Average Dietary Energy Intake does not Increase as BMI Increased in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Data of Korea

  • Although the idea that obese people consume higher calorie diets is widely accepted, many dietary surveys have shown that obese people do NOT consume larger amounts of energy. We had an opportunity to study the relationship between calorie intake and obesity in Korea from the data contained in the '98 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of Korea. The survey was executed nationwide for two months - from Nov. 1 to Dec.30 in 1998. The survey included 10,876 (aged >10 years) subjects of whom 9,771 underwent health examinations. Surveyors visited each household and checked health status, measured anthropometry and blood pressures, collected blood and urine samples, and interviewed from the health questionnaires. Well-trained dietitians evaluated the food consumption of 11,525 subjects over the age of 1 year with the 24-hour recall method. The number of subjects from whom a complete health examination and food consumption information was obtained was 8,004. Subjects were classified by BMI (< 20, 20-22, 22-24, 24-26, 26-28, 28 $\leq$) and into newly diagnosed patients with DM (FBS $\geq$ 126 mg/㎗), hypertension (SBP $\geq$ 140 mmHg or DBP $\geq$ 90 mmHg) and hyperlipidemia (Total cholesterol $\geq$ 220 mg/㎗ or TG $\geq$ 200 mg/㎗). Our main results were as following:1) their average energy intake was 2,029.6 $\pm$ 908.5 ㎉ and BMI is 22.6 $\pm$ 3.4 kg/$m^2$;2) a comparison of nutrient intakes by BMI level did not show a significant difference of energy intake even though BMI increased (BMI, < 20: 1,999 ㎉ ∼ 28 $\leq$: 2,028 ㎉);and 3) Even in newly diagnosed patients with diabetes, hypertension or hyperlipidemia, their energy consumption was not significantly increased as BMI increased (from BMI 20). There are several possible explanations for these results:1) Reduced physical activity caused the weight of obese people to increase even with the same energy intake;2) people underreported their energy consumption;or, people intentionally reduced their energy consumption due to self-image regarding their obesity. We might also hypothesize that there is a metabolic problem conceiving obese people, because calorie intake was not higher in obese people than in non-obese people in Korea. Further research is necessary for re-evaluating these current conclusions.

고등학생의 채소.과일류 섭취습관과 식이섬유소 섭취실태에 관한 연구 - 대구 일부지역 고등학생을 중심으로 - (A Study on Vegetable & Fruit Eating Habits and Dietary Fiber Intake of High School Students - focusing on high school students in Daegu -)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to provide the nutritional education data of the fruit and vegetable eating habits and dietary fiber intake of male and female high school students in the Daegu area. Methods: A survey was conducted on 300 male/female students from four general high schools in the City of Daegu, and the survey included questions ongeneral characteristics, dietary habits, eating behavior patterns and dietary intake. A 24-hour recall method was used for the dietary intake, and the surveyed dietary intake information was analyzed using the Computer Aided Nutritional analysis program (CAN 3.0)--dietary fiber intake, in particular. The data was analyzed using the SPSS window 12.0 program. Results: The average ages of boys and girls were 16.8- and 15.6-years old, respectively. A classification based on BMI showed the following: the low-weight student group was comprised of 10.3% boys and 31.6% girls; the normal-weight group 68.4% boys and 67.5% girls; and the overweight group 21.3% boys and 0.9% girls, whereby showing a significant difference between boys and girls. Vegetable intake showed the following: the ratio of the response of 'taking it once a day' was more than 70%, which showed the low frequency of fruit intake; the ratio of 'taking it more than five times a week' was 53.0% for boys and 68.4% for girls, which showed a higher intake frequency for girls over boys; and the daily dietary fiber per 1,000kcal was 7.1g for boys and 8.2g for girls, whereby showing a significant difference between boys and girls. The meals that contributed most to dietary fiber intake were the school meals, whereas the dietary fiber intake rate through breakfast was the lowest among the three daily meals. The food groups that contributed to dietary fiber intake were vegetable, grains and flavoring matters for boys and vegetable, grains and fruits for girls. Conclusions: In order to increase the daily dietary intake for growing adolescents, who are in an important stage for building the foundation of health, it's recommended that, in addition to the supplement for insufficient dietary fiber through a regular breakfast consisting of high dietary fiber content foods, nutrition-related education about the effects of dietary fiber on the human body be conducted.

