  • In recent large-scale semiconductor manufacturing cleanrooms, the energy consumption in outdoor air conditioning (OAC) systems to heat, humidify, cool and dehumidify outdoor air(OA) represents about 40~50 % of the total cleanroom power consumption required to maintain cleanroom environment. Therefore, the assessment of energy consumption in outdoor air conditioning systems is essential for reducing the outdoor air conditioning load for a cleanroom. In the present study, an experiment with an outdoor air flow rate of $1,000m^3/h$ was conducted to compare the energy consumption in steam humidification, simple air washer, exhaust air heat recovery type air washer and dry cooling coil(DCC) return water heat recovery type air washer OAC systems. Besides, a numerical analysis was carried out to evaluate the annual energy consumption of the aforementioned four OAC systems. It was shown that the simple air washer, exhaust air heat recovery type air washer and DCC return water heat recovery type air washer OAC systems using water spray humidification were more energy-efficient than the steam humidification OAC system. Furthermore the DCC return water heat recovery type air washer OAC system was the most energy-efficient.

  • Nowadays, the problems of energy and environmental pollution become serious day by day and the diesel engine, which has been proved to be superior to gasoline engine with respect to fuel consumption and ecological problems of exhaust gas, has been adopted widely for various purposes from the marine diesel engine and the dynamo engine to all kinds of engine on land. Therefore, extensive parametric studies on combustion of diesel engine should be done for its desing and improvement. To predict the behavior of diesel engien according to variable operating conditions by means of cycle simulation, the reasonable pattern of heat release rate has to be asumed. But it is necessary to know the actual variation of heat release rate in order to assume the reasonable pattern of heat release rate according to the actual operating conditions. In this paper, on a high speed small bore diesel engine with pre-combustion chamber, experimental investigations were carried out to determine the relationship between the heat release pattern and parameters such as engine load and speed. And also, the theoretical investigations about the performance variations of the above diesel engine according to the predicted pattern of heat release rate variation were performed. From the above observations, it may be said that the Fanboro indicator, which was used to get the cylinder pressure, can be used to estimate a reasonable pattern of heat release rate and it is confirmed that the pattern of heat release rate for the pre-combustion type engine is different from that of the direct injection type engine.

  • This study deals with the maximum thermal load analysis and optimal capacity determination method of tank culture system for applying seawater source heat pump to save energy and realize zero energy. The location of the fish farm was divided into four sea areas, and the heat load in summer and winter was analyzed, respectively. In addition, two representative methods, the flow-through aquaculture system and the recirculation aquaculture system were reviewed as water treatment methods for fish farms. In addition, the concept of the exchange rate was introduced to obtain the maximum heat load of the fish farms. Finally, power consumption for heat pumps was analyzed in the view point of sea areas, tank capacity, and exchange rate based on the calculated maximum thermal load.

  • It is important to control the amount of supply water flow rate at all kinds of HVAC systems in order to maintain IAQ and energy efficiency. The most of buildings installed geothermal heat pumps is using fixed water flow rate in spite of the excellent performance of geothermal heat pumps. Especially when the air-conditioning load is low, the flow rate control may be possible to save energy to operate. However, it is effective to apply the variable flow control system in order to reduce energy consumption. Therefore, the purpose of this study, change a water flow rate and improve the whole performance of the geothermal heat pump. Geothermal heat pump system is modeled after the selection of the applied building, by setting the flow rate control to be analyzed through a simulation of performance evaluation. Building energy saving according to the flow rate of the ground circulating water analyze quantitatively and to investigate the importance of the flow control.

  • The rate of heat release is probably the single most important measure of fire hazard. Several tech-niques were developed for the measurement of rate of heat release, but were not suitable for fire test-ing purpose. Recently the application of oxygen consumption principle made it possible to development of well-characterized heat release rate measurement apparatus, the furniture calorimeter for large-scale fire tests and the cone calorimeter for bench-scale fire tests. The cone calorimeter can be used to determine the ignitability as well as heat release rate and smoke development, mass loss rate, combustion gas production etc. from burning materials. Thus, test method using cone calorimeter, an internationally recognized and accepted for the evalua-tion of fire properties, is a very promising tool for combustion study on various kind of materials and products.

