  • In ultrasound telemedicine, it is important to reduce the size of the data by compressing the ultrasound image when sending it. Ultrasound images can be divided into image context and other information consisting of patient ID, date, and several letters. Between them, ultrasound context is very important information for diagnosis and should be securely preserved as much as possible. In several previous papers, ultrasound compression methods were proposed to compress ultrasound context and other information into different compression parameters. This ultrasound compression method minimized the loss of ultrasound context while greatly compressing other information. This paper proposed the method of automatic segmentation of ultrasound context to overcome the limitation of the previously described ultrasound compression method. This algorithm was designed to robust for various ultrasound device and to enable real-time operation to maintain the benefits of ultrasound imaging machine. The operation time of extracting ultrasound context through the proposed segmentation method was measured, and it took 311.11 ms. In order to optimize the algorithm, the ultrasound context was segmented with down sampled input image. When the resolution of the input image was reduced by half, the computational time was 126.84 ms. When the resolution was reduced by one-third, it took 45.83 ms to segment the ultrasound context. As a result, we verified through experiments that the proposed method works in real time.

  • In this paper, we implemented a web-based communication system using Motion JPEG and RTP. MJPEG compression method is used for compression of the image in order to film and transmit the moving image information in the real time, and the RTP(Real-Time Transport Protocol) which differs from the existing TCP and UDP is used for the data transmission.

  • In this paper, a variable length block code for real time compression and decompression of hanguel and chinese character bit map font is proposed. The proposed code shows a good compression ratio in complete form of hangeul myoungjo and godik style and chinese batang and doddum style bit map font. Besides, a compression and decompression ASIC is designed and simulated on CAD. The 0.8 micron CMOS sea of gate is used to implement the ASIC in amount of 5,200 gates, and it runs at simple hardware and compress and decompress at 33M bit/sec at maximum, which is ideal for real time applications.

  • In this paper. we proposed a hardware(H/W) structure which can compress the video and embed the watermark in real time operation and implemented it into a FPGA platform using VHDL(VHSIC Hardware Description Language). All the image processing element to process both compression and reconstruction in a FPGA were considered each of them was mapped into H/W with the efficient structure for FPGA. The global operations of the designed H/W consists of the image compression with the watermarking and the reconstruction, and the watermarking operation is concurrently operated with the image compression. The implemented H/W used the 59%(12943) LAB(Logic Array Block) and 9%(28352) ESB(Embedded System Block) in the APEX20KC EP20K600CB652-7 FPGA chip of ALTERA, and stably operated in the 70㎒ clock frequency over. So we verified the real time operation, 60 fields/sec(30 frames/sec).

  • In an emergency telemedicine system such as the High-quality Multimedia based Real-time Emergency Telemedicine(HMRET) service, it is very important to examine the status of the patient continuously using the multimedia data including the biological signals(ECG, BP, Respiration, $SpO_2)$ of the patient. In order to transmit these data real time through the communication means which have the limited transmission capacity, it is also necessary to compress the biological data besides other multimedia data. For this purpose, we investigate and compare the ECG compression techniques in the time domain and in the wavelet transform domain, and present an effective lossless compression method of the biological signals using PEG Huffman table for an emergency telemedicine system. And, for the HMRET service, we developed the lossless compression and reconstruction program or the biological signals in MSVC++ 6.0 using DPCM method and JPEG Huffman table, and tested in an internet environment.

  • As a large amount of data generated by sensors or devices at the manufacturing site is transmitted to the server or client, problems arise in network processing time delay and storage resource cost increase. To solve this problem, considering the manufacturing site, where real-time responsiveness and non-disruptive processes are essential, QRC (Quotient Remainder Compression) and BL_beta compression algorithms that enable real-time and lossless compression were applied to actual manufacturing site sensor data for the first time. As a result of the experiment, BL_beta had a higher compression rate than QRC. As a result of experimenting with the same data by slightly adjusting the data size of QRC, the compression rate of the QRC algorithm with the adjusted data size was 35.48% and 20.3% higher than the existing QRC and BL_beta compression algorithms.

  • In this paper, we developed a new and robust algorithm for a practical and very efficient MPEG-4 video coding. The MPEG-4 video group has developed the video Verification Model(VM) which evolved through time by means of core experiments. And in the standardization process, MS-FDAM was developed based on the standard document of ISO/IEC 14496-2 and VM as a reference MPEG-4 coding system. But MS -FDAM has drawbacks in practical MPEG-4 coding and it does not have the VOP extraction functionality. In this research, we implemented a preprocessing system for a real-time input and the VOP extraction for a practical content-based MPEG-4 video coding and also implemented the motion detection to achieve the high compression rate of 180:1.

  • ICT technology has been applied to various educational fields, but applying to educational test field is limited. Computer-based test (CBT) can overcome temporal and spatial constraints of conventional paper-based test, but is vulnerable to fraud by test parties. In this paper, we propose real-time monitoring and process management methods to enhance the security of CBT. In the proposed methods, the test screens of students are periodically captured and transferred to the professor screen to enable real-time monitoring, and the possible processes used for cheating can be blocked before testing. In order to monitor the screen of many students in real time, effective compression of the captured original image is important. We applied three-step compression methods: initial image compression, resolution reduction, and re-compression. Through this, the original image of about 6MB was converted into the storage image of about 3.8KB. We use the process extraction and management functions of Windows API to block the processes that may be used for cheating. The CBT system of this paper with the new security enhancement methods shows the superiority through comparison of the security related functions with the existing CBT systems.

  • This study aims to optimize the cochlea-inspired artificial filter bank (CAFB) using El-Centro seismic waveforms and test its performance through a shaking table test on a two-span bridge model. In the process of optimizing the CAFB, El-Centro seismic waveforms were used for the purpose of evaluating how they would affect the optimizing process. Next, the optimized CAFB was embedded in the developed wireless-based intelligent data acquisition (IDAQ) system to enable response measurement in real-time. For its performance evaluation to obtain a seismic response in real-time using the optimized CAFB, a two-span bridge (model structures) was installed in a large shaking table, and a seismic response experiment was carried out on it with El-Centro seismic waveforms. The CAFB optimized in this experiment was able to obtain the seismic response in real-time by compressing it using the embedded wireless-based IDAQ system while the obtained compressed signals were compared with the original signal (un-compressed signal). The results of the experiment showed that the compressed signals were superior to the raw signal in response performance, as well as in data compression effect. They also proved that the CAFB was able to compress response signals effectively in real-time even under seismic conditions. Therefore, this paper established that the CAFB optimized by being embedded in the wireless-based IDAQ system was an economical and efficient data compression sensing technology for measuring and monitoring the seismic response in real-time from structures based on the wireless sensor networks (WSNs).
