  • Aluminum matrix composites reinforced by fine steel wires were fabricated by squeeze casting process. Preforms made of fine steel wires were prepared with different surface conditions, namely uncoated(TN), carbo-nitriding treated(TT), and brass coated(TA). Squeeze casting were performed under the pressure of $1500kg/cm^2$ for 3min. during solidification, and pouring temp. of the melt being $750^{\circ}C$ and the steel mold being preheated at $250^{\circ}C$. Microstructural characteristics were evaluated, particularly concerned with the effect of the surface conditions of the preforms. The results obtained from this study are like these. TN specimens show partially non-wetted regions, due to easy formation of oxides on the surface of the fine steel wires. TT specimens show no interfacial reaction between the steel wires and the aluminum alloy matrix, possibly due to the formation of carbo-nitrided zone on the surface of the steel wires. TA specimens show excellent wettabillity between the reinforced steel wires and the aluminum alloy matrix and very thin interfacial zone is formed between them. During the solution hardening treatment of TA specimens, thickness of the interfacial reaction zones were increased with the solution treating time. TA specimens show typical ductile fracture in tensile test, but TT specimens show brittle fracture possibly due to the formation of the brittle hard surface on the steel wires during carbo-nitriding treatments. TA specimens which were reinforced with 40 vol.% of the fine steel wires exhibit high tensile strength of $77.1kgf/mm^2$ and impact value of $8.1kgf-m/cm^2$.

  • The waste water treatment facility at rural and mountainous region in catchment areas of dams should be small scale. The wastewater treatment facility of small scale has some specification as follows;1)simple process, 2)low maintenance cost, and 3)high removal efficiency. So, we developed the bioreactor which can be satisfied with the specification of small scale waste water treatment facility. The bioreactor consisted of the anoxic and oxic zone. The two zones were effectively separated by cone type baffle. By the effective separation through CTB, the nitrification and denitrification reaction occurred effectively. Therefore, the removal efficiency of total nitorgen (TN) increased compared to other types of baffle. And, we put into the bio activated media in oxic zone to increase the concentration and activity of microbiology. The media contained the components which were made of many kinds of the minerals to increase the activity of microbiology. Additionally, we observed that the phosphate removal efficiency increased by bio activated media. This is resulted from the coagulation-sedimentation reaction by mineral in components. The average removal efficiencies of TN and TP during Run 2 were 69 and 89% which were 4 and 25% higher than those during Run 1 without the MA, respectively. For BOD, COD, SS and TKN, the average removal efficiencies at Run 2 were slightly higher than those at Run 1. Therefore, we could maintain the high concentration and high activity of microbiology through bioreactor developed in this study. And the removal efficiency of TN and TP increased.

  • Ni/Al ('/' denotes deposition sequence) contacts were deposited on Al-implanted 4H-SiC for ohmic contact formation, and the conduction properties were characterized and compared with those of Ni-only contacts. The thicknesses of the Ni and Al thin film were 30 nm and 300 nm, respectively, and the films were sequentially deposited bye-beam evaporation without vacuum breaking. Rapid thermal anneal (RTA) temperature was varied as follows : $840^{\circ}C$, $890^{\circ}C$, and $940^{\circ}C$. The specific contact resistivity of the Ni contact was about $^{\sim}2\;{\pm}\;10^{-2}\;{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$, However, with the addition of Al overlayer, the specific contact resistivity decreased to about $^{\sim}2\;{\pm}\;10^{-4}\;{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$, almost irrespective of RTA temperature. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the Ni contact confirmed the existence of various Ni silicide phases, while the results of Ni/Al contact samples revealed that Al-contaning phases such as $Al_3Ni$, $Al_3Ni_2$, $Al_4Ni_3$, and $Ab_{3.21}Si_{0.47}$ were additionally formed as well as the Ni silicide phases. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) spectrum showed interfacial reaction zone mainly consisting of Al and Si at the contact interface, and it was also shown that considerable amounts of Si and C have diffused toward the surface. This indicates that contact resistance lowering of the Ni/Al contacts is related with the formation of the formation of interfacial reaction zone containing Al and Si. From these results, possible mechanisms of contact resistance lowering by the addition of Al were discussed.

  • Zinc coatings provide the most effective and economical way of protecting steel against corrosion. There are three types of galvanizing lines typically used in production line in galvanizing industries,Galvanize (GI) coating (Zn-0.1-0.3%Al), Galfan coating (Zn-5%Al), Galvalume(GL) coating (45%Zn-Al). In continuous Galvanizing lines, the immersed bath hardware (e.g. bearings, sink, stabilizer, and corrector rolls, and also support roll arms and snout tip) are subjected to corrosion and wear failure. Understanding the reaction of these materials with the molten Zn alloy is becomes scientific and commercial interest. To investigate the reaction with molten Zn alloys, static immersion test performed for 4, 8, 16, and 24 Hr. Two different baths used for the static immersion, which are molten Zn and molten Zn-55%Al. Microstructures characterization of each of the materials and intermetallic layer formed in the reaction zone was performed using optical microscope, SEM and EDS. The thickness of the reaction layer is examined using image analysis to determine the kinetics of the reaction. The phase dominated by two distinct phase which are eutectic carbide and matrix. The morphology of the intermetallic phase formed by molten Zn is discrete phase showing high dissolution of the material, and the intermetallic phase formed by Zn-55wt%Al is continuous. Aluminum reacts readily with the materials compare to Zinc, forming iron aluminide intermetallic layer ($Fe_2Al_5$) at the interface and leaving zinc behind.