  • Due to global warming and depletion of fossil fuels, technologies reducing $CO_2$ emission and increasing fuel efficiency simultaneously are required. An exhaust gas heat recovery system is a technology to satisfy both issues. This study analyses three types of heat exchanger installed on an exhaust pipe. In case of plate type heat exchanger, back pressure rapidly increased and maximum cylinder pressure reduced in high speed and maximum load, and back pressure increased over twice and specific fuel consumption also increased up to 2% which were the highest increasing rate. In case of fin tube type, the amounts of exhaust emissions and specific fuel consumption rate were less than the other two types. The effect of shell and tube was in the middle. Making a decision by only the effect on engine performance, a fin tube type is the best for exhaust heat recovery systems.

  • The purpose of this study was to quantify the impact of the ventilation rate on heating and cooling energy consumption in a detached house. For it, a series of simulations for the application of the diverse ventilation rate (ACH) were computationally conducted for a prototypical detached residential building in the cold climate (Detroit, Michigan) and hot/humid climate (Miami, Florida) of USA. Analysis revealed that ventilation is a significant heat losing source in the cold climate; thus, the higher ventilation rate significantly increases the heating energy consumption and energy cost in the cold climate; while the impact on energy increase for heating and cooling energy consumption is similar in hot/humid climate with less significancy compared to cold climate. The research outcome of this study could be a fundamental data for determining the optimal ventilation rate in terms of indoor air quality, but also building energy performance well.

  • Bifurcation behavior of ignition and extinction of catalytic reaction is theoretically investigated in a stagnation-point flow. Considering that reaction takes place only on the catalytic surface, where conductive heat losses are allowed to occur, activation energy asymptotics with a overall one-step Arrhenius-type catalytic reaction is employed. For the cases with and without the limiting reactant consumption, the analysis provides explicit expressions, which indicate the possibility of multiple steady-state solution branches. The difference between the solutions with and without reactant consumption is in the existence of an upper solution branch, and the neglect of reactant consumption is inappropriate for determining extinction conditions. For larger values of reactant consumption, the solution response is all monotone, suggesting that multiple solutions are not possible. It is shown that bifurcation Damkohler numbers increase (decrease) with increasing of conductive heat loss (gain) on the catalytic surface, which means that smaller (larger) values of the strain rate allow the surface reaction to tolerate larger heat losses (gains). Lewis number of the limiting reactant can also significantly affect bifurcation behavior in a similar way to the effect of heat loss.

  • This study was conducted in order to develop wind-water heating system where frictional heat is creased between the rotor and working fluid when they are rotating in the cylindrical heat generator. The wind-water heating system is composed of rotor, stator, working fluid, motor, inverter and heat generation tank. Instead of wind turbine, we have used an electrical motor of 30㎾ to rotate the rotor in this system. Two working fluids and six levels of rotor rpm were tested to quantify heat amounts generated by the system. Generally, as motor rpm goes up heat amount increases that we have expected. At the same rpm, viscous fluid showed up better performance than the water, generating more heat by 10$\^{C}$ difference. The greatest heat amount of 31,500kJ/h was obtained when the system constantly drained out the hot water of at the flow rate of 500ℓ/h. Power consumption rate of the motor was measured by thee phase electric power meter where the largest power consumption rate was 14㎾ when motor rpm was 600 and gained heat was 31,500kJ/h, that indicated total thermal efficiency of the wind power water heating system was 62%.

  • Chemical behaviors of each surface material for interior facilities affect to fire initiation and growth in general fire situation. These chemical behaviors were characterized by thermal properties (Heat release rate, Pyrolysis rate, specific heat, etc) which could be derived from experimental test. Especially, Heat release rate which indicates aspect of fire size is one of the most important property to asses fire hazard and protection needs. The cone calorimeter test (ISO 5660) has recently assumed to a dominant role in bench scale fire testing to obtain the Heat release rate of materials. This value could be calculated by the 'Oxygen Consumption Method' under various producing irradiances to each surface of materials. In this study, Process of the cone calorimeter test was simulated by Pyrolysis model of FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator by NIST) base on the ISO 5660 international standard. Then, we could estimate the simulation method of FDS in case of single materials through the comparative study with test results.
