Fast Intra-Prediction Mode Decision Algorithm for H.264/AVC using Non-parametric Thresholds and Simplified Directional Masks

  • In the H.264/ AVC video coding standard, the intra-prediction coding with various block sizes offers a considerably high improvement in coding efficiency compared to previous standards. In order to achieve this, H.264/AVC uses the Rate-distortion optimization (RDO) technique to select the best intraprediction mode for a macroblock, and it brings about the drastic increase of the computation complexity of H.264 encoder. To reduce the computation complexity and stabilize the coding performance on visual quality, this paper proposed a fast intra-prediction mode decision algorithm using non-parametric thresholds and simplified directional masks. The use of nonparametric thresholds makes the intra-coding performance not be dependent on types of video sequences and simplified directional masks reduces the compuation loads needed by the calculation of local edge information. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm is able to reduce more than 55% of the whole encoding time with a negligible loss in PSNR and bitrates and provides the stable performance regardless types of video sequences.

  • In this paper, the efficient motion estimation and compensation method for 3 dimensional wavelet transform is proposed. Recently, since the compression performance and scalable functionality are provided by wavelet transform, many researches have been carried out for applying to the video compression. For the temporal filtering, motion estimation and compensation techniques are used, but the unconnected pixels, which are produced by motion compensation result into the degradation of coding performance and quality of the picture. For the efficient motion compensated temporal filtering by reducing the number of these unconnected pixels, we propose the variable block size motion estimation and compensation method. Also we propose a method that determines the block size using rate-distortion optimization technique according to the local characteristics of the frame. The simulation results show the improved performances than the MPEG-4 scalable coding methods and the 3 dimensional wavelet coding methods using fixed block size motion estimation and compensation.

  • This paper proposes a fast enhancement layer coding method to reduce computational complexity for Scalable HEVC (SHVC) which is based on High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). The proposed method decreases encoding time by simplifying Rate Distortion Optimization (RDO)for enhancement layers (EL). The simplification is achieved by restricting CU depths based on the correlation of coding unit (CU) depths between adjacent layers and scalability (spatial or quality) of EL. Comparing with the performance of SHM 1.0 software encoder, the proposed method reduces the encoding time by up to 31.5%.

  • The H.264/AVC standard developed by the joint Video Team (JVT) provides better coding efficiency than previous standards. The new emerging H.264/AVC employs variable block size motion estimation using multiple reference frame with 1/4-pel MV(Motion Vector) accuracy. These techniques are a important feature to accomplish higher coding efficiency. However, these techniques are increased overall computational complexity. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes advanced fast mode decision suited for variable block size by classifying inter mode based on Rate Distortion Optimization(RDO) technique. Proposed algorithm is going to use to implement H/W structure for fast mode decision. The experimental results shows that the proposed algorithm provides significant reduction computational complexity without any noticeable coding loss and additional computation. Entire computational complexity is decreased about 30%.

  • 고효율 비디오 부호화/복호화 표준인 HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding)는 ITU-T(VCEG)와 ISO-IEC(MPEG)이 JCT-VC라는 팀을 이루어 공동으로 표준화를 진행 하였다. 이 표준화에서는 기존 표준기술 보다 다양한 예측 방향을 통한 인트라 예측 방법을 사용하며, 이로 인해 부호기의 계산량이 매우 높은 단점을 가진다. 제안하는 방법은 예측단위인 PU의 서브샘플링 값을 구하고 이의 경사도를 이용해 율-왜곡 최적화 방법(Rate-Distortion Optimization)의 계산에 사용되는 후보 모드를 줄이는 방법으로 부호기의 속도를 개선하는 방법이다. 이 방법은 기존 방법보다 적은 비트 손실에도 불구하고 약 19%의 부호화 속도 향상을 가진다.

  • In this paper, we proposed a fast algorithm for inter prediction included the most complexity in H.264/AVC. It decide search range according to direction of predicted motion vector, and then perform adaptive candidate spiral search. Simultaneously, it perform motion estimation of variable loop with threshold for variable block size. Conclusively, it is implemented in JM FME with high complexity applying to rate-distortion optimization. Experimental results show that significant complexity reduction is achieved while the degradation in video quality is negligible.

  • In this letter, we present an enhanced block-based adaptive loop filter (E-BALF) with multiple filter symmetric structures. The E-BALF adapts various filter symmetric structures in a rate-distortion optimization sense, reflecting the statistical properties of each image in a video sequence. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves a reduction in the Bj${\phi}$ntegaard delta (BD)-bitrate by an average of 9.60% compared with Joint Model 11.0 of H.264/AVC. Compared to the state-of-the-art BALF, a reduction of up to 1.13% in BD-bitrate is achieved.

  • 기존 RDO(Rate Distortion Optimization) 기반 압축 방식은 압축 성능에 초점을 두기 때문에 영상 내 인지 특성이 무시될 수 있다. 따라서 RoI(Region of Interest)을 기반으로 압축률을 조절하는 연구가 고안[1, 2, 3, 4] 되었으며, HVS(Human Visual System) 관점에서 영상 내 중요한 부분에 대해 더 높은 품질로 영상을 압축하는 연구가 대부분이다. 최근 인공지능 기술이 발전함에 따라 지능형 영상 분석에 대한 수요가 증가하고 있으며, 이에 따라 머신 비전을 위한 영상 부호화 및 효율적인 전송에 대한 필요성이 대두되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 VVC(Versatile Video Coding)의 dQP(delta Quantization Parameter)를 활용하여 RoI(Region of Interest) 기반압축 방법을 제안하고, 두가지의 RoI 추출 방식을 소개한다. Detectron2 Faster R-CNN X101-FPN [5]의 첫번째 탐지기를 통해 후보 영역 기반 RoI 을 추출하고, 두번째 탐지기를 통해 객체 기반 RoI 을 추출하여, 영상 내 객체 부분과 비객체 부분으로 나누어 서로 다른 압축률로 압축을 수행하였으며, 이에 따른 성능을 비교하고자 한다.

Fast Mode Decision for MPEG-2 to H.264 Transcoding (MPEG-2에서 H.264로 변환하기 위한 고속 모드 결정 기법)

  • In this paper, we present a efficient transcoding method from MPEG-2 to H.264. The proposed transcoder is the transcoding method for spatial domain which consists of MPEG-2 decoder part and H.264 encoding part. In transcoder, we can get useful information to estimate less probable modes from MPEG-2 decoder. Using this information, H.264 encoder chooses the macroblock mode of I-frame and P-frame adaptively to reduce the whole complexity of the transcoder. Our experimental result shows that the proposed algorithm can archive about $30\sim60%$ computational saving without significant degradation of visual quality and increasing of bit rate.

An Efficient coding Method for Motion Prediction Flag in the Scalable Video Encoding Standard (스케일러블 동영상 부호화 표준에서 움직임 예측 플래그를 위한 효율적인 부호화 방식)

  • In the scalable video coding standard, inter-layer prediction based on the coding information of the base layer was adopted to increase the coding performance. This prediction tool results in new syntax elements called motion_prediction_flag (mPF) and residul_prediction_flag(rPF), which are carried to notify the motion vector predictor (MVP) and reference block required in the motion compensation of the decoder. In this paper, an efficient coding method for mPF is proposed to enhance coding efficiency of the salable video coding standard. Through an analysis on the transmission of mPF based on the relationship between the MVPs, we discover the conditions where mPF is unnecessary at the decoder and suggest a modified rate-distortion (RD) cost function to make RD optimization more effective. Simulation results show that the proposed method offers BD rate savings of approximately 1.4%, compared with the conventional SVC standard.
