  • To improve the current waveform of diode rectifiers, we propose a new operating principle for the voltage-doubler diode rectifiers. In the conventional voltage-doubler rectifier circuit, relatively large capacitors are used to boost the output voltage, while the proposed circuit uses smaller ones and a small reactor not to boost the output voltage but improve the input current waveform. A circuit design method is shown by experimentation and confirmed simulation. The experimental results of the proposed diode rectifier satisfies the harmonic guide lines. A high input power factor of 97(%) and an efficiency of 98[%] are also obtained. The new rectifier with no controlled switches meet the harmonic guide lines, resulting in a simple, reliable and low-cost at-to dc converters in comparison with the boost-type current-improving circuits. This paper proposes a nonlinear impedance circuit composed by diodes and inductors or capacitors. This circuit needs no control circuits and switches, and the impedance value is changed by the polarity of current or voltage. And this paper presents one of these applications to improve the input current of capacitor input diode rectifiers. The rectifier using the nonlinear impedance circuit is constructed with four diodes and four capacitors in addition to the conventional rectifiers, that is, it has eight diodes and five capacitors, including a DC link capacitor. It makes harmonic components of the input current reduction and the power factor improvement. Half pulse-width modulated (HPWM) inverter was explained compared with conventional pulse width modulated(PWM) inverter. Proposed HPWM inverter eliminated dead-time by lowering switching loss and holding over-shooting.

  • The single-phase switched reluctance motor(SRM) drive requires DC source which is generally supplied through a rectifier connected with a commercial source. The rectifier is consist of a diode full bridge and a filter circuit. Usually the filter circuit uses capacitor with large value capacitance to reduce ripple component of DC power. Although the peak torque ripple of SRM is small, the short charge and discharge current of the filter capacitor draws the low power factor and system efficiency. A modified single phase SRM drive system is presented in this paper, which includes drive circuit realizing reduction of torque ripple and improvement of power factor. In the proposed drive circuit, one switching part and diode which can separate the output of AC/DC rectifier from the filter capacitor is added. Also, a upper switch of drive circuit is exchanged a diode in order to reduce power switching device. Therefore the number of power switch device is not changed, two diodes are only added in the SRM drive. To verify the proposed system, some simulation and experimental results are presented.

  • An analysis of the junction capacitance in resonant rectifiers which has a significant impact on the operating point of resonance circuits is studied in this paper, where the junction capacitance of the rectifier diode is to decrease the resonant current and output voltage in the circuit when compared with that in an ideal rectifier diode. This can be represented by a simplified series resonant equivalent circuit and a voltage transfer function versus the normalized operating frequency at varied values of the resonant capacitor. A low voltage to high voltage push-pull DC/DC resonant converter was used as a design example. The design procedure is based on the principle of the half bridge class-DE resonant rectifier, which ensures more accurate results. The proposed scheme provides a more systematic and feasible solution than the conventional resonant push-pull DC/DC converter analysis methodology. To increase circuit efficiency, the main switches and the rectifier diodes can be operated under the zero-voltage and zero-current switching conditions, respectively. In order to achieve this objective, the parameters of the DC/DC converter need to be designed properly. The details of the analysis and design of this DC/DC converter's components are described. A prototype was constructed with a 62-88 kHz variable switching frequency, a 12 $V_{DC}$ input voltage, a 380 $V_{DC}$ output voltage, and a rated output power of 150 W. The validity of this approach was confirmed by simulation and experimental results.

  • An improved bridgeless interleaved boost power factor correction (PFC) rectifier to improve power efficiency and component utilization is proposed in this study. With combined conventional bridgeless PFC circuit and interleaved technology, the proposed rectifier consists of two interleaved and magnetic inter-coupling boost bridgeless converter cells. Each cell operates alternatively in the critical conduction mode, which can achieve the soft-switching characteristics of the switches and increase power capacity. Auxiliary blocking diodes are employed to eliminate undesired circulating loops and reduce current-sensing noise, which are among the serious drawbacks of a dual-boost PFC rectifier. Magnetic component utilization is improved by symmetrically coupling two inductors on a unique core, which can achieve independence from each other based on the auxiliary diodes. Through the interleaved approach, each switch can operate in the whole line cycle. A simple control scheme is employed in the circuit by using a conventional interleaved controller. The operation principle and theoretical analysis of the converter are presented. A 600 W experimental prototype is built to verify the theoretical analysis and feasibility of the proposed rectifier. System efficiency reaches 97.3% with low total harmonic distortion at full load.

