A genetic algorithm (GA) has been employed to optimize the major design variables of the liquid rocket engine. Mass flow rate to the main thrust chamber, mass flow rate to the gas generator and chamber pressure have been selected as design variables. The target engine is the open gas generator cycle using the LO2/RP-1 propellant. The objective function of design optimization is to maximize the specific impulse with condition of energy balance between the pump and the turbine. The properties of the combustion chamber have been obtained from CEA2. Pump & turbine efficiencies and properties of the gas generator have been modeled mathematically from reference data. The result shows 3~4% errors for the specific impulse and 2~6% errors for the pump power of the gas generator cycle compared to references.

In this study, the characteristics of decreasing exhaust gas of diesel engine was examined in dual fuel method by using commertial LPG for automotive. LPG was supplied to engine intake port by fumigation method and flow rate was controlled by using the needle valve. LPG supply ratios were 0, 20, 30% of total fuel amount to be supplied to engine by mass base. We investigated the effect of LPG supply ratio on exhaust gas concentrations related to excess air ratio and engine load at 1600, 1800, 2000 rpm. Soot concentration decreased about 30% in proportion to the increase of the LPG supply ratio. NOx concentration decreased in proportion to the increase of the LPG than diesel only and the increase rate was higher at low engine load. BSFC(Brake specific fuel consumption) was lower in proportion to the increase of the LPG supply ratio at high engine load and to the decrease of LPG supply ratio at low engine load.
A computer simulation has been developed to predict and investigate the performance of the assumed hydrogen engine. The simulation has be come a powerful tool as it saves time and also economical when compared to experimental study. The effects of various parameters, such as equivalent ratio, spark advance, revolutions per minute were calculated and then the optimal parameters of assumed engine were determined. The effects of spark advance, revolutions per minute, cylinder pressure, rate of pressure rise, flame temperature, rate of heat release, and mass fraction burned were simulated. The objective of the research paper is to develop a internal combustion model with hydrogen as a fuel.

This study indicated the possibility of energy regeneration from waste coolant heat, by using thermoelectric generation integrated with heat pipe. The internal combustion engine rejects more than 60% wasteful energy to the atmosphere by heat. The thermoelectric generator has recently been studied, to convert the energy from engine waste heat into electricity. For coolant waste heat recovery, a thermoelectric generator was investigated, to find out the possibility of vehicular application. Performance characteristics were conducted with various test conditions of coolant temperature, coolant mass flow rate, air temperature, and air velocity, with the thermoelectric generator installed either horizontally or vertically. Experimental results show that the electric power and conversion efficiency increases according to the temperature difference between the hot and cold side of the thermoelectric generator, and the coolant flow rate of the hot side heat exchanger. Performance improvement can be expected by optimizing the heat pipe design.

In external chemical vapor deposition processes including VAD and OVD the distribution of flame-synthesized silica particles is determined by heat and mass transfer limitations to particle formation. Combustion gas flow velocities are such that the particle diffusion time scale is longer than that of gas flow convection in the zone of particle formation. The consequence of these effects is that the particles formed tend to remain along straight smooth flow stream lines. Silica particles are formed due to oxidation and hydrolysis. In the hydrolysis, the particles are formed in diffuse bands and particle formation thus requires the diffusion of SiCl$\_$4/ toward CH$\_$4//O$\_$2/ combustion zone to react with H$\_$2/O diffusing away from these same zones on the torch face. The conversion kinetics of hydrolysis is fast compared to diffusion and the rate of conversion is thus diffusion-limited. In the language of combustion, the hydrolysis occurs as a Burke-Schumann process. In selected conditions, reaction zone shape and temperature distributions predicted by the Burke-Schumann analysis are introduced and compared with experimental data available. The calculated centerline temperatures inside the reaction zone agree well with the data, but the calculated values outside the reaction zone are a little higher than the data since the analysis does not consider diffusion in the axial direction and mixing of the combustion products with ambient air. The temperatures along the radial direction agree with the data near the centerline, but gradually diverge from the data as the distance is away from the centerline. This is caused by the convection in the radial direction, which is not considered in the analysis. Spatial distribution of silica particles are affected by convection and diffusion, resulting in a Gaussian form in the radial direction.

Combustion stability rating tests of 75-tonf-class thrust chamber for technology demonstration were carried out at a low pressure. Two kinds of mixing heads were used in this study. One of them has injectors of 631 and the other has injectors of 721. Mixing head with injectors of 631 showed a self-oscillation instability at the chamber pressure of 30 bar. Mixing head with injectors of 721 showed that a high frequency combustion stability was maintained under the same pressure and the same mass flow rate. But mixing head with injectors of 721 generated a self-oscillation instability at the chamber pressure of 20 bar and it was found that stability boundary region was changed due to the configuration of a mixing head from these results.

Fuel-side cold-flow tests were performed on the technology demonstration model of a 75 ton-class liquid rocket engine combustion chamber for the first stage of the Korea space launch vehicle II. Pressure drop in the cooling channels of the combustion chamber was measured by changing fuel mass flow rate through a pressure regulating system. Pressure drop in each segment of the chamber could be obtained and a lot of pressure drop was caused by high flow velocity in the nozzle throat segment. The accuracy of a hydraulic analysis method for calculating a pressure loss in cooling channels could be verified by applying it to the cold-flow test conditions.

The overall results of hot firing tests of fuel-rich gas generator with impinging injector at design and off-design points are described. The gas generator consists of an injector head with impinging injector, a water cooled combustor wall, a turbulence ring to enhance mixing, an instrument ring measuring temperature and pressure and a nozzle. The combustion tests were successfully performed without damage of gas generator. Test results show that the outlet temperature is not dependent on residence time of hot gas within 4~6msec but dependent on chamber pressure. The relation between outlet temperature and combustion efficiency resulting from measured pressure, mass flow rate and area of nozzle throat is shown. The overall O/F ratio is the critical parameter to determine the outlet temperature and the linear correlation between two parameters is established.

A practical, 30-tonf-class fullscale thrust chamber has been combustion tested using real propellants for the first time in the domestic technology scene. The very first combustion test was conducted at a low mass flow rate condition for the preliminary assessment of any problems associated with its function and performance while reducing risks from a high chamber pressure never achieved before. A test for the design condition achieved through a low-pressure stage shows stable characteristics of all the static pressures and thrust. Dynamic pressures measured in the manifolds and the chamber did not reveal any distinct wave coupled to a specific frequency and their intensities reside in the allowable range. Moreover, it is encouraging to find no physical failures with a thrust chamber hardware.
