The crack formation and the resistance of ITO film on PET substrate with a thickness of 20 nm were investigated as a function of strain. The onset strain for the increase of resistance increased with increasing strain rate, suggesting the crack initiation is dependent on the strain rate. Electrical resistance increased at the strain of 1.6% at the strain rates below $10^{-4}/sec$ while it increased at ${\sim}2%$ at the strain rates above $10^{-3}/sec$. The critical strain at which the cracks were formed is close to the proportional limit. Upon loading, the initial cracks perpendicular to the tensile axis were observed and propagated the whole sample width with increasing strain. The spacing between horizontal cracks is thought to be determined by the fracture strength and the interfacial strength between ITO and PET. The crack density increased with increasing strain. However, the effect of the strain rate on the crack density was less pronounced in ITO/PET with 20 nm ITO thickness than ITO/PET with 125 nm ITO thickness, the strength of ITO film is thought to increase as the thickness on ITO film decreases. The absence of cracks on ITO film at a strain as close as 1.5% can be attributed to the compressive residual stress of ITO film which was developed during cooling after the coating process. The higher critical strain for the onset of the resistance increase and the crack initiation of ITO/PET with a thinner ITO film (20 nm) can be linked with the higher strength of the thinner ITO film.

Polymeric composites exhibit highly nonlinear and rate dependent behavior during loading and unloading in off-axis directions. The equilibrium state of stress during loading is lower than the state of stress produced at finite strain rates. The amount of stress relaxation during loading decreases. Interestingly, however, the stress goes up to reach to the equilibrium state of stress for a fixed displacement during unloading. The unloading behavior is quite similar to the loading behavior. The stress relaxation patterns during loading and unloading is also similar, and those depend on the fiber orientation angles and the loading and unloading rates. The AS4/PEEK thermoplastic composite is used to characterize the relaxation behavior for different off-axis angles and loading rates. There exists a transient loading region at the beginning of unloading. The effective stress and effective plastic strain concept is used to establish a master curve of stress recovery pattern for different off-axis angles and unloading rates.
The swelling index of clayey soil was examined by constant rate of strain(CRS) consolidation test. Four kinds of strain rate were applied during unloading. The strain rates are l/l, l/5, 1/10, l/l 5 of loading. The strain rates during loading are 0.05%/min and 0.03%/min. From the test results using standard consolidometer, the swelling indexes were much similar values in case of 1/5 or 1/10 of the strain rate during loading stage. In the relation between effective stress and excess pore water pressure ratio, it was found that the existence of cross point and the stress level can be separated into two zones according to the swelling index.

In this paper, tensile behavior and low cycle fatigue behavior of 316L stainless steel which is currently favored structural material for several high temperature components such as the liquid metal cooled fast breeder reactor (LMFBR) were investigated. Research was performed at 55$0^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$ and $650^{\circ}C$ since working temperature of 316L stainless steel in a real field is from 40$0^{\circ}C$ to $650^{\circ}C$. From tensile tests performed by strain controls with $1{\times}10^{-3}/s,\; l{\times}10^{ -4}/s \;and\; 1{\times}10/^{ -5}/ s $ strain rates at each temperature, negative strain rate response (that is, strain hardening decreases as strain rate increases) and negative temperature response were observed. Strain rate effect was relatively small compared with temperature effect. LCF tests with a constant total strain amplitude were performed by strain control with a high temperature extensometer at R.T, 55$0^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$, $650^{\circ}C$ and total strain amplitudes of 0.3%~0.8% were used and test strain rates were $1{times}10^{-2} /s,\; 1{times}10^{-3} /s\; and\; 1{times}10^{-4} /s$. A new energy based LCF life prediction model which can explain the effects of temperature, strain amplitude and strain rate on fatigue life was proposed and its excellency was verified by comparing with currently used models.
MA Al alloys are examined to determine the effects of alloying of Mg and Cu and rolling on tensile deformation behavior at 748 K over a wide strain rate range($10^{-4}-10^3/s$). A powder metallurgy aluminum alloy produced from mechanically alloyed pure Al powder exhibits only a small elongation-to-failure(${\varepsilon}_f$ < ~50%) in high temperature(748 K) tensile deformation at high strain rates(${\acute{\varepsilon}}=1-10^2/s$). ${\varepsilon}_f$ in MA Al-0.5~4.0Mg alloys increases slightly with Mg content(${\varepsilon}_f={\sim}140%$ at 4 mass%). Combined addition of Mg and Cu(MA Al-1.5%Mg-4.0%Cu) is very effective for the occurrence of superplasticity(${\varepsilon}_f$ > 500%). Warm-rolling(at 393-492 K) tends to raise ${\varepsilon}_f$. Lowering the rolling-temperature is effective for increasing the ductility. The effect is rather weak in MA pure Al and MA Al-Mg alloys, but much larger in the MA Al-1.5%Mg-4.0%Cu alloy. Additions of Mg and Cu and warm-rolling of the alloy cause a remarkable reduction in the logarithm of the peak flow stress at low strain rates (${\acute{\varepsilon}}$< ~1/s) and sharpening of microstructure and smoothening of grain boundaries. Additions of Mg and Cu make the strain rate sensitivity(the m value) larger at high strain rates, and the warm-rolling may make the grain boundary sliding easier with less cavitation. Grain boundary facets are observed on the fracture surface when ${\varepsilon}_f$ is large, indicating the operation of grain boundary sliding to a large extent during superplastic deformation.

