  • Alongside the increasingly larger domestic construction projects is the gradual rise in construction waste. Consequently, serious environmental problems emerge. The increase in demand for housing remodeling due mainly to the increase in national income and improvement of quality of life is the main reason for the increase in construction waste. This study was conducted as the basic study for the prevention and reduction of construction waste generated by apartment remodeling; it aimed at identifying the remodeling items and reasons. Toward this end, this study targeted apartments at least 15 years old and conducted a questionnaire survey to determine the remodeled sections and remodeling reasons. As a result of the questionnaire survey, the bathroom, floor finishing, and kitchen furniture recorded the highest ratios in remodeling. Old materials, aesthetic motivation, and pleasant living space composition were cited as the major remodeling reasons. This study is significant as a basic study for generating environmental and economic profits through systematic waste management. Further studies should develop guidelines suitable for construction waste reduction and recycling in line with the construction and demolition phases in case of remodeling.

  • Purpose: It is necessary to look at the reasons why the Korean government has failed in boosting mom and pops, even though many aid programs for independent retailers have been introduced. Furthermore, this research will provide policy makers and practitioners with new insight to improve the performance of government policies. Research design: the researcher has had an interview with the 26 practitioners to gather the right information. Furthermore, interview results have been categorized into the government-related issues, support programs and shop owner-related issues, from a practitioner's perspectives. Results: The researcher found that the confusion of governmental support organization, the lack of retail marketing experts, frequent job rotation, the lack of cooperation between bureaucrats and associations, concerned about the governmental-related issues, are failure reasons. In terms of support program issues, the research found the following reasons: no blueprint, the lack of retail experts, relevance to budget scale, and the complexity of budget implementation. Associated with shop owner-related issues, the author found that the causes of failure are closely related to aging shopkeepers, the absence of a successor and increasing dependence on a government. Conclusions: The author proposes that a government has to rebuild existing support programs for small shop owners.

  • There have been mixed reports about the idea of utilization of resources developed from one discipline across disciplinary areas. Grounded with the argument that critical thinking is not domain-specific (Mulnix, 2012; Vaughn, 2005), we developed a theoretical model of intellectual resources (IR) that students develop and use when learning and doing mathematics and science. The theoretical model shows that there are two parallel epistemic practices students engage in science and mathematics - searching for reasons and giving reasons (Bailin, 2002; 2007; Mulnix, 2012). Applying Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Model to the data of 9,300 fourth grade students' responses to standardized science and mathematics assessments, we verified the theoretical model empirically. Empirically, the theoretical model is verified in that fourth graders do use the two epistemic practices, and the development of parallel practices in science impacts the development of the two practices in mathematics: A fourth grader's ability to search for reasons in science affects his or her ability to search for reasons in mathematics, and the ability to give reasons in science affects the same ability use in mathematics. The findings indicate that educators need to open ideas of sharing development of epistemic practices across disciplines because students who developed intellectual resources can utilize these in other settings.

  • Open port has the designated course and traffic jam of ships happens often. This fact may connect to ship crash easily. And the accident happens due to violation of navigation mainly. In ship crash between Neoblue and Shinkwang 7 at incheon open port, the Korean incheon maritime safety tribunal shows that the violation of navigation and duty of attention at the open port would produce ship crash directly. Wherefore, the interpretation and application of navigation are important to protect future ship crash accident. The points of navigation as objects of study are divided into two categories, interpretation and application of navigation on crashing between the ship which navigate the designated course and the ship which enter into the designated course from the another course or outside the course, interpretation and application of navigation on crashing between two or more ships, which navigate violating the navigation every ships and violating agreement rule each other. And as conclusion, I refer the legal responsibility both Neoblue and Shinkwang 7 in detail. The results of this study as follows : First, in case of crashing between the ship which navigate the designated course and the ship which enter into the designated course from the another course or outside the course, public order in open port act can be applied by priority. However, in applying the public order the principle of trust and reasons of crew, cause and effect, the time of navigation application are mandatory considerations. Second, in case of crashing between two or more ships, which navigate violating the navigation every ships and violating agreement rule each other, we should focus on the reasons of crew. Also, the reasons of crew need strict conditions. These means that the awareness of crash danger and recognition of special circumstance including limit state of ships, existence of emergency danger, non escaping crash danger by only observance of navigation. And in case of this state the public order the principle of trust and reasons of crew, cause and effect, the time of navigation application should be considered by priority, too.

