Study on the Modification Effect of Lightweight Aggregate using Blast Furnace Slag (고로슬래그 미분말을 이용한 경량골재의 표면개질 효과에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, building structures tend to be super high-rise and large-scale with the development of concrete technology. When high-rise building is constructed of reinforced concrete structure, it has a disadvantage that its own weight increases. Light weight aggregate(LWA) was developed to compensate for these shortcomings. Manufacturing concrete using these light weight aggregates has the advantage of reducing the self weight of the reinforced concrete structure, but has a disadvantage in that the strength of the concrete is reduced. In this study, an experimental study was conducted to investigate the strength characteristics of hardened cement according to the presence or absence of surface coating of lightweight aggregates. As a result, in terms of compressive strength, the surface-coated lightweight aggregate exhibited higher strength than the uncoated lightweight aggregate. Also, it was considered that this is because the interfacial voids of the surface coated lightweight aggregate mixed cement hardened body were filled with blast furnace slag fine powder particles.

A Study on the Correlation between Strength and Compaction of Porous Concrete Using Bottom Ash Aggregate (바텀애시 골재를 사용한 다공성 콘크리트의 강도와 컴펙션의 상관관계 연구)

  • In this paper, the effect of compression levels on the strengths of porous concrete using bottom ash aggregates was analyzed. Coal bottom ash (CBA) was used as aggregate in porous concrete in this study. The aggregate size types used in the CBA concrete mixtures were catagorized into two different ones. One included only a single aggregate particle size and the other included hybrid aggregate particles mixed at a ratio of 8:2 volume proportion. The water-binder ratio was fixed at 0.30, and the compression levels were applied at 0.5, 1.5, and 3.0 MPa valu es to fabricate a porou s concrete specimen. The total porosity, compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural tensile strengths were tested and analyzed. When the compression level increased, the total porosity decreased, meanwhile the compressive, split tensile, and flexural tensile strengths increased. The total porosity of concrete using hybrid aggregate was lower and the strength was larger than those of concrete using single-type aggregate. Finally, the correlation between the total porosity, compressive, split tensile, and flexural tensile strengths of porous concrete were presented. The total porosity and strength characteristics showed an inversely proportional correlation.

  • Technological advancements in the field of building materials are achieved day by day. In this study, a new lightweight concrete aggregate is produced by mixing certain rates of colemanite (0%, 7.5%, 12.5%, 17.5%), cement and coating the surface of pumice aggregate with this mixture. Thin aggregate sections are analyzed with specific gravity, unit weight, water absorption, impact, and crushing experiments. In this way, the production of cement and cement+colemanite coated lightweight concrete aggregates is investigated and an opinion on the likely behavior of these concrete types is provided.

A Study on a Steel Slag Asphalt Concrete Design Method Considering Density and Absorption (밀도와 흡수율을 고려한 제강슬래그 아스팔트 콘크리트의 배합설계 방법 연구)

  • PURPOSES : This paper presents a mix design method for using steel slag as an aggregate for asphalt mixtures. METHODS : Steel slag has a different density and absorption rate than natural aggregates. The asphalt content was calculated according to the steel slag characteristics, and the formula for aggregate-gradation correction was presented. RESULTS : The asphalt mix was designed using the proposed equations. Using the proposed mix design method, it was possible to design the asphalt mixture according to the target-usage amount of the recycled aggregate. CONCLUSIONS : The suggested method can be used for asphalt mix design using aggregates with different densities and absorption rates. It is expected to contribute to quality improvement by ensuring accurate calculation of mixing ratios for steel slag asphalt mixtures.

The Application of Copper Smelting Slag as Concrete aggregate (콘크리트용 동슬래그 골재의 활용 기술)

  • The total production of the smelted copper reaches 450,000 tons per year, and the production of copper-related goods grows year by year owing to the extension of facilities and the development of production techniques. On the other hand, the volume of slag discharges by-produced at the time of copper smelting process is also on trend of increase. The by-produced copper smelting slag amounts to 700,000 tons a year, which is one and half times of the total smelted copper production. Accordingly nobody disagrees that comprehensive researches on how to deal with and how to reuse the accumulated smelting copper slag have to be encouraged. Even though the possible uses of the copper smelting slag have being made on various levels at present as materials for iron powder cement, sand-blasting and fire-proofing rock wool, but a considerable volume of the slag is abandoned as unnecessary by burying or piling up in careless in the open ground.

Analysis on the dynamic characteristics of RAC frame structures

  • The dynamic tests of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) are carried out, the rate-dependent mechanical models of RAC are proposed. The dynamic mechanical behaviors of RAC frame structure are investigated by adopting the numerical simulation method of the finite element. It is indicated that the lateral stiffness and the hysteresis loops of RAC frame structure obtained from the numerical simulation agree well with the test results, more so for the numerical simulation which is considered the strain rate effect than for the numerical simulation with strain rate excluded. The natural vibration frequency and the lateral stiffness increase with the increase of the strain rate. The dynamic model of the lateral stiffness is proposed, which is reasonably applied to describe the effect of the strain rate on the lateral stiffness of RAC frame structure. The effect of the strain rate on the structural deformation and capacity of RAC is analyzed. The analyses show that the inter-story drift decreases with the increase of the strain rate. However, with the increasing strain rate, the structural capacity increases. The dynamic models of the base shear coefficient and the overturning moment of RAC frame structure are developed. The dynamic models are important and can be used to evaluate the strength deterioration of RAC structure under dynamic loading.
