  • It is important to consider an effect of concrete member sizes when estimating the ACI rectangular stress block of a reinforced concrete flexural member. However, the experimental data and analytical analyses are still not available for a proper evaluation. For all types of loading conditions, the trend is that the size of an ACI rectangular stress block tends to change when the member sizes change. In this paper, the size variations of strength coefficients for ACI rectangular stress block and actual stress distribution have been studied. Results of a series of C-shaped specimens subjected to axial compressive load and bending moment were adopted from references 1 and 2. The analysis results show that the effect of specimen sizes on strength coefficients for ACI rectangular stress block and actual stress distribution of concrete member was apparent. Thus, the results suggest that the current strength criteria based design practice should be reviewed.

  • In this study, finite element analysis for multi-stage deep drawing process of rectangular configuration with extreme aspect ratio is carried out especially for the blank design. The analysis of rectangular deep drawing process with extreme aspect ratio is likewise very difficult with respect to the design process parameters including the intermediate die profile. In order to solve the difficulties, numerical approach using finite element method is performed in the present analysis and design. A series of experiments for multi-stage rectangular deep drawing process are conducted and the deformed configuration is investigated by comparing with the results of the finite element analysis. Additionally, to minimize amount of removal material after trimming process, finite element simulation is applied for the blank modification. The analysis incorporates brick elements for a rigid-plastic finite element method with an explicit time integration scheme using LS-DYNA3D.

  • An electromagnetic boundary-value problem of a tapered rectangular waveguide is rigorously solved based on eigenfunction expansion and the mode-matching method. Scattering parameters of the tapered rectangular waveguide are represented in a series form and calculated in terms of different rectangular waveguide combinations. Computation is performed to analyze reflection and transmission characteristics. Conductor loss by surface current density is also calculated and discussed.

  • Three-dimensional numerical analysis of the flow around rectangular cylinders with various side ratios, D/H, from 0.2 to 2.0, was carried out for Reynolds number of 10³ by using a multi-directional finite difference method on a regular-arranged multi-grid. The predicted results are in good agreement with the experimental data. It is found that fluid dynamic characteristics of rectangular cylinders alternate between the high-pressure mode and the low-pressure mode of the base pressure for D/H=0.2-0.6. We show that this phenomenon is induced by the change of the flow pattern around rectangular cylinders.

  • A novel design for a simple rectangular ring with open-ended monopole antenna wireless local area network (WLAN) applications is proposed in this article. The proposed antenna consists of an open-ended rectangular ring, an inverted L-strip, and a rectangular slit in the ground plane, and is fed by a 50 ${\Omega}$ microstrip feed-line. Prototypes of the proposed antenna were designed, fabricated, and tested. Experimental results show that the proposed antenna receives 2.3125-2.775 GHz and 4.8625-6.7125 GHz with a return loss less than -10 dB, covering the required bandwidths of the 2.4/5.2/5.8 GHz WLAN standards. Meanwhile, the 2D radiation patterns and 3D gain performance of the antenna in the operation bands were also observed and discussed.

  • Generally, the buckling of thin-walled structures has studied for rectangular sections or circular sections. Rectangular sections have small stiffness and circular sections have large stiffness when they are compared with rectangular sections for local buckling. But both of them have similar stiffness to column buckling. Therefore in this paper, we are going to analyze the local buckling for the box section with rounded comer and compare with rectangular section. Also we confirm that the rounded comer section has larger local buckling strength than rectangular section.

  • Milli-structure components are classified as a component group whose size is between macro and micro scales, that is, about smaller than 20mm and larger than 1mm. The forming of these components has a typical phenomenon of bulk deformation with thin sheets because of the forming size. In this study, milli-structure rectangular cup drawing is analyzed and measured using the finite element method and experiments. Special containers or cases of cellular phone vibrator to save installation space are produced by rectangular-shaped drawing. A systematic approach is established for the design and the experiment of the forming processes for rectangular milli-structure cases. To verify the simulation results, the experimental investigations were also carried out on a real industrial product. The numerical analysis by FEM shows good agreement with the experimental results in view of the deformation shape of the product.

  • Fluid flow in a rectangular duct system are measured by W laser doppler velocity meter, and also computed by commercial software of STAR-CD for comparison between then First, for a rectangular duct with 90 degree metered elbow, the fluid flow with Reynolds numbs's of 1,508 is predicted by assumption of both laminar and turbulent models. But, even though the Reynolds number is less than 2,300-3,000, the computation by turbulent model is close to the experimental data. Moeover, the computation by turbulent model for Reynolds number of 11,751 also predicts the experimental data satisfactorily. Second, for a rectangular duct with two branch ducts, the ratios between flow rates in the two branches are invariant to Reynolds number according to both of numerical and experimental results.

  • The dynamic response characteristics of a rectangular fluid container are investigated by using finite element method. The fluid is assumed to be linear-elastic, inviscid and compressible. A displacement-based fluid finite element was employed to allow for the effects of the fluid. A typical rectangular fluid container, which is used in recent studies, is considered for the numerical analysis. The North-South component of El Centro Earthquake records is used as input ground acceleration. Rigid and flexible fluid containers solutions are obtained for the chosen sample tank. Hydrodynamic pressures and sloshing motions are determined using Lagrangian fluid finite element. The results obtained from this study are compared with the results obtained by boundary-finite element method (BEM-FEM) and requirements of Eurocode-8. Based on the numerical analysis, some conclusions and discussions on the design considerations for rectangular fluid containers are presented.
