This study was carried out to find the effect of ${\gamma}$ -irradiation on the physical properties of alginic acid and ${\lambda}$-carrageenan solution. Alginic acid and ${\lambda}$-carrageenan aqueous solution were irradiated with $Co^{60}$${\gamma}$ -rays in dosages ranging from 3 to 100 kGy, and then the molecular weight, viscosity and color were measured. The molecular weight of alginic acid and ${\lambda}$-carrageenan solution were decreased as the ${\gamma}$ -irradiation dosage increased. In addition, the viscosity of irradiated alginic acid and ${\lambda}$-carrageenan solution were decreased depending upon the ${\gamma}$ -irradiation dosage, too. The high dosage irradiated alginic acid and ${\lambda}$-carrageenan solution's color were changed to yellow. These results suggest that low dosage of ${\gamma}$ -irradiation from 3 to 20 kGy is a very effective method for producing low-molecular alginic acid and ${\lambda}$-carrageenan.
The embryonic and larval development of Chelon lauvergnii (Eydoux & Souleyet) was surveyed by incubating artificially inseminated eggs with parent fishes obtained at Kang-wha island in the mid-western coastal area of Korea on June, 1997. The fertilized eggs were transparent, spherical in shape, measuring 0.95~1.08 mm in diameter, having a large oil globule, and their perivitelline space narrow, and began to hatch at 40 hrs. in water temperature $22{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched larvae were 2.35~2.68 mm in total length with 23 myomeres, anus opened, mouth closed, preanal length 58.7~61.6% of total length, oil globule located in posterior end of yolk sac. Melanophores, branch in shape, were distributed mainly along the ventro-lateral region of trunk part and a few on the anterior end of caudal part and surface of oil globule. The larvae measuring 3.08~3.36 mm in total length absorbed yolk material completely in 3 days after hatching, in which air bladder began to appear and mouth opened. In 8 days after hatching, the larva was measured 5.09 mm in total length, its posterior end of notochord began to flex upward and the caudal fin rays differentiated as 7, finfold of the second dorsal and anal fins appeared. In this time, melanophores, branch in shape, were concentrated in the anterior half region of the caudal part and a few also distributed on the top of head, snout region, ventral margin of lower jaw and isthmus region. In 12 days after hatching, the larva measuring 8.48 mm in total length completed all the fins (D. IV-9; P1. 16; P2. I, 5; A. II, 9) and reached to the juvenile stage. Melanophores, in this time, were distributed on the mid-lateral region of the caudal part in enlargment than before and a few also found in the dorso-lateral region of the trunk part, and in the cheek region.
The aucha perch, Coreoperca kawamebari was collected in Tam-jin river from February to June 1998. It was reared in the laboratory and observed the spawning behavior and early life history. Spawning season was from mid of April to the end of May in the Tam-jin river. The fertilized eggs were demersal of adhesive, transparent and spherical in shape. Egg diameter was 2.21~2.65 mm with several oil globule of 0.058~0.343 mm. Hatching occurred about 194 hours 23 minutes after fertilization at water temperature of $18{\sim}22^{\circ}C$. Newly-hatched larvae were 5.09~5.68 mm in total length(TL, mean: 5.38mm) with 10~11+18=28~29 myotomes and opened mouth and anus. Melanophores were distributed on the eye lens, on the head, around the yolk, on the dorsal part and the abdominal region of the trunk. After hatching 5 days larvae attained 6.12~6.68 mm in TL (mean: 6.47 mm), and the yolk sac was completely absorbed and transformed to postlarva stage. The larvae reached to the juvenile stage with all the fins were formed with complete set of fin rays (D. XII-12~13; A. III-8~10; P. 11~13; V. I-4~5) at the 22 days after hatching and of the larvae was 11.54 mm in total length. In 32 days after hatching, the juvenile was 13.05 mm in TL. This period was similar to adult in body form and the spot.
