Expansive soils are renowned for their swelling-shrinkage property and these volumetric changes resultantly cause huge damage to civil infrastructures. Likewise, subgrades consisting of expansive soils instigate serviceability failures in pavements across various regions of Pakistan and worldwide. This study presents the use of polypropylene fibers to improve the engineering properties of a local swelling soil. The moisture-density relationship, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and elastic modulus (E50), California bearing ratio (CBR) and one-dimensional consolidation behavior of the soil treated with 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8% fibers have been investigated in this study. It is found that the maximum dry density of reinforced soil slightly decreased by 2.8% due to replacement of heavier soil particles by light-weight fibers and the optimum moisture content remained almost unaffected due to non-absorbent nature of the fibers. A significant improvement has been observed in UCS (an increase of 279%), E50 (an increase of 113.6%) and CBR value (an increase of 94.4% under unsoaked and an increase of 55.6% under soaked conditions) of the soil reinforced with 0.4% fibers, thereby providing a better quality subgrade for the construction of pavements on such soils. Free swell and swell pressure of the soil also significantly reduced (94.4% and 87.9%, respectively) with the addition of 0.8% fibers and eventually converting the medium swelling soil to a low swelling class. Similarly, the compression and rebound indices also reduced by 69.9% and 88%, respectively with fiber inclusion of 0.8%. From the experimental evaluations, it emerges that polypropylene fiber has great potential as a low cost and sustainable stabilizing material for widespread swelling soils.
This study is to clarify the comparative relationship and a mechanical anisotropy of rock on the subject of granite distributed in the Namwon area Uniaxial compressive and Brazilian strengths with respect to the horizontal and vertical axes of granite are shown the linear relation. In the case of the result of the p-wave velocity measurement. it is represented that the velocity of vortical direction is faster about 10 to 15% than other two horizontal directions. The difference between velocities is caused by a developmental pattern of microcracks distributed in rock. Moreover, this result is very consistent with the result investigated through thin sections. The proportion of uniaxial compression strength to Index of point load strength ($Is_{(50)}$) is 18~20 times in case of granite. Uniaxial compressive strength is relatively good relationship with point load strength, Schmidt hammer rebound value, and tensile strength point load strength of them is the best comparative relationship. It is indicated that point load test is the most useful tool to estimate uniaxial compressive strength, comparing with other experimental methods.

Televiewer is a logging tool capable of scanning the borehole wall. The tool uses a rotating acoustic beam generator that acts as both a transmitter and receiver. The beams are sent toward the wall. The amplitude of a returning signal from the wall has nearly a linear relationship with the reflection coefficient R of the borehole wall, when the wall is smooth. As R depends only on rock impedance for fixed water impedance, the amplitude is directly associated with mass density and seismic velocity of rock. Meanwhile, the amplitude can be further reduced by wall roughness that may be caused by drilling procedures, differences in rock hardness, because the rough surface can easily scatter the acoustic energy and sometimes the hole becomes elongated in all directions according to the degree of weathering. In this sense, the amplitude is related to the hardness of rocks. For convenience of analysis, the measured amplitude image(2-D data(azimuth ${\times}$ depth)) is converted, with an appropriate algorithm, to the 1-D data(depth), where the amplitude image values along a predetermined fracture signature(sinusoid) are summed up and averaged. The resulting values are subsequently scaled simply by a scalar factor that is possibly consistent with a known strength. This scaled Televiewer reflectivity is named, as a matter of convenience,“Televiewer rock strength”. This paper shows, based on abundant representative case studies from about 8 years of Televiewer surveys, that Televiewer rock strength might be regarded, on a continuous basis with depth, as a quitely robust indicator of rock classification and in most cases as an approximate uniaxial strength that is comparable to the rebound value from Schmidt hammer test.

This study examines the estimation of strength through a ultra-high strength concrete mock-up specimen using the rock compressive strength test hammer. According to the test result, the commonly used strength estimation formulae showed differences among them when the data of this test were applied. In additional, it show that these formulae underestimated the actual measurements further when the compressive strength was 30MPa or greater and deviated the distribution range of actual measurements in all strength ranges. The rock test hammer showed a higher correlation than type N Schmidt hammer regardless of the direction of hit for each type of W/B and the inclusion of coarse aggregate, and mortar showed a little higher correlation than concrete. As a result, it can be suggested that the coefficient of variation and the standard deviation of the mortar(2.26%/1.36) are lower than those of the concrete(4.06%/2.5), and the smaller the size of the coarse aggregate, the smaller the coefficient of variation and the more accurate the value.
