  • A real-time monitoring and modeling system (RTMMS) for rainfall-induced turbidity flow, which is one of the major obstacles for sustainable use of reservoir water resources, is under development. As a prediction model for the RTMMS, a laterally integrated two-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model, CE-QUAL-W2 was tested by simulating the temperature stratification, density flow regimes, and temporal and spatial distributions of turbidity in a reservoir. The inflow water temperature and turbidity measured every hour during the flood season of 2004 were used as the boundary conditions. The monitoring data showed that inflow water temperature drop by 5 to $10^{\circ}C$ during rainfall events in summer, and consequently resulted in the development of density flow regimes such as plunge flow and interflow in the reservoir. The model showed relatively satisfactory performance in replicating the water temperature profiles and turbidity distributions, although considerable discrepancies were partially detected between observed and simulated results. The model was either very efficient in computation as the CPU run time to simulate the whole flood season took only 4 minutes with a Pentium 4(CPU 2.0GHz) desktop computer, which is essentially requited for real-time modeling of turbidity plume.

  • The present study analyzes hydrologic utilization of optimal radar-derived rainfall by using semi-distributed TOPMODEL and evaluates the impacts of radar rainfall and model parametric uncertainty on a hydrologic model. Monte Carlo technique is used to produce the flow ensembles. The simulated flows from the corrected radar rainfalls with real-time bias adjustment scheme are well agreed to observed flows during 22-26 July 2003. It is shown that radar-derived rainfall is useful for simulating streamflow on a basin scale. These results are diagnose with which radar-rainfall Input and parametric uncertainty influence the character of the flow simulation uncertainty. The main conclusions for this uncertainty analysis are that the radar input uncertainty is less influent than the parametric one, and combined uncertainty with radar and Parametric input can be included the highest uncertainty on a streamflow simulation.

  • When designing hydraulic structures, the chosen method of time distribution in a hyetograph is highly significant. There are several methods used for measuring time distribution. In the case of Huff (1967), which is widely used in Korea, the Ministry of Construction and Transportation (MOCT, 2000), and the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs (MOLTMA, 2011) have long been increasing their use of this method. The MOLTMA uses the conventional Huff method's measurement of 1 inch (25.4 mm) as the threshold. Many researchers have pointed out that this method often leads to underestimation, because of the excessive flatness. Therefore, for this study, a new time distribution method was developed to analyze only extreme rainfall events-those over the standard of severe rainstorms (that is, more than 30 mm per hour or 80 mm per day)-and that was verified using a rainfall-runoff model and applying it to a real basin.

  • For the real-time control of a multi-purpose reservoir in case of a storm, it is absolutely necessary to forecast accurate flood inflows through a good rainfall-runoff model by calibrating the parameters with the on-line rainfall and water level data transmitted by the telemetering systems. To calibrate the parameters of a runoff model. the trial and error method of manual calibration has been adopted from the subjective view point of a model user. The object of this study is to develop a automatic calibration method using an optimization technique. The pattern-search algorithm was applied as an optimization technique because of the stability of the solution under various conditions. The object function was selected as the sum of the squares of differences between observed and fitted ordinates of the hydrograph. Two historical flood events were applied to verify the developed technique for the automatic calibration of the parameters of the storage-function rainfall-runoff model which has been used for the flood control of the Soyanggang multi-purpose reservoir by the Korea Water Resources Corporation. The developed method was verified to be much more suitable than the manual method in flood forecasting and real-time reservoir controlling because it saves calibration time and efforts in addition to the better flood forecasting capability.

  • It has been widely acknowledged that climate system associated with extreme rainfall events was difficult to understand and extreme rainfall simulation in climate model was more difficult. This study developed a new model for extracting rainfall filed associated with extreme events as a way to characterize large scale climate system. Main interests are to derive location, size and direction of the rainfall field and this study developed an algorithm to extract the above characteristics from global climate data set. This study mainly utilized specific humidity and wind vectors driven by NCEP reanalysis data to define the rainfall field. Geometric first and second moments have been extensively employed in defining the rainfall field in selected zone, and an ellipsoid based model were finally introduced. The proposed geometric moments based ellipsoid model works equally well with regularly and irregularly distributed synthetic grid data. Finally, the proposed model was applied to space-time real rainfall filed. It was found that location, size and direction of the rainfall field was successfully extracted.

  • This research presents a prototype development and implementation of Decision Support System (DSS) for integrated river basin water management for the flood control. The DSS consists of Relational Database Management System, Hydrologic Data Monitoring System, Spatial Analysis Module, Spatial and Temporal Analysis for Rainfall Event Tool, Flood Forecasting Module, Real-Time Operation of Multi Reservoir System, and Dialog Module with Graphical User Interface and Graphic Display Systems. The developed DSS provides an automated process of alternative evaluation and selection within a flexible, fully integrated, interactive, centered relational database management system in a user-friendly computer environment. The river basin decision-maker for the flood control should expect that she or he could manage the flood events more effectively by fully grasping the hydrologic situation throughout the basin.

  • For real-time flood forecasting and effective control flood at the Youngsan estuary dam, the Flood Forecasting and Control User Interface System II (FFCUS II) has been developed. This paper describes the features and application of FFCUS II. FFCUS II is composed of the database management subsystem, the model subsystem, and the graphic user interface. The database management subsyem collects rainfall data and stream flow data, updates, processes, and searches the data. The model subsystem predicts the inflow hydrograph, the tide, forecasts flood hydrograph, and simulates the release rate from the sluice gates. The graphic user interface subsystem aids the user's decision-making process by displaying the operation results of the database management subsystem and model subsystem.

  • The subject research attempts to develop a hydrologic-hydraulic forecasting system suitable for use in large river basins. A conceptual hydrologic rainfall-runoff model is used to produce streamflow from meteorological and hydrologic input data over each subbasin, while a hydraulic model is used to route the catchment outflows in the stream network. For operational flow prediction, an efficient state estimator has been designed for the real-time updating of model states from newly recorded data. The real-time application of the forecasting system indicates that this model produces reliable short-term predicted results.

  • The development of a basin-wide runoff analysis model is to analysis monthly and daily hydrologic runoff components including surface runoff, subsurface runoff, return flow, etc. at key operation station in the targeted basin. h short-term water demand forecasting technology will be developed fatting into account the patterns of municipal, industrial and agricultural water uses. For the development and utilization of runoff analysis model, relevant basin information including historical precipitation and river water stage data, geophysical basin characteristics, and water intake and consumptions needs to be collected and stored into the hydrologic database of Integrated Real-time Water Information System. The well-known SSARR model was selected for the basis of continuous daily runoff model for forecasting short and long-term natural flows.