The early life history and reproductive ecology of Siniperca scherzeri were studied to obtain fundamental information in aquaculture and reinforcement of natural population in Soyang Lake, Buk-myon, Chunchon-shi, Kangwon-do from June to October 1996. Symptric species with adult fishes (+1 ages) of Siniperca scherzeri were 11 species belonging to 6 families and 10 genera and those with Juveniles (2~3 months) were 5 species belonging to 4 families and 5 genera. The sex radio of this species were 1 (female, 85) : 1.24 (male, 105). Adult and juvenile of this species were predominantly piscivores. Bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus, Zacco platypus, common carp, Cyprinus carpio, unidentified fish and shrimp were important components of the food items. The spherical eggs were demersal and separative without a colorless transparent chorion and slightly yellowish yolk containing one large oil globule (0.5~0.7mm). The egg just after fertilization were measuring 1.72~2.05mm (n=30), and expanded to 2.27~2.58mm (n=30) in diameter after 30 min. Hatching occurred 130~155 hrs after fertilization at water temperature of $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ and newly hatched larvae measuring 5.5~7.1mm in total length. In the newly hatched larvae, numerous branched malanophores were distributed on the yolk and abdomen of caudal peduncle. In ten-day old larvae, the yolk was mostly absorbed and the head spines and the teeth were well developed. All fin rays were formed and total length of the larvae were reached 13.6~15.6mm at 20 days after hatching. In fifty-five day old larvae were similar in both body shape and color to adult. The juvenile stage at 4 months after hatching were attained 86.4~95.3mm (n=7) in total length and 8.77~14.78g (n=7) in body weight.
Rapid maxillary expansion is widely used for the correction of anteroposterior discrepancies, constriction of the maxillary arch, etc. This experiment was undertaken to examine the serial changes in the osteogenesis as well as the collagen fiber bundles in the intermaxillary suture during the rapid maxillary expansion treatment. Four young female dogs aged 6 to 8 months old and not showing menarche yet were used for the experiment. The maxillary impression of dogs were taken, expansion device cast and Hyrax screw soldered at the midline in the 1st premolar area. RME device was delivered to the dogs and the activation of 0.25 mm per quarter-turn was done 2 times per day for 10 days until 5 mm separation was made. Separation of the maxilla was confirmed by X-ray. The animals were sacrificed on 0, 15, 30, 60 days from the finish of maxillary separation and preparations for light microscopy and surface electron microscopy were made. The sutures were cut into frontal serial sections for examination of the histological reactions. The following results were obtained and the conclusions made. 1. The edges of the two palatal plates bordering the midpalatal suture which at the beginning of the retention period were mainly composed of compact bone, underwent extensive resorption followed by new bone formation and gradually became spongy bone rich in bone marrow which in the 60 day retention animal became the compact bone with short intermaxillary suture space. During this transformation, newly formed trabecular bone tissues were added to the original margin. 2. Throughout the expansion period, the collagen fibers underwent successive changes such as stretching, loss of polarity, and finally fibrillogenesis. Towards the end of the expansion procedure, sharpey's fiber formation in newly formed bones were observed. 3. Bony spicules were found in the initial stage of retention on occlusal topographic X-rays, which later were confirmed to have ossified. 4. Judging from the histological changes occuring during the experimental expansion, excessive expansion will cause an excessive bleeding, and retard the remodeling of intermaxillary suture. According to the above results, the bone remodeling after rapid maxillary expansion was preceded by the migration of migratory cells into the intermaxillary suture area. The bone remodeling phenomena were on-going during the 2 months retention sample.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate how airway changes influence facial growth during puberty in Korean children. Methods: Thirty-six patients aged 9 to 11 (mean age: 10.7 years) were selected. Cephalograms and hand-wrist x-rays were taken at pre-treatment (T1) and post-treatment (T2). The sample was divided into narrow (5.2 - 8.6 mm, AW-Narrow), medium (8.9 - 11.5 mm, AW-Medium), and wide (11.7 - 16.0 mm, AW-Wide) groups according to the airway width at T1. Cephalometric measurements at T1, T2 and growth from T1 to T2 were compared between groups. Results: The degree of increase in airway size in each group was 4.55 mm, 3.84 mm and 1.94 mm in the AW-Narrow, AW-Medium, and AW-Wide groups, respectively. Moreover, the differences were statistically significant. The significant smallest posterior facial height was found in the AW-Narrow group at T1. For the growth values from T1 to T2, the AW-Narrow group showed significantly larger values of PFH/AFH, facial axis, ANS (T1 - T2), and Gn (T1 - T2) than the AW-Medium group. Conclusions: The compensational changes in the airway width and facial growth were found in the narrow group. Surgical approach of the airway to prevent unfavorable facial growth in these years of age should be carried out, but with careful deliberation because these problems may be improved naturally.
