The side and rear-side collision warning system using fuzzy control algorithms is discussed in this paper. Common rearside warning system has many problems. For example if target vehicle comes into the warning area, it must unconditionally warn. Drivers could be interrupted by it. To solve the problem, I divided measuring area into two sections. One section is blind area of vehicle and the other rear-side area. For blind area, obtained data was filtered inefficient warning signal by using relative velocity method. For rear-side area, a fuzzy logic algorithm is used to recognition of obstacles. According to our experiment relative velocity method and fuzzy logic algorithms were very efficient.
This paper describes a coordinated control algorithm for rear-side collision avoidance. In order to assist driver actively and increase driver's safety, the proposed coordinated control algorithm is designed to combine lateral control using a steering torque overlay by Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) and differential braking by Vehicle Stability Control (VSC). The main objective of a combined control strategy is twofold. The one is to prevent the collision between the subject vehicle and approaching vehicle in the adjacent lanes. The other is to limit actuator's control inputs and vehicle dynamics to safe values for the assurance of the driver's comfort. In order to achieve these goals, the Lyapunov theory and LMI optimization methods has been employed. The proposed coordinated control algorithm for rear-side collision avoidance has been evaluated via simulation using CarSim and MATLAB/Simulink.

This paper describes the system for detecting vehicles in the rear and rear-side that access between sidewalk and bus stopped to city road at day by computer vision-based method. This system informs appearance of vehicles to bus driver and passenger for the safety of a bus passenger getting off. The camera mounted on the top portion of the bus exit door gets the rear and rear-side image of the bus whenever a bus stops at the stop. The system sets search area between bus and sidewalk from this image and detects a vehicle by using change of image and sobel filtering in this area. From a central point of the vehicle detected, we can find out the distance, speed and direction by its location, width and length. It alarms the driver and passengers when it's judged that dangerous situation for the passenger getting off happens. This experiment results in a detection rate more than 87% in driving by bus on the road.

A study assessing driver acceptance level for various active safety systems against Korean drivers has been conducted. A 2013 Cadillac ATS model vehicle was tested along southern outskirt of Seoul including local roadway and interurban highway. Active safety systems included were FCA(Forward Collision Alert), LDW(Lane Departure Warning), SBZA(Side Blind Zone Alert), FRPA(Front/Rear Park Assist), RCTA(Rear Cross Traffic Alert), ACC(Adaptive Cruise Control), and AEB(Autonomous Emergency Braking). Participants experienced the FRPA, RCTA and AEB features in a controlled parking lot with a dummy vehicle and traffic cones as target obstacles. Remaining features have been tested on the accumulated stretched of 106 km long urban and interurban roadway. Series of questionnaires corresponding to each active safety systems have been conducted. Tentative results revealed that RCTA and SBZA systems received favourable ratings compared to the other ones.

An Integrated Dynamics Control system with four wheel Steering (IDCS) is proposed and analysed in this study. It integrates and controls steer angle of front and rear wheel simultaneously to enhance lateral stability and steerability. An active front steer (AFS) system and an active rear steer (ARS) system are also developed to compare their performances. The systems are evaluated during brake maneuver and several road conditions are used to test the performances. The results showed that IDCS vehicle follows the reference yaw rate and reduces side slip angle very well. AFS and ARS vehicles track the reference yaw rate but they can not reduce side slip angle. On split-${\mu}$ road, IDCS controller forces the vehicle to go straight ahead but AFS and ARS vehicles show lateral deviation from centerline.

In this thesis, a method is proposed to extract the car plate at the rear side of vehicle using blobs. We first extract the blobs in the input images using intensity variations and calculate the minimum horde. rectangle (MBR) of each blobs. It is followed that we select groups of blobs having similar width, centroid. And then, we try to detect the border lines of car plate and verify whether the area is a car plate or not using NN.

In this paper, we propose a blind spots elimination system using three cameras. A wide-angle camera is attached on trunk for eliminating blind spots of a rear-view mirror and two cameras are attached on each side-view mirror for eliminating blind spots of vehicle's sides. In order to eliminate blind spots efficiently, we suggest a method to build a panoramic mosaic view with two side images and one wide-angle rear image. First, we obtain an undistorted image from a wide-angle camera of rear-view and calculate the focus-of-contraction (FOC) in undistorted images of rear-view while the car is moving straight forward. Second, we compute a homography among side-view images and an undistorted image of rear-view in flat road scenes. Next, we perform an image registration process after road and background region segmentation. Finally, we generate various views such as a cylinder panorama view, a top view and an information panoramic mosaic view.
This paper describes an integrated control of torque vectoring and rear wheel steering using model predictive control. The control objective is to minimize the yaw rate and body side slip angle errors with chattering alleviation. The proposed model predictive controller is devised using a linear parameter-varying (LPV) vehicle model with real time estimation of the varying model parameters. The proposed controller has been investigated via computer simulations. In the simulation results, the performance of the proposed controller has been compared with uncontrolled cases. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can improve the lateral stability and handling performance.

This paper describes the method for detecting vehicles in the rear and rear-side at night by using headlight features. A headlight is the outstanding feature that can be used to discriminate a vehicle from a dark background. In the segmentation process, a night image is transformed to a binary image that consists of black background and white regions by gray-level thresholding, and noise in the binary image is eliminated by a morphological operation. In the feature extraction process, the geometric features and moment invariant features of a headlight are defined, and they are measured in each segmented region. Regions that are not appropriate to a headlight are filtered by using geometric feature measurement. In region classification, a pair of headlights is detected by using relational features based on the symmetry of a pair of headlights. Experimental results show that this method is very applicable to an approaching vehicle detection system at nighttime.
Aerodynamic design of a vehicle has very important meaning on the fuel economy, dynamic stability and the noise & vibration of a moving vehicle. In this study, the correlation of aerodynamic effect between two model vehicles moving inline on a road was studied with the basic SAE model vehicle. Drag and lift are two main physical forces acting on the vehicle and both of them directly effect on the fuel economy and driving stability of the vehicle. For the research, the distance between two vehicles is varied from 5m to 30m at the fixed vehicle speed, 100km/h and the side-wind was assumed to be zero. The main issue for this numerical research is on the understanding of the interaction forces; lift and drag between two vehicles formed inline. From the study, it was found that as the distance between two vehicles is closer, the drag force acting on both the front and rear vehicle decreases and the lift force has same trend for both vehicle. As the distance(D) is 5m, the drag of the front vehicle reduced 7.4% but 28.5% for the rear-side vehicle. As the distance is 30m, the drag of the rear vehicle is still reduced to 22% compared to the single driving.
