  • To evaluate the feasibility of electrodialysis for nitrate-nitrogen removal from wastewater, the effect of operating parameters on the removal of nitrate-nitrogen was experimentally estimated. The limiting current density (LCD) linearly increased with the nitrate concentration and the flow rate. The time when the nitrate concentration of diluate reached at 20 mg/L was linearly proportional to concentration of diluate, and the concentration of concentrate did not affect the removal rate. Increase in the flow rate gave a positive effect on the removal rate and became insignificant at How rates greater than 1.6 L/min. The removal rate increased with the applied voltage, but the increment in the removal rate decreased as the applied voltage approached the LCD. From the operation of the electrodialysis module used in this research, the flow rate of 1.6 L/min and the voltage corresponding to the 80~90% of LCD were found be the optimum operating condition for the nitrate removal from highly concentrated nitrate-nitrogen solutions.

  • An electrolysis system with a vertically circulating mercury capillary bundle electrode was developed with a very large electrode area in a minimum space. This system was operated by forcedly feeding mercury and aqueous solution containing metal ion into a fiber bundle packed densely within a small porous glass tube. In order to test the characteristics and stability of the electrolysis system, the reduction voltammograms of uranyl and ferric ions were measured with changes of the mercury flow rate and the aqueous flow rate. The aqueous flow rate had a large effect on the electrochemical reaction of metal ion occurring at the interface between the mercury and the aqueous solution and had to be regulated as an appropriate value to have a good limiting current shape. The limiting current was linearly proportional to the aqueous flow rate, and complete reductions of uranyl and ferric ions were rapidly and continuously accomplished at the potential showing limiting current. With a mercury flow rate high enough to keep a capillary continuum of mercury in the fiber bundle, the mercury flow rate had almost no effect on the electrochemical reaction. This system was confirmed to be effective and stable enough to control rapidly and continuously the oxidation state of metal ions fed into the system under an appropriate aqueous flow rate.

  • Upon introducing satellite communication system to korea, one of the important problems to copy with is the effect from the probable intentional interference i. e. jamming. In this paper, we have considered the M any PSK signal and the soft limiter type, which contains hard limiter, nonhnear satellite transponder in environments of uplink tone or noise jamming plus Gaussian noise and downlink Gaussian noise. Using the derived error rate equation, we have evaluated numerically the error performance of BPSK and QPSK system, and shown in figures in terms of upink and downink earner to jamming rater(CJR) and limiting level. From the results we have known that tone jamming effect on the error performance in BPSK and QPSK signals in nonlinear satelhie shnnel become less with increasing the uplink CNR and with decreasing the liniting level. And in a tone jamming, the limiting level affects hardly on the error performance of both BPSK and QPSK signals. When limiting leveri is zero, BPSK and QPSK signals show the best error rate performance.

  • The error rate equation fo DS-BPSK(Direct Sequence Binary Phase Shift Keying) signal transmitted through the nonlinear satellite transponder has been derived in the cochannel interference and downlink Gaussian noise environment. The input to the satellite transponder is the superposition of DS-BPSK signal with one interfere which is a cochannel wide-band PN signal. The error rate performance of DS-BPSK system has been evaluated and shown in figures in terms of carrier to interference power ratio(CIR), downlink signal to noise power ratio(downlink SNR) and process gain. In the analysis, it has been shown that the use of a hard limiter in DS-BPSK satellite system leads to the generation of narrow-band intermodulation products which is independent of the process gain. Also it is known that the error rate performance can be improved in the low levels (below 10dB) of CIR as the CIR increase. As the process gain varies from 10 to 100 the curve gives the about 10 dB gain in downlink SNR to maintain a fixed error rate.

