  • This paper presents a $4{\times}1$ beam-forming reader antenna system for a new type of RFID based train position detection technology. The required beamwidth of the reader antenna is analytically expressed for different train speeds. The proposed antenna system consists of four rectangular patch elements and two switching couplers which are designed, without any impedance matching networks, for two different antenna modes. The switching coupler is a rectangular quadrature coupler with Pin diodes connecting its center line and the ground plane. The beamwidth of the antenna when the diodes are off and on is $18^{\circ}$ and $39^{\circ}$, respectively. The proposed antenna system will be used for a real train test in the near future.

  • In this paper, the miniaturized linear and circular polarization microstrip antennas are designed and fabricated at the resonant frequency of 1.575 GHz. To miniaturize the microstrip patch antenna(MPA), the 'L' type plates are attached under the rectangular microstrip patch. In case of the linear polarization, the size of the microstrip antenna attached the 14 plates is reduced to $67.9\%(47mm{\times}47mm)$ compared with general $MPA(83mm{\times}83mm)$. The return loss and -10 dB bandwidth are -34.4 dB and 49 $MHz(3.1\%)$. And the radiation pattern is broad through the size reduction of the patch. Also in case of the circular polarization, the size of the microstrip antenna with 13 plates is reduced to $54.6\%(53mm{\times}54mm)$ compared with the general $MPA(76mm{\times}83mm)$. The axial ratio is 1.37dB at 1.575 GHz, the 2 dB axial ratio bandwidth is 14 $MHz(0.8\%)$. As that result, we could confirm that 3-dimensional structure with attached 'L' shaped plate is proper form for the miniaturization of linear and circular polarization microstrip antenna.

  • In this paper, we present a wideband patch antenna with folded and shorted structure for 5 GHz WLAN(Wireless Local Area Network). The proposed antenna used folded and shorted structure in the rectangular patch for miniaturization and wide frequency bandwidth. The antenna was designed by using 3D simulation program, HFSS(High Frequency Structure Simulator) software of the Ansoft company and the implemented antenna was measured by using HP 8720c network analyzer and far field measurement chamber. Simulation result on the return loss shows fairly good characteristic of at least 13.41dB in whole frequency range of interests, and the 10dB bandwidth is 1,523MHz which shows wide bandwidth characteristic. And the simulated maximum gain of the proposed antenna is 6.57 dBi at 5.825GHz. Measured result for the 10dB bandwidth of the implemented folded and shorted structure antenna is 1,377 MHz. Measured maximum gain of the implemented antenna is 6.87dBi at 5.775GHz. Measured results for the implemented antenna showed applicable performances for the 5 GHz WLAN.

  • This paper reports the transparent electrode, which would be applied to transparent displays and smart glasses. Herein, a squared metal mesh with the most widely used copper wire in microwaves is studied for the alternating thin-film-type transparent and conducting indium tin oxide(ITO), with a low conductivity(sheet resistance > $5{\Omega}/sq.$). The electromagnetic performance of a patch antenna with metal mesh is analyzed. This paper presents the results of the optical(OT, optical transparent) and electrical(sheet resistance) characteristics of a squared metal mesh, which is a basic design. To improve the OT, copper wire(w=0.2 mm) is used in fabricating the squared metal mesh and the relationship between the OT and the antenna performance(radiation gain, radiation pattern) was analyzed according to the mesh size(l=1, 2 mm). The measurement results show that the antenna performance and the optical characteristic are in inverse proportion to each other. In real applications, the optical and electrical characteristics, and the costs of production are to be considered.

  • In this paper, the dual-faced monopole antenna, which is arranged by numerous rectangular ring patches in sequence for the multi-bands is proposed. The ring type structure of the patch can be increased the bandwidth. Therefore the bandwidth and beam width are improved by using multiple arrayed patches. When the ring type patches are inserted serially, the resonance frequencies are occurred by the current flow from the first ring patch. It is possible because the gap between the patches is very narrow. In addition, if the patches are composed on the same plane as the feed-line, fabrication could be very difficult because the gap between the patches is extremely narrow. The thickness and permittivity of the antenna, moreover, are very important parameters because both sides of the substrate are used. We finally found the optimal thickness and permittivity to generate the coupling effect by simulation. All patches are consisted of 4-steps which the patch size was decreased 85 % by each step. In conclusion, the resonant frequency bands are 1.75~2.6 GHz(850 MHz), 3.24~3.46 GHz(220 MHz), 3.8~4.0 GHz(200 MHz), and 4.4~4.9 GHz(500 MHz).

  • In this paper, we introduce a novel feeding method for a broadband planar quasi-Yagi antenna (QYA) for terrestrial digital television (DTV) receiving. The balun between the balanced coplanar strip (CPS) line feeding the driver dipole and the unblanaced microstrip line is a rectangular patch inserted into the CPS line along the center of the CPS. The end of the balun is connected to the CPS line through a shorting pin. The effects of various geometrical parameters and balun on the antenna characteristics are examined. An antenna, as an design example for the proposed antenna, is designed for the operation in the frequency band of 470-806 MHz for terrestrial DTV.

  • A numerical model for multiple reflection effects of a polarized beam on laser grooving has been developed. The surface of the treated material is assumed to reflect laser irradiation in a fully specular fashion. Combining electromagnetic wave theory with Fresnel's relation, the reflective behavior of a groove surface can be obtained as well as the change of the polarization status in the reflected wave field. The material surface is divided into a number of rectangular patches using a bicubic surface representation method. The net radiative flux far these patch elements is obtained by standard ray tracing methods. The changing state of polarization of the electric field after reflection was included in the ray tracing method. The resulting radiative flux is combined with a set of three-dimensional conduction equations governing conduction losses into the medium, and the resulting groove shape and depth are found through iterative procedures. It is observed that reflections of a polarized beam play an important role not only in increasing the material removal rate but also in forming different final groove shapes. Comparison with available experimental results for silicon nitride shows good agreement for the qualitative trends of the dependence of groove shapes on the electric field vector orientation.

  • A compact ultra-wide band antenna with a quadruple band-notched characteristic is proposed. The proposed antenna consists of a slotted trapezoid patch radiator, an inverted U-shaped band stop filter, a pair of C-shaped band stop filters, and a rectangular ground plane. To realize the quadruple notch-band characteristic, a U-shaped slot, a complementary split ring resonator, an inverted U-shaped band stop filter, and two C-shaped band stop filters are utilized in this antenna. The antenna satisfies the -10 dB reflection coefficient bandwidth requirement in the frequency band of 2.88-12.67 GHz, with a band-rejection characteristic in the WiMAX (3.43-3.85 GHz), WLAN (5.26-6.01 GHz), X-band satellite communication (7.05-7.68 GHz), and ITU 8 GHz (8.08-8.87 GHz) signal bands. In addition, the proposed antenna has a compact volume of $30mm{\times}33.5mm{\times}0.8mm$ while maintaining omnidirectional patterns in the H-plane. The experimental and simulated results of the proposed antenna are shown to be in good agreement.
