  • This paper surveys a number of remotely operated recovery techniques and their recent applications in the removal of the toxic liquid from sunken ships, and suggests the appropriate recovery technique for our ocean environment, especially, in view of its cost and efficiency. Authors also give the technical requirements for the suggested remotely operated recovery system and the basic design result which is well-matched with such requirements.

  • Liquid-liquid membrane contactor (LLMC), a device that exchanges dissolved gas molecules between the two sides of a hydrophobic membrane through membrane pores, can be employed to extract ammoniacal nitrogen from a feed solution, which is transported across the membrane and accumulated in a stripping solution. This LLMC process offers the promise of improving the sustainability of the global nitrogen cycle by cost-effectively recovering ammonia from wastewater. Despite recent technological advances in LLMC processes, a comprehensive review of their feasibility for ammonia recovery is rarely found in the literature. Our paper aims to close this knowledge gap, and in addition to analyze the challenges and provide potential solutions for improvement. We begin with discussions on the operational principles of the LLMC process for ammonia recovery and membrane types and membrane configurations commonly used in the process. We then assess the performance of the process by reviewing publications that demonstrate its practical application. Challenges involved in the implementation of the LLMC process, such as membrane fouling, membrane wetting, and chemical requirements, are presented, along with discussions on potential strategies to address each. These strategies, including membrane modification, hybrid process design, and process optimization based on cost-benefit analysis, guide the reader to identify key areas of future research and development.

A Theoretical Study of Service Recovery Strategies (서비스실패 회복을 위한 복합적 보상 믹스 연구 : 재서비스와 보상적 할인을 중심으로)

  • Designing cost-effective service recovery strategies mix has been recognized one of important issues by both service researchers and practitioners. In spite of the rising interest in them, there has been scarce studies on them. In this paper, we try to find cost-effective service recovery strategies mix via game-theoretic modeling. Especially, we focus on the possible incentives such as voucher type reward and service re-performance which have different cost structure. We investigated three questions about the topics as follows:(1) Should the service firm use the possible incentive scheme such as voucher and service re-performance for service recovery?, (2) How much voucher and service re-performance is adequate for service recovery under diverse service failure severity level?, (3) How much voucher and service re-performance is adequate for service recovery under diverse threshold level to make the customer repurchase? The results are as follows:(1) The use of both voucher and service re-performance for service recovery results in greater surplus for the service firm. (2) The higher gets the service failure severity level, the higher total incentives are required in the equilibrium. As service failure severity level gets higher, higher level of discount might be more useful to the service firm. However, service re-performance should be cut down above some critical level of service failure severity in the equilibrium. (3) The higher gets the threshold level to make the customer repurchase, the higher incentives are required in the equilibrium, and the higher portion of voucher incentive is required relative to that of service re-performance in the equilibrium.

Synthesis of Needle-Like Aragonite Crystals in the Presence of Magnesium Chloride and Their Application in Papermaking

  • PCC (precipitated calcium carbonate) and ground calcium carbonate have been widely used in alkaline papermaking. Unfortunately, although increasing filler level in papers can improve the paper properties such as brightness, opacity, stiffness gloss, smoothness, porosity, and printability, as well as decrease cost, some strength of the paper is negatively affected. In this research, needle-like aragonite was synthesized using $Ca(OH)_2$ and $CO_2$ as reactants in the presence of $MgCl_2$ and characterized with scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The physical and optical properties of the paper handsheets containing these needle-like aragonite fillers were evaluated. Results indicated that tensile strength, Z-direction tensile strength and folding endurance of the paper were improved by the needle-like aragonite crystals compared to the paper using commercial PCC (precipitated calcium carbonate) as filler. The stiffness of the paper handsheet on the machine direction was increased, but no evident difference in the cross direction was found. The improvement of paper strength mainly resulted from the twining effect between the aragonite whiskers and paper fibers. The optical properties of the paper were slightly decreased with the use of the needle-like aragonites compared to commercial PCC. These results suggest that paper cost can be decreased by increasing the content of needle-like aragonite filler while paper strength will not be decreased compared to PCC filler.

A Multi-objective Optimization Approach to Workflow Scheduling in Clouds Considering Fault Recovery

  • Workflow scheduling is one of the challenging problems in cloud computing, especially when service reliability is considered. To improve cloud service reliability, fault tolerance techniques such as fault recovery can be employed. Practically, fault recovery has impact on the performance of workflow scheduling. Such impact deserves detailed research. Only few research works on workflow scheduling consider fault recovery and its impact. In this paper, we investigate the problem of workflow scheduling in clouds, considering the probability that cloud resources may fail during execution. We formulate this problem as a multi-objective optimization model. The first optimization objective is to minimize the overall completion time and the second one is to minimize the overall execution cost. Based on the proposed optimization model, we develop a heuristic-based algorithm called Min-min based time and cost tradeoff (MTCT). We perform extensive simulations with four different real world scientific workflows to verify the validity of the proposed model and evaluate the performance of our algorithm. The results show that, as expected, fault recovery has significant impact on the two performance criteria, and the proposed MTCT algorithm is useful for real life workflow scheduling when both of the two optimization objectives are considered.

