  • The pressure regulator has been developed as a pressure-control device of propellant tank in KSR-III. The pressurization system of KSR-III is a basic pressurization system composed of pressurant, He tank and propellant tank. The pressure-control regulator is the most important part of gas-pressurized feed system along with He tank, pyrovalve and He fill valve. The first model of the regulator is tested to satisfy in leakage, strength and basic performance. The second model is tested in the overall test of the KSR-III propulsion system using water. From the test result of the second model, we conclude that the capacity of valve(Cv) must be increased in real system. The third model is modified and tested in the overall test of KSR-III propulsion system using propellant. Finally, the pressure-control regulator is qualified from firing test.

  • This paper reviews the state-of-the-art thermoacoustic(TA) modeling techniques and research trend to predict major parameters determining combustion instabilities in lean premixed gas turbine combustors. Linear TA modeling results give us an information on eigenfrequencies and initial growth rate of the instabilities. For the prediction, linear relation equation between acoustic waves and heat release oscillations should be derived in the determined system. Key information for this analysis is to determine the heat release fluctuations in the combustor, which is typically obtained by using n-${\tau}$ function from flame transfer function measurements and/or predictions. Great advancement in the linear TA modeling has been made over a couple of decades, and some successful prediction results have been reported in actual gas turbine combustors. However nonlinear TA model developments which are required to analyze nonlinear system behaviors such as limit cycle saturation and transition phenomena are still limited in a very simple system. In order to fully understand combustion instabilities in a complicated real system, nonlinear flame dynamics and acoustic wave interaction with nonlinear system boundary conditions should be explained from the nonlinear TA model developments.

  • Accurate estimation of forest carbon stocks is important in establishing greenhouse gas reduction plans. In this study, we estimate the spatial distribution of forest carbon stocks using machine learning techniques based on high-resolution remote sensing data and detailed field survey data. The high-resolution remote sensing data used in this study are Landsat indices (EVI, NDVI, NDII) for monitoring vegetation vitality and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data for describing topography. We also used the forest growing stock data from the National Forest Inventory (NFI) for estimating forest biomass. Based on these data, we built a model based on machine learning methods and optimized for Korean forest types to calculate the forest carbon stocks per grid unit. With the newly developed estimation model, we created forest carbon stocks maps and estimated the forest carbon stocks in South Korea. As a result, forest carbon stock in South Korea was estimated to be 432,214,520 tC in 2020. Furthermore, we estimated the loss of forest carbon stocks due to the Donghae-Uljin forest fire in 2022 using the forest carbon stock map in this study. The surrounding forest destroyed around the fire area was estimated to be about 24,835 ha and the loss of forest carbon stocks was estimated to be 1,396,457 tC. Our model serves as a tool to estimate spatially distributed local forest carbon stocks and facilitates accounting of real-time changes in the carbon balance as well as managing the LULUCF part of greenhouse gas inventories.

  • It is important to develop new effective technologies to increase the interruption capacity and to reduce the size of a UB(Gas Circuit Breakers). Major design parameters such as nozzle geometries and interrupting chamber dimensions affect the cooling of the arc and the breaking performance. But it is not easy to test real GCB model in practice as in theory. Therefore, a simulation tool based on a computational fluid dynamics(CFD) algorithm has been developed to facilitate an optimization of the interrupter. Special attention has been paid to the supersonic flow phenomena between contacts and the observation of hat-gas flow for estimating the breaking performance. However, there are many difficult problems in calculating the flow characteristics in a GCB such as shock wave and complex geometries, which may be either static or in relative motion. Although a number of mesh generation techniques are now available, the generation of meshes around complicated, multi-component geometries like a GCB is still a tedious and difficult task for the computational fluid dynamics. This paper presents the CFD program using CFB-CAD integration technique based on Cartesian cut-cell method, which could reduce researcher's efforts to generate the mesh and achieve the accurate representation of the geometry designed by a CAD tools.

  • The emissions trading system stands as a pivotal climate policy in Korea, incentivizing abatement equivalent to 87% of total emissions (as of 2021). As the system likely has a far-reaching impact, it is crucial to understand how the real economic activity, energy sector, as well as environment would be influenced by its implementation. Employing a macroeconometric model, this paper is the first study analyzing the effects of the Korean emissions trading policy. It interconnects the Korean Standard Industrial Classification (Economy), Energy Balance (Energy), and National Inventory Report (Environment), enhancing its real-world explanatory power. We find that a 50% increase in emission permit price over four years results in a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions (-0.043%) and downward shifts in key macroeconomic variables, including real GDP (-0.058%), private consumption (-0.003%), and investment (-0.301%). The price increase in emission permit is deemed crucial for achieving greenhouse gas reduction targets. To mitigate transition risk associated with price shocks, revenue recycling using auction could ensure the sustainability of the economy. This study confirms the comparative advantage of expanded current transfers expenditure over corporate tax reduction, particularly from an economic growth perspective.

  • Characteristics of thermophysical properties and flow structures in a swirl injector at supercritical pressure have been investigated using the kerosene surrogate consisting of four species and various ideal and real gas equations of state. The quantitative comparisons of thermophysical properties for equations of state have been performed. Also, a large eddy simulation and preconditioning technique for getting an effective convergence rate are applied to analyze turbulent flow in a swirl injector. The flow characteristics in the injector has significantly different behaviors depending on the equations of state due to the different thermophysical properties in the injector. The Redlich-Kwong-Peng-Robinson equation of state provides the most suitable results in the wide range of temperature.

  • Droplet vaporization at various ambient pressures is studied numerically by formulating one dimensional evaporation model in the mixture of hydrocarbon fuel and air. The ambient pressure ranged from atmospheric conditions to the supercritical conditions. The modified Soave-Redlich-Kwong state equation is used to account for the real gas effects in the high pressure condition. Non-ideal thermodynamic and transport properties at near critical and supercritical conditions are considered. Some computational results are compared with Sato's experimental data for the validation of calculations. The comparison between predictions and experiments showed quite a good agreement. The droplet lifetime increases with increasing pressure at temperature lower than the critical temperature, however, it decreases with increasing pressure at temperature higher than the critical temperature. The solubility of nitrogen can not be neglected in the high pressure and it becomes higher as the temperature and the pressure go up.

  • A nonlinear dynamic simulation of a small gas turbine engine was performed by using DYNGEN program with various environmental conditions. It was observed that the effect of the bleed air flow rate changed to overall engine performance. The real time linear model which was a function of engine rotor speed was resulted to be close to nonlinear simulation results. For optimal LQR controller, it was considered only fuel flow rate or both fuel flow rate and bleed air rate as inputs. In the comparison of both results, the LQR controller with multi input had better performance than that with single input.

  • In-house code which simulates the performance of pre-burner in staged-combustion liquid-fueled rocket engine was developed and demonstrated. Chemical reaction of pre-burner was modeled based on analytic algorithm of CEA (Chemical Equilibrium with Applications) and gas dynamics model was incorporated with it. Comparison results between in-house code and CEA have shown small relative errors except at very high or very low O/F ratio. Also the performance curve obtained by in-house code revealed that the calculated values follow the overall trend of real engine (RD-8) performance quite well and at steady-state operation, the deviation became very small.
