In order to promote recycling of animal and plant residues, it is necessary to prepare detailed statistics on the sources, generation amount and the state of disposal so that waste recycling companies and enterprises can obtain the information easily. Also, the recycling methods specified in the law should be appropriate. For this, the study reviewed the appropriateness of detailed classification of animal and plant residues and permitted recycling methods in the Enforcement Regulations of the Waste Management Act of Korea. For improvement of the detailed classification, the study conducted literature review on European and Japanese ones. Additionally, we visited slaughterhouses of livestock and poultry, vegetable oils manufacturing companies, starches and glucose or maltose manufacturing companies, which generate the waste and recycle the waste, to grasp the status of recycling in Korea. Based on the results, the study proposes improvement measures for the detailed classification and the permitted recycling types in the law.
The issues of environmental pollution and labor safety on ship recycling in the undeveloped countries such as India, Bangladesh, etc have been proclaimed. For this, IMO has been actively participated in resolving such problems since 1998 and then finally the International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships is going to be adopted in this year. The convention provides the design, construction, operation and preparation of ships in order to facilitate safe and environmentally sound recycling as well as the safe and environmentally sound operation of ship recycling facilities. Therefore, the purposes of this study are to introduce the major contents of ship recycling convention and its time of entry into force and to analyse stakeholders' strategies toward it so that Korea will have a better position for the establishment of a mechanism regarding regulation stringency on environmentally sound ship recycling.

Since Korea is highly dependent on energy imports, it has been making efforts to save energy resources by enacting laws to promote resource saving and recycling. Recently, as a part of recycling of empty bottles, a bottle unattended collecting machine has been installed in the big shopping mall in the metropolitan area. However, there is no commercialization of the unattended collecting machine in Korea and the smart device application for providing information on empty bottle recycling is not yet provided. In this paper, we have designed and constructed a bottle recycling information management system to promote resource recycling. The manager has built a homepage that can manage the information of the empty bottle and the a bottle unattended collecting machine. Also, many people with smart devices can easily access bottle recycling information by using camera and barcode search and label search.
Number of vehicles in Korea is gradually increasing and it exceeded 16 million in 2007. Holding of vehicles is connected to disposal, owing to this reason the importance of ELVs recycling has been emphasized. The recycling of ELVs makes the disposal of ELVs easier as well as protects environment and it has the alternative effect economizing the insufficient resource. This study was carried out to evaluate the economic effect of recycling of ELVs compared with disposal of ELVs. The analysis showed that recycling process makes a profit in comparison to the disposal of ELVs. Therefore the government has to consider establishing the regulation related to recycling of ELVs or materials and car manufactures have to develop the efficient dismantling and recycling methods.

Waste refrigerator is the most large amount of item being recycled and the recycling process is the most complicated in WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) because refrigerator is biggest product and consists of various parts and materials such as ferrous, non-ferrous, and plastics. Recently, recycling process of waste refrigerator has been being more complex since large capacity 2 door refrigerators and standing Kimchi refrigerators with various material are distributed on custom market. In addition, recycling of valuable resource from waste refrigerator is mandatory by WEEEs recycling legislation; therefore, high efficiency recycling enough for economic and environment-friendly recovery of valuable resource through present technical situation analysis and comparison of recycling technologies of waste refrigerator with advanced country.
The residual heat and high CaO content present in the slag remaining in the ladle after the completion of continuous casting in the electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking process have been utilized to reduce power consumption and lime usage in the ladle furnace (LF) process. However, if the timing of such processes does not align with the LF and continuous casting operations, the recycling rate will decrease. To increase the slag recycling rate, the effect of ladle slag recycling methods, specifically pouring ladle slag into the slag pot in advance for subsequent recycling, on LF operations was analyzed. The slag liquefaction rate was calculated using the thermodynamic program Factsage 8.3 for ladle molten slag recycling methods. By applying each of the 10 heats operations for the ladle slag recycling methods, the desulfurization ability and LF operation performance were compared. It was found that when slag was immediately recycled into the ladle after continuous casting was completed, power consumption decreased by 0.3 MWh, LF operation time was shortened by 1.2 minutes, and the desulfurization rate increased by 5.8%.

This study aims at evaluating environmental impacts on recycling process of used small household appliances. The recycling process mainly consists of manual dismantling, crushing and various sorting processes to effectively recover valuable resources and to minimize environmental impact. In this study, life-cycle assessment (LCA) methodology is applied to analyze major environmental parameters such as GWP, ADP, POCP, EP, etc. One of the major impact categories on the weight basis in the recycling process is global warming (GWP) 57.1%, next to ADP 35.4% and POCP 4.8%, respectively. As a result of environmental impact on recovery of valuable resources/ton, the GWP of plastics for ABS is highest (33.7%) compared to ferrous metals (9.4%). The effects of environmental and economical benefit are also analyzed to compare with the amount of virgin materials to be recycled by recycled materials. In addition, recycled materials are also more economical in comparison to virgin materials due to the environmental avoiding effect by recycling. In conclusion, the key environmental issues related to the recycling of e-wastes are analyzed and therefore, the effective recycling process will contribute to mitigate global warming potential in the near future.
The purpose of this study were (1) to investigate the effect of environments on the ecological value orientation (2) to examine the effect of environments and ecological value orientation on housewives' recycling behavior and (3) to analyze the hypothesized causal model of the housewives' recycling behavior in order to explain direct and indirect effects of the selected variables. 687 samples were selected from housewives living in Seoul. Cronbach's a, descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression were used for data analysis The major findings are as follows: Housewives' recycling behavior In conclusion the result of the path analysis explained the contribution of variables on housewives' household recycling. It was found that the ecological value orientation makes the most significant contribution to household recycling.
The purposes of the study were: 1) to classify and describe causes of producing wasted furniture and household electric appliances by consumers, 2) to identify the influence of variables on causes of producing wasted furniture and household electric appliances and experience of consumer's recycling behaviors, and 3) to introduce the ways of activating recycling in wasted furniture and household electric appliances which suggested by consumers. 1,132 housewives living in Seoul, Sungnam, and Choongjoo were used as a final sample of the analysis. Data were collected using a self-administered survey. The result of the study indicated the major variable which affects producing wasted furniture and household electric appliances was the perception of recycling. Also, the level of consumers' recycling behavior in furniture and household electric appliances was very low and age and housing type were the major variables which affect consumers' recycling behavior. Finally, the implications and recommendations for consumers, enterprises, and society were suggested.

This study examined the effects of multiple recycling on deinkability and properties of recycled paper from laser computer printout(LCPO). First, alkaline paper with a 20% printed area was disintegrated by TAPPI standard disintegrator. After dewatering , the pulp was followed by flotation, handsheet making, and drying at room temperature, in order. A sequence of printing , disintegrating, flotating , handsheet making and drying was one recycling cycle and this cyclic treatment was repeateed from zero to five times. The residual ink content in recycled handsheets by SEM-EDXA and Py-GC analyseswas increased slightly as recycling number increase. After five cycles of recycling the ISO brightness of recycled handsheets dropped to about 90% of the original brightness. However, it had a gain of 10% in opacity. The most of physical properties of recycled handsheets were decreased as recycling numbers increase except of for tear strength.
