  • This paper presents a simple thermo-physical model of reciprocating compressors for household refrigerator-freezers. The compressor model has been developed based on thermodynamic principles and large data sets from the compressor calorimeter tests. The input data are compressor geometry (displacement and clearance volume), compressor speed, suction pressure and temperature, discharge pressure, and ambient temperature. The model can estimate mass flow rate and compressor power consumption within 3.0% accuracy, which is not much larger than measurement errors associated with calorimeter testing under ideal conditions.

  • A reciprocating compressor unit with variable rotating speed driven by BLDC motor is mounted Inside hermetic chamber on an internal suspension composed of 4 roil springs and a discharge pipe. A method for predicting the dynamic behavior of compressor body is required for a reduction of transmitted vibrations. The mechanical characteristics of spring and discharge pipe stiffness properties have been obtained from experimental tests and mass moment of inertia of the compressor body iron CAD. To confirm the vibration model for the compressor body, free vibration analyses are performed with theoretical and experimental methods. results for analytical investigations on the dynamic behavior of the compressor body and the transmitted forces to the hermetic chamber through the suspension elements are Presented.

  • Numerical simulations for scroll, two-stage twin rotary, and two-cylinder reciprocating compressors have been carried out to understand the effectiveness of each type compressor for heat pump water heater application using $CO_2$ as refrigerant. For suction pressure of 3.5 MPa and discharge pressure of 9 MPa, clearance volume ratio of the reciprocating compressor needs to be about 5% or less to have the volumetric efficiency comparable to that of the scroll compressor with tip clearance of $5\;{\mu}m$. Volumetric efficiency of the scroll compressor is quite sensitive to tip clearance. Adiabatic efficiency of the twin rotary compressor was calculated to be the lowest among the three types, and the most severe drawback of the $CO_2$ scroll compressor was a significant increase in the mechanical loss at the thrust surface supporting the orbiting scroll member. While the scroll compressor showed very smooth torque load variation, peak-to-peak torque variations of the twin rotary and two-cylinder reciprocating compressors were about 50% and 250%, respectively.

  • Refrigeration and air-conditioning compressors used in home appliances, including refrigerators and air conditioners, are typically hermetic-type reciprocating compressors. Because the shell is sealed by welding, it should be designed to have a semi-permanent life. The energy consumption of a hermetic-type reciprocating compressor is low, but because it operates continuously to maintain a constant temperature inside the refrigerator, it has a certain base load. In this type of compressor, the driving motor operates at a high speed (about 3,000 - 3,600 rpm), which causes valve damage, friction, wear, and high-frequency noise. Many studies have been conducted to solve these problems. To enhance the reliability and efficiency of the reciprocating compressor, the design conditions and operating environment of journal bearings should be considered. Dynamic behavior analysis should be carried out in terms of the discharge pressure. The results showed that the load (discharge pressure) increases in the forward lookup zone and decreases in the backward lookup zone. When the revolution speed is increased, the maximum load decreases in the region where the maximum load operates.

  • Pulsation is an inherent phenomenon in reciprocating compressors. It interacts with piping to cause vibrations and performance problems. Indiscriminately connecting to a compressor can be dangerous and cost money in the form of broken equipment and piping, poor performance, inaccurate metering, unwanted vibration, and sometimes noise. Piping connected to a compressor can materially affect the performance and response. To minimize these detrimental effects, reciprocating compressor system should be equipped by pulsation suppression system. This study discusses pressure pulsation phenomena occurred in a reciprocating compressor system. An experiment applied air compressor unit, as pulsating pressure generator, has been done. The compressor was connected sequentially to a snubber model and pressure tank. Sensor probes were placed on the inlet and outlet pipes of snubber. Compressor was driven by a motor controlled by a frequency regulator. The experiment was conducted by adjusting the regulator at 40Hz. General information about an internal gas flow can be achieved by numerical analysis approach. Information of the velocity, pressure and turbulence kinetic energy distribution are presented in this paper. Based on this result, the design improvement might be done.

  • The Reciprocating compressor are widely used in the refrigeration field for its simplicity in principle and high efficiency. In this work, we developed a mathematical model of a reciprocating compressor. The suction and discharge valves are modeled by the spring-mass-damper systems. The working fluid flow is derived from unsteady Bernoulli's equation. With the design parameters, the valve motions and pressure fluctuations are studied numerically and experimentally.

  • A complex valve dynamic analysis has been performed with a high Pressure reciprocating gas compressor. Valve dynamic equations, which take into account the flow continuity and cylinder pressure fluctuation, have been derived. Flow coefficients of valves has been analyzed, using CFD models. Results have shown that both of the suction and discharge values behave favorably without any fluttering motions.

  • In this paper, a study on the dynamic behavior and lubrication characteristics of a reciprocating compression mechanism used in small refrigeration compressor is performed. In the problem formulation of the compressor dynamics, the viscous frictional force between piston and cylinder wall is considered in order to determine the coupled dynamic behaviors of piston and crankshaft. The solutions of the equations of motion of the reciprocating mechanism along with the time dependent Reynolds equations for the lubricating film between piston and cylinder wall and oil films of the journal bearings are obtained simultaneously. The hydrodynamic forces of journal bearings are calculated using finite bearing model and Gumbel boundary condition. And, a Newton-Raphson procedure was employed in solving the nonlinear equations of piston and crankshaft. The results explored the effects of design parameters on the stability and lubrication characteristics of the compression mechanism.

  • Due to environmental issues, the development of low energy consumption products has become one of the main topics in the home appliance industry. The energy consumption of a refrigerator depends on the efficiency of its compressor as well as on the refrigerator cycle design, such as the capacity modulation. In this study, a dual capacity, i.e., two-step capacity modulation (TCM), reciprocating compressor is developed. In a TCM compressor, capacity modulation is achieved by changing the dead volume in the cylinder. Instead of a concentric sleeve, an eccentric sleeve, a key, and a spring are used to change the dead volume for the clockwise and counterclockwise rotation of a motor. When the compressor changes its operating mode from full capacity to partial capacity or in opposite direction, the key may collide with the eccentric sleeve. The structural reliability and mode change reliability were confirmed by analysis and experiment.
