  • The Ground anchor is reinforcement to resist pull-out through ground that is used supports structure. The pull-out resistance of anchor is constructed by skin friction resistance from compression borehole wall in expanded wings and bearing pressure from the ground. Especially, underreamed ground anchor is reinforcement that adopts active reinforcement to prevent deformation of ground using bearing resistance generated reaming anchorage. This study is conducted to calculate bearing resistance of underreamed ground anchor. Realistic model tests were fulfilled to determine bearing resistance of anchor, and correlate results of tests to Uniaxial Compressive Strengths (UCS) of ground models that assumed weathered rock condition in 8 case. In a comprehensive series of the tests, the bearing resistances were measured by pull-out tests. The bearing resistances derived from tests have a linear correlation with UCS. We also suggest empirical equation between bearing resistance and UCS of rocks by single linear regression analyses. In test results of this study, the bearing resistances were evaluated approximately 13 times higher than UCS of the grounds, and it is qualitatively similar to numerical values of pull-out force derived from theory.

  • Integral type system is that a system is represented by a proper rational function. In this paper, novel control scheme based on model reference approach is proposed for integral type system. The proposed scheme compensates various undesirable effects of the system. In especially, the proposed scheme applied to DC servo control system, analyzed its control characteristic. Performances of the proposed system show excellent control characteristics; complete compensation of the undesirable nonlinear friction and load viscous, For proving realistic validities, LOS(Line Of Sight) stabilization system which has typically many nonlinear effects is experimented. After executing the computer simulation in "MATLAB", then the results are compared with the experiments. The results are very similar in theoretical study and the proposed control scheme is successfully verified. verified.

  • Many of past studies using physically based numerical climate models indicate that increases in atmospheric $CO_2$could enhance summer dryness over continental region in middle-high latitudes. However the models used in those studies do not take account of permafrost in high latitudes. We have carried out a set of experiments applying a version of global climate model that can reproduce realistic distribution of the permafrost. From the results, it is indicated that permafrost functions as a large reservoir in hydrologic cycle maintaining dry, hot summer over continents in northern middle-high latitudes, and that the $CO_2$warming would reduce this function by causing climatological thawing of permafrost, which would result in moister and cooler summer, and warmer winter in the same region. The present study indicates that an inclusion of very simple description of soil freezing process can make a large difference in a model simulation.

  • Recently, optical disk drives are increasingly demanded to have higher speed as well as high information density, especially for applications like CD ROM drives. To this end, improvement of their optical pickup structure and control is recognized the very challenging issue. In this paper, the pickup is first analytically modelled in a plane to describe its coupled auto-focusing and auto-tracking motions. Subsequently, the model is linearized and combined with actuator dynamics for the auto-focusing system. With its unmeasurable parameters being estimated based on experimental data, an approximate I-DOF linear model is obtained neglecting the coupling term. To design the high speed and robust positional servo controller realistic design specifications are addressed, and H control method is employed based on the approximate model. Finally, taking the pickup in a commerical high speed CD ROM drive as an example performance of the designed controller is verified through realtime experiments.

  • This paper proposes a novel approach to building an occupancy grid map using sonar data. It is very important for a mobile robot to recognize and construct its surrounding environments for navigation. However, the grid map constructed by ultrasonic sensors cannot represent a realistic shape of given environments due to incorrect sonar measurements caused by specular reflection. To overcome this problem, we propose an advanced sonar sensor model which consists of distance and shape factors used to determine the reliability of sensor data. Through this sensor model, a robot can build a high-quality grid map. The proposed method was verified by various experiments and showed that the robot could build an accurate map with sonar data in various indoor environments.

  • The present study conducted a numerical modeling on the diesel SCR (selective catalytic reduction) system using ammonia as a reductant over vanadium-based catalysts $(V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2)$. Transient modeling for ammonia adsorption/desorption on the catalyst surface was firstly carried out, and then the SCR reaction was modeled considering for it. In the current catalytic reaction model, we extended the pure chemical kinetic model based on laboratory-scale powdered-phase catalyst experiments to the chemico-physical one applicable to realistic commercial SCR reactors. To simulate multi-dimensional heat and mass transfer phenomena, the SCR reactor was modeled in two dimensional, axisymmetric domain using porous medium approach. Also, since diesel engines operate in transient mode, the present study employed an unsteady model. In addition, throughout simulations using the developed code, effects of space velocity on the DeNOx performance were investigated.

  • Analytic models have been developed to solve integrated production-distribution problems in supply chain management (SCM). As one of major constraints in analytic models, capacity, which is the total operation time in this paper has mostly been known or disregarded assuming infinite capacity. Also, as major factors, machine processing time to fabricate or assemble a part or product at a certain machine center in production system and vehicle processing time to deliver a product to a customer by a certain vehicle in distribution system have been fixed and regarded as a static factor, But in the real systems significant differences exit between capacity and the required time to achieve the production-distribution plan and between processing time and consumed time to process a part or product. In this paper, capacity and processing times in the analytic model are considered as dynamic factors and adjusted by the results from independently developed simulation model, which includes general production-distribution characteristics. Through experiments, we obtain the more realistic solutions reflecting stochastic natures by performing the iterative analytic-simulation procedure.

  • In this paper, the vibration suppression scheme based on a model referece approach is proposed. The vibration results from the coupling of the system and its frequency are given by the mechanical factors. In the proposed scheme, a low frequency vibration mode is transferred to high one. And also its damping ratio can be increased without any mechanical redesign. Therefore, bandwidth and open loop gain of the plant are increased and the performance of the system can be improved. This paper analyzes the proposed vibration suppression scheme, which is compared with the conventional control scheme for mechanical resonance suppression. For proving the realistic validity, we apply the proposed scheme to a LOS(Line Of Sight) stabilization system which has vibration effect. Finally, the proposed scheme is verified through simulations and experiments.

  • A critical component of air pollution modeling is the representation of atmospheric flow fields within a model domain, since an accurate air quality simulation requires an accurate portrayal of the three-dimensional wind fields. The present study investigated data assimilation using surface observational data in the complex coastal regions to simulate a realistic atmospheric flow fields. Surface observational data were categorized into three groups (Near coastal region, Far coastal region 1, Far costal region 2) by the locations where the sites are. Experiments were designed according to the location of observational stations and MM5/CALPUFF was used. The results of numerical simulation of atmospheric flow fields are used as input data for CALPUFF which predicts dispersion fields of air pollutants. The result of this study indicated that data assimilation using data in the far coastal region 2 provided an attractive method for generating realistic meteorological fields and dispersion fields of air pollutants in Gwangyang area because data in the near coastal region are variable and narrow representation.

  • It is well known that acoustic emission (AE) is indicator of rock fracturing or damage as rock is brought to failure under the uniaxial compressive loads. In this paper, an experimental study on the source location of acoustic emission on the cylindrical specimens of granite under uniaxial compression test was made. The AE source location was made by measuring the six channel AE data. Comparing to this experiment, the numerical method is applied to model the initiation and propagation of fracture by AE using a numerical code, RFPA (Realistic Failure Process Analysis). This code incorporates the mesoscopic heterogeneity in Young's modulus and rock strength characteristic of rock masses. In the numerical models, values of Young's modulus and rock strength are realized according to a Weibull distribution in which the distribution parameters represent the level of heterogeneity of the medium. The results of the simulations show that RFPA can be used not only to produce acoustic emission similar to those measurements in our experiments, but also to predict fracturing patterns under uniaxial loading condition.