  • Cellulose carbonate was prepared by the reaction of cellulose pulp and $CO_2$ with treatment reagents, such as aqueous $Zncl_2$ (20-40 wt%) solution, acetone or ethyl acetate, at -5-$0^{\circ}C$ and 30-40 bar ($CO_2$) for 2 hr. Among the treatment reagents, ethyl acetate was the most effective. Cellulose carbonate was dissolved in 10% sodium hydroxide solution containing zinc oxide up to 3 wt% at -5-$0^{\circ}C$. Intrinsic viscosities of raw cellulose and cellulose carbonate were measured with an Ubbelohde viscometer using 0.5 M cupriethylenediamine hydroxide (cuen) as a solvent at $20^{\circ}C$ according to ASTM D1795 method. The molecular weight of cellulose was rarely changed by carbonation. Solubility of cellulose carbonate was tested by optical microscopic observation, UV absorbance and viscosity measurement. Phase diagram of cellulose carbonate was obtained by combining the results of solubility evaluation. Maximum concentration of cellulose carbonate for soluble zone was increased with increasing zinc oxide content. Cellulose carbonate solution in good soluble zone was transparent and showed the lowest absorbance and the highest viscosity. The cellulose carbonate and its solution were stable in refrigerator (-$5^{\circ}C$ and atmospheric pressure).

  • This study focuses on seismic behaviour of tall piers characterized by high slender ratio. Two analysis models were developed based on elastic-plastic hinged beam element and elastic-plastic fiber beam element, respectively. The effect of the division density of elastic-plastic hinged beam element on seismic demand was discussed firstly to seek a rational analysis model for tall piers. Then structural seismic behaviour such as the formation of plastic hinges, the development of plastic zone, and the displacement at the top of the tall piers were investigated through incremental dynamic analysis. It showed that the seismic behaviour of a tall pier was quite different from that of a lower pier due to higher modes contributions. In a tall pier, an additional plastic zone may occur at the middle height of the pier with the increase of seismic excitation. Moreover, the maximum curvature reaction at the bottom section and maximum lateral displacement at the top turned out to be seriously out of phase for a tall pier due to the higher modes effect, and thus pushover analysis can not appropriately predict the local displacement capacity.

  • The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the effects of fuel stratification on reducing the pressure-rise rate at high load in HCCI combustion. It was found that fuel stratification offers good potential to achieve a staged combustion event and reduced pressure-rise rates. The engine is fueled with Di-Methyl Ether (DME) which has unique 2-stage heat release. Numerical analysis is conducted with single and multi-zones model and detailed chemical reaction scheme is done by chemkin and senkin. Calculation result shows that proper fuel stratification prolongs combustion duration and reduce pressure rise rate. Besides IMEP, combustion efficiency and indicated thermal efficiency keep constant. However, too wide fuel stratification increases pressure rise rate and CO and NOx emissions in exhaust gas.

  • Presently, pedestrian's signal time models in korea are not considering Vulnerable-Pedestrian. So, the safety of Vulnerable-Pedestrian is being threatener and the number of accidents is increasing. Besides, the existing operational system for pedestrians can't offer the cross signal time in road corresponded the changing environment when the school zone is revitalized and the Silver zone is introduced for Vulnerable-Pedestrian. Conclusively, Vulnerable-Pedestrian's signal time models which are able to consider classified Vulnerable-Pedestrian speed, Vulnerable-Pedestrian perception-reaction time, Vulnerable-Pedestrian Spare(congestion-delay) time are suggested by the result of experiment in virtual crosswalk. the application of suggested models in this study to the site. It is possible to use as a basic stuff on study of pedestrian's signal time and expected to contribute the safety and mobility in future.

  • Experiments have been performed to investigate the structure of axisymmetric hydrogen diffusion flame in a supersonic coflow air. The characteristics and structure of supersonic flames are compared with those of subsonic flames as the velocity of coflow air increases from subsonic to supersonic velocity of Mach 1.8. Also, the subsonic and supersonic flow fields are analyzed numerically for the non-reacting conditions and the possible flame contours indicated by fuel mass fraction are compared with the measured OH radical distributions. It is found that the flame structure indicates more like a partially premixed flame as the coflow air velocity is increased from subsonic to supersonic regimes; strong reaction zone indicated by intense OH signal is found at the center, which is different from subsonic flame cases. And it is shown that the fuel jet passes along the recirculation zones behind the bluff-body fuel nozzle resulting in relatively long mixing time. This is believed to be the reason of the partially premixed flame characteristics found in the present supersonic flames.

  • In this paper, the undoped and Co-doped $Zn_4SnSe_6$ single crystals grown by the chemical transporting reaction(CTR) method using iodine as a transporting agent are investigated. For the crystal growth, the temperature gradient of the CTR furnace was kept at $680^{\circ}C$ for the source zone and at $780^{\circ}C$ for the growth zone for 7days. It was found from the analysis of x-ray diffraction that the $Zn_4SnSe_6$ and $Zn_4SnSe_6Co^{2+}$ compounds have a monoclinic structure. The direct optical energy band gap of the $Zn_4SnSe_6$ and $Zn_4SnSe_6Co^{2+}$ single crystals at 300K were found to be 2.146eV and 2.042eV.
