by C. polykrikoides blooms in 1995. NFRDI is looking forward to finding out the feasibility of red tide detection around Korean waters using satellite remote sensing of NOAA/AVHRR, Orbview-2/SeaWiFS, IRS-P4/OCM and Terra/MODIS on real time base. In this study, we used several alternative methods including climatological analysis, spectral and optical methods which may offer a potential detection of the major species of red tide in Korean waters. The relationship between the distribution of SST and C. polykrikoides bloom areas was studied. In climatological analysis, NOAA, SeaWiFS, OCM satellite data in 20th and 26th August 2001 were chosen using the known C. polykrikoides red tide bloom area mapped by helicopter reconnaissance and ground observation. The 26th August, 2001 SeaWiFS chlorophyll a anomaly imageries against the imageries of non-occurring red tide for August 20, 2001 showed the areas C. polykrikoides occurred. The anomalies of chlorophyll a concentration from satellite data between before and after red tide outbreaks showed the similar distribution of C. polykrikoides red tide in 26th August, 2001. The distribution of the difference in SST between daytime and nighttime also showed the possibility of red tide detection. We used corrected vegetation index (CVI) to detect floating vegetation and submerged vegetation containing algal blooms. The simple result of optical absorption from C. polykrikoides showed that if we use the optical characteristics of each red tide we will be able to get the feasibility of the red tide detection.

  • In this paper, we evaluate a red tide detection possibility of GOCI(Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) which will be launched in 2008. To detect red tide, we use a similar wavelength range of MODIS normalized water-leaving radiance data instead of GOCI data. Supposed to GOCI, red tide detection algorithm is based on MRI(MODIS Red tide Index) and use 667nm band to filter turbid water. The algorithm's effectiveness is verified by detecting large Cochlodinium polykrikoides red tide event that was appeared in Korean coastal waters. The evaluation was done by comparing the result with the update data provided by the NFRDI.

  • The satellite-based red tide detection algorithms have been developed for specific occurrence waters and red tide species. However, it is essential to study the whole occurrence waters and various red tide species for quick and accurate surveillance of red tide around the Korean coastal waters. In thisstudy, the comprehensive analysesinvolve the spectral features of red tide areas and the suitability of the satellite-based red tide detection algorithms used with GOCI in the Korean coastal waters. As a result, the spectral characteristics were changed according to the chlorophyll content of red tide species and the turbidity of the waters where the red tide appeared. In addition, the previous red tide detection algorithm is applied to GOCI, and it is found that there is a limitation to the red tide area extraction as the existing threshold value. To overcome these limitations, red tide species were divided into two groups according to the difference of chlorophyll content and a system for red tide surveillance wassuggested. It is possible to distinguish between red tide and non-red tide area through five steps. As a result of applying to GOCI, the red tide was appropriately extracted from the previous algorithm based on red tide breaking news. If such a red tide surveillance system is used, it will be possible to efficiently monitor red tide by quick and accurate surveillance of the whole occurrence waters around the Korean and various red tide species.

  • Various methods to detect the phytoplankton/red tide blooms in the oceanic waters have been developed and tested on satellite ocean color imagery since the last two and half decades, but accurate detection of blooms with these methods remains challenging in optically complex turbid waters, mainly because of the eventual interference of absorbing and scattering properties of dissolved organic and particulate inorganic matters with these methods. The present study introduces a new method called Red tide Index (Rl), providing indices which behave as a good measure of detecting red tide algal blooms in high scattering and absorbing waters of the Korean South Sea and Yellow Sea. The effectiveness of this method in identifying and locating red tides is compared with the standard Ocean Chlorophyll 4 (OC4) bio-optical algorithm applied to SeaWiFS ocean imagery, acquired during two bloom episodes on 27 March 2002 and 28 September 2003. The result revealed that OC4 bio-optical algorithm falsely identifies red tide blooms in areas abundance in colored dissolved organic and particulate inorganic matter constituents associated with coastal areas, estuaries and river mouths, whereas red tide index provides improved capability of detecting, predicting and monitoring of these blooms in both clear and turbid waters.