  • 대규모 무선센서네트워크 시스템을 안정적으로 운영하기 위해서는 네트워크를 구성하는 각 링크의 링크 품질(link quality)을 기반으로 네트워크를 구성하는 것이 필요하다. 두 노드 사이의 링크 품질은 해당 링크를 포함하는 모든 경로의 품질에 영향을 준다. 따라서 데이터 전송을 위한 경로 수립 과정에서 링크의 품질을 정확히 파악하는 것이 매우 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 대규모 무선센서네트워크를 구성하고, 운영에 들어가기까지 필요한 시간 및 에너지 소비를 최소화하기 위하여 통신 칩에서 제공하는 LQI(Link Quality Indication)와 RSSI(Received Signal Strength Indication)를 동시에 활용하여 각 링크의 링크 품질을 평가할 수 있는 HLQM(Hybrid Link Quality Metric)을 제안한다. HLQM을 사용하여 링크 품질을 평가하면, 다수의 패킷 전송과정을 거친 후 얻어진 결과를 링크 품질 평가에 다시 이용하는 기존의 방법들이 가지는 네트워크를 구성하고 운영에 들어가기까지 많은 set-up time과 비용이 소요되는 문제점과 LQI 또는 RSSI를 각 각 사용하는 방법들이 가지는 문제점도 개선되어 보다 효율적으로 링크 품질을 평가할 수 있게 된다. 제안된 방법의 타당성과 효율성을 검정하기 위하여 실제 다수의 메시지 전송에서 얻어진 PDR과 비교하는 실험을 수행하였다. 실험의 결과에서 HLQM을 사용하면 다른 메트릭을 사용하여 얻어진 결과에 비해 정확도, 재현율 및 일치율이 상대적으로 우수하다는 것을 확인하였다.

대전지역 일부 대학생의 영양소 섭취상태 식사의 질과 식습관에 있어서 남녀의 차이에 관한 연구 (The Comparison in Daily Intake of Nutrients, Quality of Diets and Dietary Habits between Male and Female College Students in Daejeon)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the differences in daily nutrient intakes, dietary habits and nutrition knowledge between male and female college students. Male undergraduate students 004 subjects) and female undergraduate students (229 subjects) , enrolled at H University in Daejeon, were recruited for this study. The mean age of the subjects was 22.9 year in male and 20.4 year in female students. Daily intakes of energy and nutrients were calculated from the records of one day of dietary food intakes by 24-hour recall method, and general information, dietary habits and attitudes, food intake frequency and food preferences and knowledge for food and nutrition were surveyed through a questionnaire. About $70.1\%$ of male and $66.1\%$ of female students were in the normal range of BMI (18.5 - 23), and $25.2\%$ of male students were over-weighted in contrast to $27.7\%$ of female students were underweight. Males and females were taking $77.2\%$ and $77.9\%$ of RDA for energy, respectively, and $54.8\%$ of male and $48.0\%$ of female students were taking energy under $75\%$ of RDA. Many of them showed deficient intakes of calcium, iron, vitamin A and riboflavin. Average of MAR was 0.75 in male and 0.72 in female students. NAR for calcium, iron, vitamin A and riboflavin in male students were 0.55, 0.69,0.75 and 0.61, respectively, compared to 0.53, 0.51, 0.70 and 0.67 in female students. The nutrients, which have INQ less than 1, were calcium and riboflavin in male, compared to calcium, iron, and riboflavin in female students. There were no gender differences in meal regularity and meal skipping rates, but female students showed higher rates of skipping dinner than males (p < 0.001) About $50.8\%$ of female students were ingesting snacks 1 - 2 time/day, compared to $27.1\%$ of male students. For the food intake frequency, fruit group was significantly eating more for female than male students (p< 0.001) Though female students got higher scores for nutritional knowledge test (p < 0.001) than male students, they did not show better dietary habits or dietary attitudes than male students actually. Therefore, a more active and actual education program accustomed to the different genders and ages with focus on real changing of dietary behaviors needs to be developed and run in schools and local departments.

