  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a 3-week somatosensory stimulation program on the integrity of the somatosensory pathway of patients with brain damage. Method: The sample consisted of two groups of patients with brain damage matched by Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores and age:8 patients with a mean age of 56.75 years who were treated with somatosensory stimulation, and 8 patients with a mean age of 58.88 years, who were not treated with sensory intervention program. A repeated measures matched-control group design was used to assess functional recovery of the brain. The instrument used in this study was SSEP (somatosensory evoked potentials), a neurophysiological parameter, for the integrity of the somatosensory pathway. Results: The hypothesis that patients with brain damage who were treated with the somatosensory stimulation program will show higher SSEP wave form scores than the non-treatment group was supported (3rd week.: U=13.000, p=.014). Additional repeated measures analysis showed that there were no significant differences in recovery trends between the groups (F=1.945, p=.159). Conclusion: This study demonstrates that a somatosensory stimulation program is effective in promoting recovery of the integrity of the somatosensory pathway of patients with brain damage.

  • This study sought to investigate the effects of the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) program on postoperative recovery and nutritional status in patients with colorectal cancer undergoing laparoscopic surgery. A total of 37 patients were included: 19 in the experimental group and 18 in the control group. The experimental group was supplemented with carbohydrate drinks before and after surgery, and the control group was maintained with fasting and water intake in the traditional method. Both care management and nutrition education were implemented for both groups. Patients were evaluated for physical condition, clinical indicators, blood tests, pain, length of stay, nutritional status, and nutrient intake. Use of the ERAS program for the experimental group resulted in shorter length of stay (p = 0.006), less pain (p < 0.001), and a lower rate of malnutrition (p = 0.014) compared with controls. In conclusion, carbohydrate drinks provide great advantages by reducing discomfort, such as pain or thirst, during fasting in patients after colon cancer surgery, helping patients to eat comfortably and actively, minimizing insulin resistance, maintaining nitrogen balance, and reducing infection and anastomosis leakage. For use of ERAS as a standardized program, repeated and expanded research is needed, and a Korean-style ERAS should be prepared by using this approach for various diseases.

  • The purpose of this research is to study the utility of prediction program like a F.E.M. analysis for energy recovery of heat exchanger with heat pipe which uses arbitrary groove wick. The program is based on the utility by the experimental and applytical method of the single heat pipe. It is also expanded and applied in the prediction program of the heat exchanger. The results are as follows; 1) The effective thermal conductivity of the groove wick with arbitrary shape is counted by the thermal resistance change. 2) The more the number of rows, the more the effect energy recovery changing by the number of rows, the bigger the free velocity, the smaller the effect of energy recovery. 3) The effect of energy recovery increases according to the value of the rate of mass flow (Me/Mc) and also number of rows. 4) The comparison between calculated and data shows good agreement within 2.5% error, therefore the F.E.M. analysis of the study is useful to predict the performance of heat pipe-heat exchanger.

  • As the elderly population increases, the incidence of lumbar fusion is increasing, and there has been increasing interest in rapid rehabilitation and functional recovery after surgery. Enhanced recovery after surgery program and multimodal pain control methods can reduce the complications and allow rapid recovery. Various methods have been used to increase the fusion.

  • A computer program, capable of performing thermal design analysis of the triple pressure bottoming system of combined cycle power plants, was developed. The program is based on thermal analysis of the heat recovery steam generator and estimation of its size and steam turbine power. The program is applicable to various parametric analyses including optimized design calculation. This paper presents examples of analysis results for the effects of arrangement of heat exchanger units, steam pressures and deaerating sources on design performance indices such as steam turbine power and the size of heat recovery steam generator.

  • Recently a new regime, called "back school" is advocated for the purpose of rapidly and economically returning a patient to full functional fitness and normal occupational activities. Assuming that this functional and vocational restoration is a goal of a regabilitation program, it is apparent that early recovery and higher success rate are major concern. In this study, a mixture model is developed and used to evaluate the recovery process of low back pain (LBP) patients in a rehabilitation program. The model provides (1) the probability of being recovered, and (2) the rate of recovery. Patients with gradual onset, with higher education, or of young age tend to show better prognosis.

  • Purpose: Recently, the interest in positive psychotherapy is growing, which can help to encourage positive relationships and develop strengths of people. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of a positive psychotherapy program on positive affect, interpersonal relations, resilience, and mental health recovery in community-dwelling people with schizophrenia. Methods: The research was conducted using a randomized control group pretest-posttest design. A total of 57 adults with schizophrenia participated in this study. The study participants in experimental group received a positive psychotherapy program (n=28) and the participants in control group received only the usual treatment in community centers (n=29). The positive psychotherapy program was provided for 5 weeks (of 10 sessions, held twice/week, for 60 minutes). The study outcomes included positive affect, interpersonal relations, resilience, and mental health recovery. The collected data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA for examining study hypothesis. Results: Results showed that interpersonal relations (F=11.83, p=.001) and resilience (F=9.62, p=.003) significantly increased in the experimental group compared to the control group. Although experimental group showed a slight increase in positive affect, it was not significant. Conclusion: The study findings confirm that the positive psychotherapy program is effective for improving interpersonal relations and resilience of community-dwelling people with schizophrenia. Based on the findings, we believe that the positive psychotherapy program would be acceptable and helpful to improve recovery of mental health in schizophrenia.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of recovery from psychological stress when watching plants indoors. As an instrument of measurement of psychological stress, Galvanic Skin Resistance(GSR) has been used because it has been convenient to read a psychological sign without a medical sense and an instrument. In order to make the conditions of stress and recovery, video programs have been made, and especially, the video program of recovery has consisted of three types-- types 1 of watching plants in a botanical garden, type 2 of watching very bush street, and type 3 of closing eyes naturally. The two groups of normal and the mentally handicapped persons have been participated in this experiment to compare the effect of recovery. As the result of this test, the rate of stress relief has been maximumly effected by watching the video program of plants. Between the two groups the recovery of stress has had better effects on the mentally handicapped than the normal one. And also it shows that the circumstances of emotional refinement is led by having plants in indoor. The result of this test has been turned out to be highly useful. It is desirable that a indoor worker, staying for a long time, contact with plants visually to keep healthy mental conditions. This study suggests that the surrounding conditions or the settings of circumstances play an important role for the emotional refinement of the groups of mentally han야capped persons as well as the normal person.

  • The purpose of this study was introduce peer mentoring which is well used in various rehabilitation areas in overseas country to Korea academically and clinically and help psychological and physical recovery for stroke survivor. It was two group experimental design study, this protocol is designed for stroke survivor, 3-6 months after the onset. Peermentors were consisted of outpatients who is stroke survivor in different recovery levels, at least 2 year after the onset. Peermentors received education about how to support and mentor participants of the program emotionally, appraisally, and informationally and how to run the program. Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form-Korea Version(GDSSF-K) is used to measure psychological factor, Stroke Impact Scale(SIS) is used to measure recovery level of patient, and for physical factor Upper Extremity Function Test for the Elderly(TEMPA) was used. A researcher who is interested in the peer mentor program needs to find more effective applying method based on be offered method in this study for helping recovery after stroke.
