  • Several major land reclamation projects such as the Inchon International Airport construction, Songdo New City construction, LNG Tank and LPG storage construction are underway along the coastal line of Inchon in Korea. This study was carried out to investigate the feasible use of waste lime in the land reclamation projects. Waste lime (hydrated lime) used in this study is produced as a by-product in the manufacturing process of $Na_2CO_3$ from local chemical factory in Inchon. This study presents the characteristics of bearing capacity and settlement on the ground formed by layers of waste lime and dredged soil. From the laboratory and in-situ plate load test, the ultimate bearing capacity by in-situ test was 1.25~1.37 times higher than that of the theoretical ultimate bearing capacity. Based on the settlement analysis by Magset- II, the total settlement of layered ground steadly increased up to the ratio of waste lime depth 0.2 and therefore rapidly increased with the increase of waste lime depth. The results of the present study indicate that the ratio of waste lime depth for reclamation work is about 0.2.

  • This paper describes the ecological structure and function of riparian zone, and their historical changes with land-use. The riparian zone consists of valley floor landform and riparian vegetation. The functions discussed are attenuation of sunlight energy, input of leaves and needles, contribution of woody debris to streams, and retention of flowing material out of transport. These primary functions directly or indirectly influence water and sediment qualities of streams, bars and floodplains, and thereby aquatic biota. Temporal changes in a hydrological system and riparian ecosystem were examined with reference to land-use conversin in order to understand the linkages between these two systems in Toikanbetsu River. The influences of channelization and land-use on discharge of suspended sediment and wetland vegetation was also investigated in Kushiro Marsh. These two examples suggested that the ecological functions of riparian zone have been degraded as flood control and reclamation works have expanded in the past twenty years The author proposes river restoration planning by preserving or creating landscape elements based on the concepts of sustaining physical and ecological linkages.

  • 1. For the purpose of analyzing the plan of new reclamation project and its evaluation, actual studies for the existing polders are required. 2. The variations of the salt content of soil, yields and staus of its plantation have been studied for six areas reclaimed in relatively recent years, including Kangwha, Daechon, Chopo, Eushin, Kwangyang and Chinkyo. 3. The annual yields from the project were only 52 percent in the first year as compared with kilograms per 10 a. in the Hachirogata polder in Japan. 4. Such a low productivity in the existing polders in Korea is chiefly by the high ground water table, unfavourable conditions of subdrainage in the root zone, and saline damages of existing high salt content. That is because the depth of drainage ditches is too shallow and layout distance between every drainage ditches is also too long. 5. In order to overcom such a uncertiainties, the drainagedistance suitable for these areas has been Calculated by using the Donnans formula. Applying to the formula, drainage facilities are so densie that land use capability may be decreased. 6. For the purpose of ensuring the effective desalinization and high land use capability, feasible interval to establish the culvert has been studied in accordance with both formulas of Donnan and Hoogan. 7. In order to accomplish the early desalinization in both areas of new reclamation or existing polders, the problems of internal drainages should be resolved. for this puprose in addition to the endeavour of the personnels actually engaged in such works. The actual support of the related agencies for financial assitance is required.

  • North Korea reported that tideland reclamation projects had been successfully constructed and/or under construction during the period of the third development scheme(1987∼1993), which were 28,400ha in 9 project areas: 8 projects along the western coast and one in the eastern coast. In this study eight projects located in western coast were investigated in order to confirm the detail of works, construction stages and difference from our project formulation methods using the topographic maps published in different years and the recent sattelite image data especially Lansat TM and SPOT PN. Intensity-hue-saturation (IHS) method was adopted to merge two sattelite data for the image enhancement of remote sensing. Construction stages of sea-dikes, land consolidation for paddy and salt pan, reservoir for irrigation and desalinization and the present land use were investigated and estimated the acreage of the development areas. The total gross project areas of 38,105 ha: 16,555 ha completed for paddy or salt pan, 16,826 ha under construction, and 4,724 ha under planning were confirmed, although the area of 27,100 ha in 8 projects were reported to be completed or ongoing on the bimonthly journal of N. Korean Trend published in 1994.

  • This paper examines the impact of large-scale tidal flat reclamations on environment by analyzing land use change, ocean cultivation, water quality, sea biota and climate in Shiwha, Sosan and Saemankeum districts. The data used in this paper include Landsat TM images and documents related to population, industry, water quality, sea biota and climate at the time of the pre- and post-reclamation. Many times of field reclamations contribute to the creatation of newly available land for urban and industrial development, but cause environmental degradation significantly. The increase of pollution load and the change of coastal ecology, also cause some changes of climatic element such as relative humidity. As tidal flats were reduced, the area of ocean cultivation and the population of fishing industries were decreased. Conceming the sustainable development. it is necessary to carry out a careful environmental impact assessment accumulating monitoring environmental data continuously by using GIS techniques.

  • Dredging and land reclamation works has actively carried out for the efficient use of land and secure of agricultural and industrial site. During the reclamation, a portion of landfills are lost from the desired location due to a variety of causes. However, these causes has been rarely studied, and water flow velocity has a great influence on the movement of landfills. For the economical and efficient reclamation, it is important to predict the movement of landfills in water. In this paper, an experimental study was carried out to investigate the deposition distance according to the flow velocity and soil grain size. We have made a large open-channel apparatus that can reproduce a laminar flow, and the deposition test was carried out on the four grain size (0.638, 1.425, 3.375, 7.125 mm) and four flow velocity (0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.67 m/s) with high definition video recording. As a results, average deposition distance increased with the flow velocity, and its relationship is shown linearly. For the grain size, the average deposition distance were drastically increased as the grain size becomes smaller.

