  • An experiment using high preheated air in a turbulent non-premixed flame was performed to investigate the effects of high preheated air on the combustion characteristics. Combustion using high preheated and diluted air with flue gas is a new technology which enables NO emission to be reduced. In this study, Na was used as diluent and propane as fuel. Combustion characteristics, especially the distributions of the flame temperature, NO concentration and OH radical intensity were examined under the condition of 300 K, 600 K, 1000 K in terms of the combustion air temperature, and also under the condition of the dilution level from 21% to 13% in terms of oxygen concentration. As the preheated air temperature increased, it appeared that the flame length became shorter, maximum flame temperature increased, the reaction region moved to upstream, and NO concentration increased, but the flame temperature's fluctuation was reduced. In opposite, it was shown with decrement of oxygen concentration at the maximum temperature that both maximum value and the gradient of the flame temperature decreased, and NO emission also decreased considerably, but its fluctuation became larger, being inclined to be unstable.

  • Tea catechins, the most important compounds in tea polyphenols, can efficiently scavenge superoxide anion free-radical ($O_2$.), hydroxyl radical. (.OH) The mechanism of scavenging active oxygen free radicals was investigated by ESR spin trapping technique and Chemiluminescence. Results showed that various tea catechins constitute an antioxidant cycle in accordance with the decreasing order of the first reductive potential, and produce the effect of cooperative strength each other. Esterificated catechins could scavenge active oxygen free radicals more effectively than the non-esterificated ones. When.OH and $O_2$.- were scavenged by (-)-epigallocatechin gallate [(-)- EGCG], the stoichiometric factors were 6, and the rate constants of scavenging reaction reached $7.71{\times}10^6$ and $3.52{\times}10^{11}$ L $mmol^{-1}s^{-1}$, respectively. In the mean time, tea catechins could scavenge superoxide anion fiee radical ($O_2$-.) and hydroxyl radical (.OH) in a dose dependent manner. But at higher concentration or pH value, tea catechins can induce the prooxidant.

  • Recently, enormous research efforts have been focused on the development of non-precious catalysts to replace Pt for electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and to reduce the cost of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). In recent years, heteroatom (N, B, and P) doped carbon nanostructures have been received enormous importance as a non-precious electrode materials for oxygen reduction. Doping of foreign atom into carbon is able to modify electronic properties of carbon materials. In this study, nitrogen and boron doped carbon nanostructures were synthesized by using a facile and cost-effective thermal annealing route and prepared nanostructures were used as a non-precious electrocatalysts for the ORR in alkaline electrolyte. The nitrogen doped carbon nanocapsules (NCNCs) exhibited higher activity than that of a commercial Pt/C catalyst, excellent stability and resistance to methanol oxidation. The boron-doped carbon nanostructure (BC) prepared at $900^{\circ}C$ showed higher ORR activity than BCs prepared lower temperature (800, $700^{\circ}C$). The heteroatom doped carbon nanomaterials could be promising candidates as a metal-free catalysts for ORR in the PEMFCs.

  • Gravity pressure vessels find their use in the wet oxidation of sewage sludge, which can be defined as the oxidation of organic and inorganic substances in an aqueous solution or suspension by means of oxygen or air at elevated pressures and temperatures. Numerical analyses were carried out for investigating the flow characteristics and wet air oxidation in the reaction vessel with various conditions such as supply oxidation and the supply positions of oxidation, etc. Wet air oxidation is promoted in the vicinity of bottom in the reactor with increase of oxygen supply. Also, it is the best condition to the oxidation supply position of 150 m and oxidation flow of 0.06 kg/s in the GPV reactor as the remnant of sludge and creation of organic acids.

  • Recently, free radicals such as active oxygen species, nitric oxide, etc are believed to be one of the key substances in physiological and pathological, toxicological phenomena, and oxidative damages, and all organism have defencing system against such as free radicals. Formation and extinction of free radicals may be regulated through bio-redox system, in which various enzymes and compounds should be involved in very complicated manner. Thus, direct and non-invasive measurement of in vivo free radical reactions with living animals must be essential to understand the role of free radicals in pathophysiological phenomena. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) is very selective and sensitive technique to detect free radicals, but a conventional ESR spectrometer has large detect in application to living animals, since high frequent microwave is absorbed with water, resulting in generation of high fever in living body. In order to estimate in vivo free radical reactions in living whole animals, we develop in vivo ESR-CT technique using nitroxide radicals as spin probes. Nitroxide radicals and their reduced forms, hydroxylamines, are known to interact with various redox systems. We found that! ! the signal decay due to reduction of nitroxyl radicals is influenced by aging, inspired oxygen concentration, ischemia-referfusion injury, radiation, etc. In the present paper, I will introduce in vivo ESR technique and my laboratory recent results concerning non-invasive evaluation of free radical reactions in living mice.