The ignition characteristics of a $CH_4$/hot air counterflow diffusion flame were investigated numerically using a flame-controlling continuation method. For the chemical reactions, the GRI-v1.2 reaction mechanism was used in the simulation. The maximum flame temperature was presented in the space of the inverse global strain rate, and showed S-curve-type behavior. The flame temperatures and velocities of the upper and middle branches were compared for different global strain rates. In addition, the global strain rate was compared with the local strain rates defined at the flame surface and the boundaries of the fuel and oxidizer sides of the fuel/air mixing layer. These local strain rates correlated well with the global strain rate.

The objective of this research is to analyze and evaluate the dynamic flow curve of metals under impact loading at both high strain rate (.epsilon.=1/h dh/dt > 10$\^$3/m/s/m) and large strain (.epsilon.=In h/h$\_$0/ > 1.0). A test method for dynamic compression of metal disc is described. The velocity of the striker face and the force on the anvil are measured during the impact period. From these primitive data the axial stress, strain, and strain rate of the disc are obtained. The Strain rate is determined by the striker velocity divided by the specimen height. This gives a slightly increasing strain rate over most of the deformation period. Strain rates of 100 to 10,000 per second are achieved. Attainable final strains are 150%. A discussion of several problem areas is presented. The friction on the specimen surfaces, the determination of the frictional coefficient, the influence of the specimen geometry (h$\_$0//d$\_$0/ ratio) on the friction effect, the lock-up condition for a given configuration, the friction correction factor, and the evaluation of several lubricants are given. The flow function(stress verus strain) is dependent on the material condition(e.g., prior cold work), specimen geometry, strain rate, and temperature.

The plastics are widely utilized in the inside of vehicles. The dynamic tensile characteristics of auto-body plastics are important in a prediction of deformation mode of the plastic component which undergoes the high speed deformation during car crash. This paper is concerned with the dynamic tensile characteristics of the auto-body plastics at intermediate strain rates. Quasi-static tensile tests were carried out at the strain rate ranged from 0.001/sec to 0.01/sec using the static tensile machine(Instron 5583). Dynamic tensile tests were carried out at the strain rate ranged from 0.1/sec to 100/sec using the high speed material testing machine developed. Conventional extensometry method is no longer available for plastics, since the deformation of plastic is accompanied with localized deformation. In this paper, quasi-static and dynamic tensile tests were performed using ASTM IV standard specimens with grids and images from a high speed camera were analyzed for strain measurement. True stress-strain relations and the actual strain rates at each deformation step were obtained by processing load data and deformation images, assuming the plastics to deform uniformly in each grid.

It is well-known that the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced composites under hydrostatic pressure environment is different from that of atmospheric pressure environment. It is also known that the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced composites is affected by a strain rate. In this work, we investigated the effect of strain rate on the compressive elastic modulus, fracture stress, and fracture strain of carbon/epoxy composites under hydrostatic pressure environment. The material used in the compressive test was unidirectional carbon/epoxy composites and the hydrostatic pressures applied was 270㎫. Compressive tests were performed applying three strain rates of 0.05%/sec, 0.25%/sec, and 0.55%/sec. The results showed that the elastic modulus increased with increasing strain rate while the fracture stress was little affected by the strain rate. The results also showed that the fracture strain decreased with increasing strain rate.
The present study deals with the effects of micro-alloying elements such as Ni, V, and Ti on the recrystallization behavior of carbon steels at different strain rates. Eight steel specimens were fabricated by varying the chemical composition and reheating temperature; then, a high-temperature compressive deformation test was conducted in order to investigate the relationship of the microstructure and the recrystallization behavior. The specimens containing micro-alloying elements had smaller prior austenite grain sizes than those of the other specimens, presumably due to the pinning effect of the formation of carbonitrides and AlN precipitates at the austenite grain boundaries. The high-temperature compressive deformation test results indicate that dynamic recrystallization behavior was suppressed in the specimens with micro-alloying elements, particularly at increased strain rate, because of the pinning effect of precipitates, grain boundary dragging and lattice misfit effects of solute atoms, although the strength increased with increasing strain rate.