  • In order to efficiently monitor red tide over a wide range, the need for red tide detection using remote sensing is increasing. However, the previous studies focus on the development of red tide detection algorithm for ocean colour sensor. In this study, we propose the use of multi-sensor to improve the inaccuracy for red tide detection and remote sensing data in coastal areas with high turbidity, which are pointed out as limitations of satellite-based red tide monitoring. The study area were selected based on the red tide information provided by National Institute of Fisheries Science, and spatial fusion and spectral-based fusion were attempted using GOCI image as ocean colour sensor and Landsat OLI image as terrestrial sensor. Through spatial fusion of the two images, both the red tide of the coastal area and the outer sea areas, where the quality of Landsat OLI image was low, which were impossible to observe in GOCI images, showed improved detection results. As a result of spectral-based fusion performed by feature-level and rawdata-level, there was no significant difference in red tide distribution patterns derived from the two methods. However, in the feature-level method, the red tide area tends to overestimated as spatial resolution of the image low. As a result of pixel segmentation by linear spectral unmixing method, the difference in the red tide area was found to increase as the number of pixels with low red tide ratio increased. For rawdata-level, Gram-Schmidt sharpening method estimated a somewhat larger area than PC spectral sharpening method, but no significant difference was observed. In this study, it is shown that coastal red tide with high turbidity as well as outer sea areas can be detected through spatial fusion of ocean colour and terrestrial sensor. Also, by presenting various spectral-based fusion methods, more accurate red tide area estimation method is suggested. It is expected that this result will provide more precise detection of red tide around the Korean peninsula and accurate red tide area information needed to determine countermeasure to effectively control red tide.

  • We propose an algorithm to detect large Cochlodinium polykrikoides red tide event that was appeared in Korean coastal waters. This algorithm is based on two-stage filtering using MODIS chlorophyll information. Most of the red tide detection studies generally use assumption that sea water having high chlorophyll concentration is red tide events because of high correlation and red tide. However, these methods generate many commission errors such as turbid water by detecting inactive sea water of red tide. Therefore, we eliminated commission errors by applying two stage filtering and verified the algorithm's effectiveness by detecting large Cochlodinium polykrikoides red tide event that was appeared in Korean coastal waters.

  • Detection of red tides by satellite remote sensing can be done either by detecting enhanced level of chlorophyll pigment or by detecting changes in the spectral composition of pixels. Using chlorophyll concentration, however, is not effective currently due to the facts: 1) Chlorophyll-a is a universal pigment of phytoplankton, and 2) no accurate algorithm for chlorophyll in case 2 water is available yet. Here, red band algorithm, classification and PCA (Principal Component Analysis) techniques were applied for detecting patches of Cochlodinium polykrikoides red tides which occurred in Korean waters in 1995. This dinoflagellate species appears dark red due to the characteristic pigments absorbing lights in the blue and green wavelength most effectively. In the satellite image, the brightness of red tide pixels in all the three visible bands were low making the detection difficult. Red band algorithm is not good for detecting the red tide because of reflectance of suspended sediments. For supervised classification, selecting training area was difficult, while unsupervised classification was not effective in delineating the patches from surrounding pixels. On the other hand, PCA gave a good qualitative discrimination on the distribution compared with actual observation.

  • We make image that accumulate two principal component after change picture to use GLCM(Gray Level Co-Occurrence Matrix)'s texture feature information. And then these images use preprocess to achieved corner detection and area detection. Experiment results, two principle component conversion accumulation images had most informations about six kind textures by Eigen value 94.6%. When compared with red tide area that uses sea color and red tide area of image that have all principle component, displayed the most superior result. Also, we creates Euclidian space using Euclidian distance measurement about red tide area and clear sea. We identify of red tide area by red tide area and clear sea about random sea area through Euclidian distance and spatial distribution.

  • Red tide, defined as the major reproduction of harmful birds, has the characteristics of being generated and diffused in a wide area. This has limitations in detection only with the existing investigation method. Therefore, in this study, red tide was detected using a remote sensing technique. In addition, it was intended to increase the accuracy of detection by using optical characteristics, not just the concentration of chlorophyll. Red tide mainly occurs on the southern coast where sea signals are complex, and the main red tide control species on the southern coast is Cochlodinium polykirkoides. Therefore, it was intended to secure objectivity by reflecting features that could not be found depending on the researcher's observation and experience, not limited to visual judgment using machine learning techniques. In this study, support background machines and random forest were used among machine learning models, and as a result of calculating accuracy as performance evaluation indicators of the two models, the accuracy was 85.7% and 80.2%, respectively.