This study is to examine the engineering characteristics of colunmar joints in Mudeugsan National Park, a global geopark. For these purposes, physical and mechanical properties of Mudeungsan Tuff, evaluation for the weathering degree of columnar joints, and crack behavior monitoring in columnar joints were conducted. The physical properties of Mudeungsan tuff were 1.02% for the average porosity, 0.38% for the average absorption, 2.69 g/㎤ for the average specific gravity, and 4,948 m/s for the average elastic wave velocity. Its mechanical properties were 337 MPa for the average uniaxial compressive strength, 68 GPa for the average elastic modulus, 0.29 for the average Poisson's ratio, 41.3 MPa for the average cohesion strength, and 62.8° for the average friction angle. the average rebound Q-value of the silver Schmidt hammer for the three columnar joint blocks at the Ipseok-dae was shown as 49.3. when this value is converted into uniaxial compressive strength, it becomes 70.5 MPa, which is about 21% of the uniaxial compression strength of Mudeungsan tuff. In addition, according to the results of crack monitoring measurements for the three columnar joint blocks at the Ipseok-dae, the crack behavior is less than 1 mm, so it is believed that its behavior in Ipseak-dae columnar joints has hardly occured to date.

The purpose of this study is to find problems about pedestrian road of tourist resort and to make new type of sidewalk pavement with wood chip and binder using urethane resin on the parks and tourist resort. The wood chip pavement has new economics and durability with comfortable texture. Samples of these pavement materials were tested for tensile strength, permeability and ball rebound value. Also, after immersion for 24 hours, tensile strength, samples' thickness and weight were measured and discussed the strength reduction according to the water immersion. Tensile strength experimentation was examined on dry condition and water immersion. The result of examination on dry condition was 1.06MPa and on water immersion was 0.67MPa. The results showed 36.8% decreasing rate of tensile strength. Permeability experiment test based on field permeability method of pavement were conducted as a result, permeability coefficients were in the range of 0.67~0.78mm/s that all exceeds object permeability coefficient. Elasticity experiment was based on elasticity test method of Japan road association. GB coefficient was 21% and SB coefficient was 10%. GB coefficient and SB coefficient increased if fine aggregate were increased.

Albumin-modification has been viewed as one of the most effective ways of extending the short in vivo lifetimes of peptide drugs by delaying glomerular filtration. In this study, we describe a new type 2 anti-diabetic exendin-4 (Ex4) peptide derivative with significant binding ability to human serum albumin (HSA). This exendin-4 derivative consists of a 4-branched polyethylene glycol $(PEG)_{5k}$ (Mw: 20 kDa) modified with three stearylamines ($C_{18}-NH_2$) and one exendin-4 on its branches. PEG and stearylamine were selected to provide functionality to increase molecular size and bind to albumin, respectively. This derivative ($3C_{18}-4PEG_{5k}$-Ex4) was shown to have larger molecular size (Ca. 152 kDa) than actual (25.0 kDa) when subjected to size-exclusion chromatography, and the fluorescein-tagged $3C_{18}-4PEG_{5k}$-Ex4 displayed significant binding to the HSA-immobilized Sepharose CL-4B resin using confocal laser scanning microscopy. Furthermore, $3C_{18}-4PEG_{5k}$-Ex4 was found to have acceptable anti-hyperglycemic efficacy via three consecutive oral glucose tolerance testings (OGTT) in fasted type 2 diabetic db/db mice. The $HD_{total}$ value ($57.6{\pm}12.3%$) of $3C_{18}-4PEG_{5k}$-Ex4 at a 50 nmol/kg dose was 2-fold greater than that ($31.0{\pm}8.7%$) of native exendin-4 in non-fasted db/db mice. Especially, the blood glucose levels in the mice group treated with $3C_{18}-4PEG_{5k}$-Ex4 did not rebound to ~150 mg/dL until 24 h after the injection, which obviously shows the extended hypoglycemia. We believe that this derivative has great pharmaceutical potential as a novel long-acting type 2 anti-diabetic injection treatment.