  • As the import and export cargos across the world increase with global trade environments, the ecocide caused lots of small marine organisms in the ship's ballast water is a big issue. The implementation of the BWTS (Ballast water treatment system) thus needs low-voltage high-current rectifier for electrolytic disinfection. So this paper proposes a suitable high-current inverter-type rectifier for electrolytic disinfection of seawater and analyzes its output characteristics. It also suggests the practical design guidelines for the proposed rectifier in terms of power circuit and controller designs.

  • Rectifiers are widely used in industrial applications. Although detailed models of rectifiers are usually used to evaluate their performance, they are complex and time-consuming. Therefore, the Average Value Model (AVM) has been introduced to meet the demand for a simple and accurate model. This type of rectifier modeling can be used to simplify the simulations of large systems. The AVM of diode rectifiers has been an area of interest for many electrical engineers. However, healthy diode rectifiers are only considered for average value modeling. By contrast, faults occur frequently on diodes, which eventually cause the diodes to open-circuit. Therefore, it is essential to model bridge rectifiers under this faulty condition. Indeed, conventional AVMs are not appropriate or accurate for faulty rectifiers. In addition, they are significantly different in modeling. In this paper, a novel application of the parametric average value of a three-phase line-commutated rectifier is proposed in which one diode of the rectifier is considered open-circuited. In order to evaluate the proposed AVM, it is compared with experimental and simulation results for the application of a brushless synchronous generator field. The results clearly demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed model.

  • A surge protection device of the metal oxide varistor(MOV) has been commonly used for preventing electrical damage in many electronic equipments. The MOV has a property that leakage current is increased and might be permanently damaged when it is exposed continuously to the electrical stresses such as lightening surges. In this paper, we propose a novel surge protection circuit adopting a silicon controlled rectifier(SCR) in the traditional protection circuits using the MOV device simultaneously. When lightning surges are injected to the proposed circuit, the MOV lets the surge pulses bypassing through the ground at first up to the level that SCR begins to operate. Above the threshold level of turning on the SCR, the SCR operates bypasses large surge currents to the ground. Proposed circuit was verified with a leakage current experiment and PSpice circuit simulations under the repeated surge injection environment.

  • A new PWM rectifier which offers a unity power factor is proposed. The circuit has same inductance as the conventional boosting type PWM rectifier in powering mode, but the inductance is splitted to 2 part in freewheeling mode. So the period of freewheeling mode is shorter than that of conventional boosting type PWM rectifier, and discontinuous input current is obtained in wide duty range. Therefore the proposed PWM rectifier accomplishs a unity power factor in wide range of duty ratio and boosting factor. And the conventional boosting type PWM rectifier has poor power factor near the unity boosting ratio, the proposed PWM rectifier improves this problem. The mathmatical analysis are presented and experimental results are given.

  • To solve the low efficiency problem of low-voltage power supplies, it has been studied to replace the schottky barrier diode with the MOSFET synchronous rectifier. In this paper, Phase Shift-Controlled Clamp Mode Zero Voltage Switching-Multi Resonant Converter with Synchronous Rectifier (PSC CM ZVS-MRC with SR) is presented to achieve high efficiency in low-voltage power supplies. The characteristics analysis of synchronous rectifier is established by using the MOSFET equivalent circuit and efficiency comparison is established between the Synchronous Rectifier and the schottky barrier diode. To verify the validity of the analysis, 33W(3.3V, 10A) PSC CM ZVS-MRC with self-driven synchronous rectifier at switching frequency of 1MHz is designed and tested. And it is confirmed that the experimental results are well consistent with the theoretical results. The maximum efficiency of the converter is 83.4% at full load, which is 3.3% higher than conventional schottky diode rectification.