Bone changes are common sequela of irradiation in growing animal. The purpose of this study was to establish an experimental model of radiation-induced bone loss in growing mice using micro-computed tomography (${\mu}CT$). The extent of changes following 2 Gy gamma irradiation ($2Gy{\cdot}min^{-1}$) was studied at 4, 8 or 12 weeks after exposure. Mice that received 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 or 4.0 Gy of gamma-rays were examined 8 weeks after irradiation. Tibiae were analyzed using ${\mu}CT$. Serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and biomechanical properties were measured and the osteoclast surface was examined. A significant loss of trabecular bone in tibiae was evident 8 weeks after exposure. Measurements performed after irradiation showed a dose-related decrease in trabecular bone volume fraction (BV/TV) and bone mineral density (BMD), respectively. The best-fitting dose-response curves were linear-quadratic. Taking the controls into accounts, the lines of best fit were as follows: BV/TV (%) = $0.9584D^2-6.0168D+20.377$ ($r^2$ = 0.946, D = dose in Gy) and BMD ($mg{\cdot}cm^{-3}$) = $8.8115D^2-56.197D+194.41$ ($r^2$ = 0.999, D = dose in Gy). Body weight did not differ among the groups. No dose-dependent differences were apparent among the groups with regard to mechanical and anatomical properties of tibia, serum ALP and osteoclast activity. The findings provide the basis required for better understanding of the results that will be obtained in any further studies of radiation-induced bone responses.

Background : Pulmonary sequestration is a rare congenital malformation, which is manifested by formation of nonfunctioning lung tissue lacking normal communication with the tracheobronchial tree. The preoperative diagnostic rate has been relatively low, and without consideration of pulmonary sequestration, unexpected bleeding from aberrant vessels may be a serious problem during the operation. The purpose of our study is to describe the clinical features of pulmonary sequestration based on a review of 15 cases treated by operation. Method : Fifteen patients with pulmonary sequestration who had undergone surgical treatment from 1991 through May 1996 at Yongdong Severance Hospital and Severance Hospital were reviewed retrospectively. Results : The mean age of the patients was 22.5 years (range 5~57), and male to female ratio was 9 : 6. Clinical presentations varied from recurrent respiratory infections such as fever, cough, and sputum or chest pain to no symptom. The chest simple X-rays showed multicystic shadow(10/15) and solid mass-like shadow(5/15). The chest CT scans, done in twelve cases, showed multicystic lesion with or without lung infiltration(8/12), solid mass-like lesion(4/12), The chest MRIs, done in three cases, revealed the aberrant arteries originating from descending aorta(2/3). Aortograms, done in four cases, showed the aberrant arteries originating from descending thoracic aorta(2/4), abdominal aorta(I/4), and intercostal artery(1/4). and the venous returns were via the pulmonary veins. Pulmonary sequestration was considered preoperatively in six patients of fifteen. Other preliminary diagnosis were lung tumor(3/15), lung abscess(21/15), bronchiectasis(2/15), and mediastinal tumor(2/15). In the operative findings, twelve cases were of intralobar type and three cases of extralobar type. The left lower lobe was most often affected(9/15) and one extralobar sequestration was in the pericardium. The aberrant arteries originated from descending thoracic aorta(6/15), abdominal aorta(1/15), internal thoracic arteries (2/15), intercostal artery(1/15), pericardiophrenic artery(1/15), but in four cases, the origins could not be defined. There was no mortality or complication postoperatively. Conclusion : In our study, preoperative diagnostic rate was relatively low, and clinical features were similar to previous reports. Preoperative vigorous diagnostic approach including aortography is strongly advocated not only for its diagnostic value, but also for accurate localization of the aberrant vessels, which is major concern to surgical procedure.