한국 여자의 연령별 골밀도에 영향을 미치는 영양요인 분석 (Nutritional Factors Related to Bone Mineral Density in the Different Age Groups of Korean Women)

  • Nutritional factors affecting bone mineral density (BMD) in the different age groups of Korean women were investigated to obtain baseline data for maintaining bone health. Information on diet and anthropometry were collected in 80 elementary school children (height 127.2 cm, weight 27.3 kg), 84 high school students (height 161.6 cm, weight 52.4 kg), 100 adults aged 25 to 35 years (height 159.4 cm, weight 52.7 kg) and 120 elderly people over 60 years of age (height 150.9 cm, weight 55.6 kg). Data for nutrient intake were obtained by 24-hour recall method. BMDs of lumbar spine (L$_2$-L$_4$) and femoral neck were measured by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. The relationship between BMD of femoral neck and nutritional factors were analyzed. The average BMD of femoral neck for females was 0.61 g/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in children, 0.88 g/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in adolescents, 0.90 g/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in adults, 0.64 g/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in elderly people. Among the adult subjects, 11.0% was classified as osteopenia in the femoral neck. For the elderly, the prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis were 34.2% and 47.5% of the subjects. It was shown the intake of energy, protein, plant protein, animal protein, fat, carbohydrate, Ca, P, Fe, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin C, carbohydrate energy percent and fat energy percent influenced bone health status in all age groups. In the MAR on bone health status, children, adult and elderly subjects were significantly different among groups classified by bone health status and the MAR of the groups with good in bone health was higher. The RDA percent of each nutrient was influence factor on BMD. Nutrient intake of energy, protein, P, Fe, thiamin, niacin were lower BMD on below 75% of Korean RDA. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that several dietary factors were influence on BMD. MAR on femoral neck BMD of children and elderly subjects was the highest influence factor. Beyond this, the most influential dietary factors on BMD were the vitamin A, total Ca and vegetable Ca. The above results have confirmed that dietary factors influence BMD in various age groups. Energy, protein, Ca, P, Fe, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin C as well as MAR were important dietary factors influencing BMD. The results of this study revealed that people who received sufficient nutrients intake showed healthy bone status. The MAR mainly influenced the bone health status.

Development of a Korean Diet Score (KDS) and its application assessing adherence to Korean healthy diet based on the Korean Food Guide Wheels

  • The most critical point in the assessment of adherence to dietary guidelines is the development of a practical definition for adherence, such as a dietary pattern score. The purpose of this study was to develop the Korean Diet Score (KDS) based on the Korean Food Balance Wheel and to examine the association of KDS with various lifestyle characteristics and biochemical factors. The dietary data of 5,320 subjects from the 4th Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey were used for the final analysis. The food guide was composed of six food group categories; 'grain dishes', 'fish and meat dishes', 'vegetable dishes', 'fruits', 'milk' and 'oils and sugars'. Based on the recommended serving numbers for each group, the scores measuring adherence to this food guide were calculated from the dietary information from the 24-hour dietary recall questionnaire, and then its correlation with various characteristics was assessed. KDS was significantly associated with several clinical, lifestyle and socioeconomic factors as well as diagnosed disease history. The higher quintile group of KDS showed a significantly lower level in fasting blood glucose, systolic blood pressure, triglycerides, current smoking and drinking as well as higher leisure time activity, house income and education. Furthermore, the KDS quintile group of women was inversely associated with hypertension, osteoporosis and diabetes. A higher KDS quintile was characterized with a higher intake of several critical nutrients, such as Ca, Fe and vitamins as well as a desirable nutrition balance such as the ratio of macronutrients. Our results demonstrate that KDS is a beneficial tool in assessing the adherence to a healthy diet based on the Korean dietary guidelines. We suggest that KDS could be a useful indicator for evaluating the dietary balance of the Korean population.

