While developing physical prototype from CAD model, rapid prototyping mainly focuses on two key points reducing time and material consumption. So, we have to change from a traditional solid model to building a hollowed prototype. In this paper, a new method is presented to hollow out solid objects with uniform wall thickness to increase RP efficiency. To achieve uniform wall thickness, it is necessary to generate internal contour by slicing the offset model of an STL model. Due to many difficulties in this method, this paper proposes a new algorithm that computes internal contours computing offset model which is generated from external contour using wall thickness. Proposed method can easily compute the internal contour by slicing the offset surface defined by the sum of circle swept volumes of external contours without actual offset and the circle wept volumes. Internal contour existences are confirmed by using the external point. Presented algorithm uses the 2D geometric algorithm allowing RP implementation more efficient. Various examples have been tested with implementation of the algorithm, and some examples are presented for illustration.

Rapid prototyping(RP) has been used for design verification and proto sample or mold manufacturing. Many RP systems have been introduced into the market during the past 15 years. However, until now, the systems have used mainly for external physical models (mono function), and have the basic but critical limitation of one material on one stage (mono material). To overcome the limitations of mono-material and mono-function of conventional. RP systems, the concept of Functional Phototype Development (FPD) is newly proposed in this paper FPD provides the necessary prototype functions such as mechanical, optical, chemical and electrical properties in order to meet the broad requirements of the industry. The paper illustrates the representative achievements of electronic components such as the multi-layer printed circuit board(MLB). Experimental results demonstrate that FPD has great potential applied to broad industrial uses and that It Will be a powerful tool in the neat future.

RP(Rapid Prototyping) has been used in the various industrial applications. This paper presents the optimization techniques fur fabricated 3D model design using RP machine for the medical field. Once the original brain model data are obtained from 2D slices of MRI/CT machine, the data can be modeled as an optimal ellipse. The objective of this study includes optimization of fabrication time and surface roughness using the adaptive slicing method. It can reduce fabrication time without losing surface roughness quality by accumulating the slices with variable thickness. According to the parameter tuning and synthesis of its effect, more suitable parameter values can be obtained by enhanced 3D brain model fabrication. Therefore, accurate 3D brain model fabricated by RP machine can enable a surgeon to perform pre-operation. to make a decision for the operation sequence and to perceive the 3D positions in prototype, before delicate operation of actual surgery.

Clinically-favored materials for bone regeneration are mainly based on bioceramics due to their chemical similarity to the mineral phase of bone. A successful scaffold in bone regeneration should have a 3D interconnected pore structure with the proper biodegradability, biocompatibility, bioactivity, and mechanical property. The pore architecture and mechanical properties mainly dependent on the fabrication process. Bioceramics scaffolds are fabricated by polymer sponge method, freeze drying, and melt molding process in general. However, these typical processes have some shortcomings in both the structure and interconnectivity of pores and in controlling the mechanical stability. To overcome this limitation, the rapid prototyping (RP) technique have newly proposed. Researchers have suggested RP system in fabricating bioceramics scaffolds for bone tissue regeneration using selective laser sintering, powder printing with an organic binder to form green bodies prior to sintering. Meanwhile, sintering process in high temperature leads to bad cost performance, unexpected crystallization, unstable mechanical property, and low bio-functional performance. The development of RP process without high thermal treatment is especially important to enhance biofunctional performance of scaffold. The purpose of this study is development of new process to fabricate ceramic scaffold at room temperature. The structural properties of the scaffolds were analyzed by XRD, FE-SEM and TEM studies. The biological performance of the scaffolds was also evaluated by monitoring the cellular activity.

Most Rapid Prototyping (RP) processes adopt a solid Computer Aided Design (CAD) model, which will be sliced into thin layers of constant thickness in the building direction. Each cross-sectional layer is successively deposited and, simultaneously, bonded onto the previous layer; and eventually the stacked layers from a physical part of the model. A new RP process, the transfer-type Variable Lamination Manufacturing process using expandable polystyrene foam sheet (VLM-ST), has been developed to reduce building time and to improve the surface finish of parts with the thick layers and a sloping surface. This paper describes the generation of Unit Shape Layer (USL), the cutting path data of the linen. hotwire cutter for the VLM-ST process. USL is a three-dimensional layer with a thickness of more than 1 mm and a side slope, and it is the basic unit of cutting and building in the VLM-ST process. USL includes data such as layer thickness, positional coordinates, side angles of each layer, hotwire cutting speed, the heat input to the hotwire, and reference shape. The procedure of generating USL is as follows: (1)Generation of the mid-slice from the CAD model, (2)Conversion of the mid-slice into a simply connected domain, (3)Generation to the reference shape for the mid-slice, (4)Calculation of the rotation angle of the hotwire of the cutting system.