  • Flue gases in the iron foundry consist of 15~20% CO2 as an air pollution gas whose emission should be mitigated in order to protect the environment. In the present study, ultrafine powders of NixZn1-xFe2O4 as a potential catalyst for the CO2 decomposition were prepared by the coprecipitation methods. Oxygen deficient ferrites (MeFe2O4-$\delta$) can decompose CO2 as C and O2 at a low temperature of about 30$0^{\circ}C$. The XRD result of synthesized ferrites showed the spinel structure of ferrites and ICP-AES and EDS quantitative analyses showed the composition similar with initial molar ratios of the mixed solution prior to reaction. The BET surface area of the (Ni, Zn)-ferrites was about 77~89.5$m^2$/g and their particle size was observed about 10~20 nm. The CO2 decomposition efficiency of the oxygen deficient (Nix, Zn1-x)-ferrites was the highest at x=0.3, and the ternary (Ni, Zn)-ferrites was better than that of binary Ni-ferrites.

  • The reduction of NO by hydrocarbons was investigated over Cu/Al$_2$O$_3$catalysts using a stainless steel flow reactor under highly oxidising diesel exhaust conditions(up to 15%). Three different Cu loadings(1,5 and 10wt.%) on an $Al_2$O$_3$support were prepared and characterized using spectroscopic techniques. The catalytic activity tests show that different Cu loadings as well as temperature, oxygen, and hydrocarbon concentration levels significantly influence the NO reduction. Increasing Cu loadings up to 5 and 10wt.% decreases the catalytic activities for NO reduction due to the formation of a bulk crystalline CuO phase, as observed from XRD and SEM images. In particular, the visualization of the copper dispersion on the surface using the SEM-BEI technique provides information on the extent of copper saturation, particle size, and the effects on NO reduction. However, the lower Cu loading(1 wt.%) increases the catalytic activity with a temperature window of 720-810K, thereby favoring the formation of well dispersed isolated Cu species, e.g. Cu(sup)2+ ions, which is related to selective NO reduction. The effects of other reaction parameters, such as oxygen, the hydrocarbon level and type, and byproduct emissions are further discussed.

  • Hydrogen production through proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is expeditiously receiving international attention for renewable energy sources as well as energy storage system applications due to its environmentally friendly uses. A series of $Ir_{0.2}Ru_{0.8}O_2$ $Ir_{0.5}Ru_{0.8}O_2$ & $IrO_2$ catalysts were synthesized and electrochemically evaluated by using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) technique. Furthermore, the PEMWE performances of full cells were evaluated by recording I-V Curves. The developed PEMWE stack was also operated in combination with a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) to demonstrate the discrete regenerative fuel cell (DRFC) performances. Produced hydrogen and oxygen from PEMWE were used as a fuel to operate PEMFC to establish a DRFC system.

  • The structural and electronic properties of $XAu_{16^-}$ (X = S or O) have been studied by the scalar relativistic all-electron density functional calculations, in which a particular attention is paid to the stability of various $XAu_{16^-}$ structures. We find that an X-encapsulated golden cage ($XAu_{16^-}$) represents an ionic character whereas in the other structures, adsorption characters are represented by covalent bonding. Especially, in S@$Au_{16^-}$, electrons are donated from the S atom to $Au_{16^-}$. The most stable $XAu_{16^-}$ structures exhibit a small HOMO-LUMO energy gap, indicating that they could be chemically reactive. We also calculated the activation energy barriers of the transition between the most stable exohedral and endohedral adsorption configurations as well as their reaction energies. Our results demonstrate that the activation barrier in the $OAu_{16^-}$ is lower than in $SAu_{16^-}$. This is associated with the smaller atomic radius of oxygen than that of sulfur.

  • For the development of high efficiency and low emission combustion systems, high temperature air combustion technology has been tested by utilizing preheated air over 1100 K and exhaust gas recirculation. In this system, combustion air is diluted with large amount of exhaust gases ($N_2$, $CO_2$), such that the oxygen concentration is relatively low in the reaction zone, leading to low flame temperature. Since, the temperature fluctuations and sound emissions form the flame are small and flame luminosity is low, the combustion mode is expected to be flameless or mild combustion. Experiment was performed to investigate the turbulent flame structure and $NO_X$ emission characteristics in the high temperature air combustion focused on coflowing jet diffusion flames which has a fundamental structure of many practical combustion systems. The effect of turbulence has also been evaluated by installing perforated plate in the oxidizer inlet nozzle. LPG was used as a fuel. Results showed that even though $NO_X$ emission is sensitive to the combustion air temperature, the present high temperature air combustion system produce low $NO_X$ emission because it is operated in low oxygen concentration condition in excess of dilution.
