  • AlN thin film for SAW filter application was deposited on (100) silicon wafers by reactive magnetron sputtering method. The structural characteristics were dependent on the deposition conditions such as sputtering pressure, RF power, substrate temperature, and nitrogen partial pressure. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Electron Probe MicroAnalyzer (EPMA) and Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) have been used to find out structural properties and preferred orientation of AlN thin films. Insertion loss of SAW devices was 28.51 dB and out of band rejection was about 24 dB.

  • As a bench-scale study, transformation of nitrate to nitrogen gas under anoxic condition was determined by using autotrophic denitrifiers containing Thiobacillus denitrificans and elemental sulfur as an electron donor. The research objective is to measure the basic kinetic parameters of autotrophic denitrification reaction on the removal efficiency of nitrate. The results showed that nitrate was almost completely transformed to nitrite in the first 4 days of column operation. After 2 days of accumulation of nitrite, its concentration slowly decreased and the compound was detected less than 0.5 mg/L in 14 days. In the experiment, sulfate concentration in the effluent was the 70~90 mg-S/L and the pH was maintained around pH 7.5. When nitrate concentration of bank filtrate in the real field is considered, this sulfate concentration seems to be acceptable. At 17 cm from the bottom of the column, the effluent showed the highest nitrite concentration, and nitrate concentration decreased rapidly to the Point of 33 cm from the bottom. The results suggest that an appropriate thickness of permeable reactive barriers is about 30 cm.

  • AIN thin films were deposited on silicon and glass substrates by sputtering Al target and introducing mixed gases of argon and nitrogen into reactive RF magnetron sputter. The substrate was not heated to protect the PC (polycarbonate) substrate and the micro-sized pregroove morphology on the surface of PC substrate. But its temperature was around $100^{\circ}C$ due to the self-heating by plasma. The crystallinity, cross-section morphology and refractive index were characterized by changing various deposition parameters.

  • The reactive transport model on the biologically mediated sequential nitrate transformation and its subsequent transport was developed and tested. This model was coded as a reaction module within the RT3D framework (Clement, 1997). Transports of the reasonable six mobile solutes (dissolved organic carbon, $O_2,\;{NO_3}^-,\;{NO_2}^-,\;N_2O,\;N_2$) and two immobile microbes were simulated. The simulation results gave a reasonable match with supposed transport pattern. For the next step, the developed model will be validated against experimental data.

  • In this study, Staphylococcus carnosus isolated from traditional sucuk (Turkish dry-fermented sausage) was used in combination with Lactobacillus plantarum as a lactic culture in sucuk production. Sucuk produced with only L. plantarum was evaluated as a control group. Microbiological, physicochemical, and volatile profile characteristics of sucuk samples were investigated during ripening. In both sausages with S. carnosus and control group, pH value decreased to below 5.0 at the $3^{rd}$ day. In all samples, Aw value decreased as the ripening time progressed. Sausages with S. carnosus showed the higher nonprotein nitrogen (NPN) value than control group. However, the highest mean value for thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) was observed in control group. Enterobacteriaceae dropped to undetectable levels at the $3^{rd}$ day in both groups. S. carnosus increased approximately 1 log unit within the first 3 days of the fermentation. In the presence of S. carnosus, significant changes were observed in only a few volatile compounds.

  • This paper presents annealing characteristics of CrN thin-film strain gauges, which were deposited on glass by DC reactive magnetron sputtering in an argon-nitrogen atmosphere)Ar-(5-~25%)$N_2$. The physical and electrical characteristics of these films investigated with the thickness range 3500$\AA$ of CrN thin films, annealing temperature (100~30$0^{\circ}C$) and annealing time (24-72hr) . The optimized condition of CrN thin-film strain gauges were thickness range of 3500$\AA$ and annealing condition(30$0^{\circ}C$ , 48hr) in Ar-10%$N_2$ deposition atmosphere. Under optimum conditions, the CrN thin-films for strain gauge is obtained a high resistivity, $\rho$=1147.65$\Omega$cm a low temperature coefficient of 11.17. And change in resistance after annealing for the CrN thin film were quitely linear and stable.

  • It is known that metallothionein (MT) plays a role in the scavenging of free radicals, which is produced under various stress conditions. MT may function as an antioxidant that protects against oxidative damage of DNA, protein, and lipid induced by superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical, nitric oxide, and peroxynitrite. This study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that MT also protects from RNA damage induced by peroxynitrite, an important reactive nitrogen species that causes a diversity of pathological processes. A cell-free system was used. RNA damage was detected by the mobility of $tRNA^{Phe}$ in electrophoresis. Cleavages on tRNA were not induced by 3-morpholinosydnomine, which produces peroxynitrite directly. MT induced tRNA damage which was site specific.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of Ta-N thin-film strain gauges as high-temperature strain gauges, which were deposited on Si substrate by DC reactive magnetron sputtering in an argon-nitrogen atmosphere(Ar-(4∼16 %)N$_2$). These films were annealed for 1 hour in 2x10$\^$-6/ Torr vaccum furnace range 500∼1000$^{\circ}C$. The optimized conditions of Ta-N thin-film strain gauges were annealing condition(900$^{\circ}C$, 1 hr.) in 8% N$_2$ gas flow ratio deposition atmosphere. Under optimum conditions, the Ta-N thin-films for strain gauges is obtained a high resistivity, $\rho$=768.93 ${\mu}$Ω cm, a low temperature coefficient of resistance, TCR=-84 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ and a high temporal stability with a good longitudinal gauge factor, GF=4.12.

  • The sintering behavior of titanium-titanium nitride nanocomposite powders has been studied by dilatometry. Titanium. titanium nitride nanocomposite powders were produced by the reactive milling of micron sized titanium powder $(12\;{\mu}m)$ in nitrogen atmosphere. The Ti-TiN nanocomposite powders milled for various durations along with the initial micron sized Ti powders were then sintered in the temperature range of $450-1000^{\circ}C$ by a constant rate of heating $(10^{\circ}C/min)$. The linear shrinkage, shrinkage rate, activation energy for sintering and microstructure has been studied and discussed as a function of milling time.

  • If sodium azide is impinged by certain reasons, it will be produced explosives by heavy metals and toxic materials. But it is used propellent for inflating automotive safety bags and the other chemical manufacturing purpose. The investigation of thermal hazard potential of sodium azide itself and with polymers ate very important because some parts of automotives, transporting vessels of reactive chemicals and many any other constituents of structures in factories are made of polymers. The range of decomposition temperatures are about $360-380^{\circ}C$, even if it depends on heating rate and sample weight. Thermal decomposition heat of sodium azide in air is higher than in nitrogen atmosphere, because the former is included oxidizing heats of sodium metal which is made by decomposition of sodium azide to end. Especially decomposition temperature of polymers are increased on the order of bonding energy between atoms in hydrocarbon moleculars.