  • The land utilization of Korea composed about 22.7% of arable land, 66.9% of forest land and 10.4% for the rest like a house site, road, and lake etc. The ratio of arable land is too small as compared with forest land which is occuping two-thirds of Korea. The expansion of arable land by the reclamation will solve the food problems for increasing populations. First, we have to know the exact extents and distribution of reclaimable land but the reported total extent of reclaimable land in Korea is variable according to the authority which carried out the soil survey. The different reported data of reclaimable land is owing to the method and criteria of soil survey. 840,522ha in Land Capability Survey of the Farm Land Improvement Association and 321,203ha in the Forest Land Survey by the Office of Forest was reported but the Office of Rural Development said that total reclaimable land was 1,400,540ha including grazing and fruit land. To assume the extent of reclaimable land, the soil survey method and criteria of soil survey should be considered. It can be considered that the main reasons of less in extent of reclaimable land in the other authorities than the Office of Rural Development is due to the following. The grazing land and the fruits land are not included by the Farm Land Improvement Association and only relative forest is considered by the Office of Forest. The main purpose of soil survey carried out by the Office of Rural Development is to utilize land of Korea at most. The soil characteristics and potential productivity are considered in soil survey and the reported data was based on reconnaissance soil survey. The more accurate data will be find out by the end of 1979 when the detailed soil survey will be done. In selection of cropping system and management, the soil condition should be considered, because the soil characteristics of reslaimed land is less fertile than the arable lands.

  • Restoration of min-impacted arable land is often performed through stabilization of trace elements by amendment treatment combined with (clean) soil covering on the surface. Recently, soil loss problem from sloping remediated agricultural lands has risen as an emerging concern. In this study, efficacy of aggregation formation was assessed by single and binary treatments of four potential amendments (bentonite, lime, organic matter, and steel slag) applied on three cover soils having different clay contents (9.4, 14.7, and 21.2% for A, B, and C soils respectively). In results of single treatments, 5% organic matter for A soil and 5% lime for B and C soils were found most effective for the aggregation formation compared to the respective controls (without amendments). Among nine binary treatments, 3% organic matter + 1% lime for A soil and 1% organic matter + 3% lime for both B and C soils led to the highest formation of aggregation (30.4, 25.0, and 36.5% for A, B, and C soils). For a site-application, the soil erodibility difference between the cover soils (0.045, 0.051, and 0.054 for A, B, and C soils, respectively) and the national average of arable land (0.032) was assumed to be compensated by amendment addition, which is equivalent to 29.1% aggregation formation. To achieve the aggregation goal, 5% lime for A and B soils and 3% lime for C soil were best in the consideration of benefit/cost, thereby effectively and economically reducing soil loss from sloping remediation site. Soil alkalinity induced by lime treatment was not considered in this work.

  • This paper deals with the historical geography of land-use and agriculture along the Lower Nam-River floodplains. The reclamation process of the river floodplains, the cultivation methods on the reclaimed lands, and the land-use patterns and processes are investigated. The Nam River, one of the major tributaries of the Nakdong River, flows through the boundary between Ham-An and Eu-Ryong Guns. Larger floodplains are located in Ham-An Gun. The floodplains of Ham-An Gun have been surveyed intensively in this study. In South Korea, the alluvial plains, mostly located along the river valleys, have been reclaimed to provide fertile agricultural lands. Those along the upper river valleys were reclaimed before those along the lower river valleys. The flood-plains of Han-An Gun were reclaimed to be the largest agricultural lands of the Gun. The natural levees along the Lower Nam-River Valley were identified before the reclamation processes but now hardly identified. Relatively larger floodplains are located along the tributary streams of the Nam River. Often there are low-lying back swamps between the natural levees and the hills/mountains that rise above the floodplains. The back swamps, called 'natural bog lands' in this region, have been reduced in size and in number through reclamation for the purpose of agricultural and industrial land-uses. Now about ten 'natural bog lands' are found in the Ham-An floodplains, and some of them are being reclaimed for the industrial land-use. This study suggests the emergent need of conservation for the remaining 'natural bog lands' in terms of ecology. Seven agricultural fields of large size, originated from the Nam-River floodplains, are identified in this study: Kun(큰들), Chung-Am(정암들), Chang-chi(장지들), Baek-San(백산들), Ha-Ki(하기들), Gu-Hae(구혜들), and Chang-Po(장포들) fields. The Kun field was reclaimed during the Japanese control and the Gu-Hae, in the 1950s. All of those except the above two fields were reclaimed after the mid-1960s. The Nam-River Dam in Chinju, completed in 1969, contributed the reclamation processes along the Lower Nam-River floodplains. The rice acreage of the region has been reduced slowly since 1970 but the rice production of the region has been relatively stable (Table 4). Rice culture had been the most important agriculture on the reclaimed lands for decades before the greenhouse vegetable cultivation became more important in the 1980s. Among the vegetables cultivated in the greenhouse, the watermelon is the dominantly leading one. Watermelons are usually harvested two or three times in a year though it is possible to harvest four times in one year. The rotation of watermelons and rice is common in the region. It is known the physical conditions of the Nam-River floodplains in Ham-An Gun is the most suitable for watermelon cultivation in South Korea.

  • A long-term field experiment of the selected stabilization methods(Cover system, full range and upper range treatment) was conducted to reduce the heavy metal mobility in farmland soil which was contaminated by heavy metals around abandoned mine site. Field experiments were established on the contaminated farmland with the wooden plate and filled with treated soil, which was mixed with lime stone and steel reforming slag except on control plot. Soil samples were collected and analyzed during the experiment period(about 4 months) after the installation of the plots. Field demonstration experiments results showed that the cover system and the full range treatment of the selected stabilization methods applied to the application ratio of lime stone 5% and steel refining slag 2% were effective for immobilizing heavy metal components in contaminated farmland soil.
