  • This study is conducted to evaluate economical value of Jeju grassland and validity of its preservation, and draw up several measures to support. To measure its economical value, this study examined its environmental value and social and cultural value. For environmental value, this study used replacement method while it applied CVM method, a widely used method, to assess social and cultural value and two-level two-best choice selection method, which ask questions by assuming virtual circumstances to avoid reflecting some biased opinions. Jeju grassland has multiple functions-environmental functions such as preventing soil corrosion and flood, handling animal excrement, and purifying air, and social and cultural functions such as promoting physical and mental health and providing recreation places. From the results of the feasibility study, Jeju grassland's annual multiple functions are assessed to have a total $397,115{\sim}418,995$ million won worth. In addition, it is found that Jeju visitors recognize Jeju grassland for its functions to contribute to public interests. That is, they think it can provide attractive views and educational and recreational places and promote emotional development. Especially, many people presented their ideas that it be continuously preserved since it is worthwhile for us and our next generations. To preserve grassland's cultural resource, which create a huge economic value like this, the Government has to support a certain amount of financial aid for turning to a better grassland environment and its maintenance to realize environment-friendly livestock farming on Jeju Island and promote its tourism industry and consequently, add more value to Jeju.

  • Neighborhood Parks are important facilities for urban residents, which provide recreation and vitality to users. But it can degenerate into crime-ridden area in the absence of control system. Recently, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design is confirmed to be effective for safety enhancement, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport promulgates enforcement regulation about urban parks and greens. In the enforcement regulation, consideration of CPTED in park design is mandatory. However, there is no systematic guideline for the application and continuous maintenance control. So we develop evaluation indicators of neighborhood park about CPTED, and verify the weighted value of the evaluation indicator through survey targeting related field experts. Then, we evaluate safety of neighborhood parks in Busan using developed evaluation indicators, by three types of CPTED application level. On the physical design elements Busan Citizen Park which applied CPTED method from the design phase received the remarkably hightest score, whereas, on the social elements score was investigated differently in accordance with characteristics of each park.

  • This study was carried out to offer the systematical and scientific method of regional environment conservation by deciding the rank using fuzzy theory, and try to find the methodology to accurately accomplished the regional environment assessment for sound land conservation. The results were as follows. To transform the Likert's scale granted to assessment indicators into the type of triangular fuzzy number (a, b, c), there was conversion to each minimum (a), median (b), and maximum (c) in applying membership function. We used the center of gravity and eigenvalue leading to the rank. In the sequential analysis of rank-based test of assessment indicators by triangular fuzzy number, the result proclaimed that ranking of the indicators was, in the biotic field, in the order of 'dominance', 'sociality', 'coverage' and in the abiotic one, 'soil pH', 'T-N', 'soil property', and in the qualitative one, 'impact rating class', 'hemeroby degree', 'land use pattern', and in the functional one, 'protection of water resource', 'offer of recreation', 'protection of soil erosion'. Therefore, there was a difference between subjective rank from human and the rank from triangular fuzzy number. In other words, the scientific rank decision would be not so much being subjective and biased as dealing with human thoughts mathematically by triangular fuzzy number.

  • The Gamrotenghwa of the Choson Dynasty is a unique genre of buddhist painting in that the destiny of the dead souls and the guidance to nirvana are expressed in reality. More than 50 of the Gamrotenghwa are known to be present, and the lower part of the paintings includes a wide assortment of folk customary scenes reflecting the social life style of the time when the painting was drawn, such as difficulties in life. public life, punishment and war. Changes in the costume of the people shown on the customary scenes of the Gamrotenghwa according to the time based changes in painting style were investigated in this study. The results are summarized in three points. First, the costumes of bureaucrats showed a tendency of preservation without any major changes in the painting. On the other hand, costumes of public and entertainer in the scenes were very close to those worn by the people at that time. The realistic description of public life in the painting may establish the value of the Gamrotenghwa as the historical documents. Second, the costume of the people in the painting showed a dual structure as the social positions; bureaucrats wore various official hats, large coats and belts to expose their social prestige. while the general public wore simple and convenient clothing which is divided into shirt and pants. The dual structure of the costume in the painting is in well accordance with that of the later period of Choson dynasty, suggesting that the customary scenes in the painting represent the social life style of the period. Finally, the customary scenes in the Gamrotenghwa are very variegated. which shows a variety of beauty of wearing even though they look coarse in a sense. The diversity of wearing beauty in the picture may contribute to the recreation of the beauty of shape in the new design of Hanbok.

  • In this study, the functional priority of wetlands was determined through analysis of previous research. To determine relative importance, three processes were performed. First, quantitative values from the case studies were normalized. Second, non-quantitative values were prioritized based on standard criteria. Third, equal weight was applied as long as there was no special consideration regarding a particular value's disproportionate priority in the research. Finally, results were grouped into large, medium, and small classes. In this study, the functions of the medium class were found to be the most significant, in the following order of priority: water supply and ground water recharge; culture and recreation; biodiversity; product; water quality control; flood control; erosion control; moderation of climate change; and provision of biochemical matter. To verify these results, we compared our findings with those of an assessment that used the Rapid Assessment Method (RAM) on the same type of study area. Whereas this comparison indicated some correlations by the culture, water storage, and genetic sustainability functions, it suggested a lack of such relationship by the water purification and flood prevention functions.

  • There is imminent need to find a way to measure the recreational benefits of water so that appropriate actions can be taken to make a multi-purpose reservoir. Therefore, this study attempts to apply a choice experiment to quantifying the recreational benefits of a multi-purpose reservoir, using a specific case study of Sangkwan multi-purpose reservoir. We consider the trade-offs between price and attributes of recreational attributes for selecting a preferred alternative and derive the marginal willingness to pay (MWTP) estimate for each attribute. The results show that the MWTP for providing additional 10,000 ton of water is estimated to be 3 won per household per year. The MWTP for improving 1 level of water quality is computed to be 645.5 won per household per year. Moreover, the MWTP for providing recreation facilities is calculated to be 1,518.6 won per household per year. This study allows us to provide policy-makers with useful quantitative information that can reduce uncertainty in the decision-making process related to a multi-purpose reservoir construction projects.

  • Various buildings constructed by environmentally friendly resources are being built in KOREA. Especially as the wood has distinctive ecological merits in comparison with reinforced concrete and brick, the buildings made by the wood are acknowledged with its superiority of ecological value. Enough field studies for their thermal environment, however, haven't been done. In this study, to investigate indoor environmental condition and occupants' response to it of Log Cabin in Gyeongsangnam-do Hamyang Country Jirisan Natural Recreation Forest, examination of indoor thermal environment and field subjective evaluation have been done in that fundamental information of thermal environment characteristics can be suggested. The results are following; 1) Thermal environment of the Log Cabins; Indoor and outdoor mean dry bulb temperature were $21.9^{\circ}C$ and $-3.1^{\circ}C$, and Indoor and outdoor average relative humidity were 25.8% and 52.1%. These results are below ASHRAE; dry bulb temp. $22.0^{\circ}C$, humidity 30%, and above domestic standards; dry bulb temp. $18{\sim}20.0^{\circ}C$, humidity $40{\sim}60%$. 2) Result of subjective evaluation; Thermal sensation and its comfort were evaluated as 'slightly uncomfortable' because of 'slightly warm'. And humid sensation and its comfort were evaluated as 'slightly uncomfortable' because of 'slightly warm'. 3) Result of vertical temperature and humidity; Vertical temperature difference from head to ankle was $0.54^{\circ}C$ which means most occupants may feel comfortable.
