Application of Rapid Prototyping Technique and Intraoperative Navigation System for the Repair and Reconstruction of Orbital Wall Fractures

  • Background: Restoring the orbital cavity in large blow out fractures is a challenge for surgeons due to the anatomical complexity. This study evaluated the clinical outcomes and orbital volume after orbital wall fracture repair using a rapid prototyping (RP) technique and intraoperative navigation system. Methods: This prospective study was conducted on the medical records and radiology records of 12 patients who had undergone a unilateral blow out fracture reconstruction using a RP technique and an intraoperative navigation system from November 2014 to March 2015. The surgical results were assessed by an ophthalmic examination and a comparison of the preoperative and postoperative orbital volume ratio (OVR) values. Results: All patients had a successful treatment outcome without complications. Volumetric analysis revealed a significant decrease in the mean OVR from $1.0952{\pm}0.0662$ (ranging from 0.9917 to 1.2509) preoperatively to $0.9942{\pm}0.0427$ (ranging from 0.9394 to 1.0680) postoperatively. Conclusion: The application of a RP technique for the repair of orbital wall fractures is a useful tool that may help improve the clinical outcomes by understanding the individual anatomy, determining the operability, and restoring the orbital cavity volume through optimal implant positioning along with an intraoperative navigation system.

SLS의 공정 파라미터 최적화에 관한 연구 (Optimization of Build Parameters in SLS Process)

  • RP(Rapid Prototyping) technology is gaining its popularity in building a prototype in all industries. SLS(Slective Laser Sintering) is one of RP technologies, which is focused on tooling processes as well as three dimension solid model. There are several factors, the length and the cross-sectional area of a part, that have an effect on build setup in SLS process. In this paper, the computation on geometrical relationship is used to slice STL file and to estimate these factors. Based on these values, the build setup parameters such as the heating temperature, the laser power, and the powder cartridge feed rate are determined by neural network approaches. The test results show that the computation time is saved and the neural network approach is able to apply to get the optimal parameters of build process within an acceptable error rate.

  • RP&M (Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing) is the most appropriate technology for the small-lot production system, because the production cycle is getting shorter owing to various needs of the consumer. In this paper, rapid tooling technology is applied to the casting process. The casting process has the ability to reflect complicated shapes in one process. But it has not been widely used to make a die and mold because of the poor surface quality caused by air bubbles on the surface of the casting product. In this study, the porous casting mold is fabricated from a mixture of plaster and water-soluble binder. The porous casting mold can improve the characteristics of casting products with the help of the vacuum sealed casting process. The vacuum sealed casting process is an advanced technology that removes the air bubbles between the porous casting mould and the liquid metal, thus making the surface of the casting product finer. The purpose of this paper is to develop a high quality shoe mold using porous casting mold and to apply the RP&M technology to the shoe industry.

  • Most companies use technologies such as stereolithography, selective laser sintering, and fused deposition modeling to make parts for such small consumer products as telephones, heads, and shoes. The largest part that the existing RP systems can make is only 600 mm in length. Because most RP systems build parts by depositing, solidifying, or sintering material point-by-point, making larger objects takes a long time. and in many cases, large objects won't fit the build size. A new effective thick-layered RP process. Transfer type Variable Lamination Manufacturing using expandable polystyrene foam (VLM-ST) has been developed with thick layers and sloped surfaces. In this paper, a scaledown model of F16 Fighter with the length of 800 mm is rapidly fabricated using the VLM-ST process. In order to build a CAD model of F16 larger than 600 mm in length, the approach in VLM-ST is to build larger parts in multiple sub-parts and then glue them together. The fabricated result shows that the VLM-ST process employing thick layers and sloped surfaces is adequate for creating the real-sized large objects in the diverse fields such as automobiles, electric home appliances, electronics. and etc.

쾌속조형기법을 이용한 생분해성 스텐트용 메쉬필름의 약물방출거동 효과 (Effect of Drug Eluting Uniformity for Biodegradable Stent by Solid Freeform Fabrication)

  • 약물방출 고분자 코팅 스텐트는 수술후 재협착을 획기적으로 줄였지만, 약물방출이 균일한 구조체를 제작하는 것이 어렵고 체내에 구조체를 영구적으로 남겨야 하는 부담을 여전히 가지고 있다. 이를 해결하는 방안으로 생분해성 고분자로 스텐트를 제작하는 방법들이 활발하게 연구되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 조형가공기술(solid freeform fabrication, SFF)의 하나인 쾌속조형기법(rapid prototyping technique)의 3차원 플로팅(3D plotting) 기술을 이용하여 파크리탁셀(PTX) 약물을 함유한 폴리카프로락톤(PCL) 3차원 구조체를 제작하였고, 생분해성 PCL 고분자로부터 PTX의 방출거동과 스텐트 제작 가능성을 고찰하였다. 약물을 포함한 구조체의 표면특성을 SEM으로 확인한 결과 굴곡이 자연스럽고 매끄러운 표면을 가지고 있었다. FTIR을 통해서 약물이 성공적으로 구조체에 포함되었음을 확인하였고, NMR과 HPLC를 통해서 PCL 구조체 중의 PCL함량과 PTX의 서서히 방출됨을 확인되었다. 또한 세포실험을 통해 구조체에서 방출된 약물이 생물학적으로 활성을 유지하고 있으며, 반복제작된 구조체에서도 균일한 활성의 약물이 방출됨을 확인하였다. 이와같은 쾌속조형기법을 이용하여 약물을 포함하는 구조체를 제작하고 분석함으로써, 생분해성 고분자 스텐트로서의 적용가능성을 제시하였다.