  • Knowledge regarding lipid catabolism has been of great interest in the field of animal sciences. In the livestock industry, excess fat accretion in meat is costly to the producer and undesirable to the consumer. However, intramuscular fat (marbling) is desirable to enhance carcass and product quality. The manipulation of lipid content to meet the goals of animal production requires an understanding of the detailed mechanisms of lipid catabolism to help meticulously design nutritional, pharmacological, and physiological approaches to regulate fat accretion. The concept of a basic system of lipases and their co-regulators has been identified. The major lipases cleave triacylglycerol (TAG) stored in lipid droplets in a sequential manner. In adipose tissue, adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL) performs the first and rate-limiting step of TAG breakdown through hydrolysis at the sn-1 position of TAG to release a non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) and diacylglycerol (DAG). Subsequently, cleavage of DAG occurs via the rate-limiting enzyme hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) for DAG catabolism, which is followed by monoglyceride lipase (MGL) for monoacylglycerol (MAG) hydrolysis. Recent identification of the co-activator (Comparative Gene Identification-58) and inhibitor [G(0)/G(1) Switch Gene 2] of ATGL have helped elucidate this important initial step of TAG breakdown, while also generating more questions. Additionally, the roles of these lipolysis-related enzymes in muscle, liver and skin tissue have also been found to be of great importance for the investigation of systemic lipolytic regulation.

  • The substituent effects on the pyridinolysis (XC5H4N) of Y-aryl ethyl chlorophosphates are investigated in acetonitrile at $35.0^{\circ}C$. The two strong ${\pi}$-acceptor substituents, X = 4-Ac and 4-CN in the X-pyridines, exhibit large positive deviations from the Hammett plots but little positive deviations from the Br$\ddot{o}$nsted plots. The substituent Y effects on the rates are really significant and the Hammett plots for substituent Y variations in the substrates invariably change from biphasic concave downwards via isokinetic at X = H to biphasic concave upwards with a break point at Y = 3-Me as the pyridine becomes less basic. These are interpreted to indicate a mechanistic change at the break point from a stepwise mechanism with a rate-limiting bond formation (${\rho}_{XY}$ = -6.26) for Y = (4-MeO, 4-Me, 3-Me) to with a rate-limiting leaving group expulsion from the intermediate (${\rho}_{XY}$ = +5.47) for Y = (4-Me, H, 3-MeO). The exceptionally large magnitudes of ${\rho}_{XY}$ values imply frontside nucleophilic attack transition state.

  • The present study explored the short-term effects of dietary conjugated-linoleic acid (CLA) on liver lipid metabolism in starved/refed Otsuka Long Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats. Male OLETF rats (12 weeks old) were starved for 24 hours, then refed for 48 hours with either a CLA diet [7.5% CLA and 7.5% Safflower oil (SAF)] or a SAF control diet (15% SAF). The results demonstrated a 30% reduction of hepatic triglyceride (TG) concentration in the CLA group when compared to the control group. Liver cholesterol concentration was also 26% lower in the CLA fed rats. The activity of mitochondrial carnitine palmitoyltransferase, the rate-limiting enzyme of fatty acid oxidation, was moderately elevated by 1.2-fold in the livers of the CLA group when compared to the control. In contrast, phosphatidate phosphohydrolase, the rate-limiting enzyme for TG synthesis, was found to be 20% lower in the livers of the CLA-fed rats. Therefore, dietary CLA evidently lowers liver lipid concentrations through a reduced TG synthesis and enhanced fatty acid oxidation in starved/refed OLETF rats.

  • The nucleophilic substitution reactions of bis(Y-aryl) chlorophosphates (1) with substituted anilines and deuterated anilines are investigated kinetically in acetonitrile at 35.0 $^{\circ}C$. The kinetic results of 1 are compared with those of Y-aryl phenyl chlorophosphates (2). The substrate 1 has one more identical substituent Y compared to substrate 2. The cross-interaction between Y and Y, due to additional substituent Y, is significant enough to result in the change of the sign of cross-interaction constant (CIC) from negative ${\rho}_{XY}$ = -1.31 (2) to positive ${\rho}_{XY}$ = +1.91 (1), indicating the change of reaction mechanism from a concerted $S_N2$ (2) to a stepwise mechanism with a rate-limiting leaving group departure from the intermediate (1). The deuterium kinetic isotope effects (DKIEs) involving deuterated anilines ($XC_6H_4ND_2$) show secondary inverse, $k_H/k_D$ = 0.61-0.87. The DKIEs invariably increase as substituent X changes from electron-donating to electron-withdrawing, while invariably decrease as substituent Y changes from electron-donating to electron-withdrawing. A stepwise mechanism with a rate-limiting bond breaking involving a predominant backside attack is proposed on the basis of positive sign of ${\rho}_{XY}$ and secondary inverse DKIEs.