This paper presents manufacture of mock-up by HSM and optimization of machining condition for high productivity in the view of manufacturing time and accuracy. The rapid machining of prototypes plays an important role in building mock-up. Rapid Prototyping(RP) is a technology to make prototype. But, it have many problems such as shrinkage. deformation and formation occurred by hardening of resin and stair shaping. On the contrary, high speed machining(HSM) technology has many advantages such as good quality, low cost and rapid machining time. HSM and RP is compared for machining efficiency. Experiments are designed by Latin Square Method and machining condition is optimized and selected by ANOVA. For example, propeller is machined by the surface machining of thin surface parts.

The surfaces of prototypes become rough due to the stair-stepping which is the inevitable phenomenon in the Rapid Prototypes are not used only for the verification of feature. The grinding, coating, or the composition of them is a main operation in post-processing in which lots of costs and long build time are needed. The solution is proposed to increase the efficiency of rapid prototyping by minimizing or removing the composition of them is a main operation in post-processing in which lots of costs and long build time are needed. the solution is proposed to increase the efficiency of rapid prototyping by minimizing or removing the regions for post-processing. the factors to cause the surface roughness and their effects are analyzed through the experiments. Software modules are developed to predict the surface roughness of each face in the prototyping with the result. An experimental compensation method is developed to apply the modules to various RP equipments, materials and build styles. The build direction is searched with use of genetic algorithm to maximize the total areas of the surface of which roughness is better than the user-defined value.

In this paper, we proposed a blind watermarking algorithm to apply to the rapid prototyping system. The 3D mesh model is used in the step of the CAD modeling before the making of the prototype system of the rapid prototyping system. STL type mesh modeling which is used in this system reduces the error of the system and improves the accuracy of the system. In the step of the CAD modeling, some transformations which do not change the model accuracy are used, but some transformations which change the model accuracy are not used because the mesh model error is related to the accuracy of the prototype system. Most watermarking algorithms embedded a specific random noise as the watermark information into the model. These kinds of the algorithms are not proper to the 3D model watermarking. The proposed algorithm can be used for the accurate prototyping system because it does not change the model after the watermark embedding This means it can be used for the copyright marking and the data integrity.

RP techniques have inherent disadvantages caused by their working principles: stair-stepped surface of parts due to layer-by-layer stacking of layers, low build speed caused by line-by-line solidification to finish one layer, and post processing to improve surface finish, etc. The objective of this study is to propose a new RP technique, variable deposition manufacturing (VDM), which can make up for the disadvantages of the existing RP techniques, and to develop an apparatus to implement the technique. The proposed process can greatly reduce the building time and improve the surface finish of parts generated. The experiments are carried out to obtain the range of temperature of molten material to maintain its fluidity and to investigate the effect of gas cooling on the preservation of the slopes. Based on the results, some simple shapes such as a line-shape. an S-shape, and a circle-shape were fabricated from Ethylene Vinyl Acetatecopolymer (EVA). In order to examine the applicability of VDM to more general shapes, a tensile specimen and a yo-yo shape were manufactured by the proposed RP method using EVA material as the first trial approach. The present basic study has shown the possibility of a practicable utilization of the proposed VDM process to prototyping of a general three-dimensional shape.
Translucent plastics are commonly used in packaging of mechanical and/or electrical components. Although Rapid Prototyping(RP) provides prototypes of various materials, translucent RP parts are not readily available from most RP processes. ABSi is one of the ABS materials available for Stratasys' FDM process, and the material has potential to be translucent. In this paper, two post-processing techniques were applied in order to increase optical transmissivity of the parts made of FDM's ABSi. First, elevated temperature condition was applied resulting in increased transmissivity while dimensional shrinkage was observed. Second, resin infiltration and surface sanding provided upto 16% transmissivity without shrinkage. These post-processes can be selectively applied to increase transmissivity of ABSi parts. Thus, translucent FDM part can be fabricated from regular FDM process followed by the post-processes developed in this study.