Comparison of dietary food and nutrient intakes by supplement use in pregnant and lactating women in Seoul

  • This study was performed to compare the dietary food and nutrient intakes according to supplement use in pregnant and lactating women in Seoul. The subjects were composed of 201 pregnant and 104 lactating women, and their dietary food intake was assessed using the 24-h recall method. General information on demographic and socioeconomic factors, as well as health-related behaviors, including the use of dietary supplements, were collected. About 88% and 60% of the pregnant and lactating women took dietary supplements, respectively. The proportion of dietary supplements used was higher in pregnant women with a higher level of education. After adjusting for potential confounders, among the pregnant women, supplement users were found to consume 45% more vegetables, and those among the lactating women were found to consume 96% more beans and 58% more vegetables. The intakes of dietary fiber and ${\beta}$-carotene among supplement users were higher than those of non-users, by 23% and 39%, respectively. Among pregnant women, the proportion of women with an intake of vitamin C (from diet alone) below the estimated average requirements (EAR) was lower among supplement users [users (44%) vs. non-users (68%)], and the proportion of lactating women with intakes of iron (from diet alone) below the EAR was lower among supplement users [usesr (17%) vs. non-users (38%)]. These results suggest that among pregnant and lactating women, those who do not use dietary supplements tend to have a lower intake of healthy foods, such as beans and vegetables, as well as a lower intake of dietary fiber and ${\beta}$-carotene, which are abundant in these foods, and non-users are more likely than users to have inadequate intake of micro-nutrient such as vitamin C and iron.

ADL에 의한 도움필요 노인의 건강과 식생활관리 -경기지역 농촌노인을 중심으로- (The Health and Dietary management of Impaired elderly by ADL in Gyeonggi, Korea)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide information searching for health promotion, nutrition improvement, and health care of the impaired elderly by ADL(Activity of Daily Living) and IADL(Instrumental Activity of Daily Living). The subjects were divided into the Assistant Needed Group and No Assistant Needed Group for living in line with the responses of ADL(10 items like dressing, washing, move etc.) and IADL(10 items like housekeeping, using transportation, shopping, Phone call etc.). Survey was made for health behavior, health risk habit, dietary management status and diet intake by 24 hr-recall and questionnaire method. 242 subjects were collected in 12 cities or Gun districts in Gyeonggi Province, S. Korea. Survey was carried out by regional home extension workers using interview method. Statistical analyses were made using SAS (Version 8.1). Chi-Square Tests and General Linear Models. The subjects of impaired ADL elderly was 26.5% and it composed 30% of the total male and 22.2% of the total female. The demographic status of the impaired ADL elderly showed no difference from that of the normal elders, elementary school educated (73.4%), with spouse (43.8%) or with adult children(37.5%), using monthly living cost of 500-1,000 thousand won(35.9%). Mean age was 74.05 years compared to 72.25 years of normal elders. However, there was no significant difference from the normal and impaired ADL group, regular exercise(60.0%), with walking (90.0%), no-smoke(54.7%) and no-drink(48.4%). Kind of disease was not different from the one in impaired and normal group, with cardiovascular disease(32.3%), with diabetes mellitus(8.1%), joint lumbago neuralgia(32.3%) and osteoporosis(9.7%). Gastrointestinal complaints of the impaired ADL group were nausea(57.8%), chronic indigestion (23.4%), constipation (14,0%) and vomiting(3.7%). Sleeping time required for the impaired was longer than that for the normal group by 10hours(4.7%) or 8-10hours(20.3%), which consisted 1.7% and 16.6% respectively. Nutrient intake of the impaired ADL group was low compared to normal range elders: Energy(1260kca1), Protein(52.75g). There was gender difference in nutrient intake; the male impaired group showed no significant difference from the normal group but it was significantly lower in female impaired group. These results suggest that low quality of life and low economic status of the impaired ADL elderly require congregate meal in village hall to cover the lack of side dishe variety. And nutrition education program including community assistance would be required for the impaired ADL elderly together with the sufficient food and exercise practice. By operating nutrition education program, the impaired ADL elderly would maintain more enhanced quality of life and ameliorate the ADL capability.

