  • Recently, Ball Grid Arrays(BGAs) are getting used more frequently for a package type. The connectors on a BGA consist of a large number of small solder balls in a grid shape on its bottom side. However, since balls of BGAs mounted on PCBs are not visible, inspection before mounting them is indispensable. High speed non-contact 3D measurement technologies are necessary far real-time measurement of ball height, the most important inspection item. In this paper, an accurate 3D data acquisition system for BGAs is proposed that can acquire 3D profile at high speed using a 3D smart camera and laser slit ray projection. Some clipping and morphological filtering operations are employed to remove spiky error data, which occur due to reflections from some ball area to camera direction.

  • A smart grid is a next-generation power grid that can improve energy efficiency by applying information and communication technology to the general power grid. The smart grid makes it possible to exchange information about electricity production and consumption between electricity providers and consumers in real-time. Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is the core technology of the smart grid. The AMI provides two-way communication by installing a modem in an existing digital meter and typically include smart meters, data collection units, and meter data management systems. Because the AMI requires data collection units to control multiple smart meters, it is essential to ensure network availability under heavy network loads. If the load on the work done by the data collection unit is high, it is necessary to allocation new data collection units to ensure availability and improve energy efficiency. In this paper, we discuss the allocation scheme of data collection units for the energy efficiency of the AMI.

  • The emergence of the Smart Grid is an integrated solution for the next generation power system that combines IT technology in the power system to create optimal energy utilization and various services. However, these convergence technologies (power systems and information communications) are not only improving the related technologies but also producing various problems especially exposure to cyber risk. In particular, the intelligent power grid has security vulnerabilities through real-time information sharing among various organically linked systems, and it is more complicated than the cyber risk problem in the existing IT field and is directly connected to national disaster accidents. Therefore, in order to construct and operate a more stable smart grid, this paper analyzes the system of power system control system in Korea, and proposes a cyber security element definition and a countermeasure establishment method of power monitoring & control systems based on security standards of smart grid (No. SPS-SGSF-121-1-1).

  • It is important to identify dynamic characteristics of nuclear fuel components. Since the fuel always exposed to turbulent flow, the dynamic contact between grids and rods is one of the fuel failure modes. The dynamic behavior of grids in nuclear fuels is quite complex, since two pairs of spring support are placed in the limited space. The strap in a cell has single spring and double dimples and this paper focuses on investigation of the grid strap(Test Fuel Strap, TFS) vibration in one cell. To identify the grid strap vibration, modal analysis of the strap is performed using Finite Element Method (FEM). Modal testing on a $5{\times}5$ grid structure without rods is performed. The modal testing results are compared to analytic results. In addition, random test considering rod effect is performed about a $5{\times}5$ grid with rods under real contact condition in the air. Finally, the strap vibration of a $5{\times}5$ fuel bundle in INvestigation of Flow INduced vIbraTion(INFINIT) facility is measured in real fluid velocity condition without heating. It is shown that modal frequencies from the test are almost equal to those peak frequencies in the INFINIT test.

  • Grid computing is an application to obtain the most efficient performance from computing resources in terms of cost and convenience. It is also considered as a good method to solve a problem that cannot be settled by conventional computing technologies such as clustering or is requiring supercomputing capability due to its complex and long-running task. In order to run grid computing effectively, it needs to connect high-performance computing resources in real-time which are distributed geographically. Answering to the needs of this grid application, researchers in several universities with Argonne National Laboratory in the USA (ANL) as the main axis have developed Globus. It is noticed, however, that the quality of service (QoS) is not guaranteed when certain jobs are exchanged through networks in the context of Globus. To tackle with this problem, the ANL has invented Globus Architecture for Reservation and Allocation (GARA). The researchers of this paper constructed a testbed for evaluating the ability to reserve resource in the GARA system and implemented the GARA code for it. We analyzed the applied results and discussed future research plans.

  • Path-finding on a grid map is a problem generally addressed in the fields of robotics, intelligent agents, and computer games. As technology advances, virtual game worlds tend to be represented more accurately and more realistically, resulting in an excessive increase in the number of grid tiles and in path-search time. In this study, we propose a path-finding algorithm that allows a prompt response to real-time queries by constructing a reduced state space and by precomputing all possible paths in an offline preprocessing stage. In the preprocessing stage, we vertically decompose free space on the grid map, construct a connectivity graph where nodes are the decomposed regions, and store paths between all pairs of nodes in matrix form. In the real-time query stage, we first find the nodes containing the query points and then retrieve the corresponding stored path. The proposed method is simulated for a set of maps that has been used as a benchmark for grid-based path finding. The simulation results show that the state space and the search time decrease significantly.

  • There are several methods of peak-shaving, which reduces grid power demand, electricity bought from electricity utility, through lowering "demand spike" during On-Peak period. An optimization method using linear programming is proposed, which can be used to perform peak-shaving of grid power demand for grid-connected PV+ system. Proposed peak shaving method is based on the forecast data for electricity load and photovoltaic power generation. Results from proposed method are compared with those from On-Off and Real Time methods which do not need forecast data. The results also compared to those from ideal case, an optimization method which use measured data for forecast data, that is, error-free forecast data. To see the effects of forecast error 36 error scenarios are developed, which consider error types of forecast, nMAE (normalizes Mean Absolute Error) for photovoltaic power forecast and MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error) for load demand forecast. And the effects of forecast error are investigated including critical error scenarios which provide worse results compared to those of other scenarios. It is shown that proposed peak shaving method are much better than On-Off and Real Time methods under almost all the scenario of forecast error. And it is also shown that the results from our method are not so bad compared to the ideal case using error-free forecast.

  • This paper proposes a real-time implementation of an optimal operation of a double stage grid connected wind power system incorporating an active power filter (APF). The system is used to supply the nonlinear loads with harmonics and reactive power compensation. On the generator side, a new adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control is proposed to track the maximum wind power point regardless of wind speed fluctuations. Whereas on the grid side, a modified predictive current control (PCC) algorithm is used to control the APF, and allow to ensure both compensating harmonic currents and injecting the generated power into the grid. Also a type 2 fuzzy logic controller is used to control the DC-link capacitor in order to improve the dynamic response of the APF, and to ensure a well-smoothed DC-Link capacitor voltage. The gained benefits from these proposed control algorithms are the main contribution in this work. The proposed control scheme is implemented on a small-scale wind energy conversion system (WECS) controlled by a dSPACE 1104 card. Experimental results show that the proposed T2FLC maintains the DC-Link capacitor voltage within the limit for injecting the power into the grid. In addition, the PCC of the APF guarantees a flexible settlement of real power exchanges from the WECS to the grid with a high power factor operation.