Characteristics of high molecular weight styrene-butadiene rubber(HM-SBR)/low molecular weight styrene-butadiene rubber(LM-SBR) mixtures were studied to investigate how to modify the processability and the mechanical properties of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). Mooney viscosity of the HM-SBR/LM-SBR mixtures and torque increase due to the vulcanization decreased by increasing the LM-SBR content of the mixtures. Shore A hardness and rebound properties were decreased by increasing the LM-SBR content of the mixtures. It was found that the value of tan ${\delta}$ of the mixtures in rubbery state was increased, while glass transition temperatures of the vulcanized blends were constant by increasing the LM-SBR content of the mixtures. It was postulated that the decrease of Mooney viscosity by increasing the LM-SBR content of the blends was due to plasticizing effects of the LM-SBR and the increased polydispersity of the mixtures. Change of mechanical properties of the vulcanized HM-SBR/LM-SBR mixtures was attributed to the decreased crosslink densities of the mixtures by increasing the LM-SBR content of the mixtures.
The purpose of this study is to design a model with the structural stability so as not to lose the operational function due to structural plastic or fail of a sliding blast door by blast pressure to this aim, a numerical simulation was performed using full-size experiments and M&S (Modeling & Simulation) of the sliding blast door. The sliding blast door ($W3,000{\times}H2,500mm$) under the blast load is in the form of a sliding type 2-way metal grill, which was applied by a design blast pressure (reflected pressure $P_r$) of 17 bar. According to the experimental results of a real sliding blast door under blast load, the blast pressure reached the sliding blast door approximately 4.3 ms after the explosion and lasted about 4.0 ms thereafter. The maximum blast pressure($P_r$) was 347.7 psi (2,397.3 kPa), it is similar to the UFC 3-340-02 of Parameter(91 %). In addition, operation inspection that was conducted for the sliding blast door after real test showed a problem of losing the door opening function, which was because of the fail of the Reversal Bolt that was installed to prevent the shock due to rebound of the blast door from the blast pressure. According to the reproduction of the experiment through M&S by applying the blast pressure measurement value of the full-size experiments, the sliding blast door showed a similar result to the full-size experiment in that the reversal bolt part failed to lose the function. In addition, as the pressure is concentrated on the failed reversal bolt, the Principal Tensile Failure Stress was exceeded in only 1.25 ms after the explosion, and the reversal bolt completely failed after 5.4 ms. Based on the result of the failed reversal bolt through the full-size experiment and M&S, the shape and size of the bolts were changed to re-design the M&S and re-analyze the sliding blast door. According to the M&S re-analysis result when the reversal bolt was designed in a square of 25 mm ($625mm^2$), the maximum pressure that the reversal bolt receives showed 81% of the principal tensile failure stress of the material, in plastic stage before fail.
This study is to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties on the Ipseok-dae columnar joints of Mt. Mudeung National Park. For these purposes, physical and mechanical properties as well as discontinuity property on the Mudeungsan tuff, measurement of vibration and local meteorology around columnar joints, and ground deformation by self-weight of columnar joints were examined. For the physical and mechanical properties, average values were respectively 0.65% for porosity, 2.69 for specific gravity, 2.68 g/cm3 for density, and 2411 m/s for primary velocity, 323 MPa for uniaxial compressive strength, 81 GPa Young's modulus, and 0.25 for Poisson's ratio. For the joint shear test, average values were respectively 3.15 GPa/m for normal stiffness, 0.38 GPa/m for shear stiffness, 0.50 MPa for cohesion, and 35° for internal friction angle. The JRC standard and JRC chart was in the range of 4~6, and 1~1.5, respectively. The rebound value Q of silver schmidt hammer was 57 (≒ 90 MPa). It corresponds 20% of the uniaxial compressive strength of intact rock. The maximum vibration value around the Ipseok=dae columnar joints was in the range of 0.57 PPV (mm/s)~2.35 PPV (mm/s). The local meteorology of surface temperature, air temperature, humidity, and wind on and around columnar joints appeared to have been greatly influenced the weather on the day of measurement. For the numerical analysis of ground deformation due to its self-weight of the Ipseok-dae columnar joints, the maximum displacement of the right ground shows when the ground distance is approximately 2 m, while drastically decreased by 2~4 m, thereafter was insignificant. The maximum displacement of the middle ground shows when the ground distance is approximately 0~2 m, while drastically decreased by 3~10 m, thereafter was insignificant. The maximum displacement of the left ground shows when the ground distance is approximately 5~6 m, while drastically decreased by 6~10 m, thereafter was insignificant.