Background: The diffusing capacity of the lung is influenced by multiple factors such as age, sex, height, weight, ethnicity and smoking status. Although a prediction equation for the diffusing capacity of Korea was proposed in the mid-1980s, this equation is not used currently. The aim of this study was to develop a new prediction equation for the diffusing capacity for Koreans. Methods: Using the data of the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a total of 140 nonsmokers with normal chest X-rays were enrolled in this study. Results: Using linear regression analysis, a new predicting equation for diffusing capacity was developed. For men, the following new equations were developed: carbon monoxide diffusing capacity (DLco)=-10.4433-0.1434${\times}$age (year)+0.2482${\times}$heights (cm); DLco/alveolar volume (VA)=6.01507-0.02374${\times}$age (year)-0.00233${\times}$heights (cm). For women the prediction equations were described as followed: DLco=-12.8895-0.0532${\times}$age (year)+0.2145${\times}$heights (cm) and DLco/VA=7.69516-0.02219${\times}$age (year)-0.01377${\times}$heights (cm). All equations were internally validated by k-fold cross validation method. Conclusion: In this study, we developed new prediction equations for the diffusing capacity of the lungs of Koreans. A further study is needed to validate the new predicting equation for diffusing capacity.

The X ray has been widely used in both diagnosis and treatment. Recently, a miniature X ray tube has been developed for radiotherapy. The miniature X ray tube is directly inserted into the body irradiated, so that X rays can be guided to a target at various incident angles according to collimator geometry and, thus, minimize patient dose. If such features of the miniature X ray tube can be applied to development of X ray imaging as well as radiation treatment, it is expected to open a new chapter in the field of diagnostic X ray. However, the miniature X ray tube requires an added filter and a collimator for diagnostic purpose because it was designed for radiotherapy. Therefore, a collimator and an added filter were manufactured for the miniature X ray tube, and mounted on. In this study, we evaluated beam characteristics of the miniature X ray tube for diagnostic X ray system and accuracy of measuring the HVL. We used the Si PIN Photodiode type Piranha detector (Piranha, RTI, Sweden) and estimated the HVL of the miniature X ray tube with added filter and without added filter. Through an another measurement using Al filter, we evaluated the accuracy of the HVL obtained from a direct measurement using the automatic HVL calculation function provided by the Piranha detector. As a result, the HVL of the miniature X ray tube was increased around 1.9 times with the added filter mounted on. So we demonstrated that the HVL was suitable for diagnostic X ray system. In the case that the added filter was not mounted on, the HVL obtained from use of the automatic HVL calculation function provided by Piranha detector was 50% higher than the HVL estimated using Al filter. Therefore, the HVL automatic measurement from the Piranha detector cannot be used for the HVL calculation. However, when the added filter was mounted on, the HVL automatic measurement value using the Piranha detector was approximately 15% lower than the estimated value using Al filter. It implies that the HVL automatic measurement can be used to estimate the HVL of the miniature X ray tube with the added filter mounted on without a more complicated measurement method using Al filter. It is expected that the automatic HVL measurement provided by the Piranha detector enables to make kV-X ray characterization easier.