이중 언어 기반 패러프레이즈 추출을 위한 피봇 차별화 방법 (Pivot Discrimination Approach for Paraphrase Extraction from Bilingual Corpus)

  • 패러프레이즈는 같은 의미를 다른 단어를 사용하여 표현한 것을 말한다. 패러프레이즈는 일상적인 언어생활에서도 흔히 관측되며 자연어처리 분야에서 다양하게 활용할 수 있다. 특히 최근에는 통계적 기계 번역 분야에서 데이터 부족 문제를 보완하여 번역 성능을 향상시키기 위해 패러프레이즈를 활용한 연구가 많다. 이중 언어 병렬 말뭉치를 이용하는 패러프레이즈 추출 과정에서는 일반적으로 다른 언어를 피봇으로 사용하기 때문에 단어 정렬 및 구 정렬 과정을 두 번 거친다. 따라서 단어 정렬의 오류가 패러프레이즈로 전파될 수 있다. 특히 한국어와 영어와 같이 언어의 구조적인 차이가 큰 경우에는 단어 정렬 오류가 더 심각하기 때문에 피봇 프레이즈부터 잘못 추출되는 경우가 많아진다. 이러한 문제를 보완하기 위해 본 논문에서는 패러프레이즈 추출 과정에서 피봇 프레이즈를 차별화하는 방안으로서 어휘, 품사 정보를 이용해 올바른 피봇 프레이즈에 더 높은 가중치를 부여하는 방법을 제안한다. 실험 결과, 제안하는 피봇 가중치 부여 방법을 기존의 패러프레이즈 추출 방법에 추가했을 때 패러프레이즈 추출 정확률과 재현율이 모두 향상됨을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한, 제안하는 방법을 통해 추출한 패러프레이즈를 한영 기계 번역 시스템에서 활용하였을 때 번역률이 향상됨을 확인할 수 있었다.

알츠하이머성 치매환자와 건강한 노인의 일화기억 이미지 비교 분석 (Analysis of the Mental Images in Episodic Memory with Comparison between the patients with Dementia of Alzheimer Type and Healthy Elderly People)

  • 공간, 시간적 환경정보를 함께 저장하는 일화기억(episodic memory)은 알츠하이머병에 의해 손상될 뿐만 아니라 일반 노화과정에서도 손상될 수 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 인지기능인 일화기억을 내적회상 기법을 사용하여 평가함으로써 초기 알츠하이머성 치매 환자의 일화기억을 분석하고 평가하는 것이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 사진이나 동영상처럼 뇌에 투사되는 피시험자 자신의 과거를 직접 회상한 이미지(the mental image)를 분석하는 새로운 방법을 사용하였다. 초기 알츠하이머성 치매환자3명, 경도 우울증 환자 1명, 대조를 위한 건강한 노인 2명에게 검사 당일로부터 하루, 일주일, 한달 전 그리고 원과거(remote)에 있었던 일을 회상하게 하였다. 회상된 이미지 안에서의 감정상태, 이미지의 색, 사건 발생 순서 등의 중점을 두고 피시험자의 응답을 분석하였다. 순행성기억(anterograde memory) 손상을 관찰하고자 피시험자에 그들이 검사 당시 재현한 모든 이미지를 검사 다음날 다시 상기하도록 요구하였다. 3명의 환자군 모두 회상한 이미지들 사건 발생순서에 맞게 정리하는데 실패하였다. 이들은 대조군과 같은 수의 이미지를 회상해 내었지만, 색이 선명하지 않고 사진과 같은 정적인 이미지를 회상하였다. 이러한 결과는 초기 치매환자가 최근기억(recent memory)을 화상 하는데 일차적으로 손상이 있을 시사하며, 또한 의미기억의 양적인 손상보다 질적 손상이 먼저 발생함을 보여주었다.