Airline Disruption Management Using Ant Colony Optimization Algorithm with Re-timing Strategy (항공사 비정상 운항 복구를 위한 리-타이밍 전략과 개미군집최적화 알고리즘 적용)

  • Airline schedules are highly dependent on various factors of uncertainties such as unfavorable weather conditions, mechanical problems, natural disaster, airport congestion, and strikes. If the schedules are not properly managed to cope with such disturbances, the operational cost and performance are severely affected by the delays, cancelations, and so forth. This is described as a disruption. When the disruption occurs, the airline requires the feasible recovery plan returning to the normal operations in a timely manner so as to minimize the cost and impact of disruptions. In this research, an Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm with re-timing strategy is developed to solve the recovery problem for both aircraft and passenger. The problem consists of creating new aircraft routes and passenger itineraries to produce a feasible schedule during a recovery period. The suggested algorithm is based on an existing ACO algorithm that aims to reflect all the downstream effects by considering the passenger recovery cost as a part of the objective function value. This algorithm is complemented by re-timing strategy to effectively manage the disrupted passengers by allowing delays even on some of undisrupted flights. The delays no more than 15 minutes are accepted, which does not influence on the on-time performance of the airlines. The suggested method is tested on the real data sets from 2009 ROADEF Challenge, and the computational results are compared with the existing ones on the same data sets. The method generates the solution for most of problem set in 10 minutes, and the result generated by re-timing strategy is discussed for its impact.

A Study on Bacterial Leaching of Low-Grade Copper Mineral(V) (저품위 동광석의 세균침출에 관한 연구 5)

  • It was convinced that with a relatively small capital investment and with a low operating cost, appreciable amounts of cement copper could be produced from low-grade minerals by the application of a bacterial leaching method. For the recovery of cement copper from the impure pregnant solution, direct precipitation of copper with tin plates by a bacterial leaching method was feasible. The results obtained were as follows: 1)In order to remove the cement copper from the reducing metal, aeration and agitation method were more effective and economic than shaking method. 2)The rate of copper recovery from the pregnant solution was accerelated according to increasing quantities of reducing metal. However, the excess of reducing metal reduced the grade of cement copper. 3)Among the comparative experiments of copper recovery at each reaction temperature of $10^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, and $30^{\circ}C$, the recovery rate of copper at $30^{\circ}C$from the pregnant solution was highest. 4)Direct cementation method on iron-containing metal was an excellent method for the recovery of cement copper in bacterial leaching.

Treatability Prediction Method for Nanofiltration Systems in Drinking Water Treatments (정수처리에 이용되는 나노여과막시스템의 성능예측방법 확립)

  • This research is conducted to develop predictable method of real scale nanofiltration treatability with small scale nanofiltration experiments. As a result of comparing calculated values with measured values, they are in a good agreement for the concentrations in filtered water and concentrated water. The results of that are not affected by change of system recovery from 20% to 95%. The proposed method is produced using constant recovery of elements, that is, no considering the pressure change. we can predict filtrated flux and contaminant concentrations with the method. The method has the following steps. (1) Calculate recovery of each element with water quality level after fixing recovery elements, (2) Predict system recovery with recovery of elements in 1, 2, 3, and 4 banks, (3) Run small scale nanofiltration experiments in predicted water quality and (4) Simulate large scale nanofiltration system for forecasting actual water quality. As the cost for nanofiltration pretest will reduced if we use the proposed method, it will be a promising method for introducing nanofiltration to supply safe drinking water.

  • Phosphorus (P) is a limited, essential, and irreplaceable nutrient for the biological activity of all the living organisms. Sewage sludge ash (SSA) is one of the most important secondary P resources due to its high P content. The SSA has been intensively investigated to recover P by wet chemicals (acid or alkali). Even though $H_2SO_4$ was mainly used to extract P because of its low cost and accessibility, the formation of $CaSO_4$ (gypsum) hinders its use. Heavy metals in the SSA also cause a significant problem in P recovery since fertilizer needs to meet government standards for human health. Therefore, P recovery process with selective heavy metal removal needs to be developed. In this paper some of the most advanced P recovery processes have been introduced and discussed their technical characteristics. The results showed that further research is needed to identify the chemical mechanisms of P transformation in the recovery process and to increase P recovery efficiency and the yields.

  • Active and therapeutic sport recovery is becoming a popular and important component in approving performance for pro and recreational athletes alike. It is also helping in the realm of injury prevention. In the search of finding modalities that are widely effective, natural, and safe, acupuncture is a viable and cost-effective treatment for helping athletes achieve this goal. More direct related research is needed, but testimonials from pro athletes and the body of research that currently exists provides powerful evidence on acupunctures ability to help with enhancing recovery. Specializing in acupuncture and exercise science, Chris integrates acupuncture into musculoskeletal rehabilitation therapy or fitness training for pain modulation, speedy recovery, and enhanced performance. Clients can choose to focus on one-on-one corrective exercise therapy, manual and massage therapy, or acupuncture. However, for best results, Chris recommends all three. Other modalities that he uses in therapy are acu-taping, herbal therapy, nutrition supplementation, cupping, guasha, and stretching techniques.