  • The purposes of this study were to assess current status of respirator usage among workers in the small-scale industries and to identify those factors causing respirator wearers not to continuously wear respirators during work. Total 168 workers participated voluntarily in the survey. In order to cover all possible reasons, though not exclusive, 33 diverse questions were developed based upon the results in the published literatures and from researchers' own experience. The most common type of respirator worn was the disposable single-use respirator(42%). However, masks made of gauze, which should not be considered as a respirator, were widely used (38%). Only 28% of respondents indicated they wear respirators continuously during work. The major reasons for removing respirators include, in descending order of frequency, difficulty in breathing (46%), sweating (39%), bothered by frequent removal (21%), inadequate mask size (19%) and hot air temperature inside the respirator (19%), etc. In addition, minor reasons including mask design, administrative, and personal reasons were also identified. These reasons should be considered in a well designed respirator program in order to improve workers' acceptance and usage of respirators.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the reasons for aging in place through an in-depth interview, which is a qualitative research method. The subjects of the study were 17 adults over the age of 60 years who preferred aging in place. Interviewees were asked questions about their experiences of past living, present living, and the future place where they want to live in and the reasons for their choice. In the in-depth interviews conducted from September 2012 to May 2013 for data collection the research participants were asked open-ended questions about their past living experiences and future living plan and were given the freedom to answer the questions in their own words. The results of the in-depth interviews revealed the following reasons for aging in place: 1) familiarity due to long-term residence, 2) strong attachment to the place and the neighbors, 3) satisfaction of present house, 4) personal stories associated with present house, 5) feeling of living in their own home, 6) convenience of the neighborhood for living, 7) caring relationship with the neighbors, 8) fear of a change of environment, and 9) resignation to the rest of their life. The findings indicated that residential types in old age need to be taken into account for both aging in place which referring to choosing to live where one has lived for years and referring to involuntarily staying where one has lived for years.

  • Objective: To evaluate the reasons influencing the preferences for a certain type of orthodontic appliance over another among prospective patients (PP) and orthodontists. Methods: A total of 49 PP and 51 orthodontists were asked about their preferences for the following appliances: clear aligners (CA), lingual metallic brackets (LMB), polycrystalline and monocrystalline ceramic brackets, and buccal metallic brackets (BMB). The participants rated the importance of 17 potential reasons that would explain their choices. The reasons that contributed most to these preferences were identified. Non-parametric tests (Fisher's exact, χ2 and Mann-Whitney tests) and multivariate analyses (regression and discriminant analysis) were used to assess the data (α = 0.05). Results: CA and BMB were the most chosen appliances by PP and orthodontists, respectively. LMB was the most rejected option among both groups of participants (p < 0.001). Rates of the importance of pain/discomfort, smile esthetics, finishing details, and feeding/speech impairment showed the highest differences between PP and orthodontists (p < 0.0005). Discriminant analyses showed that individuals who considered treatment time and smile esthetics as more important were more likely to prefer CA, while those who prioritized finishing details and cost were more likely to choose BMB (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Reasons related to comfort and quality of life during use were considered as more important by PP, while those related to the results and clinical performance of the appliances were considered as more relevant by orthodontists.

  • This study aimed to investigate the mediating effect of the screen media time of young children on the relationship between mothers' reasons for allowing young children to use screen media and their children's ability to regulate screen media. The participants consisted of 614 children aged 5-6 (312 boys and 302 girls), and all the survey questions were answered by their mothers. Descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, structural equation modeling, and bootstrapping analysis were employed to analyze the data using SPSS 25.0 and Mplus 8.6. The results were as follows. First, mothers' educational and ritualized reasons for allowing young children to use screen media and children's screen media time directly affected young children's ability to regulate screen media. Second, children's screen media time mediated the relationship between mothers' educational and ritualized reasons for allowing their children to use screen media and children's ability to regulate screen media. When mothers permitted their children to use screen media for educational purposes, their children were likely to spend less time on screen media usage which, in turn, increased their ability to regulate screen media. Conversely, the more mothers allowed their children to use screen media for ceremonial purposes, the more time their children spent on screen media and the less ability they had to regulate screen media usage. These outcomes suggest that, to improve children's screen media regulation ability, mothers must not routinely allow their children to use screen media and should manage their children's screen media time.