  • RP techniques have their unique characteristics according to the working principles : star-stepped surface of parts due to layer-by-layer stacking low build speed caused by line-by-line solidification to fish one layer and post processing to improve surface finish etc The objective of this study is to propose a new RP technique Variable Deposition Mnanufacturing (VDM) which can make up for the disadvantages of the existing RP techniques and to develop an apparatus to implement the technique. The proposed process can greatly reduce the build time and improve the surface finish of parts generated. Experiments are carried out to obtain the range of temperature of molten material to maintain its fluidity and to investigate the effect of gas cooling on the preservation of the slopes. Some simple shapes such as a line-shape an S-shape and a circle-shape are fabricated from Ethylene Vinyl Acetatecopolymer(EVA) In order to examine the applicability of VDM to more general shapes a tensile specimen and a yo-yo shape were manufactured by the proposed RP method using EVA material as a trial approach. The current basic study shows a high potential of practical use of the proposed VDM process to prototyping of a general three-dimensional shape.

  • 산업 제품을 디자인하는 디자이너들은 CAD(Computer Aided Design)과 같은 방법을 사용하여 새로운 디자인을 만들어내고, 이를 적용한 가상의 3D 모델을 통해 살펴본다. 이 방법은 직접 손으로 도면을 그리고 단순히 한쪽 면만 살펴볼 수 있었던 기존의 방법에 비해서 컴퓨터로 인한 자동화와 다양한 각도에서 제품에 적용된 새로운 디자인을 살펴봄으로써 시간과 비용을 절감할 수 있다. 이에 우리는 앞서 언급한 디자인 방법에 Augmented Reality와 Rapid Prototyping의 개념을 더해 현실적이고 인터랙티브한 산업제품의 디자인 방법을 고안하였다. 이것은 스티로폼과 같은 재질로 만들어진 mockup을 조립하여 만들고, 3D 모델의 컬러, 재질, 버튼 등의 인터페이스 요소와 실제 제품을 조작하는 것과 같은 인터랙티브한 요소들을 적용시킴으로써 제품을 디자인할 수 있는 증강현실기반 시스템이다.

FDM 쾌속 조형기를 통해 만들어진 ABS 파트를 이용한 직접 정밀 주조에 대한 연구 (A Study of Using FDM/ABS Parts as Wax-Pattern Substitutes in the Investment Casting Process)

  • The lead time for new products is very limited in the current manufacturing processes, therefore the Rapid Prototyping process has been introduced and generally used in the industry. Fused Deposition Manufacturing (FDM) is one of the most common methods in this field. In the FDM process, the patterns are made of Wax of ABS and ABS shows better quality of the patterns. To date, the FDM/ABS patterns are used in investment casting for making silicon moulds to produce was patterns because it is very difficult to dewax FDM/ABS directly. The aim of this paper was to propose a feasibility of using FDM/ABS parts as wax-pattern substitutes in the investment casting process. The effects of casting conditions, such as pre-heat temperature and casting temperature, are provided. Comparisons with the conventional investment casting processes using the wax-patterns under the same prototype are made. Lead-time and saving cost are discussed in using FDM/ABS parts as was-pattern substitutes compared with the products from other rapid prototype systems.

쾌속조형기를 이용한 정밀주조물의 쾌속제작에 관한 연구 (Study on the Rapid Manufacturing for Investment Casting)

  • 정밀하고 복잡한 형상의 금속 부품을 제작하는데 사용되는 정밀주조법은 왁스형을 만드는 과정을 수작업으로 진행하므로 많은 시간과 비용이 소요되었다. 왁스형 제작공정을 개선하기 위해 쾌속조형기를 이용하는 방법을 제안하였다. SLS 형 쾌속조형기를 이용하여 캐스트폼형을 제작하고 여기에 용융된 왁스를 함침시켜 왁스형을 완성한다. 이 방법을 이용하여 스텐레스 스틸 소재의 금속 주분을 제작하였는데, 시간과 비용이 크게 절감되었으며 정밀도도 향상되었다.

  • 본 연구에서는 다종재료를 가공할 수 있는 RP(Rapid Prototyping)인 CAFL$^{VM}$의 구현을 위해 반드시 필요한 단면정보 추출기에 대하여 연구하였다. STL 3D 모형에서 단면정보를 추출하기 위해서, 패싯(facet)과 슬라이싱(slicing) 평면이 가질 수 있는 모든 경우를 고려한 알고리즘을 개발하였다. STL 파일의 구조적인 문제점 때문에 모호성과 처리량 증가 문제가 발생하지만, 본 연구에서는 창조 버퍼를 사용하여 이러한 문제점들을 효과적으로 해결하였으며, 이를 많은 STL 3D 샘플로 검증하였다.
