  • In a free-space coherent optical communication system, wavefront distortion is frequently beyond the correction range of the adaptive-optics system after the laser has propagated through the atmospheric turbulence. A method of residual wavefront correction is proposed, to improve the quality of coherent optical communication in free space. The relationship between the wavefront phase expanded by Zernike polynomials and the mixing efficiency is derived analytically. The influence of Zernike-polynomial distortion on the bit-error rate (BER) of a phase-modulation system is analyzed. From the theoretical analysis, the BER of the system changes periodically, due to the periodic extension of wavefront distortion. Experimental results show that the BER after correction is reduced from 10-1 to 10-4; however, when the closed-loop control algorithm with residual correction is used, the experimental results show that the BER is reduced from 10-1 to 10-7.

  • In this paper, a rate-distortion based image segmentation algorithm is presented using a recursive merging with region adjacency graph (RAG). In the method, the dissimilarity between a pair of adjacent regions is represented as a Lagrangian cost function considered in rate-distortion sense. Lagrangian multiplier is estimated in each merging step, a pair of adjacent regions whose cost is minimal is searched and then the pair of regions are merged into a new region. The merging step is recursively performed until some termination criterion is reached. The proposed method thus is suitable for region-based coding or segmented-based coding. Experiment results for 256x256 Lena show that segmented-based coding using the proposed method yields PSNR improvement of about 2.5 - 3.5 dB. 0.8 -1.0 dB. 0.3 -0.6 dB over mean-difference-based method. distortion-based method, and JPEG, respectively.

  • OFDM(orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) is very effective forhigh data rate transmission system. However, communication performance becomes worse because of nonlinear distortion resulting from the PAPR. In this paper, we like to propose a tone-controlled CI/OFDM system including the TMD (inter-modulation distortion) reduction method in order to improve the BER performance. In this tone-controlled CI/OFDM system, control tone is additionally inserted in each data symbol of CI/OFDM system to make the CI/OFDM lower the PAPR and robust to nonlinear distortion. So, tone-controlled CI/OFDM using the IMD reduction method shows better BER (bit error rate) performance than methods based on PAPR reduction.

  • This paper proposes an efficient method for encoding the shape information of the object in the image. The polygonal approximation method is categorized into a loss coding method and is widely used for approximating object's shape information. The proposed method selects less number of vertices than IRM (iterated refinement method) or PVS (progressive vertex selection) when the maximum distortion is given, so reduces the bit-rates. The proposed method selects the vertices of a polygon with a simple and efficient method considering the rate-distortion sense. We construct the shape information coder, which shows the outstanding performance in the rate-distortion sense, based on the conventional progressive vertex selection method and the new vertex selection condition that we propose in this paper. Simulation results show that the proposed method has better performance than other conventional vertex selection methods in the tate-distortion sense.

  • In this paper, we propose a rate control scheme, using histogram based rate-distortion (R-D) estimation, which produces a consistent picture quality between consecutive frames. The histogram based R-D estimation used in our rate control scheme offers a closed-form mathematical model that enable us to predict the bits and the distortion generated from an encoded frame at a given quantization parameter (QP) and vice versa. The most attractive feature of the R-D estimation is low complexity of computing the R-D data because its major operation is just to obtain a histogram or weighted histogram of DCT coefficients from an input picture. Furthermore, it is accurate enough to be applied to the practical video coding. Therefore, the proposed rate control scheme using this R-D estimation model is appropriate for the applications requiring low delay and low complexity, and controls the output bit-rate ad quality accurately. Our rate control scheme ensures that the video buffer do not underflow and overflow by satisfying the buffer constraint and, additionally, prevents quality difference between consecutive frames from exceeding certain level by adopting the distortion constraint. In addition, a consistent considering the maximum tolerance BER of the voice service. Also in Rician fading channel of K=6 and K=10, considering CLP=$10^{-3}$ as a criterion, it is observed that the performance improment of about 3.5 dB and 1.5 dB is obtained, respectively, in terms of $E_b$/$N_o$ by employing the concatenated FEC code with pilot symbols.

  • Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is an attractive technique for achieving high-bit-rate wireless data transmission. However, multicarrier systems such as OFDM show great sensitivity to nonlinear distortion. The OFDM structure requires a summation of a large number of subcarriers for multicarrier modulation, and as a result of this summation large signal envelope fluctuations occur. These fluctuations make OFDM systems to be very sensitive to nonlinear distortion introduced by the high power amplifier (HPA) at the transmitter. In this paper, we propose a canonical piecewise-linear (CPWL) model based digital predistorter to compensate for nonlinear distortion introduced by the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) and the HPA in OFDM systems. The performance of the new predistortion scheme for OFDM systems is evaluated in terms of total degradation (TD) and bit error rate (BER). The simulation results demonstrated that the proposed predistorter achieves significant performance improvement by effectively compensating for the nonlinear distortion introduced by the HPA.

  • In this paper, we have proposed a VQ algorithm which uses a generating order to make quantize feature vector of speech signal. The proposed algorithm inspects what codeword follows a(ter present codeword and adds new index to established codebook, when mapping speech signal. We present a variable bit rate for new codebook, and propose an efficient compressed way of information. In this way, the number of computation and the number of codewords to be searched are reduced considerably. The performance of the proposed VQ algorithm is evaluated by spectrum distortion measure and bit rate. The obtained spectrum distortion is reduced about 0.22 [db], and the bit rate is saved over 0.21 bit/frame.

  • This paper presents rate-distortion optimization that is considered sequence statistics(complexity) to choose the best macroblock mode decision in H.264. In previous work, Lagrange multiplier is derived by the function of constant value 0.85 and QP so that is not the proper Lagrange multilplier for any image sequence. The proposed algorithm solves the problem by changing constant value 0.85 into adaptive value which is influenced by image complexity, and by reducing the encoder complexity to estimate the image statistics with the multiplication of transformed, quantized rate and distortion. Proposed algorithm is achieved the bit-rate saving up to 5% better than previous method.

  • Since the H.264 encoding adopts both forward prediction and hi-direction prediction modes and exploits Variable Length Coding(VLC), the amount of data generated from video encoder varies as Flaying time goes by. The fixed bit rate encoding system which has limited transmission channel capacity uses a buffer to control output bitstream It's necessary to control the bitstream to maintain within manageable range so as to protect buffer from overflow or underflow. With existing bit amount control algorithms, the $\lambda_{MODE}$ which is relationship between distortion value and quantization parameter often excesses normal value to end up with video error. This paper proposes an algorithm to protect buffer from overflow or underflow by introducing a new quantization parameter against distortion value of H.264 video data. The test results of 6 exemplary data show that the proposed algorithm has the same PSNR as and up to 8% reduced bit rate against existing algorithms.

  • This paper describes a new bit allocation algorithm that can achieve a constant bit rate when coding multiple video objects, while improving rate-distortion (R-D) performance over the VM5 method for MPEG-4 object-based video coding. In particular, we propose two models to estimate the rate-distortion characteristics of coded objects as well as skipped objects. Based on the proposed models, we present several R-D coding modes with spatio-temporal trade-offs to improve coding efficiency. The proposed algorithm is performed at the object level for object-based video coding. Simulation results demonstrate moderate improvement at low as well as high bit rates. The proposed algorithm can produce the actual coded bits very close to the target bits over a wide range of bit rates. Consequently, the proposed algerian has not experienced any buffer overflow or underflow over the bit rates between 32 kbps and 256 kbps.
